ICU physician and former student of Karate(NOT at this Dojo). I was super excited to be able to restart my journey, especially after such a hard year. I made an appointment for a walk through. I was asked to remove my mask the moment I finished filling in my intake form. The sensei told me about how I was breathing in my CO2, not getting enough oxygen and that would affect my brain if I wore a mask too long. I tried to explain to him that I have an unvaccinated kid, have asthma and even though Ive had 2 vaccine doses, I would rather not take a chance. It was getting uncomfortable to listen to, but I love Karate, and just wanted to see the dojo. He said I should go elsewhere, did not even complete the tour I was scheduled for. Essentially kicked out for not taking off my mask before an unmasked guy standing 3 feet away from me.Im sorry( not sorry); I run around an ICU for 24-30 hr shifts in an N95 for a living, Im pretty sure 20 mins of walking around your dojo in a plain face mask will not knock me down cold. Anyways, it was entertaining watching him trying to explain the philosophy and the science behind it.Dojos are supposed to be empowering, And here I was, listening to a condescending guy, ridiculing my respect for my life. I was speechless. I could not believe the philosophy he was pushing, even as we brace for the delta variant in NY. I felt threatened and disrespected. No student of Karate should EVER have to bear this. This is not the respect a sensei would afford his student.I am supremely disappointed.

They do not seem to follow any CDC protocols—No hand sanitizer or temperature checks. They wouldnt allow any mask wearing in class even though our daughter felt more comfortable with it on. As an essential worker, their rational for the lack of protocols seemed reckless and irresponsible. If they cut corners in this area and bend the rules, they probably bend other rules as well. They lost our trust. As such, we will take our business elsewhere. They didnt seem to care.

Huge dojo with an amazing Sensei and great instructors and staff. I train here and my daughter also just started in one of the kids divisions. What I like is that I was a total beginner and felt completely at home here .... everyone made me feel welcome, especially the other students.Sensei has written books about karate and is both an expert and a great teacher .... Best class is endurance and any general class with sensei.

Great place to train .... The dojo is spotless, airy and has great light and is huge. Most important though, sensei is an incredible teacher.

The best karate dojo where valued traditional both Okinawian an Japaneese karate schools traditions, philosophy, style, customs that help develop really authentic spirit of Budo, strong confident character which is indispensible in achieving ones life goals. Amazingly charizmatic Sensei Michael coaches and teaches every aspect of karatedo: spirit, mind, body which is very rare in modern dojos nowadays.

Wonderful martial arts school with amazing instruction and a good range of classes.I take adult classes and find them challenging, fun, and really interesting. Im often challenged mentally as much as Im challenged physically! There are also kids classes and they seem every bit as good as the classes i take as an adult.

Easily the best martial arts school (dojo) in NYC --- and believe me Ive tried a lot of them..The most important reason to train here is Sensei .... The classes are challenging physically and mentally and he keeps me wanting to train. Plus the depth of knowledge and expertise here is insanely great. The dojo itself is not only immaculate and clean (anyone who has visited or studied elsewhere can tell you how rare that is) but the school is a non-profit and the tuition For unlimited classes is a bargain.

I’ve increased my self confidence and physical fitness while learning to better defend myself and get an outstanding workout. Need a challenge? Take endurance class every week 😉 Sensei obviously has a deep and broad knowledge of karatedo; he generously shares his time, knowledge, and encouragement with his students. I also appreciate that they stock both traditional and low carb snack options!
