My two boys have been at Sun Soo for a little over a year and their growth has been tremendous. Watching them do their practice and seeing how Master Morris and the other instructors and teen instructors interact and help the students are what made me also start my practice just a couple of months ago. They believe in a student going at their own pace instead of being handed out their next belt rank, which I believe is incredibly important so that they adequately know the material. I couldnt be more grateful for all of the kindness and help from Sun Soo and cant wait to keep on my own taekwondo journey.

I have been taking my nephew to Sun Soo for the last 6 months. He just tested for his yellow belt and he absolutely loves it here.Master Morris and all instructors take time with each student no matter the age to coach them and develop them not only in martial arts but also in being better person in life.I looked into other martial arts schools for my nephew who is 6 years old and I am so glad I chose Sun Soo. The turn around in 6 months with attitude, manners, and taking personal responsibility is amazing to see from a 6 year old.

I can only say positive things about SunSoo Martial Arts. Master Morris and his staff offer a welcoming, inclusive, structured, and FUN environment at their school. While I am new to martial arts, I am a skilled and veteran educator. As an elementary teacher of 16 years, I can appreciate the strategies and approach that he takes to help our youngest learners grasp and retain not only the lifelong lessons and skills about being a good person but also an appreciation of physical fitness. In addition, my eight-year-old son is developing not just martial arts skills, but discipline, the appreciation of a goal, and social skills/manners that he will need and use throughout his entire life. We tell everyone we know about the amazing things happening with our son and the other students at Master Morris school. Master Morris meets with families to explain his philosophy and passion for his school. It is not a sales pitch, rather an overview of himself as a person and all that SunSoo can offer you. If you are on the fence, do it, call today, and set up a meet and greet. You wont regret it.

My daughter started attending the after school program when she was 4 years old, after we had a so-so experience with other after school programs, honestly the martial Arts program was just a bonus for us.The immediate impression I got is that EVERY single staff member and Instructor has sincere respect and awareness for the children and people they are teaching. As time has passed I am seeing how the Core Values taught at Sun Soo impact these kids. Ive watched the growth not just with my daughter but with other kids as well.Over the summer When the Pandemic affected our summer camp plans and work schedules, The staff at Sun Soo pivoted effectively to provide a safe, and conscious space for the kids to still be kids in their summer program. My daughter is entering her 3rd year at Sun Soo in their School Camp as well her Martial Arts program. I am in awe of her when I watch her, these past couple of months. Shes focused and poised while in class, but still her silly side with her classmates once theyre off the mat. Asheville Sun Soo will continue to be part of our daughters life, its a type of mentoring/ teaching/ practice that I wish every child could have.

At age 78, I found myself pursuing a Tae Kwon Do black belt at Asheville Sun Soo.Only months earlier, nothing would have seemed more improbable. I knew nothing about Tae Kwon Do.I had already lived a jam packed life. My dreams had come true. I had been married to the same wonderful trophy wife most of my life; had two wonderful children, engineer and physician, a beloved son-in-law, four beloved grandchildren; BS degree, University of Ga.; MD, Medical College of Ga.; internship, residency, Duke U.; Instructor, Duke, Asst. Professor, Medical U of SC; successful medical practice, retired at 53; studied music at UNC Asheville, San Francisco Conservatory; German; French; Latin; acupuncture; hypnosis; horseback riding; skiing; traveled: Europe, Asia, Africa, America; friends all over the world; endless adventures! Lots more. Major U.S. Army Medical Corps in Europe 3 years. I had been everywhere, seen everything, and done everything—or so I thought! But Sun Soo surprised me!I enrolled my grandson, at age 8, took him to classes several times a week.As I watched something remarkable happened.I realized that I was witnessing something profound, that I had not imagined! An ancient discipline, origins lost in prehistory, refined through centuries, connecting practical self-defense and profound spirituality to discipline, art, courtesy, integrity, respect and much more. The children were beautiful; the beauty radiated from within. The same was true of the adults. Everything was designed to encourage the truth, beauty, and love, that flourish in every human heart, to flow forth freely. This illuminated the place.Discipline was strict, kind, gentle, voluntary, self-imposed; everyone supportive; emphasis on openness of heart, mind, and spirit and caring about everyone; people of all kinds, backgrounds, ages, special needs, joint problems, blindness, all encouraged to progress, to strive for excellence. All this was disarming, an interesting paradox in a discipline based on combat. My grandson grew in self-confidence, self-esteem, and responsibility, develop his physical abilities. He glowed with delight performing the exercises. He loved what he was doing.I was drawn in like a magnet.I told Master Tony Morris of my interest. “However,” I said, “I don’t know if I can do this.” He replied: “Do what you can.”I realized that I was speaking with a remarkable man, a man of great depth and spiritual evolvement, that it was he who had created this remarkable place, his vision that had brought it all about—the demand for excellence, the openness, the eagerness to accept all possibilities, the wholesomeness, the discipline. It was his dream it was to bring others, and himself, to the best that they could be. Realizing that he had manifested this reality from glorious vision, I wondered what visions were yet to be fulfilled. He showed me a few basics, then spoke, with affection and respect, of the people then practicing. He knew them all. His interest in people and in helping them rise to their greatest potential was profound.I asked my grandson what he thought about my participating. He beamed! “Why would you think I wouldn’t want you to?” he asked.I signed up!I found myself immersed in this extraordinary atmosphere—practicing the ancient art and discipline with its powerful spiritual and emotional depth--exercising, losing weight, learning self-defense, getting to know everyone, advancing deeper into the spirituality. My awkwardness was received with patience, kindness, generosity, and understanding and the gentle pressure to exceed self-imposed limitations. Everyone encouraged me. Never have I known a more nurturing atmosphere. It all began to come together--all the experiences, the adventures. It all began to make sense. In this beautiful atmosphere, all that I had known reappeared in a fresh, gentle light of new understanding. My grandson progressed beautifully. His teachers raved about him. He developed in courtesy and athletic grace. He progressed steadily through the belt levels.I never felt better!

Cannot say enough good things about this school of martial arts. My son started 2 years ago (age 3) in the mighty tiger program. Master Dexter is beyond amazing with the younger children and we immediately saw a huge improvement in his overall attitude, using his manners and his with his confidence level. Through covid my son practiced virtually and graduated from the mighty program into the kids beginner. He now practices under Master Morris and Master Dickinson who are equally as wonderful instructors and he is still really enjoying it. He is excelling in school and the teachers say his manners are impeccable. My son had also attended the summer program and Master Sabahive is doing a great job with this. I have been practicing at Asheville Sun Soo for a year. My two youngest children invited me after they were about 6 months in. Now my oldest has started! SO far I have found my practice to benefit my overall life. I’m more physically engaged and in touch with my body than I’ve felt in 20 years. I find my practice and Sun Soo to be a grounding place in my life, helping me be more focused and productive, more intentional, patient and tolerant, and more disciplined and dedicated. Sun Soo offers us a well organized curriculum that sets up up for success with clear and attainable goals, a supportive community of peers working together toward skills mastery that earns a new belt rank. And then the process resets. There is an infinite cycle of humility, growth, and mastery. I’m seeing my children take great pride in their achievements and I see the values practiced on the mat transferring to their lives at home - they are more respectful, courteous, and confident. When they are out of line, we often bring them back to center with a remind to live their lives the TKD way! Many thanks to our excellent Sun Soo instructors, dedicated staff, and incredible group of peer practitioners.

I started my own practice here two years ago as a 40-year-old, after decades of wanting to learn a martial art, and years of watching Sun Soo grow and develop in Asheville. The moment I gave myself permission to go for it and begin was a pivot point in my life. While I love the physical nature of the practice - the fitness benefits are wide and large - it is the precise and focused instruction from the staff that has most directly affected my life. Learning how to kick well is cool, but learning how to live well is immeasurable. I have no doubt that each and every one of the staff, as well as my fellow practitioners, want the absolute best for me in all things. The intention, integrity and inspiration in the school is deep. Now, practicing with my wife and four kids as well, I am proud to give to and receive from this school and this practice.

Where to begin... I started attending Asheville Sun Soo back in August. I had originally gone in for my orientation almost a year and a half prior, but I let fear sway me out of following through (you know the whole starting something new and what if I look like an idiot? kind of fear). The itch to go never left, and I finally sucked up it up and joined this summer. I can honestly say that its been one of the best decisions Ive ever made for myself. The students and teachers have quickly earned a place in my heart. Not only is the school true to the discipline, but its also a community, a giant family, and not to mention a killer workout. All of the instructors are incredibly kind, knowledgeable, and so so skilled at meeting all students where theyre at. One of my most favorite things about Sun Soo is how the essence of community is embedded into their curriculum-- even though the school is large with many students (adults as old as 80 and kids as young as 3) you have the opportunity to get to know and connect with everyone. Even if youre a complete newbie, you are included as if youre a seasoned student. I could say so many things about the palpable integrity, discipline, and care that is Asheville Sun Soo, but Ill let you feel it for yourself, because you will the second you walk through the doors.

I have been practicing Taekwondo at Sun Soo with my two kids, 5 and 13 for over a year and it has been one of the best experiences! It is not easy to find activities that the whole family can be involved in and this practice has provided that and so much more. We started at Sun Soo shortly after moving to the area from Ohio and it provided some much needed community and stress release. It feels amazing to start or end the day with some punching, yelling and kicking. There is also a focus on personal discipline and being your best self on and off the mat that I love. I would recommend this practice to anyone and I am so grateful that I became involved. I honestly cant picture where I would be without it now.

Grand Master Tony Morris and Master Michael Dickinson have created a place martial artists can call home. Our family has been a part of Sun Soo for the past 7 years. We have watched our children develop into incredibly talented, mindful and skilled practitioners. While many studios are able to churn out great martial artists Sun Soo has created a sense of community. When Covid came to North Carolina many people felt lost as social interactions became limited . Despite closing Sun Soos physical doors, Master Morris and Dickinson kept our community together by adapting. They set up virtual classes to bring people together. These classes gave practitioners something to look forward to. As re-opening has occurred they have strived to keep Sun Soo a safe haven for martial artists. They offer an array of live, virtual and in person classes. The Dojang is cleaned religiously and all practitioners must wear masks and safety precautions are taken very seriously. The Sun Soo community continues to grow locally and nationally. As a martial artist and physician I am lucky to have a place that my family can call home. In addition to being able to get the sweat out. Sugu- hashi som nida

My interest in Sun Soo Tae Kwon Do began as a parent sitting in the lobby watching our son’s classes. We signed our son up several years ago after he attended a Sun Soo birthday party. The instructors seemed patient, enthusiastic and seemed to care about the character of their students as much as teaching them how to move their bodies as martial artists. That was very compelling for me as a parent. My son has been practicing for 2 years now and I’ve noticed a lot of changes. He’s more focused, he’s much more respectful, he seems to be more compassionate, more courteous to adults and to other kids, and he’s doing better in school behaviorally. He was always strong academically but since starting his practice here he seems more driven to bring his best to the classroom. Before my son started practicing, he also experienced some bullying. He would get very upset but he didn’t want to cry so he would just kind of shut down. About a year into his practice he started really standing up to anyone who would bully him, in a really courteous and strong way, and I was immensely proud of him for that. I don’t see him being a good target anymore for bullies which is incredibly relieving as a parent. My son and I started to bond right away as soon as I started practicing… he’s kind of been my teacher along the way, and that has been a load of fun. We started to really enjoy the community here and we have a lot of friends in common. It’s really fun to share that with him. He also been more helpful and more courteous, which makes parenting a little easier. My husband started practicing about 6 months ago. It has been great having three of us on the mat taking family classes together. It has been a healthy way for my husband and I to spend time and relieve work and life stress together. When I first started practicing, I really just wanted to get out of the lobby and onto the mat because it looked like fun. I also wanted to improve my fitness, try something new and find a healthy way of reducing stress. The reasons I practice now go a little deeper. I’m realizing that my practice has enhanced my cognitive focus and helped me feel more physically and emotionally empowered both on and off the mat. I really enjoy the sense of community that this place offers. It is warm, welcoming and incredibly supportive.I never imagined becoming a martial artist but I am so grateful to have found Sun Soo. What Asheville Sun Soo means to me is encouragement, compassion, and striving for personal excellence.- Tina Clark, age 45, Licensed Professional Counselor

This is an experience we had last fall... and in the months since I can say that we continue to have great experiences with SunSoo. Were grateful for this organization in our community! My husband and I arrived to your studio this morning with very a nervous Mighty Tiger and White/Yellow belt, who both decided upon arrival that they did not want to participate at all. I had to use your class breathing technique to calm myself so that we didnt walk out the door for home 10 min later (in general, Im not one to give up easily!). Once both S and G made eye contact with the familiar faces and smiles of their instructors/masters, they began to calm down and take in all the differences in the studio that initially felt scary and overwhelming. Aside from thinking we had committed to a 2 hour event only to arrive home 6.5 hours later; the day was an amazing gift for our family (well be better prepared next time- though the day was long, there was so much more that was absorbed than had we only been there for their portion of the tournament). We were all able to see all the ages and skill levels of the many participants showing their skill and trying their best. We are appreciative of the opportunity to be a part of Sun Soo and the energy and focus you have created. My children were both uplifted by their experiences- and what that gave to their confidence and development was beyond the medals they brought home- thank you for giving us that.G and I havent talked too much about her conversations with you the last two weeks- but tonight she looked at me and said, Im really glad I went to the tournament today. I was able to practice my one steps and I learned so much. Master Morris told me that I could just tell myself a different story and I tried that and it worked on my from and a little on my one steps. She almost did not sign up for the one steps but i insisted as a way to help her practice, and though i want to push my children to do what they can, i also want them to want to push themselves at a rate that is *almost* comfortable. She (we) sought help from a few students and instructors and made her own community of experiences outside of class- it was really nice to see the layers of student interactions appear alongside her confidence and skill. Afterward, Ive never seen her so excited to practice at home- she continued to do her steps (teaching me how to block) until bedtime.S was convinced he didnt want to break boards. He fractured his arm Monday night (its pretty bad and were hopeful he will not require surgery) and has been feeling low b/c of his new one-handed challenges. He said tonight, Im really happy i got to break boards. I almost didnt do it b/c i didnt want to be embarrassed. Again, my heart was full because of the support and encouragement everyone shows all the participants. Its infectious and creates an environment where everyone can rise to their ability if they choose to.We really appreciate you and the instructors, staff and volunteers. I am also grateful for your willingness to talk with G and to help her feel confident and to act in an intentional manner (eye contact and to answer questions), as well as to help her push herself with her practice, and in life.

I have wanted to practice martial arts at this school ever since I had the pleasure of working with the schools founder Tony Morris years ago in a professional aspect. I got my son started first, and then I was finally able to join him on the mat. My experiences at Sun Soo have exceeded my expectations and hopes for martial arts training. Not only do I get a great work-out every class, but I enjoy deep support, encouragement, and validation from the great community of people Master Morris and his wonderful staff have drawn to the school. My son and I look forward to many more years of fun and sweat at this great place.

My child and I are both students here, and it has been nothing but a positive experience for us. The environment is nurturing, yet disciplined and rigorous. There is tremendous support, from instructors and fellow students alike. If you are thinking about beginning the study of martial arts, then you owe it to yourself to at least come and see what it is all about!

If you want to become a great martial artist, get into shape without having to go to the gym or simply want to meet new people in a fun environment then this is the place for you. I practiced martial arts as a kid and then stopped for 25 years. Now that my kids are old enough, I wanted them to have the same experiences I did when I was younger. I checked out the other facilities in town and I chose Sun Soo because of the many classes available, also they have a family class for kids and adults. Great place with truly dedicated and caring instructors!!

Our daughter started here over a year ago. We wish we found it sooner. Her confidence is growing. It is a supportive environment. She talks to teachers and has begun speaking up for herself in all situations, not just at Tae Kwon Do. The families and other students here are all encouraging and kind. She is an athlete and the classes are demanding enough that she feels challenged.Thank you Master Morris

There’s a well-kept secret about Asheville Sun Soo Tae Kwon Do. Of course, the instructors are experienced, remarkable practitioners who are fully dedicated to providing the greatest possible Tae Kwon Do experience for their students. But the little-known secret about Asheville Sun Soo is that it’s not all about self-defense – it’s mostly about self-development. I’ve seen my sons, ages 6 and 8, transform into more focused, courteous and respectful young men. Their energy is being channeled in a fun, constructive way with care, compassion and a sense of community. Asheville Sun Soo Tae Kwan Do is molding the future leaders of our community, and I’m thrilled our family is a part of theirs.

My son started attending Asheville Sun Soo Tkd in 2011 when he was 4 yrs old and entered the Mighty Tigers program. I watched the instructors operate with a great mixture of group and one-on-one instruction. I noticed they were both friendly and firm with the kids and took interest in each one with a great mixture of instruction and fun. Since that time my son has earned his black belt, but more importantly, he has developed into a young man who is confident, has character, understands the value of hard work and how to take instruction. I believe that his practice and the instructors at Sun Soo have made a significant impact on his development and maturity. This is not just a Martial Arts School, this is a place for people of all ages to experience personal growth that will directly affect the quality of their relationships and life. The owners Tony Morris and Michael Dickinson, along with their team, have created a space for someone to come and grow as martial artist, but more importantly, develop as a person inside of a community of people with a shared purpose.

I have two sons who practice at Asheville Sun Soo Tae Kwon Do. They are 12 and 10 years old and theyve been practicing here for two years. I dont practice, but I love what theyre getting out of it. They both are learning great discipline; they are getting exercise, which I love. I know that they can stay here and they are learning from other adults besides me how to behave in the world, how to talk to people, and how to take care of themselves.

Big space, big classes, big costs. My 11 year old nephew spent three months here, and learned how to jump around and yell at the top of his lungs, didnt learn much of anything martial arts related other than how to bow and say sir. We wanted more. When he tested for his first belt and we saw the test requirements - we pulled him and found a school with a more realistic self defense curriculum.

Asheville Sun Soo is an amazing place to get both physically and mentally fit. The instructors are incredible and the school is a community of fabulous people. The mixed classes for kids and adults create a special atmosphere where you can be interacting with and learning from a 12 year old or a 70 year old and each interaction is rewarding.I would encourage everyone to come see a weekend belt testing. It is inspirational. In a world that can sometimes feel dark and confusing Sun Soo is a point of light and a magic place to nuture your growth and the growth of your children.

Sun Soo does a wonderful job not only training students in martial arts, but requiring students to focus on character inside the studio and across other life settings (home, work, school) in order to progress as a marital artist. The instructors adjust training, if needed, to target individual challenges in learning. Across classes the instructors are positive, encouraging, and kind while still maintaining excellent structure. Outstanding Program.-Dr. Rebecca Norton, Clinical Psycholoigist

They say it takes a village to raise a child and we are lucky enough to have the staff of Sun Soo included in our village. Our oldest daughter has been taking classes for 2 ½ years and started with their after school program this school year. She has ADHD and both the after school staff and Master Morris himself, have gone above and beyond to help our daughter reach her full potential in her taekwondo practice, school work and personal development. I never fail to be amazed at their approach with all of the kids – structured (but with room for individualization) and always loving. I cannot say enough positive things about Sun Soo, their staff or their methodology. My family will continue to bring our children here for years to come.

My two boys practice at Asheville Sun Soo and have been practicing here for over two years. There are many Tae Kwon Do schools to practice but Asheville Sun Soo is hands down the absolute best in WNC. The family atmosphere embodies the saying it takes a village to raise a child. There are so many parents that attend and practice with their children. It is a small community where everyone becomes a family member. The staff are awesome and have a team of instructors that are extremely knowledgeable and very detail oriented. They challenge their students to do their best and succeed each and every time. I have recommended Asheville Sun Soo to several friends and continue to recommend to anyone wishing to learn true self defense.

I thought doing martial arts in asheville, nc would be allot of sparing and too focused on the fighting aspect. What I found at Asheville Sun Soo TaeKwonDo is an amazing community of friendly people, and the best workout of my life. This is crossfit to the MAX! Tony Morris and his staff of instructors are top notch, and teach a very well rounded traditional form of Martial Arts that focus on form and conditioning as well as mechanics of sparring. The best part is the whole family is enjoying it! My little boy is 4, my little girl is 6 and my wife and I all love it! I cant say enough about what a great experience we are having here!
