Ive had the pleasure to know Mr. and Mrs. Scott and their martial arts program for a number of years. They have a sincere interest in developing their students through rigorous training and equal emphasis on personal development. Mr. and Mrs. Scott have decades of teaching experience and it shows. They also have a great kids program where kids actually have lots of FUN while learning. It has been impressive seeing many of their students grow and develop over time and go on to be successful in their personal and professional lives. Consider giving MCMA a try!

A wonderful experience for my daughter, she is accepted, respected, challenged and pushed each and every class. It has helped her grow into a strong, responsible, confident young teen. We couldnt have gotten there without the support of Mr. Scott and his team! Three thumbs up! (I have an extra thumb)

My kids have taken Tae Kwon Do classes at Monroe County Martial Arts for several years. It has always been a welcoming place for kids and adults to train. Mr. Scott has a way of making everyone feel comfortable and entertained. He is tough and disciplined when the time calls for it but he also knows when to make his classes laugh. I wholeheartedly recommend Monroe County Martial Arts for anyone who is just starting out or has any amount of training experience.

TLDR: This is best martial arts school in Bloomington. Mr & Mrs Scott are truly wonderful people. It may not look like much from the outside, but its got it where it counts.I was a student a later an instructor at MCMA for over 10 years. I moved away from Bloomington about about 12 years ago but have yet to find its equal in an city I have since lived. It was not until after I left and was exposed to students from other martial arts programs that I really appreciated the quality of instruction and the high standards that come with earning a black belt from MCMA. The chief instructors, Steve and Linda Scott, are genuinely good people as well as being excellent martial arts instructors. Mr Scott in particular is great at meeting the students where they are at, being silly and fun with little kids classes or practical and challenging for the adults. If you are considering a martial arts program in Bloomington, this is where you should go.

Monroe County Martial Arts is the martial arts school for everyone from the casual participant looking for a good workout to the serious practitioner looking to elevate and expand their skills. MCMA is a safe and nourishing community that builds confident individuals, excellent martial artists, and strong personal character. My daughter and I have attended classes for over six years and we could not ask for a better, more enriching experience. MCMA is simply the best of the best.

Quality instruction by a brilliant and entertaining Mr. Scott and company. MCMA has a relaxed, yet professional environment made up of skilled staff who respect the art and truly care about the people in the classroom. They excel in teaching the physical skills but also help build ones confidence and skills by thinking through real world situations. I wish every teacher out there in any form of education had the dedication and commitment that Mr. and Mrs. Scott and their staff provide to their MCMA students. Correction... their MCMA family. When you take a belt test, Mr. Scott always checks to see if you have family in the audience and if not, assigns one to you for the night. As silly as that sounds, that gesture represents how much these folks care about their students and the MCMA community. Its THE place to go for martial arts instruction for single-digit aged kids to the octogenarian.

I have trained at MCMA for over six years with my two boys, currently 11 and 13, who got me started. There are three things I would tell anyone about MCMA. First, your age or experience level at the beginning does not matter. I was overweight and closing in on fifty, not very flexible and without any previous martial arts training or interest. The instructors accommodated me as I learned and progressed through the system. I didnt think I wouldnt ever be able to do the jumping and spinning kicks that are part of the curriculum, but Mr. Scott and the other instructors broke the mechanics into stages that I could accomplish and build upon. As I close in on black belt status, I know I can do any maneuver in the curriculum, even if they arent all as elegantly done as the younger participants. Second, its a very welcoming and supportive environment. I know all the instructors and most all of the adult class students. They range from eleven to eighty-something (I hope that isnt giving away too much about Mrs. Larimer). I learn from both instructors and senior students, and I try to share what I have learned with other students. Last, the school isnt just about training in Taekwondo. Included in the curriculum are twice-weekly classes in sparring (my favorite), which gives you a chance to develop and apply your training in a controlled environment. The training becomes real very fast when someone is trying to kick, punch, or outmaneuver you. Everyone is padded, under control, and no one walks away hurt. There are also evening classes in Filipino Martial arts (stick, knife and empty hand training) included in the tuition. Youll gain a new perspective on martial arts and weapons in that group. To make a long story short, there is absolutely no reason you cant walk through the door today to be welcomed and find a safe place to train with extraordinarily high caliber instructors to teach you. The kids and adult programs are both great. The chief instructor, Mr. Scott, is dedicated, colorful and extraordinarily knowledgeable. Just go!
