Dario is an assistant coach here who referred me to this location and spoke highly about it. There was quick and efficient communication. I was hesitant for my son to try this. He had an intro session on the basics before going into a class session. Tim(coach) was amazing and met him at his level and encouraged him, validated his emotions(nervous) and gave constructive feedback in a way kids can understand. Both Dario and Tim motivate the kids during the session, and get them to strive to do their best. Worth the 25 min drive! * Margo

Max McGarr is one of those Renoz Gracie and John Danaher black belts you don’t hear about for he is not one to self promote on social media. You will get excellent technical instruction that has been passed down from the mouths of living legends of the sport. Reno is lucky to have him and anyone walking through those doors will find out they are too.

As an out-of-towner, I had the opportunity to join Renzo Gracie Academy Reno for an open mat session this past weekend (actually, 8 us from our Jiu Jitsu club went). The facility is clean, the layout is great, with plenty of mat space, and the mats were excellent. The owner, Max McGarr, was incredibly gracious, welcoming and respectful. He has done a wonderful job infusing this same spirit throughout his gym. Every member of his team was just as welcoming, kind and all had GREAT Jiu Jitsu skill & control from the white-belts to the black-belts. This, in my opinion, is what happens when you are building a true environment for learning and success... skill level is clearly noticeable & respect for your fellow participants is put the forefront, as you understand that you all there to help each other to learn and improve. Our team spend hours (literally hours) raving about the amazing time spent in Maxs gym and we will absolutely go back when we are back in the area in a few months.I highly recommend that anyone looking for a great workout and environment in Reno spend the time to visit Renzo Gracie Academy Reno!!

This place is awesome we started taking my son here because it was recommended to help him with his confidence and a bullying situation, Im astounded by how much its helped my son already. The coaches have complete control of the class no matter how many children show up and the kids learn valuable skills and have fun at the same time. We are so happy to be part of the Renzo Gracie Family, you guys are so awesome!!! Thankyou for everything!!!

As a high school teacher, I am very critical of others who teach. No matter what you are teaching, you need to be attentive to detail and know your students to meet their needs. Max does both of those things very well. He pays attention and corrects bad habits. In a game where every detail matters, this is a strong suit of his teaching style. I cannot stress the importance of this teaching trait enough. My game has taken off since starting training with Max.In addition to the great instruction from Max, Stephanie is also a great resource for all sorts of matters. She has provided me some insightful advice when it comes to skin care and injury rehab tools. She’s also well connected, so she probably knows someone if you’re ever in need of referrals.

RG Reno is not a spot to pass up if youre interested in martial arts for self-defense, sport, fitness, or are just looking for a new activity/hobby and great atmosphere. Max has been teaching classes at Renzo Gracie Academy headquarters in NYC for years. Ive had the pleasure of studying under him and can say with conviction and without hesitation that Renos lucky to have him. Max has a welcoming persona and is a master of technique, able to break down world class martial arts concepts and relay them in an easy to grasp manner that allows even an uncoordinated, un-athletic individual such as myself to execute them. Dont pass this up!

I was obviously nervous about this new fitness adventure but the owners Stephanie and Max were super welcoming and made the whole experience fun and motivating.Im now down several pounds, my cardio is better and Im having a ton of fun!Regardless if you are already an established Jiu Jitsu practitioner or brand new to he sport I couldnt recommend this place more.

Renzo Gracie Reno is hands down the best place to train brazilian jiu jitsu (BJJ) in Reno. Max the head instructor and owner is extremely knowledgeable and a great guy. In opening this school, hes brought high-level jiujitsu knowledge to the Reno area from one of the most respected jiujitsu schools in the country. In my time training at Renzo Ive seen absolutely everyone get treated with respect. No crazy egos, no culture of picking on the new guys. The fundamentals classes allow people with zero experience to start learning jiujitsu, without feeling completely overwhelmed.Life is busy and with family its sometimes really hard to take the time to go to classes after work or on the weekends. One of the things that initially drew me to Renzo was that they were (and maybe still) the only BJJ school in Reno that offers morning classes that I can fit in before going to work. With morning classes theres no excuses for not training (besides getting extra sleep). Tim who leads the kids and teens program, teaches the morning adult classes. He keeps things fun, but also brings to the class a lot of knowledge from years of training and competing in BJJ competitions. With any physical activity theres risks of injury, but with pre-workout conditioning exercises and post-workout stretching I feel that my body is healthier and less prone to getting hurt. On top of feeling stronger, Ive also shed some of the extra beer weight that I had been keeping around. The culture of the gym is professional, while also being friendly and approachable. The facility is new and clean with a great stained wood meets sleek and modern vibe. All the little touches make this a place where you want to come in and train. While theres other gyms closer to where I live in Sparks, I feel that the quality of training at Renzo is worth making the drive across town.

Sure, the place is clean. Yes, there is plenty of brand new fuji designed mat space. Its well appointed layout allows lots of natural light, and there is a changing room with lockers and a bunch of wooden cubbies for gear storage. These features are nice, but thats not where the REAL value lies in RGA Reno. The head instructor comes from RGA New York: arguably the top academy in the country. He trained and coached there for 15 years and produced countless high level jiujitsu practitioners. The system that Max McGarr teaches is well thought out from beginning to end. The concepts and progressions of movements are taught safely and fit well together. The material presented to students is well curated, appropriate to their level and administered by a focused and present coach.see past the awesome facility and check out Renzo Gracie Academy Reno

I have had the opportunity to train at Renzo Gracie Reno with Professor Max McGarr for a little over three months now and I could not be happier with my experience. There is a strong emphasis on safety which allows us to train takedowns and leg locks daily in the advanced program(take downs and leg locks are widely viewed as the most dangerous aspect of JiuJitsu). Max teaches the subject matter in a clear and concise way which has allowed my JiuJitsu to grow. Every class no matter how packed, Max always makes time to help every student with the techniques(it feels like he is my personal coach and that’s how he treats all of his students:)Vince Barbarossa is the assistant professor and his block of instructions on JiuJitsu and advice on how to be a functional athlete are second to none.My nephews had the opportunity to train in the kids program with Tim Principe this summer for a month while they were visiting and they fell in love with JIUJITSU while having a blast doing it.Stephanie McGarr(Max’s wife:) is the owner and administrative person who will become your point of contact to help you join(she is also the nicest & coolest person you’ll meet:).There is something special going on at RGR and I am happy to be apart of it. Weather you are new to Brazilian JiuJitsu or an advanced student I highly recommend you come take advantage of the trial class that gets offered and see for yourself.Respectfully, Matthew L
