Ive taken private several lessons at The New York Sewing Center, and Ive been satisfied with all of my instructors. I did just that and now I have a lovely kaftan that fits me perfectly. If you want a group class, I am sure you will love it. Everyone is very kind. Great place to get a gift certificate for a special sewer in your life. The studio is immaculate, pretty, and the energy is wonderful because all the staff are outgoing and warm. Enjoy. Create. My daughter (14) took online lessons with the New York Sewing Center this summer. We bought her a sewing machine but I dont know how to use it. Her teacher, who was so nice, covered all the basics with her and helped her troubleshoot when there was a problem. Also, all the materials needed for projects were shipped to us within a day or two. She started out sewing a pillow cover, followed by a face mask, and by the end of summer, she made a nice pair of pants. We will definitely come back in the future.

As a middle age man I am probably not the typical student that enrolls in a sewing class but I am happy that I did. As a back achy and knee problem DIY home improvement guy I needed a new weekend hobby to occupy my time now that kids are out of the house. Wife suggested taking up sewing so I enrolled in this class and it was great. For any guy who wants to tinker with creating things and not breaking your back, try this sewing class, youll be glad you did.

Conveniently, located in the heart of what remains of the Garment District (so you can get your supplies easily and quickly before the session), the NYSC is a wonderful place to take sewing classes. The instruction is perfectly tailored to your level, the physical space is inspiring, and the machine layout encourages learners to learn from one another as well as the teacher. The beginner course is a great refresher for those of us who have learned and forgotten and then re-learned and forgotten the basics. And at a minimum you walk away with a sweet made-by-you drawstring pouch and a zippered pencil case. They even let busy New Yorkers make up a missed class because we all know something will come up. Schedule permitting, I will be taking another class once the year gets going to complete my 3rd project (the waistband and hem on a smart-ish chambray skirt), to deepen my knowledge of sewing techniques, get some pointers, and maybe finally make that boho beach top Ive been thinking about. Now if they cold only open up an adjacent knitting atelier...

I signed up to the taking the Centers Sewing 101 class. It was awesome. I learned so much on Day 1. Mary is an excellent teacher and though there is a curriculum, she happily answered any question I had about sewing, fabrics, pattern grading, and techniques. During 101 you learn how to sew a zipper, general sewing techniques, threading the machine and bobbin (honestly the most difficult part about learning how to sew), how to read a pattern, use a pattern, how to understand fabric grainlines, and you sew a garment. I made a wrap skirt and my classmate made some pants. You get a lot of hands on attention. I will definitely be signing up for another class. They offer such a wide array depending on what you want to learn which is super cool. I highly recommend it!

ta
Review №64

The sewing 101 class does not TEACH you anything or leave you with any skills. It just gives you some directions in class to work on a project and moves on to the next project. You will never have the time to digest anything and really learn how to SEW. Its was very misleading when they stated 101. Following directions in class isnt hard but leaving the place you will feel like you didnt learn anything. I truly think this is a terrible structure. Also once you get there you have to buy more supplies from THEM to continue the projects. When asked if I can get some help w/project she simply stated, we dont have the space for you to start your project here. I understand that, but if its 101 then they should give us projects they can accommodate to proceed in class. I dont think this place is for anyone expecting a 101 class. I think the staff was friendly but at the same time were not explaining in a way for us to remember anything, all the directions were towards a specific project and not LEARNING how to sew.

Ive been taking classes at NY Sewing Center on and off for over one year -- both private lessons with the owner (Kristine) and group classes. My experience has been uniformly excellent. The teachers are all professionals in the fashion industry and are very knowledgeable. Intermediate sewing 102 is the only sewing class Ive found in NYC where you can make exactly what you want (with help from an expert as needed) rather than having to make a garment/pattern selected by the school. Kristine is super flexible and has all sorts of great ideas about building a sewing community at the studio.

Last year, I took sewing 101 without any previous sewing experience. By the end of the class, I felt confident in making anything, after having sewn a draw string bag, a cosmetic zipper case, and pajama pants (the other option was a pencil skirt) in the class. Kristine and Erin , the instructors, were patient and gave lots of great feedback to ensure that each student knew what to do every step of the way. (The classes are very small!) We also learned how to use a pattern, which has since allowed me to make many other pieces of clothing.I was so impressed with this class that a year later, I brought my own students to the school. (Im a school teacher.) My school-age students had never touched a machine, and yet, by the end of the sewing boot-camp, they had made several items, like a tote bag and pencil case. They loved Kristine and felt very at ease with the machine because of her teaching. I cant recommend the New York Sewing Center and its teachers enough! They are all wonderful.
