If you’re looking for a martial arts school that teaches the art in its purity, challenges your atheletic ability and your intellect this is the school to join. Master Philip Nearing has dedicated his teachings to the art of Wing Chun there is no need to look elsewhere. I have been a student of his for over 20 years . There is a reason why I keep coming back. Every time I leave I learn something new as I am challenged to be a better Wing Chun practitioner and person.

Student here! Ive been going to this school for almost a year now and I plan on staying! Im a short lady and always thought of that as a weakness but Sifu Sharon is shorter than me and she uses that as a strength and its pretty inspiring to us short ladies seeing her in action. I attend the ladies class on Tuesdays and Thursdays with Sifu Sharon, for some context.Theres another class that meets more often that is open to everyone too. I didnt have any martial arts experience starting off but that wasnt a problem, theyre patient and helpful with teaching newbies and everybody is friendly.

This school is a real gem. I have been in and out of martial arts all of my life. I studies Shotokan and Okinawan karate in my teens, Ninpo in my twenties, Aikido in my early fifties, and finally I discovered that Wing Chun is the right art for me! Sifu Nearing will drill into you things you must never forget in case you ever need to use Wing Chun to fight. Besides being a great instructor, he is also a good listener and takes his time to communicate. I like his structured teaching style, and am fairly surprised I am moving on to chi sao sticky hands drill in such a short time frame.

Sifu Philip Nearing provides a broad knowledge base and very practical advice and guidance for those seeking to either begin or advance their study of Wing Chun kung fu. He is professional, maintains a deep respect for the art and what it can do for any who choose to join the gym all while being extremely friendly and personable to newcomers. The gym itself has provided a welcoming and educational atmosphere for me for years now. Everyone involved is friendly yet focused enough to provide a strong foundation and back bone for serious Wing Chun study and exploration. The syllabus is pragmatic and focuses on realistic application while cleaving to the core traditional values of Wing Chun.

I met Phillip at the end of 2012 while specifically looking for a school to practice Wing Chun. He had a good atmosphere, relaxed leadership and everybody was there to train. Sifu Nearings Wing Chun is clear, concise and practical. He helps to bring the forms of Wing Chun into my own practical understanding, nothing is done for the sake of movement. If you want to study Wing Chun or learn any martial art, I cannot recommend a better school.

Ive been practicing Wing Chun at Phil Nearings School for a couple of years and would highly recommend it to everyone who wants to learn this effective art in a systematic and thorough manner without being rigid or dogmatic. What really attracted me to this school was Phils scholarly approach to teach a living and evolving art where techniques can be questioned and adapted or replaced if necessary. This way of teaching is driven by Sifu Nearings intellectual curiosity, his passion for martial arts and his eagerness to preserve and teach authentic Ip Man Wing Chun, a trait he has in common with his own teacher, Samuel Kwok, (who regularly spends visits to Chicago to teach multi-day seminars at Phils gym every year). At this school you will learn the fundamentals and principles right - with an explanation of the ideas behind each element of the forms as well as the corresponding applications. There are no belts and students are taught at a level that is suitable for their individual skill level - which allows one to advance pretty quickly if one is willing to invest the right amount of time and effort. When it comes to effective self-defense Wing Chun is a great art to train due to its incredible speed and economy of motion. I would highly recommend Phils school to everyone who is interested in learning this beautiful Kung-fu style. Take a free trial lesson and discover it for yourself!

The qualities of a good Sifu and great Sifu may be subtle but can make a world of difference to the student. Not only does Sifu Nearing possess 30 years of Wing Chun technical knowledge, he realizes how to effectively communicate that knowledge, and tailor that information to each student;s individual needs. He knows how to deliver praise and criticism in a way that a student will take to heart.Having been involved in sports for over 40 years, I can honestly say I have never meet an instructor or coach who had more passion for his art and students than Sifu Nearing. His passion for the art and improvement is contagious, making the learning environment a positive experience for every student at the school, regardless of their skill level.Sifu Nearing is an instructor filled with compassion, and takes the time to get to know his students both inside the school and outside the school. I can personally say, I have never meet anybody who has made a greater effort to listen and understand my needs and treat me with respect, or has worked harder to give me every opportunity to improve my skills. He has always made the time to answer any question I ever had. He never grew tired of explaining or demonstrating a particular technique I was having difficulty learning. Im taking about every instance spanning a period over a decade.Sifu Nearing possesses the necessary leadership qualities to give every student direction and motivation to reach their potential. He is highly organized and has a plan to encourage each student to believe and work together. He is truly an enthusiastic individual, leading by personal example.Sifu Nearing is a master Wing Chun instructor I can personally say is the most humble individual I have ever meet. He wants every student to succeed, but not at the expense of their skill development. He truly measures success by each students improvement and passion for the art. He is a man who is concerned more abut the team, than the man behind the bench. It is with the greatest recommendation that I would urge anyone to go check out this school regardless of their skill level

I first joined the Philip Nearing school of Wing Chun in Chicago on January 6, 2008. I had already been practicing Aikido for 11 years when I started with him. Sifu Philip Nearing has an outstanding ability to teach and relate to people that have other martial experience equally as well as beginners. His personal attention to your learning needs is exemplary and he has the ability to help you separate your existing knowlage from what you are learning with him, while helping you build upon the base that you already have. Whether you are a raw beginner with no experience, or you are a well-intentioned polite veteran of other arts, I could not give a higher recommendation and endorsement than I do to The Philip Nearing School Of Wing Chun.
