I recently moved to Durham. Previously I had belonged to private gyms. After reading about the many classes offered by the Ys here in Durham I thought I had found the answer to my needs so I joined. I was most excited about taking the water aerobics classes. This Y has two large indoor pools separated by a walkway about eight feet wide with two lifeguard stations. Today I was told I cannot take the class if I dont register first but they only allow 20 people to register so if youre not able to phone in exactly 48 hours before the class and 20 people have, youre out. This particular class is the most fun I have ever had exercising. The instructor is the best Ive ever had. She makes the class both fun and hard work and the class something dozens of members want to take. I am both upset and disappointed. I can see at least three easy solutions but the mgr. of the Y pool division said they weret feasible. So, before you actually pay your money and join and after looking at their class list and deciding what youd like to register for, call the class registration phone number to check to see if youll be able to sign up for that particular class. If mgmt. gets the water aerobics situation straightened out, I would gladly give this facility five stars. Its big, clean and the front desk people are very helpful.

Had a negative experience here as a trans person, but when I reached out to the area manager they were very apologetic and on point with trying to make things better, not just for me but for others in the future. They offered a free month membership and I will be giving them another chance.

I just rejoined the ymca and was given the incorrect information regarding my monthly draft. That’s why I left the last time. You would think things ha gotten better in 5 years but it hasn’t. I guess that’s strike one for me.

Not my favorite Y. You have to give up a personal item to get a locker key. The weight room is decent and they have an indoor track. I noticed a couple of the racks could use some work or updating but other than that it is decent.

This feels like a very old YMCA, the workout area is pretty congested and cramped feeling, and parking is just atrocious. I’ve only been a few times, but both of the times they were doing construction in the locker rooms and we’re paining and had sandblasting everywhere right beside the sauna and steam room. Towel service and locker locks are good.

I love my YMCA. Everyone there feels like family. I love the trainers that are in the weight room. The class trainers remember my name and my needs. I love the variety than I can have in my workout And just the all around atmosphere

BEST YMCA I have ever seen and used !! Highly recommend !! Very large facility with tons of services and the cost is very reasonable. I have lived in Iowa, Connecticut, Maryland, Virginia, and North Carolina and the Durham downtown YMCA blows away all of the YMCAs I have seen and used. None of them remotely even come close to this fantastic Y.

Pool, steam and sauna are like a day at the spa! Staff is courteous and helpful. Workout room has large selection of equipment for all types of workouts. And the indoor track is useful in the winter.

I wrote an e-mail to the Dir of this Y to ask if I could volunteer in exchange for using the gym at a discount since I cant afford the $105 monthly fee. I offered to read to children or work in the gym. (Ive worked as a fitness trainer and managed literacy programs) She wrote back simply: The YMCA of the Triangle is a cause and mission driven organization and we do not trade off volunteering for facility usage or discount in the rates. So nowhere in their cause or mission is education or health. Very interesting.

Extremely rude staff especially short haired women at the registration desk. The Manager Marvin was incompetent and witnessed his employee being extremely rude. Walked in at 802 registration I guess closes at 8? Wouldnt let me be a paying customer and the women proceeded to close her register while Im asking if I can pay. Gym closes at 10 they could easily of allowed me to workout. Really poor customer service and suggest going to a different Y. I dont see either of these employees lasting though.

Y staff needs to enforce the rules regarding underage children in the womens locker room. I visited between 5:30 and 7:00 on a Wednesday evening, usually a busy time for after work traffic. I encountered 2 preschool age boys in the locker room waiting for adults who were either showering or dressing to go.If women dont have the good sense to protect their own children from viewing naked strangers, then someone shoulld remind them that other women sharing the locker room may not want to disrobe in front of underage boys. Theres a Y Playhouse upstairs that provides supervised childcare on-site. Staff should see that patrons use it. Why make everyone else uncomfortable?

Parking lot can get full many times but they have a nice parking garage across the Y although it costs money. This Y is a great place to work out though and usually very friendly staff and a great walking track and fitness center. Locker rooms are also great. 4 stars instead of 5 due to limited parking.Update (3/31/19)- Cancelled my YMCA membership in February which was a shame since I have been coming to this Y for more than 6 years. Will really miss it but it hurts when other people treat me like something is wrong with me. How would you feel if you were treated like an outcast?? Probably not good at all.

The classes aren’t great great. The parking lot is always full so it’s hard to find parking. The locker room always smelled awful and lacked air conditioning. I cancelled my membership 1.5 weeks before my next bill date and they just told me that I had to pay for another month because they said that it’s their policy. The guy was a jerk who I spoke with today. Not happy with my experience here. Do not get on their auto pay or you will never get off!

The rudeness is absolutely true by the housekeeping staff as well. Should I say just one member of that staff. She was rude and kept watching every little thing I did. She was doing the same thing to other members. She was older and she acted like a stalker. The swim team staff were very friendly and accommodating and the staff working the counter to hand out keys and towels are very nice but the rest of the staff has a lot of work to do to improve their customer service. If Im a paying member of the YMCA, I should not be receiving that kind of treatment. I let me membership go but want to return only if the customer service has improved.
