I just completed Code Fellows after right around a half year. The experience was stunning! Im a Veteran and when I understood that the GI bill would cover the educational cost I was sold. Im 41yo and in a lifelong change and interestingly, in quite a while, I believe I at long last have an ability I can use for the remainder of my life. The degree of guidance and backing Code Fellows offers is un-coordinated in anything I have seen previously. The educators, TAs and Students are among the absolute most comprehensive individuals I have been near. I have been in class with everybody from Helicopter Pilots to Hairdressers and everybody has been extraordinary! Following a half year I have made deep rooted companions and anticipate the following section.

I just finished Code Fellows after almost 6 months. The experience was amazing! I am a Veteran and once I realized that the GI bill would cover the tuition I was sold. I am 41yo and in the middle of a career change and for the first time, in a long time, I feel I finally have a skill I can use for the rest of my life. The level of instruction and support Code Fellows offers is un-matched in anything I have seen before. The instructors, TA’s and Students are amongst some of the most inclusive people I have been around. I have been in class with everyone from Helicopter Pilots to Hairdressers and everyone has been great! After 6 months I have made lifelong friends and look forward to the next chapter.

I recently completed the Code 201 course with JB as my instructor and I had a really good experience. Make no mistake about it, the course is demanding and takes a lot of time. I would consider it more demanding than a full-time job. Stacked learning is challenging and takes some getting used to.With all that said, Im so glad Ive embarked on this journey and am continuing onto Code 301. I did a lot of research and ultimately settled on Code Fellows because they have graduates everywhere in tech and thats a good thing.

Code Fellows is not just another coding boot-camp, it is a coding academy. In the 5ish months I have been studying with them I have learned how to code like a professional and I have learned the skills required to land a job in the modern tech industry. They have some of the best instructors I have ever worked with. They are professional and thoughtful. Also, in the modern world of tech things change too rapidly for traditional schools to keep up. Code Fellows works hard to ensure that the knowledge they teach is up-to-date with current industry standards. I highly recommend this academy.

If you are considering the Code Fellows program, I encourage you to apply. Through the six month program, I learned more valuable material than I did in a four year college. For people new to the tech world like myself, getting through the course was not an easy task. The program was a grueling process, filled with sleepless nights and frustration, but the light at the end of the tunnel is well worth it. My understanding and progression of software development was exponential and I am eager to keep learning more. When the lecture was over, we went straight into the lab work where TAs and instructors will assist you with any assignments you are having trouble with or questions you had. It didnt matter if the question was easy or hard to answer, the Code Fellows instructional staff stood by you till you had a better understanding of the topic. Code Fellows not only teaches you about software development, but also the requirements needed to land that job position. During their career coaching sessions, you will be updating your resume to the level of their requirements, connecting you with developers from various companies and preparing you for any situation during a tech interview. Even after graduating from the program, Code Fellows has a career accelerated option where they support you and connect you to multiple tech companies to help guide through the struggles of finding the job. The only thing that would have made the experience better is if we could have gone into the Code Fellows campus. Though given the current COVID pandemic situation and everything needing to be remote, Code Fellows handled the situation very well with daily zoom lectures and provided a virtual compass where we worked on lab assignments. If I had the money and time to take another Code Fellows course, I would take it.

In a day and age where everyone is offering services to teach you how to code and how to get a job in the Tech industry, many prospective students are wary. But let me tell you that at Code Fellows, they work to prepare you for the actual environment you will be put in in the tech industry. I came here without knowing anything about code and I left being able to write full stack applications in a variety of frameworks and languages, customized to what employers are actually looking to hire.As a student who also dealt with a transition to remote learning, the choices made by code fellows to encourage a campus and collaborative, even in a remote environment, has been impressive. The online campus always have student and staff around working on various things and you can always see someone you recognize from another class. This has been a great experience and I highly value my time here. I’m enrolled currently for the next 201 after doing 102. The school can get intense but if it’s what you love and you want to commit to it then you’ll do alright. I did have prior knowledge in code (specifically CSS and HTML) from old myspace when i wanted to code my profile myself. Other than that I have no prior knowledge or education but I feel it did allow me to have an upper hand in class. I would imagine someone new would struggle a bit but again if you have a drive for your future I think this program is worth it.Networking/Community — one of the things I’m finding out is how they help you network because you’re around engineers/devs who you might want to work with or work for or even have a connection to the company you want to work for. The community is so supportive and open to do whatever it takes to make you succeed.

Attending Code Fellows was a game-changer for my career. There are lots of technical training resources out there, but the staff at Code Fellows understands where the rubber meets the road.By that, I mean both:1) How to meet students, new or seasoned, where theyre at in their learning and technical ability; and2) Understanding the quickly changing opportunities and needs of the technical industry. My experience at Code Fellows set me up to be job-ready and able to jump into a major tech company with some skills that were both needed, and that my more experienced colleagues had not yet learned, allowing start offering value straight-away as I gradually got up to speed with the specifics of my new job. There is a requirement to do some independent (online) learning in order to be admitted to a non-intro Code Fellows course... so there is some natural filtering before classes begin. The actual course-time always seemed well-spent... offering a very high level of challenge, fast pace, and individualized support. Much of the work is collaborative -- another aspect that was very well-suited in preparing me for the jobs I transitioned to.I cant sing my praises loud enough -- Code Fellows was a FANTASTIC experience that changed my life, transitioned me into a new career (after completing graduate school and working for 8.5 years in a completely different industry), and lead me into a new network of friends and colleagues.

I attended an info session and learned that this is a real technologist institute, with a large, dedicated instructional team. The leaders of this organization are well connected at the Big Four and they have a profound understanding of what theyre looking for in candidates these days. The game has changed and CodeFellows is leading the charge... in March 2020 I did not know what a boolean was. By August 14th, I was on a team presenting presenting our first collaboration on a Full-Stack Application built with React, MongoDB, Socket.io, and many other exciting, contemporary technologies. If youre brave and willing, these folks will take good care of you and help you discover, then channel your inner software engineer. After youve learned the skills, its not over! Theyll almost hold your hand and teach you how to secure gainful employment in your software area of interest, through every step of the process.Ive done my research and I have not yet encountered a coding school that does it all. Theyre even pandemic-proof! The level of support and aiding technologies available to students did not diminish catastrophically when COVID-19 hit. These folks pulled it together and were able to continue the same great curriculum and tutoring with few limitations... other schools nearly went out of business!Got some solid experience and serious work ethic, but feel obsolete? Something I love about Code Fellows is how I dont have to explain to people in tech what it is. I thoroughly enjoyed my time as a student - you get out what you put in, and the teaching staff was wonderful - but I really like that there are so many CF grads in various roles across the industry. One less barrier to entry. My first job out of CF was at Microsoft, and my teammate also went to CF. Neither of us had programming backgrounds before CF. These stories pop up more and more, too.One last thing: learning options. I went through the evenings/weekends JavaScript path, which took a total of 36 part-time weeks. This allowed me to work full time and handle whatever other responsibilities I had while also shifting my professional life in a new direction. Not many places offer flexibility like this. Its possible to not have to drop everything and make a change, which I found very helpful (plus the extra work time helped topics sink in).If youre interested in a code school, you cant not consider Code Fellows as an option. I began Code Fellows in June of 2016 and graduated from the Full Stack JavaScript course in November. With a background in nursing and no prior programming experience, the curriculum was challenging and demanding.Although its a fast paced learning environment that comes with a number of challenges, the content, course structure, instructors, and staff really enable students to be their full potential. What has made CF such a great experience for me has been the significant emphasis on community that they have as an organization. Since day one, instructors and staff have been approachable and have shown a genuine interest in encouraging and helping students to be the best that they can be. They also take student feedback seriously and work hard to make improvements and meet needs accordingly. After graduating CF, I started working as a TA for the following 401 JavaScript cohort. During my work experience, the emphasis on community and inclusivity has been the same that I experienced as a student.I feel like my feedback is valuable and that the staff/instructors work collaboratively to ensure that students are getting the best curriculum and learning experience that we can provide.Code Fellows is an awesome organization to be apart of.

Successfully got a Software Developer job, 5 months at Code Fellows + 5 months studying and applying = 10 months total.I attended CodeFellows from October 2018 thru March 2019 (5 months), and then spent the following 5 months building my portfolio website, learning in the areas I felt weak in, and looking for a job. In reality I wanted to have a portfolio I was somewhat happy with before applying so I wasnt really applying for the whole 5 months. At CodeFellows there are 3 levels, which is nice, because they only bill you at the start of each level (as opposed to the whole lump sum up front), the first 2 levels (201 and 301) are 100% focused on Javascript (no other languages). The 3rd and final level (401) lets you pick which language you want to specialize in (when I attended in 2018/19 the options were: JavaScript, Java, Python, and C#). The last course is the longest and most expensive. I did the JavaScript course, which I would fully recommend. I (personal opinion here) think that JavaScript and the JavaScript curriculum is the most relevant for finding a job for a junior developer. I didnt take the other courses and I dont hire developers so I cant say for sure.In the JavaScript track you learn a ton of good stuff. And in my job I have used much of it extensively and repeatedly, and often. It was actually kind-of surprising to me how similar to the project weeks the actual job was (Code Fellows project weeks are intense 4-day team projects, where you often have to learn and apply stuff youve never done). My formal job duties are as a front-end software developer, which is why I feel the React portion of the course is most applicable and marketable. In addition, due to the nature of the JavaScript full stack curriculum, I also feel empowered to tackle backend problems. There is a lot of time spent covering things like APIs and in my job Ive run across both C# and Java APIs and feel right at home.I do feel the curriculum was really relevant. This is something that my brother (a pro dev of ~10 years) helped me look at when deciding whether to do a bootcamp, and which bootcamp to do. As part of the vetting process I also met the people, who at CodeFellows are all very nice and supportive --- they do meet-and-greets for prospective students where you can meet current students, alumni, and staff to get a better idea of whether you want to attend and get recommendations -- pretty useful. Its not all roses. Going through CodeFellows is not guaranteed to land you a job - your hard work and persistence is what you will need to rely on for that. The program is pretty hard... no single concept is really difficult if enough time is spent on it, but there are new concepts introduced almost every day, and I didnt feel like I had time to master every concept. Do this for 5 months straight and it does take some mental fortitude to get through it.One thing that I think had some room for improvement was the job support. The people who were there and helped me did a great job, but as an institution, the process could have, I think, been a little better. It could be different now.... when I had just finished the program there had been some staff changes in the job support program. Im also not sure what they could have done differently though - I just know it could have been better - possibly better integration with local businesses? i.e. more practice (but not really practice) interviews with local companies (I did get to do a mock interview with Microsoft). Maybe setting up informational interviews? tours? On-site job fairs?

This bootcamp promises a lot but doesnt deliver. Notice how there are no former students commenting that they got jobs. I actually only read 1 comment here that was an actual student, the rest either work there or attended an orientation.I was in the Front End Dev course and most of us didnt get jobs. Neither did the previous grads who took our same class and students in the other classes. Shortly after we graduated the CEO told everyone they were no longer offering guaranteed refunds if you didnt get a job offer within 9 months. HmmmmWhen interviewing with companies(most didnt respond to resumes, so the few that did), were not impressed with code fellows, it meant nothing to them. The main point of going to a coding bootcamp is to get a job. Well turns out their Get a coding job by completing our course, is very untrue for the majority of the students(their website posts false statistics on the number of grads). What does happen is you pay them at least 12k (if you test into the highest course and start there right away, like I did) for about 3 months of learning and afterwards go to a real college, where employers then take where you went to school seriously. For me and most of the students here, it has been a colossal waste of money and time. Seems more like a scam to me.

I went to their orientation, hoping I could take a course in a particular language I want to augment. Its a ubiquitous language that assist in programming the biggest ecommerce platform in the world, so you would think it could be part of their curriculum, certainly as much as Python. Javascript, of course, made sense to me that they were teaching that, although they alluded that Node.js came first in the general courses.OK?I was told they graduate people in iOS, javascript, and Python only. They said this was because these stacks were the best ones in which to get hired.. They also said a lot of their instructors were former students which kind of reminded me of MLM. They claim a 90% six-months after graduation placement rate. While I was there, a guy who was friends with someone else who graduated came in, and it turned out his friend was not working yet. They were moving out of the center of Amazonia, which was giving them great advertising, but maybe it wasnt appreciated by the powers that be. Their new office is still downtown, but much less cool.My biggest issue was that the structure. The 101 level is $99 for the day(since this is an intro day only, set up MAYBE to scare off newbies, you would think it could be less). Still, not much for instruction, unless you find out it was utterly pointless and are desperate. After that, however, 201 is $3500, and 301 is $4500,but you dont start an actual specialized track until the 401 level, which is $12000.Youre basically paying $8000 for some sort of fundamentals which are supposed to prep you for jscript and/or iOS. Seems to me 8k could get you some pretty good tutoring to five straight into either jscript or IOS, or you could go into a community college program, or grind your way through an online course for much less. Its not that 20k is too much to pay if you actually end up programming jscript or iOS, but I had an issue with paying that 8k upfront just to ramp up, although they claim you can test past these levels. Again, this didnt make sense either. What do they test you on? CSS?They claim to have a great success rate, and the vibe seemed professional, especially their claims to prep students for interviews, as well as networking, but how do you know that until you see it coming out the other end? Lot of money, and the orienteer made it clear they were for profit, and this was why they needed to protect their reputation. They also said it was really hard to place at Amazon, and mentioned the same three companies over and over, and none of them were the majors, minus one big travel company. Go to the orientation and see for yourself, but there are no shortcuts. Still, maybe its possible these guys can get you your moneys worth. As I said, forking over 8k without knowing what track Im on was a real issue for me.

So for a baseline here, I have not attended this school, nor have I spoken to anyone from it. Which is exactly why I am leaving this review. I had some questions about their programs, the main one being despite their large advertisements for job placement or your money back, and the high starting salaries and all those great selling points, what they dont mention is that these are for the Development accelerator classes, not for the boot camps. From what Ive found the bootcamps offer no guarantees for employment, increases in salary, or any other benefits. Now what makes this difficult, and the reason at this point Im rating them 3 stars, is because its impossible to find google search results for what you get out of their BOOT CAMP program, because every other agency in the nation refers to their main training program as a boot camp. so if you google code fellows boot camp employment opportunities or something similar, itll bring up their main stats, cleverly, but thats not the stats for the actual boot camp.Theyve done something no other group has done, and changed the common-name of their main program. So when you attend a Code Fellows boot camp, you are not attending the same boot camp as any other school in the country, nor are you receiving the same level of training, and that makes it nearly impossible to research. Now why would a business want to cover up the information so cleverly if they are legitimate? So I called them. 2pm on 5/4/2015 I called them, no answer despite it being a business day during business hours. Maybe they were busy? So I called the Portland office. Its a cell phone number I believe, judging by the area code, which is also a bit suspicious, but did not recieve an answer there either. And as a prior note, I had sent an inquiry via their email on 5/1/2015 with these questions that as of today, 5/10/2015 has still not been replied to.After not receiving a response on the first two calls/voicemails and the email, I attempted to contact them again, this time a bit more warily, because what kind of legitimate business, that expects you to pay upwards of 10,000, doesnt answer their phone during business hours? On 5/8/2015, one week after my initial contact, I called again and again both phones just went to voicemail. I left messages again, and we will see if they bother responding. But this does not speak well for a company. If you want people to invest in you, you have to show some level of reliability. you would expect the same from us as students, but if you cannot be depended on to even answer your phone, it doesnt matter how great your program reviews are, no one except for those who dont care to do their homework will attend your school. In my experience, a business that does not value its customers, is not someone I want to do business with or trust my future in. You can all make your own opinions, as obviously mine has nothing to do with the quality of the education provided but rather entirely to do with the quality of the institution, but I would definitely be careful with this one until you/I know more. I think I can update this review later, or perhaps write another one after I have reached the school and feel more confidence in them, but at this point, this is my review.Edit: 5/11/2015 The school did contact me today, and made it very clear that while the job placement guarantees and salaries and all that were related to the development accelerators, it is not impossible with a few months practice inbetween a bootcamp and the next Dev Accelerator, and if you are a sharp person who either has prior experience or the drive to REALLY learn, you can get into the next class. They typically appear to know who will be cut out for it by the end of the bootcamp, so youd better shine during that time. They also made it seem somewhat less risky just taking a bootcamp, that while it does not make you software developer ready, it does make you intern ready, and interns get paid. if you want a foot in the door people, the question has been answered, the bootcamp will do it
