This school is great, I do have to say that the teachers are very nice and caring. They teach very well. Students are okay but it doesnt matter because any school youll go will have the same kids that have the same behavior. The lunchs are okay I guess, I dont really like the food. I do consider this school though. Athlos has a few events that are fun.

The worst thing about this school is the transportation of your child. They change drivers and dont consider the constraints your children go through when it is extremely cold outside. They expect you to wait in the cold even when their drivers are more than 10 minutes late. When they arrive earlier than the pickup time, they also dont care. The process is like a bunch of people who dont want to work but take on a job. Very frustrating to deal with. On the academic side, they are a great school to send your child if you want to be a parent drop off and parents pickups.

Unfortunately, this school is a long way from being considered high quality however a reasonable person would define high quality. My oldest child is in his third year attending this school and my youngest child is now in her first year. While he enjoys the friends he has made there and his teachers, there have been a bevy of issues since Day One. Mind you, this school is not new. It used to be located in Minneapolis but for the 2014-15 school year, it moved to Brooklyn Park under a different name. With the non-stop issues that seem to plague this school, it would surprise me greatly if Athlos improves sufficiently to be even an average school (whether it concerns academics, busing or simply feeling safe and well-provided for as it concerns the students). I do hope the school finds its way. I am not greatly optimistic. The most confusing aspect for me personally is the nonsensical grading system employed by Athlos. This school does not have a strong academic reputation. But it is not aided by a confusing grading system that does not effectively communicate to the student or his/her parent(s) how well/poorly the student is performing. Ultimately the proof is in the standardized testing. From my research, the students at Athlos (including its predecessor) as a collective do not have a strong history of performing even marginally. I am hoping that this aspect will change and if there is meaningful improvement, the long-term prospects of my children continuing at this school may brighten.Unfortunately, I believe we have reached a point where beyond the 2016-17 school year, we will not have our children continue attending this school. There are too many negatives to overcome the positives such as some of the quality teachers in the younger grades. Administration lacks the ability apparently to provide a meaningful standard of academic improvement student-over-student.

This school lacks communication and customer service. The principal will give reassuring statements which she will not follow through with. The enrollment manager treats parents like they are just a number. I had an horrible experience with this school and hopefully they will improve their customer service and communication.

The majority of students who attend this school misbehave in the class room on a daily basis making hard for the children who want to learn. They have no respect for the teachers and other students. Yelling, playing, cursing, dancing, and bullying other students is the norm. The schools state statistics are reflective of the environment. The teachers cant teach when they have to stop several times during a class to have disruptive students removed. I feel sorry for the teachers who cant teach and the children who want to learn but are not allowed to in a disruptive and perilous environment. Had it not been my grandsons last year I would have pulled him. Do not send your child to this school. I dread to find out how far behind my grandson will be when he starts high school in another district.

My oldest started attending Athlos last year as a 1st grader and my youngest started Pre-K this fall. Amazing teachers and curriculum. Advanced math and a large amount of well structured Gym time. Not many schools also offer all day Pre-K with busing (that has been a blessing vs the cost of daycare). The uniforms were a challenge last year - that got figured out by December and have not been an issue for us this year. The new bus company has been an huge challenge this year but hopefully that will improve as well (its hard to find out at 6:30am that they may not have a bus for you child to get to school that day).5-stars if they get the busing fixed

My son failed miserably in 2 public schools while in Kindergarten. He suffers from anxiety and displays challenging behaviors and the public school method of handling this was by locking him in a room, grounding him from gym/recess. We switched to Athlos at the beginning of 1st grade and are finishing up 3rd this year. My son went from needing 1 on 1 teaching to occasionally needing Para support. While the district refused to put him in excelled math Athlos quickly saw that he was bored and provided opportunities to challenge him. The special ed staff at Athlos are AMAZING! Unfortunately weve moved and will no longer be able to attend Athlos next fall (we moved 45 minutes away) and I am so sad to be saying goodbye to this school that made a HUGE difference in my sons life. I truly believe that public schools are set up to teach to one particular type of student and if your child doesnt fit in this box they are highly likely to slip through the cracks. Athlos has always worked at meeting my son where HE was at, and it has made a difference in how he feels about school.

Teachers expect you to give them high levels of respect even though you receive low amounts of respect from them. Luke Thompson and Lindsey Pugh should receive gold medals because they are great teachers. They treat you with respect and are also strict. They let you ask questions and use your opinion during class unlike most other teachers who say, No questions in the beginning of class like im going to understand it without questions. Also Miss. Nickens is a student support team member and she knows how to handle things the right way. She asks us what happened, how did you feel about it and could you have made a better choice. Instead of yelling at you and saying You are wrong, and you should not have done that. I could say so much more but my hand are tired from the lack of typing lessons held in technology.

Overall my experiences with Athlos have been pleasant. There have been hiccups such as the bus company situation but so far this year it seems to be going well. Teachers and other staff in my interactions have been helpful. However, this I am sure has had its effects at many schools not just Athlos, Common Core standards. In kindergarten my child would come home with three pages of homework. Especially with full day kindergarten that is too much. Now first grade is a nighmare in comparison. Two pages of math, one page of vocabulary, twenty minutes of reading, and one and a half pages of sight word memorizations. It is believed that ten minutes multiplied by the grade level is a good standard for how long homework should be. First grade 10 minutes... I am not saying that is what I feel it should be or has to be but my child arrives home from the bus at about 4:05, she has a snack and a little unwind time. From about 5pm to 630 (easily) she is doing homework, then I have to shove dinner in her face, bath time, nighttime routine. Her bedtime is 8pm. What kind of life is that for a six year old? I urge any parent to look at cirriculum and ask about homework loads.

Before you post a review take a good look at your child, As a Teachers spouce I know how difficult it is to be a teacher with horrible kids and parents that dont get involved and can only complain when kids get bad grades. more than likely if your child doesnt like school there Brats and disrespectful to not only the teacher but to fellow students, Parents need to get involved with there kids learning.

Many of my friends pulled their kids. Bullied by inner city kids and staff did nothing about it. Unfairly give preference to kids outside of immediate area, meaning those that pay higher taxes are those that either dont get OR if they do they end up pulling their kids due to climate.

I worked here as a special ed teacher. I was expected to go without a prep time and was told it was the nature of special education - although as a sped teacher of more than 15 years, I knew that wasnt true. All regular ed teachers were given a prep time. I was sent students to care for during my lunch time, so I started eating lunch in my car! If they dont take care of the teachers, how well do they care for the students?
