This review is specifically about the alumni services/job search support. I graduated in August 2018 from the part-time-program. I entered in my second job search in April 2019 feeling uncertain because my first job out of Hack Reactor was not pure software engineering. The alumni team was really helpful in ensuring my resume and experience would be enough to interest recruiters, and they connected me with a number of companies off the bat which was hugely helpful in building my job search pipeline. The alumni team checked in with me regularly on my progress, always offering helpful advice and guidance. Negotiation help at the end was hugely helpful in not getting myself stuck with low offers and bad deals. Overall, the biggest thing that helped me was just having someone who understood the industry and job market really well. Quite a bit was different with my preferences from the first job search to the second. I can say with confidence that the Hack Reactor alumni team can and will adequately prepare you for both and beyond.

Something special is happening here. If I close my eyes and imagine my dream coding school, this would be it. The curriculum is intense and challenging asking you to meet a new challenge literally everyday. One day you will be asked to master a front-end framework, the next you will need to spin up a server, and then soon you will need to implement a relational database. Its hard to breath at times but you will be surrounded by some of the brightest, hard working, and nicest people you will ever meet both as your instructors and as your classmates. My classmates had backgrounds that varied from having Ivy league law degrees to being professional poker players and bartenders. Its an amazingly eclectic group of people with the only common denominator being a passion to code and a willingness to help each other.Nothing is taken for granted at this school. Thought and evaluation is put into everything in this school from the class structure and content to the transparency of the blinds on the windows and the comfort of the chairs we use. Attempts to improve the school are implemented constantly. The hard work really shows. Its hard to get into Hack Reactor (I was not accepted the first time I applied and had to work hard to learn improve my coding capability for my second interview) but if you can show a willingness to learn and rise to difficult intellectual challenges while being a great person to be around for long hours and in tight quarters, you will be accepted. In short if you get accepted to Hack Reactor, go to Hack Reactor.

As a former mechanical engineer, its in my opinion that one of the most important skill sets every engineer needs is autonomy. Hack Reactor does a great job of building your autonomy. As you move along through the curriculum, they systematically remove more and more scaffolding until youre building full stack applications on your own and solving real engineering challenges. The staff is great, and they all have invaluable industry experience. The lecturers have a commanding knowledge of the curriculum and they practically beg you to ask questions because they want everyone to understand the material. The mentors, coaches, and counselors are all very eager to help out. In only three months, they build a relationship with you where you feel like youre part of a family.I had a great experience at Hack Reactor. I received the guidance that I wasnt getting from self-study, I learned to push myself further than I thought was possible, and I made some life-long friends along the way. That being said, youll get what you put into it. There is an endless amount of information out there. They teach you to explore new concepts, and they challenge you to go beyond the core curriculum. That was my experience at Hack Reactor, and I hope my review helps others get a clearer picture of what Hack Reactor life can be like.

Hack Reactor was an amazing experience, but most of all it was challenging. Class starts at 9am Mon-Sat and end at 8pm each day. I would normally not leave until 10pm. The curriculum is really thoroughly developed, and I feel it provides a great deal of tools for a software engineer. It takes a large amount of trust in the curriculum and staff, but its honestly a test for yourself. You should expect to, at times, feel stressed at Hack Reactor, because they offer an environment where you are expected to make elaborate applications with frameworks and technologies you may have never used or heard of. They bring on the pressure, and you will learn that it is okay to feel that way and to succeed. One of the best things about Hack Reactor is the peers you will see there. There are very intelligent and driven people there, and being in that environment can cause amazing things to happen. Hack Reactor was an awesome experience and I am thankful I had this opportunity!

Were there moments over the last 3 months that I wished I had an entire 2 day weekend? Of course there were. Was there ever a time that I regretted my choice to join Hack Reactor? Not even a second. This course is packed with intensity. It relentlessly dumps incredible amounts of knowledge into your brain and it will fatigue your mind and body as you try to retain it all. But all the while you are in the trenches with talented, interesting people that will become some of your closest friends. And somehow at the end of it all, you emerge not just as a far more equipped software engineer, but also as a more complete and well rounded individual.I would recommend Hack Reactor to anyone who appreciates quality, and who recognizes that the most satisfying experiences in life are earned with hard work and commitment. It is not easy to get in here, and for good reason. The curriculum gets difficult very quickly, and the first 6 weeks is all pair programming. But you can rest assured that your pair has prepared just as you have. Everyone at Hack Reactor is in it together, and no one gets left behind. Just be sure youre in good shape when you start the program, and you will be happy here.

Ive just completed my 13 weeks at Hack Reactor. The experience is like nothing Ive been through before. Its clear from day one that, despite the success of the program (as evident by their post graduate hiring statistics) that theyre never satisfied and always looking to continuously improve. They also clearly listen to the feedback provided by the students (you can thank HR20 for the second microwave on the 6th floor). The program itself, is hard. It is a lot of work and there are many many hours that need to be committed. Hack Reactors curriculum really shines in this area, in my opinion. Despite the multitudes of subjects that are covered and the many hours of lectures, pair programming, and solo programming -- they manage to do it in a way that doesnt burn you out. On the subject of lecturing, every lecturer weve had are absolutely fantastic at their job. They can describe the subjects in intimate detail and are extremely patient when it comes to questions and clarifying the issue at hand. Overall I cannot recommend the Hack Reactor experience enough. If you are passionate about becoming a software engineer, definitely apply to Hack Reactor.

What an amazing experience! Im so thankful for having this awesome opportunity to have been a part of the Hack Reactor community. Hack Reactor truly changes your life and turns a motivated individual into a truly exceptional software engineer. Having just come out of Hack Reactor, I can say in full confidence that I am ready to take on any software engineering challenge thrown my way.The curriculum is very well thought out and helped me understand aspects of JavaScript on a much deeper level. One of the key aspects of interviews is the ability to implement/solve problems on the spot and this ability was honed by the study of data structures/algorithms and white-boarding sessions.Being able to work in groups and gaining the pair-programming experience has been truly enlightening. I have made some amazing friends and found ways to improve my technical communication skills; things that I would have a much more difficult time working on had I studied JavaScript on my own.I want to thank Hack Reactor for accepting me into their amazing program and not only teaching me to teach myself but also helping to build a great community of strong, like-minded individuals. All the sacrifices I have made to go through this program has been more than worth it!

When learning a new language, immersion is the quickest way to become fluent. When learning how to write software, working on actual projects and building real things is the best way to become a quality coder. At Hack Reactor, you are immersed in Javascript for about 11 hours a day, 6 days a week. You cant help but learn Javascript and a variety of frameworks. You also spend the majority of your time writing code (backed by informational lectures and learning material). You will become a workhorse Javascript engineer.I highly recommend anyone who is driven to learn Javascript to apply and work towards attending Hack Reactor. I just finished my 13 week stint here and never once have I thought it was a bad decision.

The task of becoming a competent software engineer can seem like scaling a mountain of unthinkable height, especially if you’re coming from a non-technical background. Learning enough to get into Hack Reactor seemed like reaching a base camp - getting to the next checkpoint seemed like it would be years away. But within three months, Hack Reactor helped me get there - and so much more. Hack Reactor was one of the most intense educational experiences of my life and a major inflection point in my career. I heard about Hack Reactor back in 2013 when it was still called Catalyst. When I first heard about it from a college mate, I thought: Bullshit, no way is it possible to learn enough to become a full stack engineer in three months. A year later, two more people I knew also went through the program. All three of these people I know personally all have software engineering jobs in the Bay Area. So I thought Id give Hack Reactor a shot.Their curriculum has gone through iterations of testing and development, and it continuously gets better. I came in with basically no coding experience and was always worried that I wouldnt be able to handle the rigorous program. The classmates you meet here, and the staff and alumni are all super supportive, and genuinely do look out for you. Hack Reactor really does care about its students and their outcomes, and they will work with you even before the program starts. The skills Ive learned, the network Ive built, and the experience Ive gone through at Hack Reactor is truly priceless. If youre unsure or still hesitant, just give the application challenge a test. I found it fun, and after finishing it, I knew that Javascript would be a fun language to learn... and Hack Reactor is the best at teaching it.

Hack Reactor has been a tremendous experience for me. I joined the program with much skepticism, and throughout the course felt weary of the entire learning process, but somehow finished the course a competent full-stack JavaScript developer. The key to the program lies within the passion for continuous growth and development. Being surrounded by people who were as passionate about software engineering as I was made it difficult to leave some nights. I found myself more motivated than ever. Hack Reactor also puts a lot of care, thought, and dedication into creating the best possible program that will help their students reach their full potential, and welcomes constant feedback from each person, to constantly improve and adapt to student needs. The program is incredibly rigorous and designed to foster the kind of growth and autonomy needed to succeed in software engineering. I entered the program expecting it to be very difficult, but what I didnt expect was how much fun I would have. Hack Reactor teaches more than full-stack Javascript. It teaches you how to think like a software engineer, how to pick up and learn new technologies quickly, and how to build awesome projects with a team. These skills are much more useful in the real world, and something you will not get from programming sites like Codecademy.I left my comfy job in IT to attend Hack Reactor Remote Beta. Hack Reactor Experience-Is It Worth It?Like many people in the program, I had my doubts coming into Hack Reactor. It simply sounds too good to be true. As my fellow Hack Reactant and good friend, Alex, puts it:Coming in, I am 70% sure that Hack Reactor is a scam.Marcus and Fred simply blew all the doubts out of the window in the very first week. They are very passionate about teaching, and they do so extremely well. They are both master communicators, and when combined with deep wells of knowledge and passion for codes...magic happens.-Course LayoutHack Reactor got this down. They revise the course every single cohort, and each iteration makes the program better. The combination of intense learning in the first half and building cool stuff in the second half is the most efficient way to go.-StudentsPeople of all backgrounds and levels of experience attend Hack Reactor. Not only does Hack Reactor screen for very passionate and smart people, they also screen for good people. I can proudly say that everyone in my cohort is a genuinely good person. This makes the learning experience so much better.-Most Unexpected PartThe most unexpected part is the deep bond I built with my cohort. I was so focused on learning and programming that I did not spend a lot of time actually enjoying San Francisco. But, I can honestly say that the last 3 months has been one of the funnest time in my life, all because of the awesome people in my cohort.-Advice for StudentsKeep building. Personally, I have very bad memory, so I need a lot of practice to really internalize something new. Its cool to read/hear about concepts, but building things is the way to actually be a good programmer. Besides, its freaking fun. Oh, and also attend as many hackathons as possible. Theyre super fun and are great learning experiences.-Something I Wish I KnewToy problems are freaking important...yes, Ive been told that over and over again, but I wish I took the advice to heart. Now that Im job searching, I really wish I did a few more toy problems everyday.-Biggest DownsideSuper busy the entire time. Hack Reactor was a blur—one incredibly fast journey. Like when you’re on a train zooming past the country side and you turn to look out the window and let your eyes focus on nothing to take it all in. But then you realize all of it slips by you so you turn your head in short arcs; whipping from one edge of the window to the other. Moving at the same speed, you start to pick out individual parts of the scenery. Tufts of Fountain Grass, and the feathery cluster of seeds that sit like caterpillars on each tip; each hole in the wire fence strung just beyond the train tracks; the crinkled ruts wedged in split tree bark; all these details appear as you seek out what makes up that giant blur. Your neck starts to hurt, but it doesn’t matter—what’s a little discomfort when you can see everything so well? For three months we rode that train, always moving from one thing to the next at breakneck speed. We lived fast those days—it was what we wanted. All of us had put our lives on pause for this ride. We came from very diverse backgrounds, but the idea of learning to code 11+ hours a day, 6 days a week excited us all the same way. Aboard that train, exploring the world of javascript, it felt like no one on earth moved faster than us.

Im an alumnus of Hack Reactor and after attending I can unequivocally say that it was one of the best decisions of my life. Before attending, I researched and considered a few of the software immersion programs available. I decided on hack reactor because of their emphasis on full stack JavaScript development, the reviews and their presence on the web, and after an on-site visit to the program. Attending any software immersive program is a huge time and monetary investment for anyone, and until you attend its natural to be cautiously skeptical of the claims and promises they make. Based on my personal experience at Hack Reactor I can report that the program exceeded my expectations and delivered on the claims it made. The curriculum is great, and the program not only teaches you full stack JS web development but it also trains you how to learn new technology and frameworks rapidly. This skill is vital as a developer given how fast moving industry trends can be. It was also an amazing environment to learn in. The instructors were first rate and all of them have relevant industry experience at highly competitive companies. Also, the students that attend all share a tireless zeal for web technology and the programs material. This enthusiasm and dedication is infectious and the people that attend are not only elevated by the program but also by each other. Its not uncommon for most students to spend more than 12 hours a day, 6 days a week, at Hack Reactor. This is a time investment that seems lofty from the outside, but once youre there tackling challenging projects in the HR space with your fellow cohorts you cant help but stay longer. All in all a great experience from an amazing program that lived up to its claims.

All of those objectives have been exceeded. The program has been so much more than a really challenging software development bootcamp. All the its hard and i learned a lot comments and reviews that I read are accurate. In addition to those, however, Im extremely satisfied by the soft-skills training and the support of the instructors and staff at Hack Reactor. There are so many opportunities to learn about the industry from Alumni and Guest Speakers. There is so much encouragement to participate in the community, and to introduce yourself to potential mentors in the developers and guest instructors that come through the program. It really has been a tremendously awesome experience, and Im very glad that I have spent the last 12 weeks working, and making friends, with the wonderful group of students and staff at Hack Reactor. Hack Reactor was an absolutely amazing and life-changing experience. I know it sounds corny and overused, but it 100% changed my life for the better. The program drove home the idea that the opportunity to attend the program is a rare one, and I should respect that opportunity and take full advantage of it. With that opportunity, I am expected to work HARD, and that hard work WILL pay off. In the first few weeks, the lecturers reinforced and made relatable a very common saying, that success is 90% hard work. That really stuck with me, and pushed me.One of the best things about the program is that the program itself, aka the journey, is also the prize, as the journey is the learning that will allow us to pass tough interviews, showcase learned skills, and ultimately land a good paying job in software engineering. That mentality helped me stay motivated for the duration of the program. One key differentiator between Hack Reactor and traditional colleges is motivation. I attended college because of expectations, not because of my own desire. I attended Hack Reactor after attending college, a graduate program, and after working for a few years and feeling extremely unhappy and stuck. This situation added a ton of motivation for me to work my hardest and to do my best, to have a successful outcome of finding a full time software engineering job.The curriculum was also fantastic. The day is broken up into bite sized chunks of lecture, exercise, and deeper dive small projects. This structure helped me stay focused and helped me work for longer, especially compared against the long monotony of self-study and test-prep of traditional schooling. Combined with the long hours of 9AM - 8PM Monday - Saturday, I learned so much so quickly, and was able to apply the learnings immediately. One of the best aspects of the program in my opinion is the section on writing better resumes. I found it immensely helpful. It clarified for me what was important, what was unnecessary, and more importantly gave me a good formula for better resumes.Post-graduation, the job search support I received was absolutely top notch. The outcomes team told me exactly what I needed to hear to stay motivated, to avoid imposter syndrome, to keep applying, and to stay organized and on top of my interviews. They were extremely transparent with aggregate previous student outcomes, like average number of jobs applied before offer, average number of technical interviews, on-sites, etc. And that again set the tone that the market is huge, and through perseverance, I WILL land a job. Most importantly for me, they demystified and simplified the job search process to a math problem: x% of applications gets to a phone screen, y% of phone screens get to an on-site, z% of on-site interviews lead to an offer. Or the other way to think about it: assuming one is just as likely as any other candidate to get a job, and there are x average applicants per job opening, then an average applicant needs to apply to at least x jobs to receive an offer, on average. One of the amazing services the outcomes team provided was helping us and consistently reminding us to keep track of every single application, phone screen, and interview through a work tracker. This helped me stay organized, and helped me to continue working even when I felt like stopping because I hadn’t done enough that day.One of the outcomes team members, Marlene, also helped me navigate the negotiation process. She was completely amazing. Armed with the knowledge of thousands of other offers and industry norms, Marlene helped me understand what was likely, what was reasonable, and that it never hurts to ask for more. She helped me get a lot more than my initial offers.During my second job search Marlene continued to help me, acting as the Alumni Director. She helped me navigate the simultaneous job search process as well as multiple offer negotiation process. She’s so knowledgeable and experienced, I don’t even know how to talk about it.

My classmates pushed and motivated each other, and it becomes a contagious environment.Hack Reactor brings in the best in the industry to teach, including people from Adobe, Twitter, Walmart Labs, Google, etc. The instruction and curriculum are top notch. Some things that you should not rely on if you come here:- Dont expect a $110k salary. Its the median number, but: 1. the industry changes all the time. 2. it really depends on how well you manage your job search and present yourself to employers.- Dont expect to be able to use Hack Reactor as part of your value prop to employers. The name is very reputable in the coding bootcamp space, but most employers are still quite clueless into what it is. I came in with a healthy skepticism of HR, and bootcamps in general. 3 months to get all the knowledge that you need for a career change into full stack development just didnt seem like enough time, no matter how you cut it. To some extent, I still think thats true -- but what HR promises isnt to transform you into the best of the best full stack dev, but to arm you with the skills that you need to survive and evolve in the tech world. I think they did a good job of that.Personally, I went to Hack Reactor because I wanted to be immersed in an environment where everyone is passionate about coding. Learning on your own is fine, but it is completely different when you learning and bouncing ideas off of peers. Know what you want from Hack Reactor before you apply, and know what they are offering.I went from barely being able to wrap my mind around recursion to building full stack apps in just a few hours.

Hack Reactor is a great way to kick start your Software Engineering career. I started the course with barely any coding experience; three months later, I have built multiple full-stack applications. If you think the reviews are fake, just do a simple LinkedIn search on the reviewers. I was also skeptical at first.

Attending Hack Reactor is one of the best decisions Ive ever made. Being immersed in a community of the best and brightest has been a transformative experience. The school is very serious about producing quality software engineers. Not only do we develop a mastery of JavaScript (to the point that after the first few weeks we find conceptual mistakes in MDN documentation!), but we also dug into computer science fundamentals like data structures, algorithmic design and efficiency and database design. Our lead instructors are simply amazing. They are capable of clearly distilling complicated concepts into short, concise lectures with a clarity and finesse Ive never seen before. I spent hours of self-study time trying to understand JavaScript inheritance and instantiation patterns, but it led to a shaky understanding at best. After a single one hour lecture, I walked away with a clear understanding of the topic. In addition to a world class instructional curriculum, Hack Reactors real magic is the progression from guided instruction to autonomous work. At the 6-week mark, we start building our own projects from scratch. Over the remaining 6 weeks, we develop a confidence and autonomy that no problem is unsolvable. Today, I am 100% confident that I can pick up any technology I need to solve real engineering problems. If you want to become a software engineer, be a part of a thriving community of passionate, driven, and fun people, and experience a world-class education, apply to Hack Reactor. You wont regret it.

An immensely valuable experience.Hack Reactor has an excellent curriculum that touches all of the most important aspects of software engineering and prepares you for being a full-stack developer better and faster than anything else I have tried or thought of.I took some computer science courses in college, and they did a good job of teaching theory, algorithmic complexity, and similar topics, but I didnt learn how to build a product to launch in the real world.I took courses online to learn new frameworks and UX/UI design, but I didnt get the experience of working with a team, communicating effectively, or networking with other software engineers. No learning experience prior to Hack Reactor has come close to preparing me for so much in so little time. The staff is incredibly passionate and dedicated to the student experience. They are constantly improving every part of Hack Reactor. Its an amazing experience with fantastic people, students and staff alike. It far exceeded my high expectations and has been well worth my investment in time, effort, and money.

Sitting at my office desk five months ago, I wanted more. I wanted excitement and I wanted change. I wanted to be challenged! I wanted many more things than I was getting in my prior life (version 3.1 of myself at the time), and I had no idea how to get it. That was, I had no idea until I came across Hack Reactor.Hack Reactor positions itself as the premier coding bootcamp, and after attending their program I feel confident in that assertion. The curriculum is rigorous, practical, thoughtful, and challenging. The instructors are insightful, passionate, experienced, and adept at teaching. The students are wildly talented, interesting, diverse, and undoubtedly successful. Combined, Hack Reactor provides an unparalleled learning experience that has accelerated me onto an exciting new path.Perhaps the benefit that I perceive to be most rewarding is the relationships that I have gained and fostered over the three month course. Hack Reactor attracts extremely talented and motivated individuals who continually push each other throughout the duration of the course. By the end, entire cohorts become bonded through the shared experience and you find yourself part of a network of people that you value and respect. In summation, Hack Reactor taught me to code, my classmates taught me to push myself, and I taught myself that the future is what I make of it. Hack Reactor was a life-altering experience.

Im not exaggerating when I say that choosing to attend Hack Reactor was so far the best decision of my adult life. Thanks to this amazing program, I was able to take my career in a drastically different and IMO better direction. I came into HR with minimal programming experience after working for 2 years as a research analyst at a consulting firm. Four months later, Im a professional software engineer thank to an internship I never would have had the chance to do had it not been for HR.This transition did not come easily. Six days a week I worked a baseline of 10+ hours a day. This is normal for students in the program. In spite of the ultra demanding hours, the experience was super enjoyable because it was a pleasure to be surrounded by super smart, diverse, and driven classmates who became close friends and made time fly. Also, the synergy that is created by the combination of a very passionate/knowledgable teach staff and incredibly well thought out curriculum made my time spent at HR much more valuable and efficient than the same amount of time spent learning on my own / scouring the internet for disparate resources.Beyond developing Javascript expertise, Hack Reactor gave me the tools and confidence to tackle challenging and complex programs that I would have felt super intimidated by prior to completing the program. If you have the opportunity, I would 100% taking the leap of faith and enrolling in the program.

There are a few moments when you know your life forever changed. Hack Reactor creates one of those, sharply increasing your career trajectory and forging valuable friendships.I applied to H/R because I knew I love to program, but wasnt satisfied with working my way up to software engineer over 3-5 years. Its been the best decision Ive made. You will learn CS fundamentals, lots of frameworks, product engineering, and much more during an incredibly short time period where youll work extremely hard. The people who seemed to get the most from our cohort were the ones who stayed late, got drinks after, and generally bonded around the pain and euphoria of bending machines to our will.I cant recommend Hack Reactor enough. If they accept you, go; youll thank yourself a few short months later.

Im from New York. I thoroughly researched different coding bootcamps before I decided on Hack Reactor. The quality of my interaction with them and their hiring statistics set them far apart from the competition. I relocated to San Francisco just to attend, and it was the best decision of my life.I just graduated, and Im in shock at how much knowledge was crammed into my brain in just three months. This school is the labor of love of a lot of very, very smart people. Theyre constantly updating their curriculum based on the current leading technologies and student feedback. Not only have I learned all of the most in-demand frameworks, they have also taught me how to learn, which is much more invaluable. I now have the confidence to take on any unfamiliar framework or programming language. They also help you along every step of the job search process, and are invested in placing every their students in great jobs with competitive salaries. Its a transformative experience. Be prepared to work hard. Theyre the best for a reason: youre learning 14 hours a day, 6 days a week.

Hack Reactor is the best educational descision I have ever made. I was in the remote beta, and it was a very very rigorous program, demanding in the best ways possible. You work in a tight knit group of people and build amazing things. The lectures, sprints and support provided by your cohort and Hack Reactor are first class, like in the world. The co-founders and staff are there for you technically and emotionally (its demanding) are are super invested in your well being and future. Not going to lie, its a lot of hard work and discipline, but the atomsphere is very positive and friendly. Data structures, algorithims and CS principles are focused on as well as working on modern frameworks and tools. Like I said, went way over my expectations.

Hack Reactor is the best coding school there is. The tuition, while substantial, is worth it. I was in the remote beta program from March to June of 2015, and there was an option to defer up to $15,000 of the tuition until you find a job, which helps a lot if you dont have enough up front. Their curriculum is structured and tested, and it really works! I came in with almost no programming experience and I had doubts whether I could really learn enough in three month to find a job in software engineering or even be productive, but I didnt need to doubt at all. If youre hesitating, just apply and see where it takes you. Hack Reactor really cares about its students and their outcomes, and theyll work with you when you get accepted. If you cant make it to the onsite program, and wondering whether the remote program is on par with the onsite, I can assure you, it is just as good. We did everything that the onsite program does, and both use the same application process.

Hack Reactor is a school that transforms people into software engineers. I came in with a background in biology and wasnt confident that a few months at a bootcamp would really do much. But these past 12 weeks have changed my perspective on that, and it has been an awesome experience. Students are thrown into an intense and immersive environment, with other brilliant minded people, and get Javascript pounded into their brains. These months were difficult and rigorous, and thats exactly what should be expected. They force you to struggle and overcome problems autonomously, which is a valuable skill to have going into the tech industry. It has been an incredible journey and I highly recommend it to those looking for a programming bootcamp.

I was a member of the August 13 Hack Reactor cohort, and while its almost unbelievable to me, I am finishing up my first month of work as a front-end engineer. For anyone who doubts that this program delivers on its promise, Ill say that I had extremely high expectations and Hack Reactor completely blew them out of the water. I have an undergrad degree in Philosophy, but no prior engineering-related education or experience. The dedication of the instructors and staff is unlike anything Ive seen in an educational setting, to the point that the 12+ hour days would just fly by. The energy of the place is contagious. Nowhere is this more on display than in the ever-evolving curriculum, which manages to throw every student into the deep end of a given topic and still provide meaningful challenges to students who work through core concepts more quickly. There was never a chance to feel bored or unmotivated, the pace is just too fast. The instructors are also eager to get students feedback, and are open to constructive suggestions for improvement. To me, the most valuable trait of the program (if I had to choose) is the relentless emphasis on Learn By Doing. Every student undergoes a transformation from thinking I dont know enough to do this to I know how to figure this out. Yes, I gained the particular web development skills necessary to land this great job, but much more valuably, I learned how to identify the gaps in my knowledge and fill them in as effectively as possible. The icing on the cake here is that the people you meet at Hack Reactor (students, staff, and instructors alike) are all A+ people -- sincere, dedicated, intelligent, funny, hard-working people, all with interesting backgrounds, stories, and connections. My network has exploded with incredible contacts, as well as amazing friends. In short, attending Hack Reactor was the best decision Ive ever made. If you really love programming (whatever youve done so far) and think youre the type to thrive in a highly accelerated immersive environment, DO IT.

Coming to San Francisco and deciding to take a an intensive course to become a Javascript wizard by attending Hack Reactor could not have been a better choice. Hack Reactor far surpassed my expectations — in what I’ve learnt, in the quality of not only instructors and staff but also the caliber of the students they accept, and also in the outstanding assistance they provide throughout the hiring process.Hack Reactor doesn’t just accept anyone who “wants” to learn to program. They accept the best people, from all walks of life, who not only want to learn but are driven and have the intellectual strength to do so six days a week twelve hours a day for three months. It is no small undertaking, but everyone here from the students to the staff have such great attitude and drive, and are of a caliber that would be near impossible to find anywhere else. The people help make this but so does the environment. When you bring this many great people together, great things happen.Another thing that really sets Hack Reactor apart is the amount of support though out the hiring process. This is their goal. They want every student to graduate, and every graduating student to find a job. ..and quick. They don’t just push you out the door and say “good luck”, or set a goal of applying to 200 jobs in a week hoping that some will respond. Students here walk out the door confident and ready to tackle coding challenges and often have job prospects already lined up. Additionally, students here continue to receive support before, during, and even after finding placement at their first job. They continue to support their alumnus in any way possible — this is not by ‘contract’, but rather because they want to and care enough to do so.If you are considering an intensive immersive, skip the bootcamps and academies — Apply to Hack Reactor. You won’t be sorry.

Tldr; Hack Reactor provides the curriculum and the right people (motivated and smart) for you to learn web development concepts in pairs and by yourself. I can only speak of the staff in the SF office, but they were both experienced and helpful, although anyone expecting to be a software engineer should get comfortable with directing their own learning (aka not leaning on staff to figure questions out unless youre really stuck).Long answer:Going into Hack Reactor (HR), I wanted to learn to code as quickly as possible and to try to get to a top tier company. I chose HR because I know I wanted an intense / all-day everyday experience, and looking on LinkedIn I found that HR had way more graduates at top tier companies (Uber, Google, Facebook, Airbnb, Stripe, etc.) than other bootcamps.Within the first week of attending, I was very pleasantly surprised by the quality of my peers. They were more motivated and experienced than I expected, with several having graduated with Computer Science or Mechanical Engineering degress, and a couple having prior industry experience. Given that Hack Reactor is largely pair programming with your peers, they made a huge difference in how much I learned each day.I was also pleasantly surprised by the quality of the curriculum. It provided some direction, while letting us figure out the key concepts via code. In my experience, the only way to really learn coding concepts is to code them yourself, and then recode them. After finishing the curriculum the right way, and reviewing the concepts you didnt understand (by recoding them), you should be able to do both. When deciding on a bootcamp, it matters what your best alternative option is. Ill lay out the decision in my eyes from those perspectives as well.1. Bootcamp or self-study?There are cool opportunties like Free Code Camp that allow you to learn some javascript on your own--providing curriculum and peers via Slack to help you learn. I was seriously considerig these opportunities, but decided to attend Hack Reactor because I believed I would become profficient at least 2-3 months faster with Hack Reactors support. Calculating this tradeoff financially, if you take the median/mean ~100k salary/year for 2-3 months that you would have had to continue learning for to reach the same level, the upfront 18k fee becomes a really good deal if you can afford it.After having gone through the program, I think that the people and curriculum in particular make a huge difference in the rate of learning. While its conceivable that you could learn tht much on your own, you would need to be dedicated enough to work 10-12 hrs a day for 6 days a week, find your own curriculum to learn the key concepts, and to have smart and motivated peers to bounce your ideas off of every hour or two. If that sounds daunting, then Hack Reactor may be a good way to get the right structure to learn.2. Hack Reactor or another bootcamp?Several bootcamps suggest that they can help get you a job in software engineering. I read up on what the student experience was actually like, and saw that some of the bootcamps clearly had more intense experiences than others, which from my experience leads to more learning. Additionally, LinkedIn searches confirmed that only a couple of the bootcamps actually had graduates working in large numbers in software engineering.Note: you should expect to get guidance on the job search, but realize that you will not be at the bootcamp for most of your job search, and will need to stay motivated / focused enough to find a job.

I would say Hack Reactors special sauce has two key ingredients: the material and the people.--The material--To call HR a school would not do it justice. Schools are static environments, where the class that youre in and the material youre studying havent changed in years. Consistency across cohorts is prioritized, even if the product becomes outdated.HR classes are different. Each sprint (~every 2 days) is followed up by a reflection with a goal of constant improvement. Was the lecture given in an effective manner? Were the problem sets focused and easy to understand? Is this specific topic even still relevant? Student feedback is immediately integrated, to the point that weve changed actual presentation slides in the middle of a feedback session. The material that my class covered, Angular, Node, Express, MongoDB, Backbone, D3, and SQL just to name a few, is different than what pervious classes had learned and will be different from what future classes are taught. This is done to ensure that students receive the most relevant material - the types of stuff employers are looking for **today**.--The people--Hack Reactor does so many things right here. The teachers were all engineers first, coming from premier tech companies like Twitter, Google, and Adobe. But they came to HR because they love teaching - they legitimately get excited during lectures and sit for hours after class discussing both the functional and theoretical concepts of programming. But theyre not the only ones here to help you on your journey. There are folks that develop strong relationships with tech companies in the area. There are others who work with you one-on-one to craft an exceptional resume and prep you for technical interviews. And there are countless alumni that come back to give back to the school to give sage advice or join you for a beer. That being said, by far the most important people here are the other students. Before HR, people in my cohort were financial planners, systems architects, teaching English in another country, and running their own startups. Each of them comes with their own unique experiences, but with a common goal of being a badass software engineer. They get here early to share coffee and a bagel and stay late into the night working on nQueens. They keep you going when the program gets tough and they truly are life-long friends. It simply amazing that this many intelligent, driven, and dedicated people all under one roof.Hack Reactor was definitely one of the most challenging experiences of my life, but its come with an unmeasurable amount of knowledge and fulfillment. Its just plain awesome.
