If I could give this place 10 stars I would! If you have a child who is struggling with self confidence or self esteem then dont hesitate to sign them up here. The transformation in my son started after the very first class and has steadily continued to in a positive direction! I only wish I had signed him up sooner.

By far, the best gym Ive felt welcome to in a long while. As soon as I walked in, I was welcome with open arms by Jose and Shawn. The whole atmosphere is just relaxing, not to mention everyone there that has already been training, just how kind and welcoming they are to help you train better. This gym is by far the best in the greater Gainesville area, and theyve won a customer for life. OSS!

Through out my time here, Ive been consistently treated like family. Everyone is always super supportive on and off of the mats. Coach José is a trove of information and we often have high level instructors and visitors to bring in new knowledge and perspectives. I started the sport for the exercise. I will stay for the compassion from my teammates and the endless competition.

I have been going to Gracie Barra Gainesville for a few weeks now. The experience is amazing, the coaching staff is great. I love the atmosphere I walk into everyday. People are very welcoming. I was nervous for my first class, but quickly got over that. Jose is a very knowledgeable coach along with Grey and Mike. Good for beginners, and a way of learning self defense. I would highly recommend. Hope to see you on the mats!

Been training at Gracie Barra Gainesville for a while now and I love it! The atmosphere is great, everyone is super friendly, open and are great training partners! I’ve trained in other places before too and I must say Gracie Barra Gainesville tops them!

I came to GB Gainesville at 52 years old, with zero martial arts experience. I came just for a free class, never intending to go back. During that free class, I was treated like I was family, not an outsider. I’ve been there now for about 10 months and I’ve moved through the ranks faster than I thought, and I’ve learned more than I thought I could or would. I would recommend this school for anyone who’s even remotely interested in self defense, martial arts or just learning something new. Ive been going to classes here for around 3 months now, and it is a great environment. The BJJ coaches, Jose, Mike, and Gray, (Gustavos coached a few classes too) are very knowledgeable. They are always willing to help out with whatever anyone is struggling with, and this is also true for the others that train here. I would feel comfortable asking anyone for help on moves I may not be fully understanding and lots of the folks training here will stay after class to help, as well. The striking coach, Mark, is also super knowledgeable, and he may be an actual ninja. They make it very easy to keep on coming back and attending classes, I couldnt imagine training anywhere else.

I have had the honor of training at this gym for the last couple years. I’ve been training for a total of 19 years and know the personalities of the professors, coaches and students can make or break a newcomer’s experience. I have never seen a more welcoming group of people. Besides the instructors having a ton of BJJ knowledge they are willing to pass on, the owner/head instructor for the school Jose Alvarez has a passion for teaching and regularly pulls in professors from other surrounding Gracie Barra schools to also share their knowledge and perspectives with students.

Id like to start this off by saying that Im a blue belt from a gym in the Forsyth county area. Because of GB Gainesvilles partnership with UNGs BJJ club I occasionally have the opportunity to drop in to their adult classes after the club meetings. All of the fellow students and instructors that Ive trained with have been warm and welcoming. The gyms curriculum is very impressive, Coach Jose has a lot of depth to his game and hes phenomenal at breaking down techniques and showing how and why they function from a biomechanical perspective. If youre interested in BJJ I doubt youll find a nicer facility in the area.

I’ve been meaning to leave a review for quite some time now. It’s now been over 2 years since I first started training at GB Gainesville. My background consisted of some wrestling and then military combative training. At my 2 year mark in the army (82nd) I was hit by an IED, resulting in the loss of my left arm and right leg, with other injuries sustained. While grappling with a friend one day, I had realized that all my defense/grappling techniques were muscle memory with 4 limbs. For example, a cross collar choke obviously won’t work the same with one hand. I went by GB Gainesville the following week in hopes to retrain my body to retain new muscle memory. At first I was worried that nobody would be able to train somebody in my condition. Coach Jose was quite the opposite, he was more excited to teach me than I was to learn BJJ. At first it was extremely difficult (it still is at times), but it is a family that helps push one another toward success. Eventually I was tapping people with four limbs, confidence boosted, and my overall game progressed in time. No matter what your injuries, age, size, or impairment, this gym maintains the GB motto of Jiu Jitsu for everyone.

My family and I decided to be bold and try Brazilian Jiu Jitsu the summer of 2019. As parents of two young daughters, my wife and I want to equip them with all the skills they need to be happy and SAFE as they grow up to be independent women. We are a “all for one, and one for all family” so we all signed up to learn BJJ from Jose and Jess.From the first moment, we have all been very welcomed and encouraged. The family atmosphere at GB Gainesville is great - when we arrive it feels like we are visiting a friends house, except we are there to train! Gracie Barra Gainesville hosts an amazing family oriented facility for everyone and it’s evident in all the training sessions or just walking in and making conversation. So welcoming. The coaches have a way of making you feel comfortable right off the bat whether youre brand new or experienced. You can tell these coaches know their stuff. Its a relaxed atmosphere but serious training. You wont find a strong focus on true BJJ in most other mma gyms.

Been to many Jiu Jitsu, MMA and Muay Thai gyms over the years. And this one is one of the best! Jiu Jitsu Coach Jose is very knowledgeable and a tough competitor. The stand up (Muay Thai Coach) Mark is great as well! Definitely a gym for all ages! Highly recommend!

Great staff and clean facility. Additionally, I (40-yr old man) enjoy the teaching and camaraderie that exists here. Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is a practical self-defense tool and an awesome workout! My kids (7 and 9) asked to join as well and recently begun their instruction!
