An exceptional schools. This school provides a variety of majors and certifications for students. Teacher and administrator are knowledgeable and attentive. Everyone here care about each other and the schools spirit is desire by many other school. They embrace students and make them feel as if they were at home. The school is also safe and reliable. If you are in the area come in, they provide tours for future candidates.Note: This is vocational school, so you or your child will graduate with enough experience to work in their fields.#fashion #school #students #embrace #teacher

I currently go to this school and I love it. Everyone is different and unique in their own ways. The teachers are sometimes a bit on the crazy side but most are very sweet and get the school work done. The school isnt TERRIBLE. There has only been 2 fights in the years Ive been here. Its mostly girls. Also, drugs have been done in the bathrooms but hardly if ever. I think this school is much better then any other New York City High School. The special art classes are fantastic (Since I am an art major) They supply you with most of the materials and every art teacher I had was great. The school isnt the cleanest but its not like there is dirty food all over the hallways. I think that anyone who will come to this school with a unique passion for Art, Business or Fashion will love it and love the people who go here.

This school has given me many many opportunities. I am a fashion major and the school really helped me a lot to develop my skill. Grab as many opportunities as the school offers. A safe space for lgbt students. If you take education seriously then you wouldnt have issues with any teacher. Dont mind the negative reviews. Trust me they all just being salty.

The school has a lot to offer if you are pro-active. Things like internships and opportunities in the fashion industry will come easily if you talk to your teachers and get involved. Academics are also getting much better with the addition of several more AP and honors classes. The school is a bit crowded but overall, its a great place with (in my opinion) some inspirational people.

As a recent graduate all I have to say is that if you want your child to receive a true education and be proficient in all subjects do not send you child here. The school is very irresponsible and each year are bringing more and more kids which unfortunately leads them into just throwing you in a whatever class because of the limited space. There are very few teachers here that are good teachers and that truly seem to enjoy educating others but many of the others only revolve around favoritism and dont really seem to care if you are not learning. This school is good in the area that you get to experience majoring in either fashion design, art, fashion marketing, or visual merchandising and allows you to figure out if it is truly your passion before you go on to college. But I do not feel like I received the education that one should have and wish I wouldve went to a stricter school that did not let students run wild with about 15 girls a period cutting class in the bathrooms and leaving it filthy.

Listen, if you are dedicated to fashion and this is what you want to do this school is perfect. Im not going to lie, yes the girls are ghetto and unnecessary, no its not the cleanest but is that really what you go to an art high school for? This school offers so many opportunities, you can meet so many professionals. It may be hard because your school mates arent the most supportive, Debby downers all the time, but if you stick with what you want and why you came here this school is fantastic.

I think this school has a lot to offer to students if they want to learn and are active in the community. I am impressed with the faculty. Their education level, approach to students and communication with me as a parent are great. As a teacher and graduate of this school, having been both before and behind the teachers desk, I have been fortunate to experience both sides.Students are given every opportunity to learn, excel and succeed provided they WANT TO. It takes more than the teacher and the parent to produce stellar students. The teenager must want to rise above and not just aim for better, BE BETTER. Our school is larger than the average school, the way schools use to be and just like LaGuardia, Bronx Science, Brooklyn Tech and Stuyvesant, it has managed to maintain a phenomenal reputation, despite the challenges. When the average passing grade for a NYC high school student is 70, our student average is 85. More than half of our student population (+1600) has an 85 or above. What does that say about its teachers and staff? We are a learning environment andour goal and focus is to teach not control, discipline, or regulate. These are the focuses of a correctional facility or jail, not a school. When student come to school to learn, the rest is easy. Granted as young adults learning to become independent is not easy. I can attest to this as a former student, yet my grandmother, who was my guardian taught me well. There was nothing more important than my education. Going to school wasnt to kill time, something to do, or a pass time, it was and is what got me out of my past and gifted me my future. It is my absolute honor to be working in the same building that gave me that chance and I hope all parents and guardians continue to work with us in doing our job. Remind the kids, we do this for them, but its useless if they dont do their part. And I challenge anyone that states differently.

Honestly, the way teachers grade in this school (specifically living environment) is unbelievable. It is so terrible. If you suffer from anxiety and depression i would 10/10 not recommend this school. It’s hard on students (maybe not all). I’m only a freshman and i want to change schools already. It’s crazy.

(Current Freshman/Soon-to-be-Sophmore) The school is not all roses and daisies. Its very... ancient for lack of a better word. Many classrooms havent been renovated and theres some older appliances to work with. Its not the most cleanest of all schools. Elevators getting crowded easily to the point where youre leaning, and pushed back on people. There are plenty of disrespectful students and less than great teachers which is not uncommon in many schools. That being said, there are plenty of motivated students and teachers. There are teachers that will take time out of their day to help their students pass, or to help them with whatever endeavors they chose to enter. Many teachers form playful friendships with students, and build some sort of trust among them which only increases the students respect for the teacher. The principal is very very nice and helpful. You see him all the time out in the cold or warmth greeting students as they enter the building, talking to students, meeting with them, encouraging them, etc... Hes a great person. There are many many girls in the school (over 90%). So, it may be hard to adjust as a male. However, regardless of gender you will make some great friends guaranteed. So far in this school, Ive witnessed no violence, drug abuse, etc... Addressing the ease of entering the school, the DOE threatens to split the school due to its large size and older age. Thus, to remedy this they have to be a little less selective with choosing students in order to keep the school up. So, all-in-all this is a great school to attend if you are absolutely determined to enter fashion, art, or merchandising. If you feel as if the school is not what you expected when you enter and feel to transfer. Know that this feeling will eventually pass as you develop friendships with both students and staff alike (also you could be randomly placed if you choose to transfer). As well as delve into the curriculum of your chosen major. Cheers!P.S.They received 7 consecutive As on their report card which they like to boast, but just keep that in mind.

Although this school claims its self to be the best place for the education and for fashion and art , trust me it is not. The teachers first off have no control over the students therefore there are tons of fights and disruptions. ANYONE will be accepted into this school including people who are thieves, ghetto , and lets just say, very stereotypical people. If you still want to come here, at least dont use the hallway lockers at all and have and use your gym locker.

Im a current sophomore and i must say Its a great school with many opportunities if your intrested in entering the fashion industry weither its Visual merchandising, Designing, Art, even modelling. We even have our own clothing line called fly. Its a very fun school to go to to however the children and the staff are very Rude can be overbearing and alot of people transfer because of it. And recently there have been incidents with staff putting there hands on students and being very aggressive. I have also personally witnessed this and i wanted people to be aware of this. There are a few great teachers that truely care about students but alot of times it is overshadowed by the mean rude horrible and unethical behavior of the other staff.

I love HSFI. I think attending there has been one of the best decisions I have made in my life and its something Id recommend to anyone. I dont think I have ever encountered an environment as amazing that not only gives you a school education but also teaches you self love, appreciation of different cultures and allows you the opportunities to reach outside yourself to help others. I think that school pushes good to greatness. and I feel really bad for those who didnt experience that there or havent yet learned how to appreciate what they lived there. HSFI is really about love.

This school is an absolute disgrace to all schools on Earth. There are unlicensed and inexperienced teachers giving actual classes to students and giving grades. The teachers dont help the students in the least bit. Teachers give overwhelming amounts of work without reason and assignments are never thoroughly explained. Some teachers grade students on things other than performance, effort, skill, attendance, work quality, ect.The school is absolutely FILTHY! The Janitors dont clean well at all.Students of all grades are rude, loud, disrespectful, and undisciplined. Its not a surprise since rules are never enforced because there are little to no consequences. Even if there are consequences, nobody keeps records of them which is why this school is highly rated. There are fights everyday and unless someone has to TELL a by-standing adult whats going on, nothing will be done.Students do drugs in every bathroom in the school. The hallways wreak of smoke and drugs everyday. Adults are disrespectful to students and to each other. There are rules about not dressing inappropriately but, nobody enforces them. So, I literally saw half-naked students everyday. I was able to see several students whole backs, fronts, butts, and breasts. Its absolutely disgusting and nobody cares. The furniture in the school is very very old. Some of the lab tables are dangerous. I see students accidentally kicking the tanks under them all the time. Its not a matter of watching out. It happens to EVERYONE, ALL THE TIME, EVERYDAY. It is a hazard and people have gotten deep cuts and bruises from it.Theres just so many things wrong with this horrible school, I cant list them all. Im not exaggerating when I say this is the WORST highschool in New York. I hate it so much and I hope it gets shut down.

My daughter is a freshman this year. She was very excited to be accepted to the school. I went with her the first two days of school, and I must say it was not quite what I was initially expecting. The school was small and hot. Some of the girls were dressed VERY provocatively, making me question the schools dress code. Also, I expected HSFI to be much more racially diverse, considering the specialized nature of the school. I would think students from all walks of life who are interested in fashion design, fashion business or any other fashion-related fields would be here, but the school appears to be 90% Black/latino. Im not stating this as a negative or a positive; just a curious observation that may be of particular interest to certain interested parties. An earlier comment noted the crowded elevators. I can vouch for this, as I rode the elevator with my daughter to her first class. There were 2 main elevator lobbies (consisting of 2 elevators) at opposite ends of the school, but one was reserved for staff. So all students had to cram into their designated elevators, making the environment especially uncomfortable and potentially hostile. Maybe thats just the first day of school though, which may well be the busiest day of the year. That said, the school does set out to prepare students for a future in fashion, in addition to a well-rounded general education. I was impressed with how open and approachable the principal was. He literally stood outside of the school to welcome the students at the start of the school day, and stood outside again at dismissal to wish them a safe journey home and ask if they had a good day. Of course, the majority of the kids simply whisked passed him without so much as a thank you or good-bye, but I found his dedication to the students to be impressive. I was also impressed by the curriculum set forth for my daughter on her first day. The fashion class jumps right in with the basics on Day One, asking the students what fashion means TO THEM, defining and drawing a croquis (new to me!) and progressing to fashion technology. I believe the fashion focus here is serious, and those students who really stick with this will be more than knowledgeable and prepared to begin designing the look of the future. The Fashion Institute of Technology (F.I.T.) is within walking distance of HSFI, and seems a logical next step for the students. Speaking of walking distance, the school is surrounded by eateries, vintage clothing shops, an art store, a computer retail/repair store, a gym, Starbucks, Duane Reade, a movie theater and loads of other places a first-time Manhattan student can experience after school (these can also be huge distractions to a wrong-minded student). My daughter considered transferring out next year, as she feels the school is a bit crowded and the demographic may make for for some potentially uncomfortable situations (she already witnessed one girl smoking weed in the bathroom, students cutting class and overall lewd and rude behavior. But hey, who didnt witness some or all of these things in their high school?). She has since considered giving the school a second chance. As a freshman, and her first time in the big city, theres lots to be wary of, for sure. Just like any new school or environment, we tend to notice and sometimes embellish what is unfamiliar or uncomfortable. But, I feel the school has a lot to offer; the fashion program seems top-notch, there are a diverse array of clubs and after school activities for the students, and its located in the best possible area, regionally, to begin your fashion education. As with almost anything, what you get out of the school depends on what you put in. If your child is seriously interested in fashion, The High School of Fashion Industries is well-equipped to satiate and nurture their interest.
