Ive been training here for over 10 years and its everything I could have ever wanted. The system is a balanced art, placing equal weight on kicks, punches, dodging, forms, sparring and grappling. Different times generally focus on different aspects but the head teacher Sensei Robles runs well varied classes that are extremely fun and sweat inducing. The environment is very friendly. You always hear words of encouragement, and theres almost always a partner to train with. The school is run slightly different in regards to training times, there are still group classes at night, but the school is usually open around 4pm and you can always pop in to train however you feel like. (Classes or not)I was particularly happy with the sparring. Im a big fan so I tend to do it a bit more then those who dont. They have multiple styles of sparring and you can do light contact, heavy contact, point fighting and a few others for training purposes. With the sparring I get to really apply what Ive been learning and see the effects of my training.I really love this place and cant envision my life without it.

Over eight years ago I came to this dojo looking for a way to improve my physical conditioning and satisfy a lifelong curiosity about whether I would benefit from training in the martial arts. I had concerns about my age (I was 46 at the time), the ages of my prospective fellow students (would I be the only adult in a class full of youngsters?) and what physical demands would be placed upon me.From the very beginning, Sensei Robles has been a patient teacher and an inspirational leader who has allowed my interest in karate to flourish and helped make me into a healthier and happier person. Flexible class times and the chance to train with other students in my own age group create an environment where growth is continuous and hard work brings improvement along with a great deal of satisfaction.I would strongly recommend this dojo to anyone with an interest in karate, regardless of age and physical background.

Came to know the Dojo through placing my son in the kids program. I would watch the adults waiting for his class to finish and decided it looked like fun & decided to give it a try.For me, the workouts are great for both both the body and mind. The classes and opportunities for individual work can be extremely varied so I dont have any boredom issues I sometimes get when biking. As a late starter in Karate, the fact that it accommodates a wide variety of skills, ages, sizes and abilities was critical. I have continually been impressed with not only the quality of teachers, but students as well. The more senior students have been selfless with their time and assistance and help me push to get better, but not go beyond my capabilities. Ive developed some great relationships through the dojo. As someone who is not young, the fact that the sport incorporates speed, strength, endurance, arms, legs, core, flexibility has also been great as it keeps the fitness rounded. As for my son, its been great for him. Hes not a team sport kind of kid, and doing something highly physical like Koei-Kan works great with mixed age, mixed skill classes that have a wide variation of abilities allows him to gain skills, self-confidence and exercise in a manner that doesnt result with only winners and losers.Come in for a class to try it!

When I moved back to Seattle, I asked my old Sensei for recommendations of good dojos in the area. Even though it was in a different style, her response was a list with one name - telling me that this dojo was hands down the best place to train in the area. Nine years later I can honestly say she was right and finding this dojo, was one of the luckiest things to have ever happened to me. I have found as much laughter and joy training on the mats there as I have effective technique. You dont expect to find laughter and children running around in a place that is known for full contact sparring. Or at least I didnt. What I found was a place where fairly often parents start training after watching what was going on the mats while waiting for their kids. Coupled with the fact that the dojo tends to retain students, and the result is a number of families training together at all levels. In the eighteen to early twenties the dojo has a number of parent / child black belt pairs, and for younger students it is not uncommon to come in and find a family training together. As an adult - I have always appreciated Sensei Robles ability to teach what can be the frustratingly non-intuitive concepts and forms behind martial training. Not every martial artist is a good teacher. I have found that the dojos emphasis with continuous sparring, and being able to spar with varying and controlled levels of contact force fosters clean crisp technique. It can be intimidating to watch at first, but if you stick around until the end of the night you see a group of people of varying ages, genders and backgrounds - laughing and comparing notes and trying to improve their technique. The result is a dojo where students tend to stay at a much higher than average rate.On the whole, based on my own experiences there I cannot recommend the dojo highly enough. When he was old enough I brought my nephew in to start training there as well, and my strongest recommendations extend to the childrens program. Sensei Robles somehow keeps the kids actively engaged and playing - while still sneaking in having them learning the fundamentals of quality karate.

The Bellevue Academy of Koei-Kan Karate-Do is an amazing Dojo with extremely welcoming, knowledgeable and dedicated instructors. Since I started training in April 2000, I have not only gained a second family, but also a great deal of confidence, strength, coordination and flexibility; all things very important as a female.Sensei Robles has an amazing ability to know exactly where youre at, and push you just enough so youre continually being challenged. Its the perfect combination of keeping you on your toes so you dont feel stagnant, while not overwhelming or discouraging you. This idea of constant improvement is a lesson that carries over into all aspects of life.Highly recommend them!
