I can not speak more highly about the Professor, and the culture at Connection Rio! I came to CR on my first day with no experience whatsoever. Professor Dennis Asche has a great style of teaching, and is always patient in correcting your form/technique. Not only is the instruction great, but so are the people. Such a great community to be apart of. We could not be more happy with our experience at this gym. We are so lucky that we found CR upon moving to Bend!Bonus- even got to take part in a self defense/striking course here! Always learning every time I walk through the door.

I spent a week in Bend in August, during which time I went to group classes, and also took five privates with Professor Dennis Asche. What a wonderful experience! My teacher, Mauricio Fernandes, an instructor where I train at Vitor Shaolins academy in NYC, had spent time with Dennis in Rio, and Mauricio highly recommended Dennis, too. Connection Rio in Bend was even better that I anticipated. A beautiful, spotless dojo, with Dennis teaching all the group classes. The students were a welcoming and diverse group, all training hard and physically fit, and all were clearly inspired and motivated by Dennis. I went to the Fundamentals class on my first evening in Bend, and immediately had a great experience. I also took early morning privates with Dennis, to which Dennis always invited one of his blue belts to assist as uke. Dennis, a well-rounded martial artist, takes a holistic approach to BJJ, so he introduced me to judo, too, during my week in Bend. His instruction is precise, and his deep understanding of jiu-jitsu and other martial arts was always shown. He is articulate, and explains and demonstrates with great detail and nuance. Professor Asche is one of the most knowledgeable professors I have had the honor of training under. Ive traveled and moved around a lot and have trained at various different academies around the country and world. The instruction at Connection Rio is definitely one of the best schools I have been to.There is a great mix of students and they are all welcoming and friendly. They have a wide range of backgrounds and goals. You can roll with competitors or just have relaxed flow rolls with chill people.

I was truly fortunate to meet and train with Prof. Dennis in Brazil in 2003. I have trained around the world and rarely have I met an instructor so technical, passionate and gifted in the art of teaching. In my case I am truly grateful as Prof. Dennis went out of his way to help a lowly Blue Belt develop a solid advanced game. He would wake up each day, very very early so we would have the mats to ourselves prior to the start of regular classes. He took me under his wing to coach me one on one, and made an incredible impact on my game. My husband and I have been attending Connection Rio since the middle of August. The facility is clean and well maintained. Everyone is required to get their temperature checked upon entry (due to COVID restrictions) and there is a foot wash you need to use before coming on the mat. The mat is also cleaned right after each class, so it is kept in great shape and everyone seems to respect the rules as well.The people who attend are helpful, professional, and respectful. I have met a lot of really kind people who are passionate about BJJ and are happy to assist you in learning how to better your techniques.Professor Dennis is an excellent instructor and gives you time to learn a new technique and ask questions. He is professional and gives attention to all the students on the mat. He is happy to help whenever you ask and even dedicates a day for you to bring your questions to class so you and everyone else can practice drilling that technique.At the moment, there are also other classes that are available at the gym. I currently do the Monday evening Judo class and the Thursday morning no gi class. Both courses are an excellent addition to the other classes and compliment skills being developed in BJJ.Judo is especially fun because I get to sweep my husband off his feet (literally) but also because the class is a great size which allows for space and time to drill the new techniques.I really enjoy the no gi class because the instructor is respectful of the students levels and meets us where we are at. I am not shy to ask questions and he is happy to go over the technique with you until you get it down. The no gi class also has little easter egg techniques that I have been able to use in BJJ which make me just a little bit more confident.I feel like I have learned a lot at this gym already and I am excited to keep coming because I feel like I get better every week. I always learn something new every day and I know that with more time and dedication that I will continue to grow here. I am not good by any means, but I get better every day which is what matters.I encourage you to come to this gym and try out their classes. Its a great way to learn something new and have fun doing it. You may find your new passion! If you feel intimidated, I am 50 and weigh 110lbs AND I am the smallest person in the class at the moment BY FAR. Just keep that in mind. Everyone and anyone can find their strengths in this class and its just a matter of giving it a try and adopting a learner mindset. Hope to see you in class!

I met Dennis over 15 years ago when we were both chasing our martial arts dreams training in Brazil. He was always one of the toughest black belts in a room with the best of the best. Best atmosphere for serious training! The pace is constantly pushed and there are great things happening here. Quality instruction and even all the white belts feel solid! One of the only gyms that actually drills movements to warm up before teaching technique in Bend. Positional sparring reinforces what you just learned. Live sparring gives you a chance to put it all together. Excellent method of teaching and learning.

Professor Dennis Asche is one of the most intense BJJ coaches I have ever had the chance to learn from. He taught a drills class for gringos at Gordos gym in Rio that had us working through scenarios with and without a partner that were more exhausting and informative than drilling with a partner at most academies. I’ve been training with Dennis for almost a year now. I cannot recommend this academy enough. It has a great atmosphere and provides a challenging but safe and welcoming environment to train in. I bought a very expensive 6 month gift card for my husband for Xmas sometime in November. Unfortunately before Christmas came he was diagnosed with cancer and had urgent surgery within days of his diagnosis. He had his surgery and a few months later went in there to see if he could either refund me or extend the time frame of when I could redeem my gift certificate.( A 90 day limit in small print). The guy that helped us said he would talk to the owner and he would reach out to me. My husband told him we could show him the surgery scar and paperwork proving that he had cancer and he said we probably didnt need that. Later I found out the man we were talking to was the owner and was lying to avoid the issue!!. And I never heard from them again, despite several attempts to call. For 500 dollars worth of services all we ended up with was lies and disappointment. What kind of heartless person screws over someone with cancer? All we wanted was for him to be able to use the service I paid for after he healed

I met Prof. Asche close to 6 years ago when I stayed at Connection Rio. Not knowing someone and putting your trust in them isnt easy but I made the jumpnto go train in Rio and I was immediately happy I did. There are no grey areas and when it comes to training and expectations, everything is on the table. The training was top notch and the instruction was down to the last detail. If you are looking for a place to train, that provides no nonsense training, great instruction, and a great atmosphere, then check out Connection Rio. Having known and trained with Dennis Asche in Brazil I can confirm that he is a highly proficient and attentive teacher with plenty of experience and a solid pedigree that was hard earned. A lifelong martial artist, he dedicated nearly a decade of his life to studying jiu-jitsu in Rio de Janeiro under some of the best-known and most respected coaches in the world, such as Carlos Gracie Jr and Roberto Gordo. Dennis was one of the few non-Brazilians to teach a regular class in Rio de Janeiro, where I was able to experience his teaching firsthand. This is the place to train Jiu Jitsu! I started with no knowledge whatsoever and was hesitant to come in and try. As soon as we started training I knew I was signing up. Professor Asche is dedicated to his academy and all his students. He teaches mornings and evenings. Professor structures every class to learning techniques that flow together and he pushes you to better yourself. The other teachers who teach Judo and No Gi are also amazing and very knowledgeable. The atmosphere is calm, friendly and makes you want to push hard. Great people train here and always want to help you better your skills. You always feel welcome. Ive been training for 5 months now. Started and still at CRA (Connection Rio Academy). Professor Dennis, the Brown, Purple, Blue, and even White belts at CRA are all super knowledgeable, friendly, and encourage you to keep stepping up your BJJ and Judo. On my first day, blue belts Sam and Tye got me going and were super awesome despite me being a generally nonathletic person and not having a clue where to start. I didnt have any experience in Martial Arts, but that didnt matter. Everyone has always been amazing and supportive as we all collectively work toward the same goal of improving our BJJ and enjoying the comradery with other guys who likewise push themselves to do better and be better. I recently competed in a large competition in Portland, and not only did CRA kill it with dominating nearly all the divisions entered in, but Dennis and a lot of the CRA Fam were there to coach and cheer me and everyone else on in our matches. The insight, support, encouragement, accountability, and outright BJJ excellence at CRA is worth every bruise, choke, sore muscle, morning 6am training or late night no-gi training with brown belt Danny. When my girlfriend met CRA Fam at the competition, she was blown away by how nice and professional every single person was. You cant truly call yourself peaceful” unless you are capable of great violence. CRA is filled with some of the most capable, yet also some of the most kind and peaceful individuals outside of a roll. Im now 5 months into a foreseeable lifetime of training BJJ and looking forward to my kiddo joining in as well.

This is the best BJJ gym I have ever been to. Professor Dennis Asche is an amazing coach. He does a great job breaking down moves and techniques making them easy to learn. I have really appreciated how he has pushed me to improve my game and I see that he shows the same dedication to all his students. The training environment is great too, egos are left at the door and everyone is respectful. You earn your belt in this gym, it is not given, which to me makes it a bigger accomplishment.
