I went there. It was pretty cool. The GSA is great. The end of the 8th grade hallway is radioactive. Mr. Branch was the best.

Middle school hasnt been the greatest of experiences. To begin, the Hamilton Floor Dust is probably toxic. To be fair, the custodial team is very understaffed due to budget cuts from the state, so it isn’t their fault. As for the social dynamics, unless you are popular, you may go through the day without being acknowledged by anyone other than friends or teachers. People tend to stick with one group and they don’t often let others in past 6th grade, making it very hard for people with no friends to find a friend group. It is especially difficult because people can be very self-absorbed and oblivious to others, but such behavior is natural from a group of pre-teens and teenagers. Another common behavior in teenagers is the buying into fads (kendamas, β€œ9+10=21”, Vine, etc.). For those who don’t take part in a fad, it can be and usually is very annoying and disruptive. In all fairness, teachers are trying to keep these fads to a minimum, but more action is needed. It would also be helpful if students were reminded more often that achievement isn’t the most important thing in life. So often I hear people saying that they aren’t going to get into their college of choice because they didn’t get all A’s, or that their parents took away their phone since they didn’t get a perfect grade. It is too early to be stressing over things that are so far in the future. It may only be in 4 or 5 years that we go to college, but we are only young once so we have to make the most of this freedom.A big issue is the overpopulation of this school. We are at least 150 kids over capacity, which is partly due a phenomenon dubbed the β€œEcho Boom,” or the grandchildren of Baby Boomers. Most of these β€œEcho Boomers” are in 6th grade this year, so after they pass through to high school the population of this school will most likely go down considerably. However, that doesn’t change the fact that looking down from the stairwell you can sometimes see a sea of 20 people in an area of 6 square feet. It’s terrifying! In gym class, there is a high advantage towards the jocks. It’s surprising how many people play soccer, and how obsessed they can be about it. Soccer seems to be a pass into popularity. In gym, they still make team captains pick teams for volleyball. It would be better if the lists of volleyball team members were scrambled, because right now the person picked last is obviously placed on the margin of the page. That can be very hurtful to someone if they were picked last. The gym curriculum could definitely use more diversity. There are only a few units which don’t include team sports or ball sports: track and field, archery, and gymnastics, which is replaced by Project Adventure, a course intended to build teamwork in a small group. In Project Adventure, there is a high ropes course along with a few team-building exercises. In the high ropes course, you are technically allowed to only climb a few feet if you want to, but in some cases, such as the Flying Squirrel, this is impossible, and if you don’t participate at all you could get a 0 on that course. Also, peer pressure could cause someone to do something they are completely uncomfortable doing. This course is very stressful for those afraid of heights.Disclaimer: I am in no shape or form implying that our school is the worst to be in. In fact, Hamilton has a much better environment compared to a lot of schools in this district. This review is purely to address the current issues in our school. There are also many good things, such as some teachers, which I didn’t go into detail on. The Hamilton experience is also extremely dependant on the classes you are in, and the people in your grade.Nonetheless, I can’t wait to get out of here.
