We did a try out at this club. It had a space big enough for a maximum of 10 kids, but had about 25 kids in the class. My son was really excited about joining the class but got kicked in the face within about five minutes. He was basically kicked because there was too many kids in a very small space. It was nothing to do with learning Juijitsu. He cried (he is 6 and rarely cries or makes a fuss when hurt, so I am guessing it must have been bad) and the ‘sensei’ basically said ‘it happens’. Later he said ‘don’t cry kids’ I understand it is a martial arts sport and kids will get hurt or bruised while learning. But this wasn’t due to learning. It was due to too many kids in a small area. It happened during an exercise done individually. Doing an exercise not really supervised enough. Apart from being kicked in the face he was helped maybe twice in an hour. For 150 dollars a month I expect at least a little training. And the age range was too big. He had kids from ages 4 to 9. He spent most of the time teaching the 4 year old kids as they needed more help. This was my first time to do this kind of thing. My son has had loads of different kinds of lessons, gymnastics, swimming, soccer, skateboarding etc but has never experienced such a lack of care or such a large class for the price. We only had the trial class but my son was crying after the class begging me not to make him go back.

Great place to train! Renan is a fantastic instructor and the vibe of the school is very encouraging. Picked up a lot of great tips from the higher belts as well.

The Sunset District is fortunate to have a jiu jitsu teacher as skilled as Renan Silva. Renans jiu jitsu background and credentials are awesome (Ralph Gracie Black Belt) and hes a really friendly and dedicated instructor. Ive had Renan as a teacher for close to 11 years and so glad his gym has opened near Ocean Beach and where I live. The environment and vibe is very welcoming for both beginners and visitors and the level of training is strong. The gym itself is really nice- clean, great space, and plenty of parking in the neighborhood. This is a very welcome addition to the local jiu jitsu community.

Sunset Jiu Jitsu is an awesome place to train. The place is immaculate. Renan is a an extremely intelligent, clear and attentive no bs instructor. He keeps the class moving. Higher belts will find expert instruction and tough training partners. Lower belts will get a solid foundation and will quickly get into shape, gaining skill and self confidence. A welcoming environment for all. Give it a try. The first class is free.

Very grateful to have been part of this community created by Norm and Renan for almost 2 years now. Jiu-Jitsu can get pretty addictive and training with skilled and respectful partners is a must. Renan runs most classes, teaching detailed and efficient techniques daily always with positive vibe and energy !My 3 kids (11, 9 and 6) have been training as well, and not only did their JiuJitsu and fitness level improved a lot, they also made awesome friendship through Sunset JiuJitsu. Renan got them and their teammates ready for their first tournaments this year, boosting all of their confidence in the most amazing way.

Very nice and clean place. A lot of different level and age practitioners, so anyone can have someone of similar level to train/roll with. Instructor, Renan, is very knowledgeable and easy going black belt, who promotes a very positive atmosphere on the mat. Pricing is very reasonable as well. Highly recommended place to start this great art of jiu-jitsu, or anyone who already practice it, came check it out.

Renan is the man. His knowledge comes from a deep lineage of traditional Brazilian Jiu jitsu. Only go here if you want to learn techniques that will work.
