Ive been at student of this school since Pre-school, and I am now in 9th grade. We joined at the beginning of the first year that this school was created, my parents having been friends with the owner/creators, the Breeds. Ive seen lots of change, the good and the bad, and after everything, it is easy to focus on the errors and flaws. However after true speculation I can see how special this school was for my life and my future. The Montessori aspect helped me to grasp onto the simple subjects, such as counting, or addition. And its friendly environment creates long-lasting friendships and families. So this school is very deserving of a five-star review because, with intention, a student can excel greatly. Now, Ill say informally: OCA is great, and I love it.

My son joined OCA as a first grader. I am loving seeing his academic growth explode. I love the way the progression of the materials gives him confidence and then challenges him. I love the way that he talks about his work and how he compares with others - indicating that when others are further along, they have practiced more - having him acknowledge their hard work while seeing the path to get further along himself is beautiful. Most of all, I love that he is in a loving and nurturing environment - he is known, seen, and loved by his teachers, admin, and students. He has developed sweet friendships with each of his classmates. I think that the children being given opportunities to teach each other lessons allows the kids to view one another as both teachers and students and that relationship lends to mutual respect. I drop him off knowing that he is well loved and cared for throughout the day.

Our son attended pre-k at OCA last year. We were so happy with the care and dedication of the teachers/staff. They are very detail oriented and work hard to meet the needs of every child. I felt like his teachers went above and beyond to help him thrive. They really see the children through the lens of Gods heart and their unlimited potential. They live and act out their values especially for authenticity and honor. The atmosphere is warm, peaceful and it encourages creativity and joy. It’s an amazing school and community I would highly recommend!

So grateful we came across Oak City Academys website as we planned to transition out of the public school setting, but hadnt found anything that just felt right -- two years in and we cant imagine being anywhere else. Peaceful classrooms, a unique mixture of Montessori and classical education, and staff that love your kids like their own, while fostering the WHOLE child. Gone are our days of being a number in a school system -- my son comes home excited to tell me how he learned math, geography, read the Bible, cared for the class pet, watered the class plants, and weaved on the loom. The character-building and life skills practiced there are such a gift. We are thankful to be part of the OCA community and to have finally found a school that values wonder over test scores.

OCA is an a amazing schooI!!! I am a student here and have been at this school for many years. It really feels like home. The teachers are really nice, and focus on our character as much as they do on our academics. I have had the same Grammar teacher for the past four years, and she truly cares for us as her students. What I also love about OCA is that the teachers strive to make learning fun. Our Science this year includes disection and lots of experiments instead of straight lectures and worksheets. The students are all really nice too and everyone is friends with each other. I highly recommend this school!

I would say that, the beginning of the school year was hard navigating my way through private school and being a 7th grader, but my teachers were very helpful and truly did care about my life. I was also struggling with my faith towards god and was very distant with him during the first semester but OCA really helped me reconnect with him and i dont know where i would be without yall. So thank you so very much! -Stella Wimberley

Oak City Academy is a breath of fresh air to our community. Never before have I experienced such a peaceful atmosphere in a classroom filled with students. They are genuinely engaged in their work. The ability to work at a pace that is suitable to the student helps each child strive to move forward even more. The teachers and staff are friendly and feel like family. This community needs Oak City Academy and the vision they share for growing the whole child academically and spiritually.

We are in our 2nd year at OCA, and we couldnt be happier! My child cries when its time to LEAVE school every day, and she is constantly teaching lessons shes learned when she gets home. If youre looking for a Montessori experience that allows your child to excel at her pace, this is your home.

I really wanted to like this school, but the way I was treated by the admissions staff made me realize that this is one of those pop up “Christian” schools that is more concerned with taking your money than educating children. Be very wary...these people will steal your money and refer you to the fine print on their website instead of doing what’s right.

This is my daughters second year at OCA and I am still in awe of how amazing this place is. I love that she is allowed to learn at her own pace and not be compared to her classmates. The students are celebrated for their differences and to see how they flourish in this environment makes my heart smile. OCA is a hidden gem, a special place where children are free to be who God created them to be.

This is our second year at OCA and their focus on positivity, authenticity and wonder shows in my children each day at the end of the day. We left public school feeling anxiety ridden and struggling to find joy in education. Now our kids are truly respected, have a positive outlook on learning and are excelling academically.Additionally, the administration team worked hard to get set up with the state so that we could benefit from a NC grant for one of our children’s tuition, while others refused to even let us tour based on our circumstance. We toured many schools and evaluated many tuitions and hands down the missions that OCA carry give me the confidence that our funds are being carried in good stewardship for the benefit of not just our children but the entire school population.

OCA had been a tremendous blessing to me and my family. As a parent, I want my children to not only excel in their education but I want them to be productive, kind, thoughtful members of society who put others before themselves. The administrative team has been like mothers to my babies, nurturing them, challenging them, holding them accountable and teaching little ones how to manage their emotions. OCA is truly like a family and I trust my kids are in good hands--what amazing peace to give a parent!

I have worked with OCA in various areas as an intern and Extended Day caretaker since August of 2016. While I have learned a plethora of valuable skills in my jobs, I have loved the personal interactions with the students the most. Over the course of these few months, Ive gotten to know and build relationships with each of the students. It has been a huge blessing to be a part of this school and the work that they do.

Do not waste your time, nor money. They switch teachers out way too often, the turnover rate seems high and theres only one classroom that fully captures the Montessori ideals. The biggest downfall is the curriculum, it does not follow many Montessori fundamentals, it seems they dont know how to do things the Montessori way and I dont think they are IMC nor AMC affiliated, so they fill in their shortcomings with classical education. You practically end up paying for public school with tid bits of Montessori education, theres little to nothing that integrates a true Montessori nature, the classroom sizes are questionably large as far as students, and with so many behavioral issues the teachers just never seemed to manage the class. I was often told my child had not been receiving lessons nor shown new materials because my child sort of fell under the radar ... In your own classroom? I just think the whole integration of Christianity and Montessori education was a complete miss here. They just arent meeting the criteria for a Montessori school, more like a christian charter.

Deuteronomy 6:5 says, Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. My son is now in his second year at OCA. OCAs vision, teachers, and environment have shown me that not only is this Bible verse Gods mission for us, but also the mission of OCA. Not to mention the academics,... my son BEAMS with JOY when he talks about his school work (who would have thought?!) Galatians 5 says, But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Take a peek into any OCA classroom, and this is what you get!

Our family has been a part of Oak City Academy for six years and counting. We have been with OCA since the day its doors were opened and we have been honored to be part of such a unique school. The teachers and staff have flawlessly combined the Montessori philosophy and Classical education in a Christian environment. When you walk into the classroom you will experience both a peaceful and efficient working environment. You may observe the teacher giving smaller group lessons, while other children may be working independently or with a friend. The Montessori philosophy allows each child the freedom to work at their own pace and not feel left behind or bored. It is in this environment that Ive seen my children thrive and foster a deep love for learning. Also, I believe that the curriculum is very rigorous. Our children are being challenged and prepared for what is ahead. I am proud to say that my children have been testing grade levels ahead of their actual age and that is due to the excellent education they are receiving at OCA.Another value I see at OCA are the teachers and staff, themselves. They are the ones that set the tone of the school environment and classrooms and they have exceeded my expectations. When you choose to send your children to a school, you really want to know if their teachers are going to love them like you do. Of course, there is no replacing their own parent, but I am certain, because I have seen with my own eyes, that each of my childs teachers truly loves them and wants what is best for them. I know that Im sending them off to a place where they can thrive and where their unique giftings will be celebrated. We feel like we discovered a gold mine with Oak City Academy. We are so thankful to be a part of this school community and look forward to each new year. We hope that you will consider joining the OCA family.
