Amazing atmosphere to train in. Surely the best in Medellin! Highly recommend this room for anyone at any level to attend. Whether youre new to the game or are rolling competitively, this room is packed with respectful practitioners and competitors willing to give a hand or exchange tough rolls. At the time of visiting the gym, I was very excited to learn the particular techniques being shown at Cobrinhas academy. Surprisingly the friendly gesture at the front desk had me smiling on the way up to the mats, where was welcomed by their head instructor Yiyo Moussa and soon found out the level of jiu-jitsu being taught here was nothing short of special. Professor Moussa has a deep understanding for the art and was very helpful with all of us throughout the technique session of the training session.Very appreciative of the opportunity to come back, Hope whomever is reading this gets a chance to head out there and roll! I found Cobrinha Jiu-Jitsu through a business connection who spoke very highly of it, having trained there for over 10 years and wanted to try it out. It was very easy to sign up for 2 free classes online and try the club out before joining. The staff are very friendly and all the other students made me feel welcome right away. It is a really great workout, and there is a lot of focus on core and neck strength since you are grappling so spend a lot of time on the mat. I have done 4 classes so far and have really really enjoyed them all. I would highly recommend trying it out.

Wonderful, clean and welcoming facility. Im only able to attend the competition classes, and they are exactly the way you would imagine; competitive! All of the regular student-athletes who train there are very down to earth and easy to get along with, all thanks to the leadership of Cobrinha himself. His high standard for conduct and expectations are felt throughout all of the activities, from the instruction down to the rolling. He and his staff have changed my life for the better, from diet and exercise to goal setting and getting my own business and life in order. A remarkable place, with remarkable people. Ive trained here since they opened their doors and have never looked back.

Amazing gym and great training. Came in for a morning session while visiting LA and got in some rounds. Sadly, Cobrinha was away but the class was led by one of his black belts. My only, slightly negative, criticism was the price. I was charged $60 for a day pass. There was no option to just do one session. This seems a bit high. With that said, I was at a world class gym :)

This gym is amazing. Regarding the few negative reviews I couldn’t help but read, they must be confusing this place with another gym. From the beginning I haven’t experienced anything but positivity from Cobrinha, his black belts, and his desk staff. In class, the instruction is amazing and you not only have Cobrinha teaching but other instructors helping to spot check in the event you are getting something wrong and it’s incredibly helpful (cheers to Fabio and Kennedy!). Even in the fundamentals classes you will have students of all levels taking the class and I have rolled with nothing but respectful and helpful people at this school.I am active duty Military and have had to go long bursts of time without being able to come in and train (and sat out for some time with an injury I incurred training around town) and the desk staff has been incred Understanding with my schedule and readily available to answer emails.Nothing but great things to say about this gym. Terrible experience with this place. Of the many issues the biggest are:1. The crazy price point. When you sign, you agree to pay a minimum $2,700 for a one year membership (thats the price for 2 classes a week). That includes an initiation fee and a one year contract. Why both? They dont explain this to you when you sign. They tell you about your monthly cost, but they dont tell you youre signing for a year.2. They are extremely inflexible with make-ups if you miss one class that week, its gone. I pay for three a week and if I happen to be working or sick that week, my money (approximately $75 per week) goes down the toilet. The customer service (headed by Cobrinhas wife) is bad and unaccommodating in general.3. The price point made sense when I first joined. Cobrinha was a full-time instructor. Since then, classes have gone up in price while Cobra has opened 10 other schools around the globe. Between those other schools and seminars that he does at Alliance affiliates, he hardly teaches here anymore. Youre paying a premium for a name. Theres plenty of other great schools in LA that are WAY cheaper and have comparable instructors.4. All in all, this place has gone from being all about the students to all about the money. I have had plenty of friends who were injured during roll-sessions and not refunded their money or given the chance to pause their contract.Dont come here.

I cant express enough my appreciate and gratitude for the entire Cobrinha family. This is truly an amazing place. So much care and concern for each other. Amazing training. Great students to train with and learn from. I am relatively early in my Jiu-jitsu journey. Starting approximately 3 years ago, as a white belt, now a blue belt. I have done 7 tournaments in the last year. With my latest tournament taking place this past weekend. As an example, Peter a brown belt approached me to help me warm up and prepare for my match. I have to admit I dont know him very well, but he helped me anyway. This was after he already competed and he probably would have much rather been relaxing in the stands watching other matches. But he was there for me, like a brother. This is how everyone is at Cobrinha. Always willing to help and support. I had a similar experience at Masters Worlds. So many people being supportive. In fact, every tournament i had done I have been helped by someone from Cobrinhas. The positive energy and truly supportive environment has helped me in so many ways beyond simply learning Jiu-Jitsu. I feel like I am a better person in all aspects of my life thanks to everyone at Cobrinha. Thanks everyone!Update: June 30th, 2020: Cobrinha and crew has helped me and so many of us remain positive and focused during Covid. The online Zoom classes certainly made a difference. It was great to be able to connect virtually with everyone and continue to advance in our skills. Everyone at Cobrinhas remains an inspiration to me! Thanks.

Life is a beautiful struggle. And so is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. I’m so blessed to live a block away from Cobrinha’s school. I am a father, a husband, a boxer and I write for a living. I also battle depression, anxiety and I deal with anger issues. I’ve been boxing for 10 years and I’m in pretty good shape. But I was intimidated by Jiu-Jitsu. I am in my late 40’s and I was scared I was starting too late. But I was done with the fear so I jumped in!Thank God I did! I have only been training at Cobrinha’s for a month and I can already feel the benefits to both my body and mind. I love journeys that never end, journeys where the learning never stops. I love being a student and knowing there is so much to discover. I love pushing my limits. I love being rewarded after consistent, hard work. Enough about me though...This school is amazing! Cobrinha (he’s been called the Michael Jordan of BJJ btw) himself is always there and his kindness and generosity are obviously his true skills. All of his teachers share this with him - his son, Kennedy, Professor Fabio and all the purple belt teachers. They make you feel welcome. They make you feel safe. So, this gym is weird and they let their favorite people be rude to others. The new girl, from Mexico, who came here to train was extremely rude to me one day and the instructor didn’t do anything about it, he just let her yell at me in class, probably because she is one of Cobrinhas future champions. We had a substitute instructor and he taught us to do one of the warm up moves that we do frequently. I was doing the move the way I thought we had been doing it the whole time, but maybe this instructor was teaching a variation on it that I missed or something. Either way, as I was going down the mat doing the move with my partner, half way through she had finished and she said, “You’re doing it wrong!” Then I did it again and she repeated herself, getting louder and nastier in her tone every time. Since the instructor didn’t say anything, I started responding and said “Thank you” every time she yelled at me. Literally every time I did it she yelled, but the instructor never said anything, didn’t confirm if I was doing it right or wrong. He just let her yell at me.This gym lets their favorites be rude to people and treat the regular people like garbage.

Students skills range from beginner to world champions. Cobrinha and Dani maintain a great culture on and off the mat at the gym and they will make you feel at home. The mats are some of the cleanest Ive ever seen at a BJJ school. There are 2 showers for the men and one for the women. The schedule is insane! Im not the review kind of guy. However, since Ive been training here for slightly over a year now and couldnt be happier with Cobrinha BJJ, I felt compelled to write a review to share my experience but also to address some of the points raised by other reviews I think are unfair.Firstly, I need to say I ended up here complete by accident as my concerns in picking a gym was convenience, schedule flexibility (e.g. class hours and times) and affordability. Basically I walked in here completely unaware of the fact that Cobrinha was an absolute legend in the sport and honestly thought before I started the guys has his name on the wall but probably is never around. Well, I couldnt be more wrong as Cobrinha teaches most of the classes, even the most fundamental ones, and took me only a few classes to realize how passionate he is about the sport. When hes not around teaching classes (a prospective student must know that he gives seminars around the world and coaches world class competitors/UFC fighters) the other professors and assistants are also world class champions, very competent and teach great classes (special thanks here to Fabio and Kennedy).I need to say Cobrinha is my first experience with BJJ and I started training here less than a year after a knee surgery (had to cut my physical therapy short moving to LA) which, as consequence, made me put a lot of weight before getting a green light from my doctor to start training BJJ. Cobrinha is very attentive, he knows all of his students by name and, during my first classes, he was always asking if I was comfortable in doing the drills and constantly checking if I was experiencing any knee pain or discomfort. That wasnt my privilege as hes very concerned about his students progress and well-being.Another point Id like to address in this review is the behaviour other students as it seems to have been negatively raised in some of other reviews. Cobrinha enforces a culture of collaboration, safely training and encourages his students to have fun while training here. I can attest myself the place is full of welcoming people and I already made good friends here. However, a prospective student needs to have in mind that different people have different motivations to train Jiu Jitsu. Some people train for fitness and well-being purposes, some due to doctors recommendation tot tackle diabetes type 2, some are martial arts enthusiasts, some are actual MMA practitioners, some are former high school/college wrestlers transitioning to Jiu Jitsu. The point Im trying to make is that when youre training or rolling with a partner you might come across people that are very competitive and, when rolling, just want to submit you as quick as they can but I can say the vast majority of them is seeking to apply the technics they learned in class and improve their game, these guys usually adjust the intensity of the training according to their sparring partners level and are happy to help/give tips to less experienced students. This kind behaviour is constantly encouraged by Cobrinha. The last point I think is relevant to address is the gym cleanness. As I mentioned above, I havent had the chance to train elsewhere but I heard from my colleagues who trained Jiu Jitsu elsewhere before joining Cobrinha, or even people who had the chance to visit different gyms, that he runs one of the cleanest shops in town. So, if youre a germophobic this might be your place.Hope thats useful!JV

I joined Cobrinhas academy in November of last year after asking for BJJ school recommendations from a professional Bellator fighter. I went in with absolutely zero combat sport experience or knowledge, and had no idea regarding Cobrinha (or the other instructors) reputations and accomplishments within the competitive jiu jitsu scene. Upon taking my very first fundamentals class it was immediately apparent -- to me, a completely clueless newcomer with a bjj IQ of zero -- what kind of academy Cobrinhas was. The amount of guidance, attention to detail, specific instruction, and encouragement is totally unparalleled. From the instructors to the peers at this academy, it is clear that EVERY ONE is there to learn and help others learn. There is a sincere community feeling at every class Ive taken, from Kennedys 9am class to Cobrinhas evening fundamentals class to Fabbios no gi class. Every single instructor is there to see you through it and make sure you receive the same knowledge that they did to become world champions. Cobrinhas academy fosters a champion level setting without the pretentiousness, bravado, or intimidation that one might otherwise expect at an academy with such an elite pool of talent. I am very grateful to have fallen into the wonderful martial art of Brazilian jiu jitsu and even more grateful to have done it at Cobrinhas. I cant recommend this academy enough. If youre even remotely considering dropping in, do it! Every one from Dani to Cobrinha himself are extremely helpful and will guarantee a smooth introduction to the art.

If youre looking for fun safe learning/rolling, this is the wrong place. I was injured twice by instructors here without so much as an apology. (The second time took me a year of physical therapy to recover from). The most frustrating part is that my membership was not refunded. Instead, I was fed some loophole in their refund policy.

I am a 2nd degree Black Belt under Rigan Machado and I trained at Cobrinha’s a little over 3 years ago, and I have to say that it is by far the best gym that I have ever trained at. I guess it all depends on what your needs are. I had been a Black Belt for some years and all I wanted was to get better and roll with other Black Belts who were world class and I got that, and then some! I attended the noon competition classes and I thoroughly enjoyed every second of it. The competition class is a VERY serious class and the best of the best come from all over the world to train there before big tournaments. I wasn’t as regular there as I would’ve liked to have been because of my work schedule and family obligations. There were months that I missed and that ate me up inside but I paid without complaint for over 2 years because I honor my obligations. Then I was called away out of state to take a job and Dani graciously let me out of my contract without any issues. I have the highest respect for Cobrinha and his wife Dani and the way they run their gym. They try to foster a culture of respect from their students such as, when I was there we Black Belts were expected to go around the whole room and personally greet and shake hands with all of the students on a daily basis. That speaks volumes about the character of the Cheif instructor right there. There is no cursing and foul language allowed on the mats and so on. They have a list of things that are expected from the students there, and in particular the higher belts. Cobrinha treats his white belts with as much dignity and respect as he does his Black Belts because thats the kind of person that I’ve seen him be. He’s a genuine guy. If there is pettiness and rudeness and cliques and stand-offish types on the mats, those are personal issues with those people. Cobrinha cannot be blamed for that. That is simply human nature. People are like that all over the world and in every gym imaginable. If you are looking for a gym where you won’t sometimes see the ugliness that’s inside of all of us, good luck and let me know when you find it. And by the way I got hurt there also, two times! Cobrinha told me to continue to come in and watch the techniques while my injuries heal so that I don’t get rusty. I didnt take him up on the offer because I don’t have the discipline to watch my teammates roll without wanting to jump in myself so I just stayed home and did a bunch of YouTube grappeling to keep my mind sharp until I healed up. I’ve been hurt at every gym I’ve ever trained at and this place is no exception. There are beasts and animals training there and I was 1 of them, and like a big boy we advanced grapplers don’t cry about it and blame the gym when we get hurt. It’s a personal thing to deal with until we can return back to the mats. They also routinely sent out personal emails, cards and made phone calls just to check in on me when they haven’t seen me in awhile or when I was injured. That’s what I call a morale boost and a motivator. They are a caring family. I absolutely love this place and this group of guys and i’m coming back as soon as I move back to Cali. Cobrinha is a class act PLAIN AND SIMPLE!

This gym is terrible, everyone here has a huge ego and they are extremely unfriendly to new people. Cobrinha treats you like you have to prove yourself and his proven favorites will complain about you if they don’t like you. So of course, the new guy must be the problem. There’s a lot of jerks who treat lower belts like they are punching bags and when the instructor isn’t looking, all the dirty moves come out on the new guy. You have to put up with it or risk looking like you don’t fit in. Also, they are very shady about their billing practices and your contract. Once you sign the contract you are stuck no matter what and they act like your crazy if you tell them that you need some time off. No contract freezes, no refunds, and no exceptions for people who are unhappy training with jerks who bully you around because you’re the new guy. Just don’t bother with this gym.

I wanted to quit jiu jitsu before joining Cobrinha BJJ. I trained casually for a few years, a couple times a week at most, frequently taking weeks and months off at a time. I was discouraged with my lack of progress, I was afraid to compete, and I doubted if continuing to train was worth my time. I had a budding career and thought, how can I compete with people who train full-time? Whats the point if I can never be the best? When I first met Cobrinha I did not know anything about him. He and his wife Daniella were so nice and welcoming. It only took one class for me to see that on top of being a world class instructor, he really cares about his students. His positivity is uplifting and made me realize that I need to train because I truly love the sport.Ive been at the school for over 6 months now. My open guard game was non-existent when I started, but with Cobrinhas guidance it is now one of my strengths. I look forward to every class and leave hungry for more.Cobrinha teaches us all the techniques he uses in competition. He truly leads by example and Im sure all his other students will agree that he is such a positive influence in all of our lives.

Excellent atmosphere and hospitality, both teachers and training partners. If you do bjj and you are in L.A. You have to do a treino there. Kennedy and Fabio are in charge of the non-gi class (the one I participate in). I would have liked to participate in other classes but the budget did not allow me, this is $ 60 a class.

I attended an all-belt class on Saturday during my training. Its a bit far from downtown Los Angeles, so we recommend moving to Uber or Lyft. The location is in a building facing the main street, but you shouldnt get lost as there is a glass dojo on your right as soon as you enter the building. The class was very serious as all the students paid attention to Mr. Kobrinyas movements. Also, the spar was divided into two groups according to weight, so I didnt have to pair with people who have different weights.Everyone greeted me with a handshake, and I was able to enjoy the training in a good atmosphere.I participated in all-belt class on Saturday at practicing.
