They have a great Emergency Management Program and I love how involved the professors are with their students. They really want you to do well. The cost is reasonable. I have to take extra classes to graduate (as a transfer student) but no regrets here. Also, there is great scholarship opportunities here.

Not very amazing. The campus is built on a hill, so getting around is pretty grating, and everything is spaced out so dully. Its a bit of a pain to get everything set up, seeing as how you have to use not one--not two--not even three--but essentially four websites to get up and moving at this university. Fees are handled as a joke, too. For example: You didnt fill out some seminar that you might have, just possibly could have gotten a spam email about? Gotta pay $100 or youll be dropped from all your classes with nothing but a days notice. Tough luck, right? Dont even get me started on the controversies surrounding this place recently. Title IX is NOT held up here, and serious sexual assault issues never get properly resolved. Being completely honest, its not very safe here. Despite the shortcomings, the overall atmosphere of UAF can be soothe at times, whenever you decide to sit down somewhere between classes, but as far as universities go, youre better off elsewhere. Id suggest you absolutely use the Study Abroad support this place has if you get roped into being a student here.

Good for the right programs, I guess. If engineering or the natural sciences are your jam, you might try this university, because thats where the money and attention are going. Excellent French program and some good art courses, but some of the programs feel weak or neglected, and overall the classes are extremely hit or miss. Ive taken some truly underwhelming courses here and am looking forward to finishing my degree (not in engineering or natural sciences) someplace else. All that said, its generally a friendly campus that attracts an interesting mix of people. While many of the older buildings are ugly, the campus itself can be really pretty, and the shuttle between the parking lots, upper campus, and lower campus is a welcome support in the cold dark of winter.

Some of these bad reviews were written by people with no comprehension of facts or reality, or an axe to grind, or who have obviously never set foot on the campus. Is it for everybody? No. But that’s what makes it great. The best university in Alaska by a long shot.

Horrible school. Dont waste your time if you want to feel like you are getting your moneys worth out of your education. My last two courses I essentially had to teach myself even though I paid 3K. I will NEVER attend another class through UAF and others would be wise to steer clear of this, so called, university. They just want to take your money and give you a sub-par education.

I 100% regret going to UAF. Its a rather soul-crushing institution, completely and utterly obsessed with administration and politics. Recently they fired one of their more passionate and well-respected professors for reporting harassment of female students to the police. If you value your education, and your dignity, pick a different school.

UAF is ridiculously expensive, and theyre still raising tuition. I honestly dont know why anyone chooses to go here. Im so happy I decided to go to school elsewhere.

Theyre running this business into the ground, theyre cutting Majors left and right; UAF has never cared about their students as much as they have about their research, so if youre liberal arts, be prepared for classes with holes in the ceiling. Theyre trying to renovate the decrepit dorms but they simply dont have enough money because they keep building new buildings rather than restructuring old ones because thats how they can get grants easier. As an an added bonus, theyve had major problems with Title IX and Sexual Assault in the past that theyve been working on for years and if a UAF student put in the same lack of work on a project as UAF has put into its ability to deal with sexual assult in a helpful way, that UAF student wouldnt get a high enough grade on that project to pass, and I dont think we should give UAF a pass either. The only thing Ive seen done is have Title IX info splashed everywhere, with pictures of the new Dean in front of it smiling like theyve solved the problem, followed by a formal apology emailed to the entire student body not long after, saying that theyve messed up, and theyre still working on it. Colleges have this problem in general, but this is a reputation that sets UAF far behind the curve in dealing with it.I wouldnt suggest this college to my worst enemy. Ive seen people have emotional breakdowns over how bad the financial aid/bursar system works. The food used to be so bad that they had to build an entirely new cafeteria to try to rectify it(with a student currency youre obligated to buy nearly dollar for dollar that allows them to inflate food prices dramatically, leaving students starving at the end of the semester.) The Resident Assistants are overworked and underpaid for a high stress job. Dont throw yourself into debt over this greedy corporate titanic.

I went to UAF for both undergraduate and graduate studies. Ultimately I graduated with my MBA in 2011. I am proud of UAF and my education and proud to call Fairbanks home. You get more out when you put more in!

If UAF ever promises you money, dont just get it in writing, get a damn signed document. Because I had a written document telling me I would get funding, got a 4.0 for the semester, and then they decided to not fund me for the second semester.Dont mind me, I just spent thousands of dollars to drive thousands of miles to move to Alaska.

UAF is my hometown university. I went to West Valley high school just down the road, and I never once thought that my time at UAF would be how it is.I absolutely love it! Its college, so you are in charge of yourself. If funding, advising, etc isnt simple, you have to work hard and continuously work to get it. I love my degree program (Wildlife Biology), and think it is very strong. I also got an amazing student job at Outdoor Adventures, leading people into Alaskas wilderness rafting, hiking, ice climbing, and more while getting paid! On top of that, I really enjoy our gym and recreation, and have played intramural hockey almost every year. Im proud to be a Nanook. I have omitted 1 star because of small faculty issues I have faced, and the fact that I have not attended another university to compare to UAF.

DO NOT APPLY. I applied to this school because my 2nd choice of major was at UAF and I am from this state. Also I didnt get accepted into my other choices of school. Instead I come to find out that this school was a waste of my time. My academic advisor was not helpful and most of all unprofessional. She did not seem she liked her job and did not want to help me at all. All I did was ask questions and she made it seem like I was stupid when in reality I am not. This school sounds like they do not care about NO ONES academic endeavors, and all they want is money. I do not feel proud to call myself a Nanook. I am planning on not to attend this school. For anyone who wants to go here do NOT apply. Even if its your last chance to do so. DO NOT APPLY HERE.

I lived in Hess Village (on Campus ) worked in Chapman-lab (back in the ice-cube/NT days) and went to school there. I LOVE they have the equipment now for computer forensics and needless to say if I was in fairbanks, Id probably still be working/going to school there like my friend Nathan is.Wonderful, wonderful environment, great people, and professors that KNOW their subjects inside and out.I mean what else besides cross-country skying, holding bbqs at 60 below and watching northern lights while sitting in a hot tub is there to do in Fairbanks in the winter besides study? Oh, yah, there is the World Ice Carving Championships, and a killer Duct Tape Creation contest, and boffa, and there is that silly research, one of the few federal depositories for Libraries (meaning everything the library of congress gets, so does the library in fairbanks)Dont forget to try the Greek Lemon Potato soup and the homemade, home picked Blueberry Ice Cream at the Wolfs Den.I miss fairbanks.
