My 4 year old daughter was nervous about starting a class like this. I told her to just try it and if she didn’t like it that, we could find something else. She has LOVED it from day one. The way the class is laid out, any small child could easily step in and start to participate. She has so much fun here and I can’t wait to see her progress in this class.

I am a newbie to Tai Chi. I was new to the Austin area and was graciously welcomed to the school. The instructors are absolutely amazing, the other students are really great as well. It is a comfortable, peaceful, zen-like space. I was nervous and worried I wouldnt be able to do it because of physical limitations but Instructor Durkin went above and beyond to show me that I can do it! I have really flourished since Ive been coming to Master Gohrings and I would definitely recommend it to anyone wanting to try martial arts in the Austin area!

Our two boys attend Master Gohring’s Lil Dragons. This has been such a good experience for them, challenging their stamina, working on maintaining focus, and listening. With a year of being at home due to COVID, Lil Dragons has been the perfect way to work on so many skills they missed out on in the last year. Master Gohring does a fantastic job keeping all of his Lil Dragons engaged. Our boys love going to Kung Fu every week.

This is a real Tai Chi and Kung Fu school for all ages, not a gym class. Kids can start as young as four and learn directly from the grandmaster himself. Its the BEST class EVER. Adults can choose either discipline and can advance in rank, earning colored sashes while learning all sorts of forms including working with weapons for advanced students.Come and try out a class. I’ve been taking Tai Chi classes at Master Gohring’s Tai Chi and Kung Fu school for two years. My daughter has been taking Kung Fu for a year.I highly recommend the school.I appreciate the variety of forms taught. Not only have I been learning Tai Chi, but a saber form, a flute (a small staff) form, a long staff form, and a sword form. You will learn the ten important points, and about the eight energies. And you will also learn the ten Nei Kung postures that help make your Tai Chi better. In three or four years, when you earn your black sash, and are tested on the Yang 108, the flute form, the sabre form, the eight energies and ten points, you will have earned your black sash. And I’m not even that good at any of the forms. But that’s another great thing about the school. The instructors are not running classes like a drill sergeant. They very much understand that every student learns in their own way, and at their own pace. They teach the classes with patience and good humor, and occasionally the bad pun.The students, too are supportive of each other. It’s a wonderfully supportive intentional community. It’s a wonderfully enriching environment in which to learn martial arts.

Ive been studying Tai Chi at Master Gohrings school for several years. The quality of instruction is consistently excellent. The classes are always interesting and fun. With the kind of solid fundamentals we get at Master Gohrings, the physical benefits over time are actually pretty amazing. At first, I found Tai Chi very accessible, even easy, then as it got more and more challenging, Ive been able to do more than I thought possible. Im never bored with it, never tired of it--its the perfect mind/body workout. I only wish Id started earlier!

Master Gohring’s Tai Chi and Kung Fu is a wonderful martial arts studio located in Central Austin. This is the first year of attendance for my twin boy and girl and so far they both love attending. The best part of this family owned, family-centered place is the fun-loving and high quality direction that Master Gohring and each of his instructors provide for all the kids. The instructors also serve as life role models for the kids. I would recommend this place to others without hesitation.

I found this school using a Google search soon after I moved to Austin. I appreciated being able to read what other people had experienced here....the practical educating myself consumer approach. I had no experience in martial arts but expected some health benefits after reading about Tai Chi. Those have exceeded my expectations: blood pressure lowered from emergency room status to normal range, dizziness and room spinning vertigo gone, improved bone density, decreased joint and muscle pain, increased core body strength, and overall better endurance.Other benefits have surprised me. I walk in here and feel a wave of gratitude that I leave an often rude world behind for a while. There are some formal ways respect is shown (bowing, addressing instructors as Mam and Sir). Those are words and motions that can just be done but not meant. But, the expertise, dedication, individualized teaching methods that staff offer to students, the ways students feel about staff and other students cant be faked. That level of respect is there in the eyes, the tone of voice, and in body language. This is a palpable benefit to my body and soul.Another totally unexpected thing is I feel so much younger. Not just the improved body benefits, but the excited Im a student again and there is so much to learn. I will never spend a dull moment if I take advantage of all that is available.

We attended a birthday party at Master Gohrings and for months after my daughter would ask if she could go to Kung Fu. She is very athletic so I thought it would not be a good use of her time. Eventually, we went for the trial classes and she loved it. A year later she is in the Black Sash program and sets goals for herself on when she will be a Black Sash. All of the teachers build a great community. Head Instructor Hunter is our teacher and he is amazing with the kids. He is highly skilled and so patient with the kids and still can act silly so they get to laugh as well as work hard. Six months into our first daughter doing Kung Fu our younger daughter was ready to quit School of Rock and join. It is not what I would have picked but it is great for our girls and they love it. Tonight she was showing me how big her bicep is from push-ups.

Master Gohrings Tai Chi & Kung Fu has been a great experience for my family. My son started Little Dragons with his 4th birthday party and has been in love with going to class, learning to use and control his body. Little Dragons is a wonderful way to let your kids shine, by incorporating group call outs to moves in unison and allowing different kids to lead the group. 6 months later, a little earlier than expected, he was invited to join the older kids and adults in Basic Kungfu or Big Dragons as they call it when inviting the little ones up. 6 months after that my, then 8 year old daughter, joined in. Within a few weeks my wife got the courage to join up. A year later, 2 years in, my family is still loving it. It is a commitment, and it is not always easy for our schedule or budget, but it gives us a goal that we all share and has helped us to become an even stronger team. In April my 3 year old will turn 4 and begin Little Dragons, this is when I will be able to join in as well. Even though he does not take class, we find him getting in his ready stance and practicing the more complex and fun moves, monkey jump is his favorite and he is actually pulling it off. If you are a mixed martial artist and want your family to get put down to get back up, a school of thought I was raised in with wrestling at 4 yrs old, this may not be your place. If you want to better yourself, improve your health, and learn to own your body through ancient techniques of movement, I highly recommend Gohrings, as his instructors are kind and take their own kungfu practice seriously, while encouraging you, lifting you up, and making you laugh. You will find all sort of students, young and old, big and small all working together toward mastering themselves. A journey of a thousand miles, starts with a single step.

Master Gohrings studio has already made an immediate impact on my psyche and confidence. The instructors and fellow students make me feel extremely welcome. While a number of martial arts or other workout classes (e.g. Yoga, Tae Kwon Do, stationary cycling, etc.) that I have attended focus, unintentionally or not, on comparing your progress against other students, Master Gohrings Tai Chi places an enormous emphasis on humility and ones own growth and self realization. There is a level of physically intensity that, while unexpected, has been a wonderful surprise. I am noticing the way I carry myself and control mastery of my body improve drastically. I am learning to carry Tai Chi with me wherever I go in situations that are both stressful and calming and through this art, I am learning to gain a feeling of spiritual and physical balance that has previously been foreign to me. I really like the teacher doing the class and presentation. There was a special introductory offer on the flyer. I visited the website and read the testimonials. I finally got up the nerve to call. I was given the price from the brochure and took my first class late September. After the second free class, I was asked if I was ready to continue and become a student. I am glad that I went forward as I had wanted to learn a martial art but let life get in the way. I like the fact that Master Gohring has a school. I prefer structure and like that there is a curriculum. I like that I can get a sash (belt) as I advance upwards. I like that there are levels so you can see that you are improving. It makes it easier to have a goal. I also like that some of the students have become instructors through the apprentice program. Knowing that they were in my shoes as a beginner and decided to enroll in the Blash Sash and/or Masters Path programs creates a bond. One that I look forward to growing as I continue my studies with Master Gohring. I like that I am learning more than the forms and moves. I am learning the applications and philosophy of Tai Chi. I am happy that I decided to take the introductory offer on the flyer. It was a good decision that will have a lasting and positive impact on my life.

Ive been a student of Master Gohrings on and off (more off than on, to be honest) since 2006. I very much enjoy his school - the instructors are considerate and informed, very skilled, and passionate about their work. Master Gohring himself (hereafter referred to as Sifu, which is Mandarin for teacher/master/mentor) is a very skilled martial artist, and more importantly, and excellent teacher. He seems to innately know when a student needs direction or assistance and when they need to struggle through something on their own.Yes, there are less expensive school (though by the time you add up all the fees most places, they end up being the same amount). Of course, those schools dont allow you to attend class five days a week if you want to, either. Additionally, Sifu is very flexible if you need to suspend your payments, or delay them, while allowing you to continue to attend class.Strongly recommended. Despite my lack of attendance (which I emphasize has nothing to do with the quality of the school, but rather my own career and relationship leaving me without the time to attend), I have found the school to be welcoming, supportive, and home to quality instruction.Id send my kids here, I attend myself, and I try to get my friends to go. Let me begin by saying that Ive spent most of my life being the bull in the china closet. My nickname in High School and College, an adaptation of my last name was...wait for it...Spills. Yep, I WAS that guy. After learning about many different forms of martial arts and even studying Aikido for a short time, I finally discovered the beauty and grace of Tai Chi. I thought, if I could learn a great form of self-defense, lower my stress level AND become graceful, that would truly be an amazing thing. Two years in I have a report to offer. First of all, my blood pressure has dropped from a chin dropping 158/110 to 127/89. Admittedly, Ive been watching my diet in conjunction with Tai Chi but theres no doubt that Ive learned to better control my stress as a direct result of studying with Master Tom Gohring and his staff. Ive yet to be really tested on the self-defense end of things and frankly, hope I never will. However, today, I stand far better suited to accept that challenge that I did one year ago...that I can assure you. For me, the most shocking development has been the development of grace and coordination. What I never fully understood is that the slow-moving, learning method helps you to slow down and FOCUS on where you are stepping, moving, shifting so that you can become more AWARE. What really blew me away is the impact that focus and awareness has had in my everyday life. In personal interactions, business dealings, traffic...you name it. I honestly believe that this is one of the driving factors in the stress reduction that Ive experienced. Now, take all that life changing impact that Ive received studying Tai Chi and add the magic formula. Master Gohring and his staff. He has multiple instructors that work with all levels of students. Friendly, engaging, encouraging and involved would be how I describe them. I have studied with Instructor Durkin and also with Head Instructor Figg . Master Gohring regularly takes over a class, or comes by for individual comments, suggestions or tips. I also really like the stories he tells, often at the end of class, of his background, Masters under whom he has studied or of the history of Tai Chi in general. For me, Tai Chi has become a path I will travel for the rest of my journey. Maybe all this grace and coordination will lead to dance lessons next??

I attended master gohrings kung fu program for 3.5 years, earned my black belt, and improved my health dramatically. Kung fu and the expertise of the instructors allowed me to gain the awareness of my body and biomechanics that I needed to start fixing my scholiosis and resulting bad posture. I worked through knee, back, and hip problems, becoming fit and flexible while discovering my imbalances and weaknesses. I also experienced a bad car accident 2 years into my training, and kung fu helped me recover as much as the physical therapy! I took tae kwon do and capoeira previously, and researched may other martial arts before choosing kung fu for its health benefits. Kung fu is amazing because its not just about self defense, sport, or strength; Its a full body health system, much like yoga. The variation of movements, focus on technique, and combination of moves in the forms are designed to make you use your whole body to the best of its ability in every situation. I also researched every other kung fu school in austin before choosing master gohrings. His was the most traditional, full curriculum, with the most intimate classes. The prices can be higher at the start than other schools, but when youre taking multiple classes a week (I took 4 a week for almost a year leading up to my black belt test) and accruing some discounts over the course of your training it is absolutely the best value. While a year contract sounds harsh, he is also very flexible with suspending your contract should the need arise (I experienced a sudden layoff) and they are happy to cancel it if you move or need to move, like I did. I am continuing my training in my new city, and his library of videos on youtube allow me to continue to practice my old forms. I would go back and sign up again immediately if I was to move back to Austin!
