The Drawing Marathon is fantastic. It catapults you into another realm. Many fine artists in my group, and it was inspiring to seeall the different approaches.Someone gave it one star because it doesnt follow button-down, academic traditions. (Thank God!)If you want same-old, same-old go to Art Students League. If you want to grow as an artist, this is your place.

I was able to get a great scholarship so that is was affordable and I will continue to go back for lectures as my career progresses. Financial aid is available and the school is willing to work with you if you are struggling with it. I havent had any issues with my accreditation and I have received several residencies and work positions without any issues.I would highly suggest doing the drawing marathons. I have done over twelve throughout my career and they have helped me immensely with any artist block. They are a great way to get outside of your comfort zone. Regardless of what you do the studio school has people who will help you find your voice. They certainly helped me.

As a former student, I find that the dialogue created between faculty and students is unique and necessary. There is a forward thinking drive among the artists that roots itself in the extensive tradition of painting and sculpture as both concept and craft.

I took the Drawing Marathon with a focus on painting the portrait. I am a prof at an Ivy League school, and I can say that this is probably the poorest educational experience Ive ever had. There was virtually no instruction of any kind - nothing on composition, technique, color mixing, history, or any of the many things that could have been covered. Moreover, even as the instructors came by from time to time to offer comments, I never heard any of them ask any student what they were working on, how they were thinking about their work, etc. So the teacher comments remained abstract and virtually useless. If you want to paint, hire a model - at least that way you can set up interesting poses, make sure the room isnt sweltering, and arrange them so they arent just a silhouette against the window (none of which the NYSS bothered to do). If you want tips on your painting or to work on your skills, go somewhere else. Im giving one star because it is a beautiful space. But every student I spoke to in this class left very disappointed, knowing they had wasted 2 weeks and their hard-earned money.

Unfortunately, this schools current reputations greatly relies on its past. Most students today have one talent! They can pay full tuition in this economy. Tis a pity.

Im an alum of the MFA program- and I can honestly say that my work reached unexpected and new levels due to the dedication of the faculty and the conversations with my peers in the studios.
