After training in New York, I was hard pressed to find a home to study in Los Angeles. I went from studio audit to studio audit, which felt like a series of very mediocre dates. I finally found Open City and its been incredible. Victor and Carlton are thoughtful and essential. As teachers, they both activate and hold the artist accountable in the most organic and palpable ways. Being in class felt like a privilege and a treat. I love the material, I love the discussions, I love the community. Open City is a wonder.

Victor has given me a plate to put my heart on. A space to DO. He has inspired me, changed me, ignited me. I am so grateful for the classes Ive taken and the actors Ive met. The quality of work at the studio is phenomenal. The atmosphere is supportive and kind. Victor has a sharp sense of truth and helps foster a love of storytelling and problem solving. I recommend OCAS HIGHLY.

If youre looking to really get your hands dirty in the craft of acting this is the studio for you. All the teaching staff here from scene study to audition technique to voice and movement will illuminate fresh ways to tell story and connect to character. And its not a result driven place; everyone is process-oriented in a way that has taught me to get out of my own way and engage in each step of the journey. Not surprisingly, thatโ€™s where I do my best work, find ownership, and truly enjoy what Iโ€™m doing. Cant recommend enough.

Caitlin York Rigneys classes in the Williamson Technique and Animal Work were a revelation for me. Caitlins understanding of the actors instrument is incredible. Shes somehow able to see through you to find the places you hold tension. In some cases, this uncovered deep emotional truths buried beneath the surface. Shes not simply teaching the technique but guiding each actor and each body through its own journey of discovery and release. Through this work I found a tremendous amount of freedom and access to my emotional life that I had never imagined before. I am a changed actor and changed man because of this work, and I have Caitlin to thank for that.

I love my scene study class with Victor at Open City Acting. Ive worked with him in a class setting, and one-on-one audition coaching for several years now. His direction is always tremendously helpful, inspiring, and supportive. He gives his full attention to every actor he works with. Big thumbs up :-)

Victor will forever and always be my favorite acting coach. If youre serious about acting and what it takes to really understand your character, he is the teacher for you. I went to sooo many acting schools before until I found him. Its the type of class where he helps you learn how to go deeper into the character yourself. Not a cookie-cutter or do what I say kind of process. You work together to be the best actor you can be. He cares deeply for his students and in the probably 5+ years Ive been with him Ive never seen him give less than his all.

Iโ€™ve taken classes with all three teachers: Victor, Clint and Carlton. Across the board the consistency of what they expect of their actors is a cut above any other experience Iโ€™ve had in Los Angeles. They expect the best and teach you the tools to get there. This studio is for people interested is truly doing the work.

If youre looking for a place with an ongoing passion for the craft, a relentless pursuit of finding your next level of excellence and arent afraid to get your ego checked along the way... then youve just found your next acting class. There are lots of cookie cutter type studios around town, that can leave you acting like every other actor... but wouldnt you rather be an artist filling in character with your own colors?

I donโ€™t have the words to describe how much I love working with Victor Villar-Hauser. His ability to look at a script and instantly break down it down is awe-inspiring. He can find the truth and beauty in all sorry telling. Heโ€™s a true magician in helping you to let your instrument release and bring out the life of the character in you. Heโ€™s gentle with brutal honesty topped with a layer of love for the actor and art of story telling. Victor and Open City Acting Studio will support and guide you to be the actor youโ€™ve always wanted to be. Iโ€™m grateful for him every single day!

Open City is God sent. They are currently running a two year mesiner program and offer a variety of classes to hone your skills. Voice, movement, scene study, auditioning, directing, commercial, psychology for actors, sensory for actors, script analysis, business for actors and are developing so much more.ย I dont say this lightly but the teachers are phenomenal. Each of them bring such a rich quality to the studio and there is so much to learn from each of them.Caitlin (Movement) ย is so in touch with the actors body and helps you tap into sides of yourself you didnt know existed. She helps you understand the blocks you carry inside and how to continue to work through it - so that your body is constantly open and available. She offers this amazing animal workshop which I highly recommend if you would like to deepen your work.Carlton (Co- Founder / Sensory / Scene Study / Meisner teacher and so much more) ย is an amazing actor and teacher. ย He breaks the information down so simply and pushes you to your limit. His sensory class gets you in touch with your own instrument and helps deepen your work.Clint (Co- founder / Film class / Script Analysis / intro to tv and film)is so informative and helps you breakdown the craft of acting in a way that gives you a different perspective on how to see it. He makes script analysis interactive and enjoyable.Erika (Voice Teacher) Is such a joy to work with. Just like Caitlin she gets you in touch with your own instrument. She works with you in such a gentle way but pushes you so that you can experience and hone the power that your voice has.Victor (Co - Founder / Meisner Teacher / Scene study / Directing / ย Auditioning for TV and film and so much more )When it comes to Victor, I know many that have studied with him can say, is truly one of kind. He has a crazy amount of passion for the craft, breaks down the information so simply so that you can understand it and take it in. Most of all heย makes you see the light at the end of the tunnel and makes you feel like you are fully capable of being an actor! Lord knows we have all had our moments LOLVictor is the type of teacher that is compassionate with you but takes 0 bull shit from you. He genuinely deeply cares for the craft and for the actors. When he teaches he sparks a fire in you and definitely pushes you beyond your limits. Victor to me has a special place in my heart because when I doubted myself and my skills - He believed in me and pushed me to see that for myself. ย I have the upmost respect and appreciation for him. I am currently enrolled in the Meisner program withย Victor. I have learned so much for him, in a way that I give myself permission to just experience, learn and not be so hard on myself. He gives you the opportunity to be free and make mistakes but calls you out when you are bull shitting yourself. At the end of the day you are doing it for yourself right?I am truly grateful for this journey that they have embarked in opening the studio.ย ย I studied with Maggie Flanigan in New York and struggled to find an artistic home in LA. However, soon found it in Victors scene study class and now in Open City.ย I always craved a community of artist that carry an intense fire in them and push one another beyond their limits. I know that Open City will be ground breaking and game changing in our industry.Again, I highly recommend this studio to any actor who is serious about the craft, that is willing to work hard for it, and also gives themselves permission to experience what may come up in the process. If you are looking for a quick fix or you dont like to put in the work, this is definitely is not the studio for you.Open City Acting Studio is currently located in theater row on Santa Monica Blvd at the New Collective. Parking is either meter or street parking. They take cash and card payments.ย You can also audit the scene study class to get a feel for it and they also offer private coaching sessions.Hope this review was informative, much love and success for those seeking to grow. xo
