I reviewed the school previously right before it opened. Weve been there through the whole journey and my son will be finishing 5th grade this year and my daughter will be finishing 1st. 3 years and we still have nothing but good things to say. Both my kids love going to school and we love the whole-child approach. No school is perfect, but New Summit is pretty close!

My family has been a part of New Summit since it opened 3 years ago. There are so many things I appreciate about NSCA. The teachers are incredibly supportive and genuinely care about my child and ALL children. Each teacher has rallied around my child to ensure she gets the help she needs as she struggles academically. When you walk in the building the atmosphere is welcoming, fun, and you are met with smiling faces. The administration team has gone above and beyond to create a culture where students know they are loved and respected. The teaching staff truly captures the hearts of the students and are intentional about getting to know their students. I truly appreciate this and love this the most about NSCA. The entire staff make NSCA what it is and I encourage people to check it out for themselves. I also love all the fun spirit days; the staff always cracks me up with their creativity. I highly recommend this school.

Over the entire time my family has been there, not just COVID and with the exception of the 1st grade teacher who is no longer there, administration appears adverse to communicating with parents. My child was in the red for reading all last school year, which I learned this school year.I took over in the spring working really hard, we got my student in the green for the start of this year.We have agreed to everything the school recommended and supported from home as recommended as well. Only to find out our student is back in the red at Christmas time. Why was this never communicated BEFORE it got this bad? It appears to me this school is not teaching my student how to read and they dont want to tell parents the real status of their students. If you are going to this school, be engaged and ask specific questions! Your childs education will still be up to you.

The staff is so kind and helpful they have handled opening a new school with grace and poise. My daughter loves school and loves her teacher so much. She said she has the nicest teacher ever . Just in a short time the teacher has had such an impact on my daughter that she wanted to buy her teacher a gift with her own piggy bank money. This was all her idea and she used her own money to do so this is huge! The principal is amazing she is kind and wonderful! I have never in my life felt so comfortable and happy with a principal of a school. Thank you for being so wonderful and kind and warm and open to all the students! The school has exceeded my expectations and some! It’s is always hard to start a new school there is so many things to figure out and learn. We need to continue to have grace and give our full support to this amazing school and their wonderful staff!!

We are so happy with New Summit!! We were on the fence about having our son start kindergarten this year as he has a late birthday. We had numerous opportunities to talk with the principal and vice principal prior to starting. They made us feel so welcomed and put us at ease about every thing. It got even better once he started. He is in Mrs. Tuning’s class and absolutely loves her! He is learning so much and has been grouped into a group of kids who are at the same skill level. He loves going to school each day and loves his classmates! We are thrilled!! Thank you to all the special teachers and administrators who have made this school such an amazing place to be! We are so Thankful!!!!

New Summit Charter Academy is an incredible place for children to be. In 13 years of working with schools, agencies, and other professionals to get a child’s needs met I have never seen such an incredible organization work in the best interests of kids the way that New Summit does. The staff go above and beyond to fight for and alongside kids. Kids are taught what character is and that emotions are okay. Students are given life skills alongside books skills that will make them successful! I can’t imagine a better place for kids of Colorado Springs to be!

So far this has been an amazing school. It’s always hard making a choice to change schools especially to go into a brand new school just starting. So far the school has gone great both of kids are happy there. All of the staff I have meet have been very friendly. I’m very impressed with the curriculum they use. I love that they have many choices for uniforms and more open on the policy than one shirt one pant. Very happy these first few months.

Our son is enrolled at New Summit Charter Academy. He is currently in Grade 1 and he absolutely loves his school! Recently he had a doctors appointment in the morning and he was quite upset because he had to miss an hour of school. This is rare! Most kids I know, would love to miss school. But New Summit is such an amazing school, with wonderful teachers and staff. Our son is learning some sign language from his teacher, he has Spanish, Art and Music classes too. Our daughter is in the preschool attached to the school and she cant wait to start Kinder next year. I love the small-town feel of the school, the love our teachers and staff have for the kids and how inclusive it is. Truly a great experience!

My grandchildren are enrolled in New Summit and love it. The student to teacher ratio is small giving time for more individual attention. The teachers are upbeat and positive. The children are allowed to learn from mistakes by dealing with consequences. After 25 years of teaching Special Ed in a traditional school I am very encouraged at the quality of education my grandchildren will get at New Summit. Thanks to the Principal and her group of hard working volunteers we have a better choice for our children’s education.

We love New Summit Charter Academy and are thrilled with our decision to move our children there. The staff is kind and they go out of their way to show their students they care. Staff members, including the Principal, are at the doors every morning, welcome students as they enter and giving them a high-five. Our children feel welcome and loved which the most important thing to us. If you see any negative reviews, please know that we disagree wholeheartedly and ask you to reach out to the school before believing them.

This is is a new school to the area with a few issues. First Is the school claims the permits for the cafeteria never got approved as the reason they do not have one. The kids when they do get lunch they only get 15 minutes to eat before being rushed out the door. For little people that isn’t much time and my daughter often comes home having barely touched her food. Second they recently fired many of their teachers in the middle of the term forcing the kids to be distributed into other classes in the middle of the year. Our daughter loved her teacher and was doing amazing in her work. Now she has asked us to move her to another school. As this is one of the more expensive and strict schools in the area, you would expect it to be more consistent. We had a lot of hopes and the way this whole thing was handled completely bling sided the teachers and the parents. When I posted a complaint on the schools social media page for discussion they even went as far as to delete the post and replace it with a enroll you student post. They go along way to hide negative reviews and comments rather than do anything to improve the situation. Very disappointed as we had very high hopes for this school.

Our names are Stephanie and Vic Johnson, known at the school as Grandma Steph and Grandpa Vic. We’ve had five children and seven grandchildren in the District 20 system over the years. In that time, our satisfaction with the schools diminished significantly. We felt we needed something different for our 11 year old grandson. When we found the New Summit Charter Academy, did it have a playground, a library, or a cafeteria? No. However, it did have a welcoming and fantastic administrative staff which includes the followingpersonnel:Kim – PrincipleJenn – Vice PrincipleJess – RegistrarGinger – SecretaryNikki – ReceptionistJohn – Facilities PLUSJoshua –MaintenanceThis team, along with the remaining staff and teachers, are working hard to achieve their goal of providing an outstanding school environment for the New Summit students. Our grandson never liked school. Now, he loves it. His amazing teacher, Ms Arbury, has him on trackand focused. He adores her. We cannot say thank you enough to all of the teachers and staff for their support, love and kindness. We have finally found what we were looking for. It feels like home, and as we all agree, there’s no place like home. Why don’t you come and see for yourselves.

We submitted an expression of interest form and cant wait to see what the future holds. I am excited for more choices in education for more my children.

I had heard of New Summit from my neighbor, but hadnt looked into it myself until months later. Once I attended an Open House I was sold! A classical approach to education, focus on literacy, and placing students with their *skill level* vs. grade level had me hooked. I currently homeschool my three youngest children for a multitude of reasons, but I feel as though many of those will dissolve with New Summit as their school. Im incredibly excited and thoroughly impressed by the choices in curriculum (Core Knowledge and Singapore Math), as well at the planned teaching of cursive. I also love the emphasis on teaching character through our historical figures, and learning to love learning. The more I learn about our new school the more our decision to send our kids there solidifies.

I highly recommend NOT sending your child to this school! The staff and one of the first grade teachers has done their best to try to destroy the self esteem of my 7 year old grandson. He is a little boy with a very active imagination. He is rambunctious but also very smart and sweet. My daughter has been to several medical professionals thinking there is something wrong with him and each one has told her the same thing... he is a typical 7 year old boy with a wild imagination. This school wants him to have a psychiatric evaluation because of a comment he made about killing a bear! Sorry if this offends all of you animal activists and liberals but it is a way of life for some. He isnt crazy! The school also wants to have rights to be a part of his evaluation. I think the first grade teacher needs an evaluation, after all, she got mad and broke my grandsons pencil in front of him because he was playing with it!! This was validated by another student and I listened in on a meeting my daughter attended. If your child is a perfectly behaved smart individual I guess this could be the school for you!The therapist and pediatrician that my grandson has been seeing for the past year have both agreed there is NOTHING wrong with him and that this is not the school for him.I could go on and on talking about all the events that have taken place that have negatively affected my daughter and her family but I dont have time to write a book. I feel sorry for my daughter and son-in-law as they have done everything they know to do to make it better. They have tried their best to follow the suggestions of the school even while my husband and I have disagreed and suggested they pull him out!I pray that new summit learns from this and changes their narrow minded ways of thinking and maybe learn to have more patience with our children! They are all different and special in their own way!I myself, wouldnt want my grandson to be any other way! He has brought so much joy to our family! He makes us laugh every single day! I love his imagination and his witt!Btw, New Summit, Every occasion that requires a gift he gets something educational from me. He learns it so fast that I cant keep up! He is a bright little boy and it is so sad that you dont know how to teach him!

They don’t even notice that the playground hasn’t been installed yet. Also, I’m glad the start of school was pushed back. Why would we want our kids to be somewhere all day, every day that isn’t 100% safe?I love that for the next 18 years my family will be involved with NSCA!

Unfortunately Ive seen experiences I wouldnt have wished on anyone or their children. This school should be excellent, as a new charter school in D20 with great potential, however they have staff who are not only unwilling to cater to kids who need additional attention and time, but are downright upsetting. As a teacher myself, I was appalled at some of the things being done inside the classroom, and how the situations were being handled.... everything from separating a child from the rest of the students into a confined space (a box on the floor), calling DHS for unrelated issues, to asking a parent if they can have permission to break HIPPA laws. I believe this school could be great for students who never have any issues, but if you have a normal 6-8 year old who occasionally doesnt want to sit, or has a bad day, youll likely end up with a discipline record with undeserving suspensions, and aggressive Facebook messages from teachers.

I’m beginning to think that these are the reviews of either the benefactors or the staff at NSCA. When my daughter was first enrolled I was ecstatic because of the high reviews but have consistently been let down at every turn. It didn’t bother me that after two years the school was still under construction to where hot food couldn’t be served for the first half of the year. It also didn’t bother me that only the kindergarteners and fifth and sixth graders were allowed to do a Christmas show citing the size of the HS auditorium that was being loaned to us. It also didn’t bother me that the school though beautiful, resembles a cold office building instead of an actual learning facility. What really got under my skin is my daughters teacher. She would pick at my daughter daily. From her lip gloss to her headband, making snide remarks to her, you name it! I addressed it several times before and the issue was fixed temporarily but then she would find something else to break my kid down about. She went as far as to tell the entire class not to be like my kid because her tights were red and were outside of the uniform. According to the policy, socks were to match the school uniform and tights are located in the socks section in ANY clothing store therefore they are socks. Why the teacher felt the need to embarrass an innocent 8 year old idk but she did. Not to mention she would stand within my kids earshot whispering about her to another teacher. She obviously doesn’t whisper well because my kid heard her EVERY SINGLE TIME. Also, in the library, my kid is constantly having books taken from her by the librarian discouraging her from reading. My kid LOVES to read and is an avid reader so to have the librarian take books that she is interested in reading away just because they are a grade above is disheartening. My kid reads above her grade level so they should continue to encourage that! This among several other major issues is why I asked for a classroom change. When asked for a classroom change the principal agreed to a meeting after several phone calls and emails and tried to downplay my concerns. She wanted to review the contract and told me that of allllllll of my concerns that I could only address two of the most pressing ones that I have. Two? Two!?! My kid is in tears when she goes to YOUR school in the mornings and you’re telling me that you will only allow me 30 mins of your precious time and of that time, only two of my issues will be addressed? You’ve got to be kidding me? So instead of waste both her time and mine I began the withdrawal procedure. Registering her with another school was a friggin breeze, it’s withdrawing her from NSCA that’s a NIGHTMARE!!!! I have been promised phone call after phone call and even had my call disconnected prematurely by the registrar. I wasn’t rude, nor condescending, nor nasty, I spoke matters of factly and got to the point. I honestly am feeling like my kid is being targeted because of her ethnicity because she is one of only a handful of little brown kids in that school however, I have no idea what the others are experiencing. I have an amazingly sweet little girl who loves to learn and the systematic bullying at this school by the leaders have all but broken her. I do NOT recommend this school unless you change the staff starting from the top. The only way that things will change is if it begins at the top.

We love NSCA, my child is about to finish her kindergarten year here and we cant wait to return next year. The staff truly loves and cares for the children. Before we enrolled and the school was even open Mrs. Reissig gave me her phone number and spent an hour answering my questions and informing me how New Summit was going to be different. I was already 99% sure we were going to attend. It was meeting Mrs. Mclelland that pushed us that 1%! She sealed the deal for us for sure. Her vision for the school matched exactly what I wanted for my daughter! In the middle of the year there were some changes and sadly a couple teachers were let go, my daughters teacher quit and the PTO was rebranded so to say. Through all of this the administration was very transparent and open and willing to answer any questions. They also made my daughters transition to a new teacher seamless. My daughter loves going to school and her least favorite part is leaving. She loves her teacher and her fellow students. Thank you NSCA for a great first year!

We have been very happy with our experience at NSCA. My daughter used to come home in tears after school last year from ourour neighborh school. She did not feel listened to when she told her teacher about someone bullying her and the teacher made them sit next to each other so year. This year she comes home happy. She still has girls in her class that are not very nice to her but she feels like her teacher will listen to her and help her get through the issues at the time they happen. Staff is extremely pleasant and very concerned with kid safety! Teachers stand outside with their students until they are all picked up. They check to see who is picking up the kids, they help little ones with doors and backpacks. They do a great job of directing traffic for pick up and drop off.People who are unhappy with this school need to remember that this is a brand new school. Not everything is going to be perfect. If you want perfection then go to a more established school. But I guarantee that they wont find perfection there either. Not having a playground is a silly thing to be upset about. I have been there for recess. The kids all have a ball playing with hoops, ropes, balls and making up their own games. The drop off and pick up process is the most efficient one Ive ever seen.I believe that the passion and drive of the staff and board will help this school become a great success. I am so glad we choiced into NSCA!

Love this school! My kids LOVE this school! As with all places, it may not be everyones cup-o-tea. I have seen some posts that families were upset about the late start, no play ground, etc. All I can say is ASK questions.....and COME VISIT the school. This school just opened its doors in late August 2018. YES, there is currently NO play ground jungle gym system.....but they have soccer balls, foot balls, basket balls, hoola-hoops, jump ropes, etc. for kids to be kids and exercise and have fun during recess (the Jungle Gym is on The loading dock and should start installation before Thanksgiving 2018).YES, the year has started a bit slower than many parents expected. The school and the teachers have never meet any of the students or families for any length of time before the doors opened. So the teachers are all having to start from scratch and get too know each kiddo and family. The likes, dislikes, quirks, expectations, etc. You can say that all schools have to do this.....but they do not......if your family has been attending a school for a year or two....the teachers and faculty have had many opportunities to meet and / or observe your student and your family for some time prior to having them in class. And they did not have to start from scratch with over 500 new students. So please give the teachers and staff some breathing room. They are all good people trying to make this school absolutely fabulous this year and years to come. They have now completed or nearly completed with all of the testing to figure out how to best stimulate the individual learning process for the students.A CARING AND SAFE ENVIRONMENT.I have also seen posts about parents being upset about accessing the school (parking restrictions, access to the school, etc.) The pick-up and drop-off process has been partially dictated by the city. While I also know that parking my truck next to the front door of the school would be extremely convenient and save me many steps to the school.....it is for the safety of ALL the students to NOT have parents park in the main 2 lots during Pick-up and Drop-off time frames. This includes during lunch time...because the school operates 1/2 day kindergarten and pre-school that have drop-off and pick-up at that time. If that does not work, you can always call and schedule a time. Do not assume....ASK QUESTIONS.ASK QUESTIONS:The Staff, Teachers, Principal, Asst. Principal, Administrative Staff are all welcoming, willing and able to answer your questions. So far...the negative reports appear to be from families that did not ask questions and were surprised when the outcome was not what they expected. This could be for many different reasons....but could happen at any school if as a parent you have not done your homework. The Principal and Staff put on a large number of MEET-AND-GREET meetings, school tours, etc starting clear back before March 2018 and continuing up until the doors opened in August. And they were offered during the day and many in the evening to accomodate working parents. Nearly everything I have seen posted as a negative had been covered during those meetings.....and on the school facebook page well before the school opened.Other than that....Luckily for us in Colorado Springs we have education options for our young learners. The Loving and caring environment for my young learners.....the only option is New Summit Charter Academy. Perhaps another option will better suite the unhappy few and your students learning needs and expectations. But if you are looking for a great educational opportunity for your kiddos, learners and young students I highly recommend that you give New Summit Charter Academy a look. Do yourself a favor, come in and take a tour, speak with the Teachers and Principal for yourself.Lastly, I am not a teacher or faculty of the school, just a parent that has asked a LOT of questions, volunteered at the school and spoken with many of the teachers and staff to establish my perspective.Best wishes on your educational search.

My husband and I thought a classical approach would work for our son, but quickly realized it was not. My husband and I wanted to transfer our son to another D20 school after getting the approval of the D20 office, the NSCA assistant principal, and the other choice school. However, Principal McClelland blocked this action due to a policy NSCA had made with D20 stating NSCA does not allow students to transfer to another choice school—even if the family feels it is in the child’s best interest and other parties are in agreement. In her words, “I’m not going to onesie and twosie who gets to follow the policy.” I’ve never felt so disrespected in my life. We were not informed of this policy until we went to get the paper work for a school transfer from NSCA. Sadly, I believe Principal McClelland’s refusal to allow a school transfer is more about school funding than about doing what is best for the student, and her lack of respect towards us made me lose respect for her. I had high hopes for New Summit and was more than willing to give the new school a chance, but was proven that our choice to send our son here was a mistake.*I do not feel the school is misrepresented in my review. We moved here at the end of spring and enrolled mid summer. The only meeting we were aware of was the meet and greet that was held on what was supposed to be the first day of school because the school was not able to pass its inspection, twice. None of these polices were “clearly communicated” to us. All we experienced for our short period was disorganization and failure to communicate. We were willing to extend some grace towards the school, but in multiple ways I truly believe they were not prepared to open this school year with enough resources to beat serve the students—staff and building.I will own my piece of the pie and say there might have been a misunderstanding on my part, but I feel the facts of our experience need to be shared. Aside from wanting to transfer to another school, there were so many cumulative things that led us to that decision—the final being hearing my son’s teacher react to the class after he had an accident in front of everyone, knowing that he would not be allowed to transfer to another class. It only got worse from there. I hope the school improves over time. I just hated to waste six months to a year for them to get to the point that I feel the bar should be set in order for a school building to operate.—about a week after school finally started, my son’s teacher didn’t let him go to the bathroom. He had an accident in his class room while everyone was in the room. I brought him a change of clothes and sat with him in the bathroom as he cried. He said his teacher wasn’t very nice and that he wanted to go home. I could hear her across the hall while she spoke harshly to some of the students. I really feel if you are interacting with small children (first grade in this situation) you should certainly respond kindly and gently to them. I’ve had several people (including other teachers) tell me it was unlawful for her to not allow him to go to the bathroom when he expressed he needed to go.
