Today was my first time here and I really loved how nice and professional they are. I had a facial with Sauna and she is great. The lady in the front desk( sorry I forgot her name) is so nice. I’m very satisfied with their services. My face was glowing when I left. I’m definitely going back for more services and I’m even considering to come study here. Thanks Sauna and everyone. God bless.

I appreciated that care was taken with my hair. I requested the works for my hair--color, sew in taken out and a press. I had to wait quite a while but I know it was in the interest of being careful with my hair.

I called today at 10:30 am . The website says they don’t open untill 10:15am . The girl said they only take walk ins . ITS 11:18 am as I am here and the girl tells me they are done doing cuts for the day . Lol the day hasn’t started . And they don’t close untill 2pm . This place went down hill. I use to love coming here years ago . Unfortunately I will not be returning.

As someone who looks for a great deal with great service, I was happy to find this beauty school. I go to this salon school to have my hair styled. I have often left the salon happy about my experience. Everyone gives me compliments about my hair all the time. Talented students work here. I recommend going to salon to meet your beauty needs.

Ms Nikki, I am very pleased with this beauty school and the young hair stylist. She did a superb job.I loved the way you interacted with your students. You gave them clear and precise instructions to follow. This showed me how concerned you were for your clients as well as your students. Thanks for your service!

I have been coming for 3 years as a client and have never had a bad experience. As a cosmetologist myself, I come to treat myself, and I highly recommend them. Try them once, and you WILL come back.Mrs. Lisa

I purchased a 60 minute facial and it was absolutely amazing. Its worth the price. The student esthetician was very knowledgeable and made sure I felt at ease and comfortable. The room was tranquil and relaxing away from the rest of the school/salon. However, when I arrived, although the front desk attendant was very sweet, the appointment I booked in advance was not registered on their books. Another customer that came two minutes behind me was also missing their appointment slot as well. The hands on work was great but appointments should be taken seriously and handled professionally.

I went to New Directions Beauty Institute to get a full acrylic set with the intention that I knew it was a beauty school. However, the student I had was quite unprofessional at times. She told me 15 minutes into starting that I was the first person she ever worked on and her nerves got the best of her. First she couldnt find the right acrylics to apply it with so all of them were mismatched plus french tips, which I didnt want but I went along with it since I was getting polish over top of them. The application itself from start to finish was 4 hours...and I am not exaggerating. Luckily, I had time on my hands and I wanted to see if she could at least finish. She often would complain and hope her instructors could complete her task rather than her because she claimed, several times, she didnt feel comfortable doing them. In the end, they looked very pretty but they last 6 days eventually one by one coming off. From far away they looked nice but up close and underneath were half applied nails not even completely attached to my nail. Its a nice facility, but make sure you go with an instructor if you want professional services. My student was supposed to be the top student and if I was grading her I wouldve gave her a C-.

So Ive been coming to NDBI Since 2013 and so far my experiences have been good and bad. There has been times when I would ask for a flat iron/ press silk or even a relaxer and the students would Take up to 5-6 hours just to finish my hair and the instructor would come and help them speed up the process. I understand that its a school but thats a place where you build clientele and you have to be trained to at least know you have to give the clients what they paid for And at least be mindful that there are eyes and ears everywhere so you have to be careful with what you say and how you say it. I asked for a relaxer retouch and a haircut with a pin curl today and the lady who did it was nice and very professional at first but she made it well know that she was hungry and had a bad headache..I told her to take a break but she Said she was good. So when she was finished I thought the style was cute but I wanted a pin curl and she told me they dont do that ..long story short I left feeling like I didnt necessarily get what I asked and like my voice wasnt being heard and the instructors didnt really have my back when I said the last time the other girl actually used the pins on my hair and everyone was just standing there in awkward silence as the girl (doing my hair) told me shes not the other girl when it comes to pin curling my hair. When I first came to this place I was happy and felt like Im finally going to be able to find nice people who can do my hair and know what theyre doing but as always I come to this place because its close to home and they are reasonable with their prices but after today I feel like my money and service is taken for granted.

I have never in my life written a bad review. But here I am beyond bewildered with the out folding of this day. I went in this morning, beyond excited to learn more about the programs they offer as I’ve been braiding hair of all textures and length since I was very young. I was excited to finally find a braiding school actually near me as there are only two in Ohio so that I could get my license. Ima not even talk bout everyone’s attitudes ima just cut to the chase. As I was speaking with Mrs. Adams I was told that I probably wouldn’t be accepted because I had been homeschooled and that the state wouldn’t recognize me nor would federal aid. I told her I had already been accepted for federal aid and that my transcript followed state laws of education and was notarized. She snapped at me to tell me all the schools were different. I stayed being nice, but all I could think was don’t blame your schools policy on the state or federal aid because both recognize my education as they should just not yall. I’d also like to add, colleges have already accepted my transcripts as this ain’t my first time going to the Rhode. We finished the conversation and she asks me to send the transcript so she’ll know for sure, I thought surely surely it will be good because there is literally no reason it shouldn’t have.Later Mrs. ADAMS! Calls me saying it wasn’t accepted by her because she “KNEW” it wouldn’t be accepted by federal aid or state (although it is and has been mind you) I tried to ask her more into why they wouldn’t she replied with “well this is what Uhm most homeschooled people do” (she said homeschooled with a sound in her voice) “all you do is go and buy some paper or whatever and the parents write up the transcript and get it notarized”I told her there was nothing wrong with someone doing those things as long as the education meet state law requirements for education. That yes my parents write it because they taught me and provided the books just like any other teachers. Mrs. Adams continued to talk to me like I was an idiot without sense, then repeat that I would need to get a ged. I do not have a problem with getting a GED other than the fact that no other colleges are going to make someone get a GED when they have a perfectly legible high school Transcript. All in all, she continued to blame it on federal aid (which I have already been accepted for) and the state (which again recognizes anything meeting state laws) when clearly it was her and the schools issue.I was beyond disrespected here, Y’all really one of the only two natural hair school in Ohio and you’re running yourself like trash.

***CONTINUED FROM LAST POST*** While Kia was going through my hair, Nicole came around barely pretending to care and said “we’re going to get you another stylist to finish your hair ok?”; and again I was relieved because I thought she was talking about kia, but when Nicole left, Kia sent me to Suni- another person who clearly doesn’t “deal with” my hair texture- and that’s when my situation became even more unpleasant. Kia told her to put water and oil in my hair before blow drying, and even though I reminded her what Kia said several times because she was doing her own thing, she blow dried my hair (after yanking and ripping through my hair as well) with no product, THEN put oil on my hair after being blow dried. Not only that, when she put the oil on top of my hair, she literally slapped my head so hard, that I literally turned my head to look at her like “what happened? What was that for?” and she responded “you need to look straight”.Suni was intentionally abusing my hair and my hair was still tangled right after she blow dried it because she didn’t blow dry it properly. When I went to the bathroom to twist my hair in sections, my hair broke and fell in clumps every single time I touched it. Suni caught me in the bathroom and tried to make small talk because she knew what she did and she didn’t want me to report her, but I did anyway.I asked for Nicole to express my disappointment in the way that I was treated at the salon; and again she couldn’t be bothered, so she sent kia to speak to me. When I explained (while still shaken up) the situation to her, she gave me a dry “oh no, I didn’t know she did all that”, and then said “I’ll talk to the stylists later.” I asked her why she paired me up with two stylists who clearly didn’t have experience with my hair texture and she said that it was because she wanted them to learn how to do all textures. Understandable, but if she or Nicole knew that they didn’t have experience working with my hair texture, either one of them should have supervised them like they supervised everyone else (and also as stated on the website). The mishandling of my hair from the stylists and the seemingly intentional neglect by Nicole made me start wondering if there was intent to ruin my hair. Every time I twist or style my hair now, I can see and feel how thin and damaged some sections of my hair are, and I’m constantly regretting stepping foot in that salon. Nicole and the stylists of New Directions are shady people who lack integrity.

Disclaimer: This post is long.I’m not the type to go online and write bad reviews every time I get bad service because I usually don’t have the time, and I’m weary about posting negative things about people online- even if it’s warranted. However, as I’m twisting my what used to be long, thick, healthy and beautiful 4b natural hair, I’m getting angrier and angrier; and it’s been a couple of days since my unfortunate experience at New Directions Beauty Institute.I came in Thursday morning for a shampoo/deep condition and blow dry. I go to a salon once a month because I just want one week out of the month where I’m not going through the whole process of washing, detangling, deep conditioning and styling my hair myself. Unfortunately, the stylist that I usually go to was sick so I found New Directions with a quick google search on “natural hair services”.A week before walking in, I called the salon and specifically asked Nicole if her stylists knew how to do natural hair and she assured me they did. When I walked in, the energy was off with several of the employees; but being the naturally optimistic person that I am, I ignored it and was still looking forward to getting my hair done. Maybe I should’ve seen that as a sign and went elsewhere.I was sent an asian (I think?) stylist to do my hair; and to be honest, my gut reaction or emotion was worry because not too many people know what to do with 4b natural hair, but right before moving to Columbus, I did have an asian stylist do her thing with my hair at a previous salon that I went to, so that feeling disappeared quickly. When the stylist washed and deep conditioned my hair, she did not detangle once during that whole process; and every natural reading this knows what happens when she neglects to detangle while washing. Unfortunately, I didn’t say anything because I didn’t want to be the one to tell a stylist how to do her job, and I thought that she’s a different stylist so her process would probably be different as well. After washing, she takes a small tooth comb and starts raking through my hair even though my hair wasn’t detangled; and instead of untangling the tangles that SHE created, she literally breaks my hair apart. After doing that a couple of times, I gently told her “please be gentle with my hair; I’m not sure if you’re used to my hair texture, but it has to be detangled first before blow drying.”, and she responded “I got you.”She did the same exact thing several times to my hair and the whole time, Nicole was walking around supervising other stylists with clients; but when she saw the worried look on my face, she literally avoided eye contact and walked past me like I wasn’t even there. At one point, the way the stylist was mishandling my hair was too much and I calmly said “excuse me” and got up to find Nicole. After walking around the salon looking for her, Kia asked if I needed something, and I explained to her what was going on. She followed me to my chair and explained to the stylist that my hair needed to be detangled first before blow drying and I sat with relief because I thought that Kia would either supervise the stylist while she’s doing my hair, or that Kia would actually finish my hair herself. ***CONTINUED ON NEXT POST so I dont exceed the character limit***.
