Ive had all three of my children attend Montessori Academy of Virginia and have been extremely pleased with not only the diversity and academic programs but the results! My children are reading well beyond their grade level and tackling math from abstract angles. They not only do the work because it is given to them but can explain the concepts intuitively at such a young age. The curiosity and love of learning that is being installed in them is world class!Words cannot express how pleased I am, especially and specifically with Montessori Academy of Virginia. Thank you.

Both of our children went here and we had a great experience. Their teachers are dedicated and the turnover has been minimal compared to other places weve seen. The student to teacher ratio is adequate and much better than the public school environment, often times with each classroom having an assistant. The enrichment activities throughout the year vary from soccer shots, karate, yoga, computers, etc. offering a unique diversity of activities that come to the school during the day. Their before care and after care hours are flexible for working parents. They have recently expanded their parking lot to accommodate family and staff. Its definitely worth scheduling a tour if you want your kids to have a good start in their education and social development.

We love MAV. My oldest daughter went to the Virginia Beach location but we moved before my youngest could start. We were sad that she wasnt going to have the same wonderful experiences. Luckily our new home is only 5 minutes from the Chesapeake location and she was able to start there when she was 2. The teachers at MAV work very hard to help their students learn and grow into capable, well rounded children. My youngest is 4 now and I am impressed with how independent and knowledgeable she is.

Montessori Academy of Virginia, they’re just a business! Our son had been in Montessori for nearly 3 years. There were no issue identified during his kindergarten’s second semester’s teacher conference kindergarten. His Teacher informed us that he was ready to move up for 1st grade. At the same time as the Second Semester Parent Teacher conference, we had a death in the family. Our son’s Grandfather died and so did his dog, all in the same week. I had to travel back home for my father’s funeral, so our son was home with his father (my husband) for two weeks, while I was gone, my husband informed the Admin and Teacher of everything that was going on, in case he started to have bad days at school, while mourning. After I returned home, my husband left for three weeks, for his work. Three days after my husband left for his trip, our son had a crying tantrum at school, so the school called me to have me pick him up. When I arrived at school, I was told he was suspended for two days and could not come back until Monday. Prior to this incident, we had never received a call from Montessori Academy Virginia concerning our son, all year. I wanted to support the school, so I of course disciplined our son for acting out at school, hoping this would correct the bad behavior. But we would continue to get calls once or twice a week to pick him up. I was asked to meet with the Admin and my sons teacher after the third week, where they told me that we as parents had to enforce the same structure at home, as the school. My husband had only been home for a week at this time, before leaving again for two weeks. The school would continue to call me if my son cried for any extended period of time.We had a meeting with the Director, MR. Pawli. At this meeting, which was a Friday, we were told that they wanted our son to stop coming to school, with only 7 weeks left. My husband and I were shocked by this, since we were never told anything about not finishing the year, just that 1st grade had a wait list and they would not accept our son if he did not improve with his crying tantrums. My husband and Mr. Pawli came to an agreement that our son would finish Kindergarten with the school, but not be at Montessori for Summer Camp. If our son was able to get his emotions under control by the end of the year, they would then talk about 1st grade. We informed Mr. Pawli and the Admin that we had arranged for professional counseling for our son, to help him work through all the things he had been going through since February. Over the next three weeks, we got 4 phone calls. On 10 May we received a call early in the morning, so I went to the school and talked to him, because he was already calm. I told the Admin that I would not take him home since he was calm and participating in music class. On Monday, 13 May, I was informed by the Admin that it would be my sons last week at school. My husband and I were able to get him register with a public school and had him start the next week, but what kind of organization does not support a child that is going through so much at such a young age. All this was over the course of 2 and half months, after we had been there for almost three full years. Our son had received two incident reports over the first 2 years, but they were so quick to get rid of him, when he could not keep his emotions under control. After these last three months it is easy for us to see that Montessori Academy of Virginia pretends to care and want a family setting, but truly they do not care. If the staff cared they would have helped our son get through this emotional time, but instead they added to it but always sending him home when he was difficult and then telling him he only had one more chance before they would kick him out. What school would tell a 5 year old that you only have one more chance, when they knew his grandfather and dog just died two months ago. This is why we would NOT recommend Montessori Academy of Virginia!!!! This is a horrible school.

MAV is an awesome school!!! My daughter and I relocated to the area last fall and this school is a perfect fit. Her auntie suggested a montessori school and I couldnt be more pleased. The differences in her academic growth is noticeable and her passion for learning is continual. I feel confident that my daughter is in good hands when I drop her off. The entire staff is committed to student development. Im impressed with how quiet the school is when I stop by and the passion the teachers show in teaching. As an educator myself I look forward to many years of me witnessing my daughters progress at MAV!!!

We are very happy to have our children attend this school. The teachers and staff are not only very skilled but nurturing as well! Our kids have been here since pre-primary, soon entering first grade - they love being here! We are very thrilled with the well rounded curriculum and the one on one guidance, and how far our kids have progressed with math, language, and social skills. They also offer great extra activities such as soccer, yoga, karate. Can’t say enough about the staff, it’s impressive how they know evey student’s name, and can tell they form good relationships with them. Highly recomment this to any parent who want highly skilled and caring teachers and staff.

My child has been attending kindergarten at this campus since September 2017. This is our first exposure to Montessori schooling and I am very pleased with his learning and growth here. I commend the practices of this system which allows each child to learn at their own pace in support of excellent teachers.Payal Mody

I recently moved to the area from Northern Virginia and wanted to sign my children up for Montessori preschool. I saw this location near where we were looking to buy a home and went and toured and thought everything looked great. I asked the administrator if they had their AMI accreditation and she said “oh yes” I didn’t do my due diligence and confirm this because I was in the midst of a move with two toddlers and a lot of stress. So we signed up and started the boys soon after we moved. There were a few minor things I noticed weren’t really Montessori as we settled in to our routine ( like my son getting stickers for having a good day. Rewards are not in line with the montessori method because they don’t teach intrinsic motivation) Ok I can let that slide. But little things started to add up especially after a week after they start, my older son’s teacher is leaving “ due to a military transfer” but this new teacher is “qualified and worked at a montessori school in North Carolina”Then on the Friday that school is letting out for a holiday I meet my son for lunch. The way they treated the students did not sit well with me. One of the assistants told a child she was putting him on the naughty list ( anyone that knows Montessori, knows that Maria Montessori did not believe that children could distinguish between make believe and reality so anything fantasy should be avoided) One of the other teachers was giving another child a hard time for coughing and made her quit eating and sit at the wall because “ you’re going to throw up all your food you are coughing so hard”Well that really got me thinking over winter break so I did some research and found that Montessori Academy of Virginia has NO montessori accreditation, NOT AMI or AMS.So I email the administrator with my concerns and she doesn’t respond. I called and got the run around and she then told me she “has never in 9 years told anyone they were AMI accredited” “We are state licensed and our teachers have different montessori trainings” So I was pretty upset that she has now lied to me twice. So I ask for proof that my oldest son’s new teacher has a Bachelor’s degree and a Montessori certification and she says “ I don’t have her file in front of me” then “ she has a degree from North Carolina and worked at a Montessori school there and is more than qualified” when I asked for proof she wouldn’t give it to me and continued to be super vague before finally admitting that the teacher isn’t certified yet but “ is more than qualified, just needs some practicums to finish her certification”So I asked to be released from our contract and my last months payment to be returned. The administrator says she will let me know and then when I didn’t hear from her I called and she said we can be released from the contract but they are keeping the 1k+ I said that isn’t acceptable because I signed the contract under false pretenses. So she said she would contact accounting and get back to me. I called today after the weekend and she was super short with me and “hadn’t heard back from accounting” *update* they refunded our last months tuition and released us from our contract. If you are looking for a daycare this place is fine but don’t pay the extra money they are charging for a Montessori education because that isn’t what your child is receiving.

I have two children at MAV. My oldest has attended since she was in the toddler. My youngest is in 3rd (and has also been there since the toddler class). My oldest is now in the 6th grade, which unfortunately means we have to move on (school only goes up to 6th). All of her teachers have been amazing and have instilled in her a passion for learning. She is technically in middle school and one of the only kids I know that is still passionate about what she learns in school. For that, I am forever grateful. We will miss MAV, but believe that they have gotten the best educational foundation that they possibly could have had.
