I had a great experience in a Java Script Crash Course through First Step Coding. Its perfect for the aspiring coder. They are very attentive to the needs of their students and they gave great feedback throughout the course. I would certainly recommend this program to anyone interested in coding, with or without coding experience.

Fun course with lots of teacher attention and classmate collaboration! The course was really great. I wanted to see if coding would be a good fit for me. The course content included demonstrations followed by practice, which made it easier to internalize the content. Plus there were office hours during the course and open access to teachers even after the course was over. The teacher was supportive, easy to follow, and really funny too. And they offered office hours outside of class time. It was a really good introduction to coding. I’m so glad I took the course.

Awesome collaborative coding course! My experience with First Step Coding was exactly what I was looking for. I took the online class that was offered twice a week during the evening, which was perfect for me since I work full time. The virtual classes ran very smoothly via video conferencing, allowing me to ask questions and work directly with the teacher and the other students. I especially loved the collaborative aspect of coding with a partner during class and on assignments. The curriculum was the perfect speed for someone who is serious about learning to code but might have little experience. Everyone I worked with was extremely positive, responsive, and helpful. I finished the class with a good foundation and excellent resources to continue my education. They also offer mock interviews to prepare you for bootcamp applications. Overall it was a great experience and I would highly recommend it.

Brilliant programmer, excellent teacher and a great guy.Andy genuinely enjoys helping others gain a better understanding of programming. His teaching style is to challenge you with encouraging questions, which I found to be very effective in learning to apply new concepts. I’ve been able to use the skills I learned from working with Andy to get two paying contracts. On top of all this, he’s a lot of fun to be around. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

I normally dont take the time to write a review but I feel like I should because First Step Coding was awesome! The instructor obviously knows his stuff but he dumbed it down well enough so we can understand being that some of us had no experience with any programming language. The TA was also but pretty cool and would jump in to help when needed. If you are on the fence dont be, take the leap the class is definitely worth it!

While vacationing in Tahoe I was given the opportunity to attend the class JavaScript Building Blocks Crash Course at cowork Tahoe taught by First Step Coding. This was a 2-hour introductory class that was interesting and challenging. Almost as soon as the class started we were challenged with our first coding challenge and this pattern repeated throughout the class. I enjoyed getting right into it and sense that all students would appreciate this no nonsense approach.Andy, Kurt and Calli were all present for this introductory class and I liked all three of them. I was impressed by the way they easily turned the podium over to one another without any break in the flow. Im excited to continue learning over the next few weeks.

I had always wanted to code, but I knew next to nothing about programming languages, problem-solving, etc. After starting with a few free resources, I looked into finding reputable and structured programs that could help me to the next level. First Step Coding provided me with the opportunity to participate in some live, online classes with helpful teachers and other students also interested in starting their journeys as coders. I felt like the classes were simple to follow and the materials, homework, and projects gave me the knowledge and experience I needed to establish a foothold in programming while guiding me toward my second step. What I learned in First Step Coding not only in terms of languages, but also problem-solving methodology has already helped me to feel empowered and successful in the initial stages of the boot camp I started in the past few weeks. I think what First Step Coding offers is great for people looking to gain skills in web development and further their education for the purposes of enhancing their current career or future career opportunities as well as for their own satisfaction.

For years I attempted to learn core coding concepts but failed to combine these concepts into the tangible skills necessary to actually work on front-end coding projects. First Step Codings Bootcamp Prep course finally did the trick for me. I came to the course with no front-end coding experience; by the time I completed the course I had the tools and confidence to be a knowledgeable partner to the front-end engineers at work and even tackle some projects all on my own. The courses pacing and structure was exactly what I was looking for, combining the best elements of a modern, remote classroom (recorded content, web-based lessons) with the collaborative benefits of having live classmates and a knowledgeable instructor to work through problems in real time. Ultimately I believe what made the difference for me was First Step Codings pragmatic approach to the curriculum. The focus wasnt just on an individual technology (HTML, JavaScript, or CSS). Instead, the curriculum brought all of those technologies together and highlighted essential supporting skills such as debugging, learning how to learn new technologies, good code structure/hygiene, reading technical documentation, and more. I walked away from the course feeling like I understood how to think like an engineer and feeling like I finally *got* how web products are actually built. With the foundation provided by this course I was able to refresh and add some really cool functionality to my companys help site all on my own when I couldnt get the engineering team to divert resources to the task. I cant recommend this course enough to both aspiring front-end engineers as well as folks like me who just want to acquire enough raw front-end skills to be dangerous. In either case, this course is the best first step Ive encountered for taking control of your own journey towards technical self-sufficiency.

If youre someone like me who was code-curious, but unsure of committing 10K+ to a bootcamp that you may be unprepared for, then FSC is what youre looking for. The curriculum is appropriately paced for complete beginners, however, they will give you enough to chew on to decide if this is potentially a career field for you. Youll start from scratch with Javascript learning basic data types and by the end youll have a sense of how complex algorithms are constructed, even if you cant yet build them yourself. First Step Coding will give you a sense of clarity. Either you decide that while interesting, this isnt the career for you, or youre hungry for more and possibly developing obsessive interest. Both cases are great because now youll definitively know if you want to dedicate a significant portion of your life to this undertaking. The staff is wonderful and incredibly supportive. My instructor was Anna-Brit and she was unendingly patient, kind, and helpful. In or out of class, there was never a question I had that would not get addressed. Even Andy, the founder of the company, was open and available to students -- something that I would have to imagine is a bit of a rarity at other programs. They understand that during this phase of your education you need to have a bit of hand-holding, and while the goal is to get you walking on your own, theyre always there for the inevitable stumbles. In short, if youre curious about programming, but have little to no experience, then this is exactly the place where you need to be. Good luck!

Programming became interesting to me because I work directly with our developer and really enjoyed learning a bit more from him on how the dev was working, namely HTML and CSS. As I asked more questions he recommended that I look around for classes. That’s how I came across FSC and thought it was the perfect fit. Choosing a class came down to three main things; One; cost, two; commitment, and three; accessibility. I wanted to join a class that allowed me to “get my feet wet” so to speak. Enough to know if I really would like pursuing further, but not a 100% commitment like other bootcamps. Overall, I gained so much from this course in such a small ammonite of time. Jake, our professor, and Zach, our TA were both extremely helpful and fun to learn from. They made themselves available often and it was easy to get help. If you’re considering, definitely do it! You’ll have a much better understanding of JavaScript, HTML, and CSS and understand better if this direction is the right one for you.

FSC has been a really amazing experience!Andy and Micheal are extremely responsive and incredibly supportive. They will often go outside of the box to understand what Im struggling with and try their best to accommodate me. In fact, I scheduled a number of (weekend) Skype office hours with the both of them. Both of them are incredibly knowledgeable.I took programming courses before but I feel like I learn more in Andys class (which is only one month) compared to several semesters of computer science courses. One of the key takeaways from FSC is that I learned how to pair program (which Ive never done before). I think its a good skill to have as programmers need to know how to explain their codes and moreover their think process of how they went from point A to point B.

Ive always tinkered and tried to teach myself how to code and when I saw Bootcamps springing up across SF I thought Id see what all the hubbub was all about. Oh I see, I need to know a bunch of stuff first, sure. I eventually ran into roadblocks while learning ruby on my own and that goal was eventually shelved. Fast forward an entire year and I stumble across FSC. Can this Andy fellow really deliver a Get into any Bootcamp you want. experience? Short answer, Yes! Three hours in the evening twice a week with a 1x3 instructor ratio certainly was the perfect formula. Super friendly, super great, and plenty of after-hours in-person and online support.First Step Coding is not paid by any Bootcamps, they believe that money should go directly to their students but they do have partners that offer discounts to FSC alumni. That is to say that the cost of taking this class was reimbursed two-fold when I was accepted to my Bootcamp of choice. Essentially I was paid to take this class. You know when you experience something that changes your life forever? That one thing that youve always needed to alter your entire life direction? Thats what this class was to me and it could be for whoever is reading this.
