My grandson Ryan has been a student at Asheville Academy of Taekwondo since November 2017. I have attended nearly all of his practices, all his colored belt testings, and all his tournament participation’s. I participated in high school and college athletics and coached at the middle school and youth levels. I have a lot of experience to draw from in my observations of Master Richard Tener, his facility, and all the highly qualified students, youth and adult, who share with him in the instructon at his school. Everything is both age and skill level appropriate, and there there is an actively participating adult at all times. In every practice there are moments when Ryan has the individualized attention of an instructor demonstrating what he needs to do next and how to do it. He learns complicated sets of Taekwondo techniques called forms for each colored belt level. He participates in sparring with other students while wearing lots of protective gear while only allowed light contact. There are three strategically placed referees to penalize excessive contact. I sit in the observer section fascinated by it all, and I get to see my grandson grow right before my eyes.Ryan is pumped when he enters practice. He has developed intense focus, an appreciation for effort, and he is very active physically. He wants to get stronger, and he is. He has stated the other students and instructors are part of his “family.” Everyone watches out for one another. As for his parents and me, I think Ryan likes being the family expert at Taekwondo and meeting his own expectations. Recently, Ryan achieved the very beginning level of black belt training and went to a black belt only tournament. He had been prepared thoroughly and was fortunate enough to be selected to demonstrate a complicated form alone on a big mat before three expert judges, including the American founder of Taekwondo. The audience was 6all black belts who knew what it was supposed to look like. I asked Ryan on the way home what was his favorite moment of the tournament? He said, “When all the eyes were on me. I was nervous, but I was prepared. I just went out and did it!” It was a victory for the entire school. What else could you ask?PS I just had Ryan look at this. I said I was giving 5 stars. He said, “Oh yeah, definitely!”

This is a fantastic school for those beginning their journey in Taekwondo. They not only care about you as a student but also as a person and make you feel as part of a family. Keep up the good work!

I highly encourage anyone interested in doing martial arts to look into this school. I grew up with this Academy and signing me up for this school was probably the best thing my mother did for me.

He is awful. Gave up on my granddaughter. He is for the people with money. Because she has ADHD he wouldnt teach her. This place doesnt practice the tenants at all.But now she goes to a better class and is progressing well. Hate this place. If you have money then you will be fine here. But us poor folks he looks down on and gets you to quit.

I’ve loved taking classes here. I joined this past year and everyone at Asheville Academy of Tae Kwan Do has welcomed me in. It already feels like a real community for me. Everyone is very kind and friendly. AATKD is serious about TKD while still being fun and giving a rejuvenating workout. So grateful for this place!

My son and I joined the Asheville Academy of Taekwondo 3 years ago. This school has a family spirit and offer a lot of personal growth for kids and adults in a safe and friendly environment. It is just challenging enough for mental and physical growth but never more than one can handle. I am getting much more fun than any fitness club I have been to. Master Tener Owner , Alex Jones, Chief Instructor and all the other great instructors are ALWAYS here to help and very patient with their teaching. I love that school and all the very good friends I made there. I highly recommend that Taekwondo school to anybody who wants to get healthier and feel good while having fun.

We moved to the area about a year ago, and my then 13 year old daughter was very sad about leaving her taekwondo home. After visiting several taekwondo academies in the area, my daughter completely fell for this place and so did I! Master Tener is awesome with the kids- so helpful and patient, and teaches them lessons that are valuable in all aspects of their lives. Also small class sizes ensure that everyone gets the attention and help they need. I cant speak enough great things about this place! Love it!!
