Great gym and great people! Andrew Kochel is one of the best competitors and instructors out there and anyone who gets to train with him on a daily basis is guaranteed to become a monster on the mat!

Very hospitable environment. Instructors promote a safe and friendly learning environment for students at any skill level. If youre interested in competition, theres a team that competes in the grappling tournament scene. They offer kids classes as well and my eight year old daughter loves it. Whether for hobby or sport, its a great place and a great group of folks.

Went in unsure of what to think at first, to the wrong location listed by googled as Broad Street (as opposed to the new location at Penn Drive). The instructors are amazing and accepting of all skill levels. They know their stuff and the overall atmosphere is very supportive. It’s incredibly common for new people to show up and try some trial classes with no experience, and they’re integrated into the lesson. The space itself is somewhat small at a first glance ~ but works wonderfully and always seems to somehow accommodate everyone in a tight knit family like atmosphere.Overall I highly recommend Valley Jiu Jitsu for any and everyone, with plenty of options offered from nogi classes to fundamentals, wrestling, and children’s classes.

The below review is so false and unfortante. The review was made based on personal interest to promote E4 bjj school and bash the current instructor at valley due to personal issues outside the gym walls.I am a purple belt female grappler and competitor who has been training with Valley Jiu-jitsu from my beginning blue belt stages to my current purple belt which equals about 4 years. I love the environment and it is competitive atmosphere due to majority of the gym competing in local tournaments. The environment is very friendly and rarely any injuries occur. If your caught you are taught to tap. The schedule changes often due to the seasons and a positive student growth. Our music is respectable because we have CrossFit neighbors who are coaching throughout classes. Our mats are cleaned everyday after every training session with a vacuum and wet mop, with antibacterial soap. I have been training for four years and have never had a skin infection at valley. We make sure our team is excepting of everyone that walks through the door and have many grapplers come from schools in our surrounding area. It’s an open door mantality. We do share a close bond so friendly exchanges do occur but let’s be honest this is the jiu-jitsu world. We trash each other in fun family ways, always slap-bump and end with a hug after all rolls. Now our instructors are the best thing about this gym.My name is Sam Fisher. I help teach the kids class which in my life. I am going to school to be a pediatric nurse so they are my everything. I want them to be the best they can be and push their limits through technique and deamonor on and off the mat. I also compete on a regular basis against a lot of female grapplers.Andrew kochel is arguably the best grappler in the area. His technique works if you show up and put your heart in it. He’s a brown belt moving to black soon. He is very humble and super friendly. He will have your back and sees no belt colors. He also competes on a day-to-day basis.Brent Yoder is a brown belt. His wrestling background and bjj game makes him a great asset in the gym. His gi game is strong and he loves teaching the class. When he teaches he breaks the technique down into fundalmenatal understandable moves.Shawn is our wrestling coach which aids us in our standup game on Mondays which is must needed since matches in tournaments start on our feet.Patrick McElderry is a current black belt under Daniel Belaza and Daniel Taveraz which are legit competitors and all-around grapplers. Patrick is strict and pushes his students to be apart of the gym and continue their journey in bjj. He competes as well in numerous tournaments throughout the year. His technique is current and basic-advance friendly and are all relevant to real-life scenarios as well as competitions. Our group of men and women grapplers here are very supportive and want to see you complete the journey. I think it’s fair to say that you should come and see us for yourself. OSS!

I trained at Valley Jiu Jitsu for 2 years; I changed schools when another one came into the area. I decided to write a review of Valley because most of the reviews on Google and Facebook are by people who never trained there regularly, so I thought it would be helpful for prospective students to read an honest review.Pros:Their price is in line with nearby schools. There are 2 excellent instructors (Andrew and Brent).Cons:The training schedule often changes drastically. Gi jiu jitsu is always the least offered class. This could be a pro if you like a variety of training and have a flexible schedule. If not, you might join to train gi Mon/Wed and then those classes turn into kickboxing or wrestling. There are also a lot of last minute changes. Youll come in for a gi class and it will be only nogi rolling. Or class will start 30+ min late. At least 5x, I showed up for class and there was no instructor at all.Its a small place in the front of a warehouse; training is tight and crowded and its freezing in the winter and extremely hot in the summer. Cleanliness is OK.There is no curriculum. Concepts are taught randomly, which makes it difficult for new members to put things together. Typically, the instructor will come in and ask what do you want to learn today? The problem with that is that new students dont know what they want to/ should learn, so youll end up doing a bunch of random things. The main instructor/owner is a terrible teacher. If you are struggling with a concept, he just repeats himself louder and then eventually gives up and just teases you for not understanding. Fortunately, everyone is in the same boat, so they help each other figure things out. They play very loud music. Its annoying and I witnessed many times that someone verbally tapped and their partner couldnt hear them and kept going. Coupled with the fact that the instructor doesnt oversee rolling (which I also consider a negative), this is a safety concern. Some people get their stripes or belt in class for free and some people have to pay to test. Obviously that causes issues when some people have to give up a long, hard day of testing (and $50) to get beat up for a stripe and then someone else gets it in class. Theres also a lot of pressure to make other purchases. You will be pressured to buy shirts, rash guards, shorts, tickets, etc. Also, if you join Valley, I would recommend that you not put your card on file to autopay. You can cancel your membership at any time, but it took 3 months for them to stop billing me. They did reimburse me the overpaid fees, but it was a common issue, so avoid the hassle. The biggest con at Valley was the college-fraternity-like culture. There is a genuine camaraderie among the members and it is casual and laid back, but theres a lot of teasing, trash talking, ego, competition, etc. It isnt in a mean way, but it is an immature and deprecating atmosphere and, for a lot of people, its just not a positive environment. One member quit because he was just sick of being made fun of. Several other members quit simply due to constant drama. The one owner/instructor who trains at the gym is the biggest offender. This teasing and ribbing causes the guys to train HARD because they just dont want to tap to each other. Typically, I wouldnt call hard training a con, but it goes beyond intense into unsafe. I have seen a number of injuries and one time someone was choked unconscious to the point of losing bladder control on the mat. Of course, youre always going to see injuries in contact sports, but I feel there were a lot that could have been prevented. In line with the frat house atmosphere, Valley is not a female friendly gym. You will get hit on the minute you walk in the door and there are a number of guys who will just flat out refuse to work with you. You may get groped, be asked inappropriate questions or be walked in on when changing. Jiu jitsu is male dominated in general, but Valley definitely struggles to retain women. And there is a legitimate reason for that.
