Okay, so I went here for about 2 years back in 2016. The martial art is practical, but incomplete using many forms of martial arts, but mainly using Aikido techniques in a more forceful way. I even learned some Batto-Jutsu (how to use a sword). They rank you up too soon without having you properly cementing the techniques. Not to mention the techniques dont seem to be taught as well compared to if you went to an actual master of the original martial art since these techniques are moderately developed, but not fully fleshed out. Their principles are practical though as you study various things like initiative, how to control speed when fighting someone, controlling yourself in a fight, etc. Not to mention sometimes they talk about how you can use this in a real life situation. When they attack you in sparring though, they will merely only grab you, never throw a serious enough strike, this was a problem with me as since I was so used to dodging, in one fight, I underestimated my opponent and he hit me knocking me back in the street. Some teachers here have previously trained in other dojos and can give you very good advice. For example, there was this one black belt named Larry who used to be a Muay Thai, BJJ, and probably a practitioner of other martial arts and he taught me how to block using Muay Thai which was very effective. However most of the instructors lack details while explaining as I remember while they taught me how to round kick, they said,Just feel it. Instead I had to watch a Youtube video to figure out the problem was that I wasnt chambering my leg when kicking. Much respect though as you must remember %50 of the time its the martial artist, the other %50 is how the technique is used.

My 8 year old son has been coming here for the past year and this place has met and exceeded both mine and my husbands expectations. I can truly say my son loves coming to his classes twice a week and looks forward to learning new techniques. Not only only has this place taught him the wonderful art of jujutsu, it has also boost his confidence and challenges him mentally, physically and socially. Jon and Rosie (along with the other instructors) are nothing but awesome, patient, passionate and wonderful role models. I highly recommend this place 👍

CCB has been great for my daughter. Sensi Rosie and Hanshi Jon are patient, kind, and fun and create a wonderful environment for learning and training. Now that my 7 year old has some skills she does forward rolls, backward rolls, and knee walks everywhere!! Highly recommended if you have an active child who needs to channel some energy...

About a year and a half ago, my 7-year old son decided he wanted to be a ninja. Out of the blue, my husband declared that he, too, had always wanted to be a ninja, so they signed themselves and my 5-year old daughter up at Contra Costa Budokan for jujutsu classes. All three have loved it since the very first class. I was impressed right away with how great Jon, the owner, is at getting kids to understand concepts like goal-setting, taking initiative, and facing their fears. This martial art is not just excellent training in self-defense, it is a self-improvement journey that doesn’t feel like work, even to the kids. My husband enjoys it so much that he now studies all three of the martial arts taught at Contra Costa Budokan. There is a real feeling of warmth and family in the dojo, and the instructors are dedicated to teaching their students to be excellent people as well as excellent martial artists.

My daughter started to attend jujutsu over 2 years ago when we just moved to US. She spoke zero English at that time. This place was fantastic and still is, not only she learns martial arts but also gets so much value, motivation and inspiration from her teachers. Dojo helped her with English too, which is really great! We love this place!

I make the drive up from Santa Cruz to train at Contra Costa Budokan frequently, and every time, I leave with a fresh perspective on my training and personal growth as a martial artist. CCB has an enthusiastic atmosphere and regularly hosts exciting, detailed seminars. However, most importantly, the head teacher, Jon Rodriguez Sensei, as well as the other instructors, are dedicated to teaching their students in the most pure and powerful way possible. I am always impressed by the students passion for and dedication to learning and improvement. Among other things, this dojo has a great kids program, and I cant imagine a better way to teach kids responsibility, discipline, and leadership in a safe and fun way. I recommend this school to everyone I know who lives in the Contra Costa area, as well as everyone who reads this review!

The best Japanese style Jujitsu Dojo in the Bay Area, without a doubt. Having done countless trial programs and free classes to find a new martial art to practice, I only needed one class here to know the instructors are serious, kind, and powerful expert professionals with a gift for teaching the subtleties of martial arts - especially one as nuanced as Seibukan Jujitsu. I signed up immediately. Everyone there is a pleasure to deal with, and it is full of serious martial artists and they manage to be jovial, fun, and very good at what they do. I cannot attend class as often as I want, but it is truly an amazing Dojo. I highly recommend both the adult and childrens classes. I know Ill be signing up my child in a few years when they are old enough. Its a community, they push you to be better, and its a great place all around. Perhaps what I love most about this Dojo is the adherence to Japanese traditions - the dojo isnt just a place you go because you paid money to learn a thing. It is a school, a community, a place of learning, healing, and growing that the students maintain because what we get from the Dojo is worth more than what we pay to attend it. If you are looking for a Japanese martial art that is effective in self defense, draws from the rich history of Japanese martial arts schools, and is a strong community? You will not find a better place to be.
