I reached out to Rodness as a thirtyish man who had literally zero experience in martial arts, looking for a basic introduction, and Rodness Taekwondo classes were exactly what I was looking for! All of the classes were wonderful, and the instructors kind, motivating, and, especially for me, patient! The best martial arts center in town if not in California! Mr Rodness, the main instructor being a two-time US Taekwondo champ has all the mastery, hard work and energy. His enthusiasm is very infectious and has the very best patience for young kids as well as adult newbies. I am a petite woman and could easily be overpowered, unless I trained to defend myself and fight off an attacker. My friends and I were looking for a place where we could learn practical self-defense tactics. We were referred to Rodness Martial Arts and found exactly what we were looking for. The students range from young adults, teens to seniors, women and men. Classes are varied and fun too!

Mr. Rodness and his staff effectively instruct students about martial arts techniques in a safe and positive atmosphere. More importantly, he also teaches kids about respect, perseverance, and life skills. I am so thankful that my daughter has been in his program since she was 7 years old. I have been attending both the Taekwondo and Kickboxing classes for a month now and have completely fallen in love with the environment of the studio. We are lucky to have 2 sons, 13 years apart, train with Mr. Rodness and his knowledgeable team. The environment is inclusive, respectful and fun. All instructors are enthusiastic, encouraging and patient. Mr. Rodness tailors his instruction to the individual student and his/her needs. Great program/school!

This is an awesome place! The instructors are experienced, professional and incredibly patient with the kids. They are able to effectively communicate with each student at his/her level, regardless of age. We so appreciate what Rodness and this practice has done for our son -improved focus, discipline and respect. We HIGHLY recommend this studio.

Both of my boys benefited tremendously from Mr Rs teaching. He is incredibly patient with wiggly little kids, and has managed to instill a great deal of discipline, confidence, and respect in both of my sons. His teachings helped my oldest son to learn to stand up to a bully at school, and the bullys antics no longer bother him. We were very sad to move away, or we would have been students for life. Mr R will go down in our family as a huge influence in the men my children become.

Im really impressed with how Grand Master Steve manages his studio and am excited that my son will be training with him. Steve is extremely patient and kind to the children in the program, and you can tell that he really loves what he does. In addition to learning martial arts techniques, my son has had the benefit of learning how to respectfully address his peers and teachers and also growing a huge amount of confidence in himself. This place is definitely worth the investment if youre considering signing your child up in a martial arts program.

Rodness Martial Arts is so great for my 9-year-old son. He really enjoys and looks forward to going to class, and we can see his confidence growing in response to the fun challenges and encouragement. Hes inspired by the great discussions about lifes many important lessons.

Even though, I have been here such a short time, Ive realized that the teacher is really well trained and he is also willing to help us with all the doubts we have (we the students). Plus every class is full of knowledge. I really enjoy being part of this center.

The children and adults (instructors as well as students) are respectful and very positive. The class varies from day to day-- some drills in the air, some with partners, some hitting the punching bags-- plus some sparring practice and forms. The class keeps moving, and the time flies. Great environment and a fantastic workout.

Mr Rodness and instructors teach martial arts to persons of all ages. Classes are fun and are especially engaging towards children who tend to shy from physical activities. Additionally he mentors by example emphasizing kindness, good health practices and self direction. Both my sons and now my grandson study with him. He is well regarded by former students who frequently stop by to say Hi.

Wonderful martial arts training in a safe and positive environment!! Started my son at 5 (he is still there at 20), I joined in shortly after. Adult and child classes, flexible scheduling. Mr. R keeps the classes moving and challenging for all levels. Would add a 6th star if I could.

The Rodness Center has shown my wife and me an amazing sense of family belonging, as they beat the basics of self defense into us. The time of the classes fit our busy schedule, and Mr. R. is nothing short of a true professional. My 8yo daughter has been learning TKD and Bjj at Rodness Martial Arts since December and she loves it! Mr. R has incredible patience with the kids and speaks to them respectfully but with authority. This is not a belt factory: Mr. R and Miss Jen stress that hard work, discipline, a positive mindset, and respect for others are as important as learning the forms and movements. Rodness Martial Arts is the best!Professional instructors that have the perfect balance between discipline, fun, and a good work out even for small kids. I had been very interested in getting my son (8) involved with a martial art for some time. He had previously taken a short introductory session in Taekwondo some years prior and had enjoyed it, so I was on the hunt not only for where but what. He and I spent some time looking at videos online and he expressed an interest in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), which, given its place in MMA, I was all for.After some research on available schools in Davis, I emailed Rodness Martial Art Center for more info and from the get-go Mr. Rodness was courteous, encouraging, professional, and easy to work with. We started with an introductory class where my son really had a great interaction with Mr. Rodness as the teacher, but also with the other students, which is also reflective of the environment they learn in.I signed up my son for classes, and since then it is something he looks forward to every week. In the two months weve been attending he has already learned a tremendous amount (as have I observing), and is discovering a love for a pursuit that will benefit him for the rest of his life.More importantly, as I alluded to above, I am incredibly impressed with the learning environment Mr. Rodness creates, both encouraging and task-oriented, with an emphasis on camaraderie and respect. The classes arent simply technique, but the logic behind the technique, the respect of learning the building blocks, and how to interact with both the teacher and the other students. More advanced students are often asked to help peer-coach newer kids during some drills (including my son), and seeing two kids discuss proper technique colloquially and patiently, walking through each step, is also reflective of how those kids were taught to interact.While my son is in BJJ, Ive had the opportunity to observe the Taekwondo class prior to my sons, and there is no difference in the quality, type, and interaction between Mr. Rodness during that class with his students. He is a strong teacher, engages well with the skilled and non-skilled students, and really is adept at talking and explaining things to kids in a way that they understand not just the what but the why.The cost of lessons is in line with other schools, extremely reasonable, and worth every penny.If youre looking for a martial arts school where your child gets to learn in a fun, safe, and encouraging environment - this is the place in Davis.

Mr. R and the whole team at RMA welcomed me with enthusiastic open arms. Their expertise, patience and passion make this studio unparalleled in the Davis area. I was part of the MMA for the Street and the BJJ class, both of which I highly recommend. The techniques and the focus they help you practice/cultivate are directly applicable to real-life scenarios. I found those classes challenging - satisfyingly so - but very go-at-your-own-pace. Moreover, beginners (white belts) are actively paired up with more advanced students, and there is a palpable were-all-in-this-together spirit. I emerge from the studio feeling like a better person (with slightly more abs!), and would encourage folks of any age and skill level to go and try it for themselves.

We love Rodness Martial Arts! Our daughter looks forward to each lesson and practices diligently in between. She has even been watching the classic movie The Karate Kid over and over again. I am thrilled that she is learning Tae Kwon Do, but even more pleased that Master Rodness and Miss Jen are teaching her life lessons that will help her be the best person she can be as she becomes an accomplished adult witht the tenants of Tae Kwon Do to guide her in making good decisions.

I have been with Rodness Martial Arts for over 3 years and have both of my sons there. Im doing MMA and love the balance of learning technique with sparring, all while having a positive atmosphere that inspires camaraderie between students.My sons do Jiu Jitsu. His kid classes are great - he focuses on technique but also keeps it moving so that the students dont get bored. My older son, who has been there coming up on 3 years, has worked hard for his yellow belt. I like that Mr. R doesnt just promote students wily nilly like some of the other places in town. My son has had to work for it, and its well worth it. He does use a stripe system between belts that helps keep kids excited and motivated.Mr. R himself is great. Hes straight-forward and easy to work with. Hes patient while he even while he pushes students to improve. And he cares that the students are respectful and have a positive mindset, along with learning technique. I know he has been a part of both of my sons character and development, as well as confidence.Highly recommended!

My son has been with Mr. R since he was 5 years old, first doing Taekwondo and then Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (hes now 11). Mr. R and the other instructors at the school are very caring and work with each kid to bring out their best. My husband and I both did TKD in college and love the Rodness approach. The instructors are excellent teachers and very knowledgeable. The school has a great family atmosphere that gives the kids a sense of belonging.
