This is where I train. There are many schools in the city but this one is truly unique. Experience it for yourself and challenge yourself. My body has changed dramatically and I am so flexible now. Also the community is amazing and so diverse. One of the main reasons I first got started at the Temple was because the school has retreats.

It is an excellent workout that put me in the best shape of my life. However, the USA Shaolin Temple is not a safe place for women. Ultimately I took Yan Mings advice of knowing oneself and being honest with oneself to heart, and I left. I know that I can not support this institution financially or otherwise.

I moved to New York from California April 28 2016 for the sole purpose of learning martial arts from this man, and it has been the best decision Ive made in my life thus far. The temple transforms you for the better it makes you question yourself and your habits and tendencies. Not only is Shifu the real deal but you can tell in his students the quality of his teachings, which is not only limited to moving meditation known as kung fu but also in the non-physical part. The class is perfect for any age or experience level. All the students are welcoming and extremely encouraging! If you fall we will cheer you on and clap to get you back up. More chi! Train Harder!

I have been training for 17 years.... wash on, wash off, wax on, wax off .... The physical training is superb, with Shifu a clear master of Kung Fu, Tai Qi, and Qi Gong .... as you train hard, you change to be the person you were meant to be ... its hard, its easy ... in the end, humility and balance will teach you everything you need to know, and training teaches you just that ....

A colleague introduced me to USA Shoalin Temple several years ago and I have been training there ever since. Not only will you get an incredible workout but you will find an incredible community of students ready and eager to embrace new students into the family. The Shaolin experience is so much more than just a workout program or your typical martial arts training. At temple you work out your mind as much as your body in what Sifu calls action meditation which you can apply to all areas of your life. In fact I have found that the key to how quickly or slowly you progress has a much greater correlation to your focus on mediation than your physical ability, which becomes even more clear when you consider that their are students of all ages, backgrounds, body types and physical abilities who excel in class. The people you will meet in class come from all walks of life and there is very much a family feel which is another reason why you will find multiple students in nearly every class that have trained under Sifu for years.

I have studied/trained/lived Chan philosophy/Kung Fu at the USA Shaolin temple for close to 7 years. The temple has been the most positive life altering experience I have had up until this point. Sifu has guided us through all kinds of pains, joys, and other journeys (and yes I have seen him every single time Im personally there, always training and always teaching.) You can learn something here in one second that would normally take a whole lifetime to understand. I highly recommend everyone to come train with a respectful, quirky, and honest community. I used to think it was too late for me to learn kung fu-- that I wouldve had to start at age 5 to have any skill. However, from witnessing the impact that training with Shifu Shi Yan Ming can bring, Ive learned that isnt true. Everyone starts somewhere-- some people begin training when theyre 5, some when theyre 50; Some can do a full split while others (like me) couldnt even touch their toes. Everyone pushes themselves beyond their imagined limits and it has been amazing to see the growth and transformation training brings. The 2 hours of straight cardio not only helps you gain strength in muscle, but also flexibility and endurance-- which will inevitably carry through to other aspects of your life. The USA Shaolin Temple has shown me the most difficult, yet most rewarding workout Ive had in my entire life as well as surrounded me with a community of positivity. Most people I speak to who are interested in trying a class fear the most that theyll make a fool of themselves, but nobody judges you at Temple. We all encourage and cheer each other on because there is an understanding that everyone is on their own path, always growing.

Two hours of cardio, stretching and authentic Shaolin kung fu from an amazing teacher!Shifu Shi Yan Ming brings his lifetime of study in buddhist philosophy and martial arts to NYC and translates them into a powerful experience during every class.Aside from the amazing workout and philosophy, the people who train at the USA Shaolin Temple form an incredibly supportive community. Training encourages you to question your limits, sweat harder than you thought was possible and then to apply these understandings to the rest of your life. Stretching your mind, stretching your body.Very highly recommended.

The sifu was teaching as well as a couple advanced students. The energy in the temple was awesome. Lots of sweat and powerful noise coming from each student. This type of training is the foundation of shaolin Kung Fu. The USA Shaolin temple was calling my name from that day forward. One of the most incredible experiences I have ever had as a martial arts practitioner!Shifu Shi Yan Ming is true to the essence of martial code and an AWESOME teacher! I have noticed some rather negative reviews posted on other sites and it really made me think…The essence of our training is based on who we are, as an individual, and what we bring to the table(temple). Mirrors are everywhere! Mirrors casting back reflections of self. We too are teachers the moment we walk thru the revolving doors. We teach fellow students by our positive and or negative behavior. We even teach our Shifu in over-standing who we are as individuals and pray that he nor anyone else would cast judgement upon us! We go with the hopes of just being free to be self while enhancing the mental, physical and spiritual selves. I am so proud to have become a disciple to Shifu because I over-stand that just like while learning a form, the mirror is becoming polished the more I PRACTICEand TRAIN. He has been an incredible source of wisdom in my life! In moments where I would question what exactly was being taught or not being taught became the moments when I truly recognised All the questions and doubts resided within my soul and Shifu showed the path in the walking contemplation. i.e. Lifes moments of sipping from each drinking well. I have had some negative moments there as well but that had nothing to do with the temple. These moment were manifested by some individuals who came with a completely different agenda. Pointing a finger at something should help you see 3 fingers pointing back at self but nonetheless, I know they were teachers as well. To me, the very basis of Chan Meditation. Flatten Your Heart! I once had a person denounce me as a true practitioner of the arts and as a healer because of a piece of poetry I had recited, Shifu has heard so much poetry spill from my soul on EVERY LEVEL! His words to me were quite simple, First he named me Fo (Buddha) then emphatically said NEVER STOP EXPRESSING YOURSELF! VERBALLY OR PHYSICALLY!!! The mirror became polished even more! Only Judge Thy Self! The Universe returns what you choose to release within it.How do I rate Shifu Shi Yan Ming and USA Shaolin Temple? There arent enough stars on this page or in the galaxy! Forgive my ranting on and on! I could easily write a novel about my experiences!AmituofoAmituofo!!AMITUOFO!!!

I have a decade-long relationship with the Shaolin Temple in NYC. I was introduced to the practice, philosophy, students, and Sifu through my brother who has been training here since more than ten years. Here is what I have experienced. The Temple -- The steps leading up to the Temple are a perfect contrast to what you see when you enter the Temple. Its a beautifully decorated place with vibrant colors and loads of positive chi. There are two changing rooms for each sex. They are large enough and kept clean by the students. The Training -- The classes are long enough for you to warm up, practice basic stances, move on to complex forms, and cool down. While the class may seem intense, it is highly rewarding. There are two levels and people move up based on their individual capabilities. I respect this philosophy because I believe that everyones best cannot be the same. Some students are chosen by Sifu to teach complex forms to newer students and this is training time for everyone. If you think Sifu isnt watching, you are very wrong. Sifu is highly aware of his surroundings. The Students -- Everyone at the temple is very supportive. They will encourage you to find your best and will work with you to achieve it. Our friendships go beyond training and we often hang out with each other inside and outside the temple.Shaolin Temple is like a home to me in NYC. Sifu has always welcomed me and my family with an open heart. He has trained me and enabled me to be more expressive. I have the utmost respect for him and the Shaolin Temple.Amitofu.

I have been training at the USA Shaolin Temple for more than 10 years. There are many reasons why I have remained at the Temple:• There is a focus on martial arts as mediation, not as fighting or self-defense.• This is a traditional, authentic practice that builds on 2000 years of Shaolin history.• Sifu Shi Yan Ming is the real thing - a wonderful teacher who grew up as a Shaolin monk.• The classes are absolutely incredible workouts and train strength, flexibility, and cardio.• Shaolin KungFu is a uniquely beautiful, dance-like acrobatic martial art form.• The Temple community is full of kind, interesting people from all ages and walks of life.• Classes are electric and everyone supports each other regardless of your level of experience. But dont take my word for it - come and see for yourself! We would love to have you visit us.Amituofo!

Authentic Shaolin Kung Fu, Qi Gong and Tai Chi just like they do it in China. I have traveled to China and this is exactly how they do it--Sifu does not hold back like many masters. He will teach you no matter who you are because he believes the Shaolin Temple belongs to everyone. Respect. If you train this style hard you will be fit, fitter than you have ever been, and I say this having played rugby for 13 years, wrestled in high school and college, and having ran the NYC marathon. Sifu is a Shaolin master and Shaolin Kung Fu is his life, no BS. And as a Monk, Chan philosophy is available to you. Sifu was the first of the Shaolin Monks to defect from the Chinese communist government to the US in 1994 so that he could spread Shaolin martial arts and philosophy the way it was meant to be. At the end of the day, any true martial art is about the philosophy it imparts to its practitioners, and what Sifu teaches is a true martial art.

The Usa Shaolin Temple is an American cardio class and is not the real shaolin temple. None of the teachers are shaolin monks and they are constantly being caught giving students bad information. The Sifu believes money is Green Chi providing a unique glimpse into his deranged Shaolin fantasy combined with his greed. Avoid Sifu Shi Yan Mings classes and exercise on your own terms as he will actually constantly ask you for more money while you work out. If he wants more money he should simply spend less money on Special Water (Liquor) and buy groceries instead of going to expensive restaurants.

Training at this Temple literally saved my younger brothers life, building a core of muscle that completely surprised his surgeon at Brookhaven Hospital, where he was taken after a terrible car accident. The first thing post op that the surgeon asked us was what does your brother do? We stumbled around for an answer before finally we realized what he was asking us. He said he had never cut into anyone like that before so he really wanted to know what he did for exercise. This is 1500 years deep of Chan action language training. You push yourself. Plus, two incredibly fly locations, which if you are familiar with Shaolin history in the United States, everyone and their mothers uncle said they were going to build a Shaolin Temple upstate NY in the mountains, and Shifu Shi Yan Ming did it.

I have been training at Temple for over a decade, and, while initially, I started with a I want to be a better fighter mindset, over the years, through the course of training, I have ended up becoming a better person.Physically, I am definitely stronger, and more flexible than when I started (even though I am 10+ years older), but, more importantly, my mind has become more agile, I can concentrate for longer periods of time, and have developed a mental endurance and self reflection where I can think myself into better frame of mind. This is truly what martial arts is about, in my opinion.Specifics about class: Physically challenging, but fellow students are generally very supportive. First half of class is aerobically intense, as you practice what you have learnt, at a very fast pace. Middle of class is a short stretch break where, since the body is already warmed up, you can actually push yourself into deeper stretches without injuring yourself (think Bikram Yoga, but you have produced your own, internal heat!). Second half of class is spent either polishing what you have learnt previously, or learning new movements/techniques, etc.In closing, I have trained Karate (middle-school), Aikido and Kungfu (college), Wing Chun and Kickboxing (early professional life), and then came to USA Shaolin Temple. Every place was different, and special in its own way.Any school, including the teacher, is evolving, as are you. Its not a static situation. So, The key to finding a school that is appropriate for you is to try it, spend some time there, and then, to decide if you are co-evolving harmoniously. If yes, then you have found the right place!Good luck on your personal journey. Amituofo.

Before you sign up you must understand the difference from a fictional advertisement and what the place actually is. The mystical temples from the movies are not the same as this financial business. Shi Yan Ming is an advertisement to attract customers, he does not teach the classes. The identities of the student teachers are hidden as is all information on the place. They dont substance test the teachers and many of them dont last long as they are fired for various crimes (substance abuse, recordings without consent, theft, etc). after 1 year of classes I still know the same 4 moves as every class is a cardio workout, its not an actual Kung Fu school, its cardio. Its ok exercise but overpriced at 150/ a month plus lots of other charges.

The Usa Shaolin Temple is a highly advertised Wushu cardio program and is a great way to exercise. Alot of alternative and interesting people form the line up of students and feels cool to be a part of it. Sifu Shi Yan Ming is a character played by a man named Duan Gen Shan who is produced by his current wife Sophia Chang. He also has children with a woman in China as well. His amazing abilities include deflecting the tip of a spear with his neck, reflecting metal blades with his skin and other such nonsense. He is advertised alot but doesnt actually teach the classes, he teaches about 20 minutes of stretching while student teachers who are not very skilled teach all the students. Classes cost 150 a month an there are alot of hidden fees and taxes. There is clearly a divide between the people who run the program and the students who are constantly taxed. This place has potential to improve to be more authentic and I have since found better ways to exercise (and alot cheaper).
