I have trained here for years and still enjoy the teaching, workouts, and comradely up to this day. The instructors truly have a different understanding of martial arts. This is not a sport based school or belt mill, you wont see the jumpy type of Karate you typically see at most commercial places (which was what made me leave my first place initially) this style of Shotokan emphasizes real world defense mentality. I immediately took notice by just watching one evening class here at GG. This is more akin to the Okinawan karate styles (which is what Karate is supposed to be in the first place) with the core characteristics of Shotokan (mentality, distance, timing, precision of technique). The lineage needs no further comment as you can trace it directly to the founder of the system with no questionable instructors along the way.All the training sessions are intense, and have the traditional karate curriculum (warm up, kihon, kata, kumite). In my view - Like with most martial arts, you get what you put into it, repetition is the key to getting proficient at any skill. The technique you practice thousands and thousands of times is what will manifest, and will give you a fighting chance in and physical life or death scenario, this is SKA GGs specialty.. I will also include, to say the typical brain will freeze if youve trained with the mentality of attempting to know thousands of different techniques with minimal repetition, which can land you in trouble when $#!^ hits the fan...There are people from all walks of life that train, Ive seen so many of my classmates grow and progress over the years due to hard work, and the credit goes to the instruction and environment. If your looking for a place that will guarantee you a new belt every few months or a BB for just showing up then Id would advise you not to waste your time and look elsewhere - but If your looking for life long training with the benefits that come along with training SKA Shotokan, then I would highly encourage you to check out GG and start training.

Trained and taught here for many years. Greg Scott is a fantastic leader. The dojo is always clean and top notch. A wonderful atmosphere is created for adults and children to learn as well as challenge themselves. I know many who have trained here for decades. And many lives that have been transformed due to Garden Grove dojo.

Garden Grove Shotokan is a great place to learn serious self defense skills and the art of Karate. Whenever I got to practice at garden grove it was all about realistic techniques that I can bet my life on, when faced with life and death situations. Seniors at garden grove are legendary fighters, SKA organization being a non-profit, you will be getting world class instruction for literally peanuts in terms of money.
