I consider myself quite selective when it comes to educational options for my children. From the first tour of STEM to the first semester at the school, I couldnt be more impressed with the caliber of the faculty and the rigor of the curriculum. With a First grader and a Middle Schooler, I am so pleased with the challenge, the care, and opportunity that STEM School Highlands Ranch has to offer. And the High School has 10 National Merit Scholars in its Senior class. That is unheard of! Good reviews are hard to find because happy people dont usually take the time to review - whereas disgruntled parents and kids just might. But I think its important to affirm the leaders of this charter school, who actually believe that children are capable of learning so much more than the basics. As the mother of two female STEM Students, I appreciate the confidence and encouragement they receive in accelerated courses from Math, Science, Language Arts, Engineering, Music - Wow!, and beyond. I now have one child in High School and one in Middle School. This is not a school for every child but if they are interested in the STEM subjects then this school cant be beat. The teachers are wonderful and the opportunities they provide are endless. It may not be considered a traditional school, but there are fewer and fewer schools that could be considered traditional. For my children, it has been the right fit.

I dont understand why so many people want to go here. The administration and board of directors are primarily focused on their own agendas and do little to address the many issues this school has. Teachers are among the lowest paid and are quick to leave, class size is ridiculously high, and testing has shown that academic growth slows when coming here. The only real benefits I have seen is that it appears to be a safer place to send your children when compared to the massive middle and high schools in Douglas county. The ability to move into advanced classes would be another, as my middle-schooler has been in high school math classes.Another major issue is the technology in the school and security policies. As someone with 20 years IT experience, I am shocked by how poor the systems and applications they use are. Ive witnessed them submit assignments online, only to be missing the next day and needing to be re-done. As for security, when my kids tell me that they arent allowed to change passwords and have to give their passwords to teachers, that is a big red flag. I believe that if you want a tech education for your children, youd be better off at the public middle and high schools. Some might be wondering why I keep my children here, and that is a valid question that I ask myself all of the time. I guess the risk of moving them and finding them worse off would be the primary reason. Drug and alcohol usage in the public (non-charter) schools is another. Our children are guinea pigs in an experiment that in theory should be beneficial but I fear that once there is enough data to do proper analysis, it will show that it was poorly executed.

I went there a year ago and I already see it falling apart, not only is the school a small former office building, but the school always under construction with barely any athletics, not even a swim team, a very young principal with very little experience and somehow it still gets great reviews somehow. Sure, the Technology, Video Production and Engineering are undeniably impressive. But it isnt enough to fix the bullet holes that the school still has, and its pretty much a boys club where theres really only five girls at the most in each classroom other than English and History.

I am a kid who attends this school, and I just want to talk about the lunches, one of the many problems. The lunch is so expensive, and not even edible. I have seen kids without money go hungry at lunch. They are so sad because they cant eat, and they just sit at lunch. They are good kids, who just dont have the money. Please lower school lunch prices.

I have two children that attend this school. They both love it, they are learning at a faster rate and have learned to be their own advocates when it comes to their education. I love that the school tends to have more like minded students and parents...less over the top than your average school in bad behavior. More responsible, & caring students. They really love the curriculum and I feel they will be way ahead of the game with what theyve studied as well as knowing how to get things done on their own without hand holding. The support is always there if its needed though! This school has a strong core and will continue to grow and thrive! Its unique and I feel a lot easier for kids to fit into. ~Sarah D.

The teachers are great, so are the classes and clubs, however faculty makes it terrible. I was literally assaulted on school property, the dean of students then made us delete the video of the kid attacking me, and they then proceeded to suspend me for half a day. Then they told me I was bullying the kid even though I had a list of over 10 people who saw it happen and knew I wasnt bullying the kid. Just do yourself a favor and dont let your kid go here.

This is the best school I have ever gone to. The teachers are amazing, as well as the students, the courses, and just everything about it. When I was deciding what middle school to go to, I was really unsure about going to STEM. I was worried about losing all of my friends and being lonely, but no, the second got here I started to make friends and it was like I had known them my whole life. This school teaches what we will be doing in the future and it is by far the best school I have ever been to. So if your thinking about going here, then go here.

Internet isnt great, but pretty good considering hundreds of people are downloading and uploading at the same time. Last year alone, we had 3 Spanish teachers. There are some good teachers, but it seems to me that they are always being forced out or moving away. Some of the replacement teachers are not very good. However, it has a very positive atmosphere that promotes education. There is always a group or two that you will fit in to.

Disappointed - just like any other school, dont expect an advanced learning based on STEM principles and or new methods of teaching that is lacking from US education. Lack of funding attracts inexperienced new teachers (look at the experience level 36% vs. state average of 82%) and probably bad teachers that got let go from other districts (they pay teachers less, so what kind of teach do you attract, especially when there is a teacher shortage in CO). Class room sizes are high 27 students/teacher vs. State of 17 students/teachers, so often kids are left to their own learning if you are head of the pack and behind the pack. Our kids tested at the same level going in and after a year at the school, meaning a year wasted even though they were designated in the gifted program. I also think they use a lower standard than other schools so their scores seem to be higher. Kids came from Cherry Creek and the district is much better and challenging. The Principal is useless in holding teachers accountable, basically old school I support our teachers mentality. The school also systematically weeds out certain demographics after the so called non-discriminatory lottery and teachers talk about parents behind their back.

Bunch of kids here who dont like school posting reviews that dont mean anything. I see it as just a way they vent their frustration. This school has problems any school has, a few teachers that many wouldnt consider the greatest and a few management issues, but overall is a really good school with how they teach. If you actually care about academics and arent just reading some (pretty terrible) reviews on the school to see other students vent frustration and call the school terrible for many unjustifiable reasons, then its good. They dont teach you to repeat information, they teach you to find information and solve it yourself. Negatives are definitely the WiFi, as it is a technology based school.Edit- From the outside, the financial situation looks very strange and Im not sure of the severity or incompetence, so Im not going to comment on it.

This is a great school with amazing programs, classes and opportunities. The staff is wonderful overall. Of course there are some teachers that are not as good as others, but those teachers have improved dramatically and will continue to as the STEM administration has implemented multiple instructional coaches to aid in teacher development. STEM was also audited recently, and they not only recieved the highest score on the audit, but there were no suggestions for how the school can be more financially transparent or responsible with its funds!! PLEASE do your homework about this school before you believe ANY of the numerous FALSE accusations toward the administration that are stated in many reviews here. The administration does not hesitate to remove ineffective teachers, which is a wonderful quality, but then people complain about teacher turnover! They cant win! STEM is a unique school that is always innovating the way they do things. So change happens according to what is best for students, and thats the truth. If you fear change, and refuse to do your due diligence to discover the TRUTH about this school, then it is not for you to attend STEM.

This school requires teachers to give students an A, no matter what. They say the students are advanced, but that is not true. These students are average, at best. More than 25% are seeking/receiving special education services - most of these are demanded by the parents for illegitimate reasons (parents believe a special education label will guarantee an A for their child). This is a Charter School and funding depends on attendance, so it is imperative for teachers to provide grades that make parents happy, and repeat customers. This is a one-to-one school where students have access to cell phones and laptops at all times. Parents complete assignments for their child while the student plays games and watches YouTube videos during class time. Students are not held accountable for learning by the school or their parents. The administration is not supportive. Parents will bypass the teacher and go directly to the board for ridiculous issues, threaten legal recourse and subject teachers and administrators to verbal abuse. Parents humiliate teachers on social media! The teachers are gossipy. This is a school catering to white privilege and supportive of discrimination and prejudice. This is not a school for everyday people. It is a school that is subject to the whims of their clients. Many charters pull out all the stops to keep enrollement up, even when it is not in the best interest of your child. What they want is the money, and your child will be a pawn in that endeavor.

My children have been attending this school for 2 grades now with one newly entering into Kinde. The teachers are caring and attentive with the sole goal of creating success using multiple methods including having fun. We couldnt be happier with our choice. The work is intensive but my children are self respecting as well as hard working. They put 100% into their education and are rewarded for doing so. The many opportunities for social growth are there if you look. This year my son is going to Paris, possibly hosting a FES and my daughter leaves for a week in Virginia. These are experience that cannot be better met. Parents complaining about homework seem to not understand that the average child is given every opportunity to work in school to complete it with assistance or on their own. If your child is not succeeding it may not be the school for them. I think its safe to say that 1 child who is angry and ignored is writing the brunt of these reviews. Dont let it deter you this is a great school. If it isnt for your family thats fair enough just give it a chance. The drive line is another story and the people running should be commended however they dont follow their own rules and get angry when the parents try. We need a better system.

The teachers are great though they allow for a bit of political discussion, but will not allow it to go out of hand. The students are OK, the 7th graders have no chill, 6th graders are very timid, and 8th graders (which I currently am) think theyre better than everyone else. Another good thing about STEM is the amount of extra curricular activities. The kids that go to this school (Me being one of them) are about the most unlucky but also most fortunate kids on planet Earth (Im sure aliens still have a better education). The classes taught here can be interesting but are usually boring unless you have a real interest in the subject, we get to use engineering tools that most kids cant say they have used (e.g. 3D printers, band saws, scroll saws, drill presses, etc.) However, promises made by teachers are broken very easily, like the one every student has heard We ArEnT gOnNa GiVe yOu hOmeWorK as well as teachers saying we are going to do an activity that most might actually find enjoyable, only to replace it with note taking and average school work. In addition, electives have been completely reformed into having a strict curriculum, art has become absolute garbage in which you arent allowed to talk almost at all and are graded purely on whether the teacher likes you and if you have skill or not. The teacher I had last year saying on the last day that quote We had given her nothing but the middle finger all year. Parents and potential teachers/administration reading this may think Im your average slacker, but Im an A and B student who strives for the best that can be done. (And for obvious reasons to not receive divine punishment Im not using my real name)All in all, most teachers at this school are fun and nice, but the teachers that many say are bad are really, well, bad. And like most kids at this age if you like other kids who like memes come to this school. Not to mention TSA if you go here you should definitely join.

You can put lipstick on a pig but its still A PIG! Administration is AWFUL..not in tune with how to support staff and faculty -- nor do they care. Director and CFO generously line their pockets with nice pay bumps yet only reward their few pets with exceptions to vacation time off, bonus and pay. Principal sees faculty as a nuisance; he is as inept as the facility janitor. Staff acts more like teenage girls regarding students and families -- gossiping and snickering -- very SAD. Thankfully the faculty are fantastic and devoted to teaching within their limitations. The Board of Directors needs an awakening..perhaps a revolt from the families. Hold the school to be TRANSPARENT as they claim to be.

People keep saying that STEM is a bad school, but ive been here for 2 years and I havent seen anything bad. In the reviews people are saying that STEM keeps you on a screen the whole time, but that is only part true. STEM has a P.E. class, and, during lunch, you are let you out to play football or something active. There is also a soccer team, lacrosse team, etc. There are also a huge variety of clubs, varying from chess club to beyblade club. People also say that the staff is bad, but that isnt that true. The staff are very nice and the teachers understand everyone and supports them. The school has a special teacher to help kids who are depressed or having emotional trouble. I had a friend from another school who was thinking of suicide, and I told her about it, and instead of saying Oh, sorry about that, she went in and spent days talking to the teachers in the other school to get him help. I have ADHD, and I feel very supported by the everybody in this school. The students are amazing, too. I have never, ever had such good friends. The people in STEM understand who you are, and accept you for it. And yes, the wifi is bad, but that is only because there are a couple thousand kids on on wifi (Rest in peace bandwidth). For the most part the wifi works. I do recommend this school for any kids who are into tech, because in the two years that I have been here I havent had a single problem. :)

Ok...Parents I am sure that you have read the other reviews talking about how this school doesnt have good education. Thats not true In fact Im a average student there and frankly its difficult. Your student will experience how it feels to have maybe 3-4 projects at a time. But the Teachers know what they are talking about and they all have graduated with high degrees in the department that the chose to work in. Yeah ok the wifi isnt great but with the expansion project that is expecting to get an upgrade. The biggest thing that every student wishes they had known starting here, is that if you dont stay on top of your assignments especially when you are sick it will eventually come back to get you. By now your probably freaking out about this but dont. Stem is a great school for students who want a challenge and that push to follow your dreams. Also most of this review doesnt apply to elementary students. Elementary students arent ready for such responsibility. But the teachers will spoon feed them with the proper skill set to take on responsibility and become little men and woman. To end this review I would just like to say one thing. I am a 9th grader at this school, and I have been going here since 6th grade. I love it. While is does have its kinks, and isnt a lot like a normal high school, its gown a lot since it opened.STEM is run on problem based learning and group work. It encourages science, technology, engineering and math, and helps kids learn things they might not learn at a normal school. As far as classes go, most teachers are really good, with a few bad ones every once in a while. The bad teachers generally leave after a year though, so its not that big of a problem. Classes are generally slightly difficult, and some give a lot of homework, but everything is manageable.**Note: Since there is a lot of group work at this school, if you arent really bad a certain subject, go for the honors classes, the biggest difference between regular and honors is the quality of people you work with.**As far as clubs go, there are mainly nerdy/geeky clubs, although sports have started gaining popularity, with a soccer team, a girls volleyball team, basket ball, cheerleading, and more in the spring. There are multiple robotics teams for different ages and interests, including FRC, FTC, FLL, and BEST. There is also TSA, which is one of, if not the, largest club in both the high school and middle school. There are also clubs for a variety of interests, including Amateur Radio Club, Allies in Diversity, chess club, D&D Club, Girls in STEM, Minecraft club and more. The best thing about this school?Everyone is a nerd or a geek. Everyone loves something, and will happily talk about this thing with anyone else interested in that thing. While this school isnt for everyone, I would recommended at least giving this school more time than a glance.

Think of STEM like a shoe. There is a shoe for every foot. This shoe seems cool because it is apparently high tech. It has one of those wireless pedometer things that sits in the shoe somewhere and then connects the shoe to the internet. In practice though, it isn’t all that reliable and constantly needs adjusting. Although there’s a tech support line, you are constantly on hold waiting to fix a problem that really shouldn’t be there in the first place if you had another shoe. Most often that means you can’t go jogging, but once that pedometer gets fixed you find yourself sprinting to make up for lost time.Think of STEMs Admin like laces of a shoe. A shoe’s laces are very important since they control whether or not the feet stay in the shoe. You know that thing at the end of the shoe lace called an aglet? It’s incredibly useful and is found on most shoes. Ah but remember, these shoes were on sale so they don’t have a aglet leading the end of those laces. Instead, they have a piece of tape that does nearly the same job… just not as well. The obvious thing to do is to replace the laces, but you just can’t seem to find ones that will lace all the way. In fact the laces seem to have become a bit frayed. They don’t seem like they can hold the shoe together quite as well as they used to. As a result, it seems feet are constantly slipping out of the shoe. In order to imagine how frustrating that is, think of it this way: If you had a boss that tried to keep everything together and he was decent at it, you’d be able to get stuff done and the company would be okay. Then imagine this: The boss was replaced with a figure in a good looking suit. Everybody looked and said, “that should help with our image” but they somehow overlooked the fact that the figure was only 7 years old, and didn’t speak English, and didn’t know what they were doing, because that figure was actually a donkey.Again think of STEM as a shoe. This shoe constantly needs duct tape repairs. Remember though that because this shoe isn’t a name brand, they had to make it out of different materials. There are hints of this industrial grade fake leather all over the place and then bits of newer lighter leather on about half of the shoe. The rest of it though is duct tape, and was put there because you were somehow convinced that it looked “modern.” There are quite a few stitch marks all over the place. Each year it seems that it makes sense to not buy a new shoe, but to simply change the one you already have. So you break out a stapler and some hot glue. You do a lot of thinking about how you should fix the shoe while your foot is out of it, but then for some reason you put your foot back in the shoe to actually do the repairs with hot glue and staples. It seems to take a while to get it to where you planned it to be but you tell yourself that it will be done probably before December since thats when Winter hits. You then realize it’s now April.Think of STEM’s School Spirt as the sole of the shoe. The shoe started out having a sole that had a good bit of tread. Though it walked with you a great distance, it never seemed to fade. Then the next year it started to get a little less traction. The following year you decided that you would see how the tread would hold up if you changed up your routine drastically. You then proceeded to run with the bulls in Barcelona. When you’ve completed you run, you look down to see your soles changed from their old white to a very dark black. When you were running you tripped over your laces at some point and it seems you have unknowingly stepped in some bull feces. You then drag that around with you for the next couple of years. (You can’t just wash that stuff away)STEM is like one of those no name shoes. A shoe you get on sale from the back of a store because the box was missing.

I go to this school, and all they care about is there public image, and would rather move tours threw the school than solving the problems with in the school.

The administrators are very rude and arrogant. They do not even know how to respect other people. This school really sucks!!!!

Dont go to this school if your really athletic. This is for people who like to be on computers the entire day. Way to much homework. Teachers do not understand that the students and children have other problems and things to do outside of school than 3 hours of homework each night.
