Manhattan Fencing Center is my happy place in the City! I started private classes with coach Vlad as my first contact with fencing. He is incredible. He has so much patience to explain me and provide me the tools to develop my skills while I enjoy myself. He always has a good sense of humor and a sensitive approach to teach me the discipline I need to learn to advance. I am a busy mom who fences for recreation purposes, and I have the privilege to have coach Vlad, MFCs great location/ very clean environment, and kind staff. It is my opportunity to offer my 4 years old son the motivation to start fencing soon, also with coach Vlad.

As parents of a 10 years old, we were looking for a sport environment that would entertain our daughter, develop her skills but also a place where she could grow up as a person. In Manhattan fencing and Coach Alex Sourimto we have found both. Valentina has been with coach Alex for the past couple of years and he has been fundamental for her growth as a fencer. We cannot thank him enough for the great coaching and for the total support which is extremely important at her age.Alex sincerely thanks and looking forward to more tournaments together. The facilities are always clean and well-equipped. You can just tell that everyone that works there absolutely loves what they are doing; the passion and dedication really shines through.Yury, the Head Coach and the owner, couldnt be more helpful and accommodating. All the coaches are fantastic, great with fencers, kind, and patient.Coach Sergey is phenomenal. He is greatly involved, truly loves fencing, and enjoys helping all fencers achieve their best. His students are happy and challenged. I actively see growth in my son’s abilities.I also love the honesty and integrity of this exceptional place.

I started fencing at Manhattan Fencing Center (MFC) since I was ten years old. I would attribute a majority of the growth that I experienced throughout my childhood to MFC. I highly recommend that you should consider fencing at MFC, regardless of what your personal aspirations in the sport are. MFC is extremely accommodating for fencers of all skill levels and ages. The first reason why you should consider MFC is its cohort of accomplished and dedicated coaches, who all strive to see you or your child succeed in both fencing and whatever future endeavors you might have. While I boast an impressive fencing resume (2x All-American, 2x Team USA World Championships Member, 3x NCAA Final Four Team Appearances, and countless national and international medals/championships), my accomplishments are dwarfed by those of students also trained by my coaches, which speaks to the level and quality of coaching that you will receive at MFC. I still connect frequently with my coaches (Sergey Isayenko and Yury Gelman), another testament as to how the coaches stay invested in your personal development, even after the completion of your fencing career. The second reason to consider MFC is the other fencers that you will meet, both young and old, who are all amazing and dedicated individuals in their own right. As aforementioned, many of the fencers are highly skilled (there are many Olympian fencers, fencers with Olympic aspirations, fencers on the Columbia and St. Johns teams, etc.), making each practice competitive and enabling you to get better more quickly than almost any other fencing club in the country. There are also many fencers that participate casually, which makes practices fun if thats more your cup of tea.Either way, come and try out MFC for yourself, you will not be disappointed!

I have been practicing at MFC for over 10 years. My coach is Mr. Sergey Isayenko. He has been my coach for over 5 years. I started fencing after I was 40 yeas old, so my progress is slow. However, he is patient and very polite to me. There are coaches who sometimes yell at students, but he is always calm and has no emotional ups and downs. There is a word he always tells me believe in yourself. This is my favorite word. Believing in yourself is important not only in fencing but also in life.

Our son has had the great fortune of being coached by Sergey Isayenko at the Manhattan Fencing Center since 2008. From Ben’s first en garde through many meaningful victories at the local, regional, national, international and NCAA competitions, Sergey has been there as a coach, a teacher and a role model. Sergey plays and coaches to win. Fencing is both physically and mentally quite demanding. To excel in the sport of fencing a person must be able to analyze and execute actions in offense and defense under pressure, while under attack and on the move and in fractions of seconds. Sergey expected commitment from Ben and in return for this commitment, he worked tirelessly with Ben to make him a competitive athlete. Sergey’s passion for sport and his work ethic is contagious so Ben was naturally more than willing to make this commitment and trust Sergey. Through their efforts together over the years, Ben has become a respected saber fencer, a respected competitor and has had a richer life. Ben trains with Sergey at Yury Gelman’s Manhattan Fencing Center. Yury’s wisdom, his competitive spirit, his insistence on fair play and hard work and good sportsmanship permeates Manhattan Fencing Center. Manhattan Fencing Center is where you will find people drilling, bouting, listening and learning the strategies, tactics and skills of fencing from dedicated coaches and seasoned fencers. Manhattan Fencing Center is an oasis in the midst of chaos where stress dissipates, where you will develop friendships for life. It is a place where you will compete night after night and day after day so that when you stand en garde in your first or last tournament you will be ready and fit so that you can go the distance. The opportunity to train at Yury Gelman’s Manhattan Fencing Center is a golden opportunity that will enrich your life. I am not certain of much but I am certain of this.

Coach Sergey (Isayenko) taught and coached my daughter for about six years from middle school to around her first year of college.. She became a really good fencer, from rank beginner to accomplished NCAA All-American and World Cup participant. Sergey literally became a part of our family, and I can tell you, he is a very special and talented coach! His friendly and understanding approach helped her through periods of frustration, and stress. His focus on technique, and his patience transformed her into a talented athlete which led to her gaining a lot of self-confidence that has served her well. She eventually fenced internationally, got scholarship offers, and became a college All-American. I was really impressed watching him work with her and he always took time to talk with her after the losses and disappointments, unlike some other coaches that just seem to disappear after the failures. After she stopped fencing I took up the sport in my mid 50s and though Sergey is not my regular coach at MFC, he has strip coached me at national tournaments, and I have to say, he is very positive, very clever, and helped me to have some very big days, which I enjoyed very much! I cant recommend him enough as a fencing coach and a person. - J. Kastor

I am about to celebrate my 74th birthday. I started to fence when I was 13. During those 60+ years I have had lessons from at least 20 different masters -- Russian, Hungarian, Rumanian, Polish, French, British, Irish, American. And now Ukrainian. I have been at my new club for about a year and a quarter, and am as happy as I have ever been. The club itself is spacious, well looked-after (especially so in the days of Covid) and welcoming. My new coach is 38, and I am his only veteran pupil. He is demanding, quick to voice both constructive criticism and praise when it is merited (not that often). He has a strong sense of humor, and a sense of how to get the best out of his pupils, whether it is an old lag like me, a testy teenager, or his six-year-old son, who sometimes accompanies him to training. He has a strategy for how to improve my, both technically and tactically, and I am encouraged to do my best for him. I wish my lessons were longer--20 minutes can go by in an instant--but from what I see both in my coach, Sergey Isayenko, and in his co-masters, I would recommend the club to anyone, whether beginner or international.

Under the leadership of Maestro Yury Gelman, this club is one of the preeminent fencing centers in the country. The most impressive feature of MFC is the care and consideration your child receives. Whether s/he is a novice fencer or potential Olympic contender, all the coaches devote their time and attention to every aspect of the fencer’s training. Coach Sergey introduced my daughters to fencing, and his enthusiasm instilled a lifelong love for the sport. He is the best coach because he is very precise and exacting but delivers his lessons with warmth and fun. The coaches at Manhattan Fencing Center set the bar for aspiring fencers of all ages and levels. My son arrived as a tender four-year-old, marveling at the olympians flying through the air with swords, and with the steadfast guidance of Sergey and the other coaches, grew to a hulking 13 year old of 5’10 who has consistently achieved national standing in his age group. He learned how to lose with grace, never to give up against the fiercest foes, to set emotions to the side and solve problems under pressure, and he’s still learning. If your child is lucky enough to train with Sergey, they will learn integrity, sportsmanship, and have their boundaries stretched with every session while knowing that they are safe and that their efforts are understood and appreciated. I have seen Sergey and all the coaches at MFC praise smart work and dedication over lucky shots. They act as mentors and role models to their students as a matter of professional standard. This is what yields the stunning results they see in the tournament space. This is THE place in NYC/NJ to train for excellence in sport and in life.
