Sensei Steve gives well-rounded instruction of the Uechi form, from kata to basic, intermediate, and advanced self-defense. Over more than fifteen years of training with Steve, the emphasis has always been on imparting practical knowledge of Karate basics in a calm, measured way. A good choice for all levels.

Mr. Vosa is a wonderful teacher. You can tell that he teaches out of a great caring and devotion to the art of Uechi Ryu. I have studies several martial arts and have a black belt in another type of karate and although I’ve had many great teachers over the years, I have never had one that is better than Mr. Vosa. I whole heartedly recommend studying with Mr. Vosa. Not only is the atmosphere friendly and conducive to learning, but the quality of instruction is top notch and the student fees are very reasonable without requiring a contract or other long term commitments.

Honestly couldnt ask for better training or instructor. If you are looking for a traditional martial art that has real world (read not sport) applications this is the place place you.The dojo is awesome with a wood floor and matted areas. It also has a hanging and stand up bag for technique work when you are not training kata or Kumite.Uechi-Ryu is an amazing system, simple on the surface but vastly complex in its application. Unlike some other system where one technique is used for one application, Uechi-Ryu uses one technique for multiple applications. It will feel awkward at first, but if you stick with it it becomes second nature. The Instructor, Mr Vosa, has been training for longer than Ive been alive. Not only is he a wealth of information in the system and real world application. He has the skills to back it up, Hes the best martial arts instructor Ive ever trained with The class sizes small, which allows for alot of one on one instructions.I highly recommend checking out New Mexico Uechi-ryu Karate Do,

Ive been training here for almost 3 years now. I wouldnt have stayed so long if it wasnt such a great experience over all.The dojo itself is fantastic. Its very spacious with a large matted area and a wood floor. Multiple dressing rooms and multiple bathrooms. Hanging bag, standing training dummy and all the proper equipment to go along with the style. The teacher is really top notch. I could go on about how grateful I am to have found someone like this to learn Uechi from in Albuquerque. He has a care and appreciation for the style and for sharing his passion and expertise that I wish I had seen in more of my martial arts teachers. The other black belt students there have also been great. Friendly and helpful. There is no competitive macho nonsense going on with them. Just feelings of comradery. The small class size is also really conducive to learning. The amount of 1 on 1 attention has helped me a lot. So has the opportunity to attend 3 classes a week and I truly love the style. It feels very unique compared with other styles I have studied. Unlike those other styles I feel like this one has really improved my overall posture, my body strength and my reflexes. Its been the best martial arts experience of my life to date.

If you are looking to learn a traditional martial art in Albuquerque, this is the place. Sensei Vosa has studied Uechi Ryu for approximately forty years. Its rare when you find a teacher with not only an in-depth understanding of the subject matter, but one who can also articulate the finer nuances. That is, not only how to perform the movement, but why you are doing it. Real world applications are stressed throughout the training. The curriculum covers every aspect of the art from: kata, bunkai, sparring, two and sometimes multiple person drills, conditioning, and most importantly, the health benefits. This school can take one from beginner to as far as one wants to take it.The dojo is clean, spacious, and a comfortable training environment. It offers a matted area along with a wooden floor training area. Training aids (heavy bag, padded clubs, bokken, etc.) are readily available. What I like about the dojo is that everyone is well controlled and calm. Also, no one is forced to perform anything they do not feel comfortable doing. Sensei Vosas primary focus is safety. He truly cares about the well being of his students.Simply put, a great place to train! Very highly recommended.
