This was my first serious acting class that I took and it met my every expectations and beyond. Is it easy? No. Is it challenging? Yes. But I believe we learn & grow the most when situations are difficult or challenging. I wanted a glimpse of what it meant to be a true artist as an actor and the summer intensive at MFS certainly delivered that. I am going to say that Charlie is not a teacher for everyone. He makes that very clear and its up to the individual to know for themselves whether they want to learn from a person like Charlie. Personally for me I need an instructor like Charlie. I need someone to push me to places where I am afraid to go as an actor. And while sometimes it was frustrating & scary, those small breakthroughs that happens makes it worth it. The summer intensive allowed me to certainly learn more about myself as a person. Hopefully I can learn and further strengthen my foundation as an actor when I continue to learn the Meisner technique.

Online acting classes with Charlie have been a revelation for me. I have found the online format an invaluable way to continue my acting training from home and stay plugged into a community of like-minded artists. And for better or worse, the future of this industry is virtual in many aspects. Is the online platform more challenging to work with at times? Yes. Do I have to hold myself much more accountable for my work? Yes. Do I miss the physical contact? Of course I do — but all of these challenges make the online classes that much more effective for those who are truly committed.Ive continued to grow in abundant ways since taking my classes online with Charlie and think there is immense value for those looking to get their acting training started online at Maggie Flanigan.

In addition to the Acing Class in the summer intensive, I took Voice 1. Liz Eckert is an excellent voice teacher. Shes very attentive and patient with everyone - I could see how much she enjoyed witnessing each of the students progressed along our own exploratory process. Working with her was a pleasure. As a singer and an actor I know how crucial it is to be able to express myself fully, without having physical obstacles that get in the way of fully using my voice to do so. I wanted to see what this class had to offer and see what blocks I might not even know I needed to deal with. The class left me with highly practical techniques in the form of an adaptable warm-up routine. I have something I can use to relax and free up my body and voice for any situation that I need it. The work we did was incredibly subtle; with each exercise and lecture I found how challenging it is to explore how my entire physical body connected to my voice. It was surprisingly difficult to find ways to relax muscles and sense the impact it had. It was also amazing how well it worked, how the exercises we did relaxed our bodies, connected us to our own voices, and allowed us to use them more freely. I certainly identified obstacles of mine in this class that I didn’t fully address, and now I have the tools to explore them further.

Bill is an excellent teacher and does a wonderful job of encouraging the students technically and spiritually to bring the best version of themselves to each commercial audition. The Commercial Acting class changed my entire perspective on commercial acting and showed me how technical the process can be. I feel inspired and much better equipped to break down commercial copy and approach an upcoming audition with confidence. I would highly recommend the class.

REVIEW FOR MOVEMENT CLASS AT MFS: Movement I was highly recommended to me by all my Acting classmates and by my teachers. I thought that movement class was going to be all about dance and expression through movement in a general way, but it was a lot more centered on specific applications of movement to deepen contact and response with other people, which was challenging but deeply rewarding. It was also about using movement to release my body and allow emotion to flow more freely. The contents of the class were much more intimately related to the craft of acting than I expected. The teacher, Sarah Faye, teaches with humor, grace, and freedom and it was a joy to be part of her class.

Charlie, Karen, and Cherry are the absolute best. Ive taken many classes in NY, since moving here three years ago. Nothing has been quite like the six week summer intensive at Maggie Flanigan studio. There is an energy the that the instructors bring to the place that is professional, safe, and filled with lots of heart and dedication. Each class brings you closer to taking yourself seriously as actor. The words, home for the serious actor, fully encompass what it means to learn at the Maggie Flanigan studio. I feel changed as an artist, more confident, and inspired to dig deeper into the training. This is not a fun class to take in your free time. This is a class that will shed some light on what it means to live truthfully in the moment and to be prepared for a life long career. Im very thankful that I decided to jump in.

If youre ready to fully dive into a professional acting program that actually pushes you to be better, this is the one. Charlie will not waste your time or money by massaging your ego. His classes are taught in a fair, honest, and supportive way with no room for BS. I have never had an experience like Ive had in the Summer Intensive Program. It is worth every penny. Classes are made up of students of all ages from all over the world and walks of life, and the environment of support, trust, and expectations Charlie sets up really does leave you with a group of people that becomes your family. Ive released all ideas of what I think I know, trusted in the work, and what Ive gotten back already is priceless. TRAIN HERE.

Nutrition For Actors quickly became one of my favourite classes at Maggie Flanigan, as I started to notice the difference it was making to my life right away. Every week I looked forward to seeing my teacher and classmates, talking about how Id been feeling, what my diet was like, and what my goals were for next week. I made some great strides in my life due to this class, everything from joining the gym to cutting down on bad habits and relationships to finding the joy in cooking properly for myself. Playwriting with Elliot Quick was an incredibly fun, helpful, and inspiring class. We spent two months reading a wide array of classic and contemporary plays to understand the different possible approaches to writing our own plays. By the end of the course, I had many seeds of plays, first drafts, and ideas, some of which have come to fruition. I highly recommend this class if someone is interested in creating your own work! Elliot is wonderful and attentive teacher.

I’m just about to wrap up the 7-week summer conservatory and I’ve never been more excited about my career choice. In the last couple of months, I’ve had more intense emotional experiences than I’ve really let myself have in years. Before I did this, I didn’t even know it was possible to bring myself to truthfully experience such extreme feelings like rage, despair, terror - I guess I always imagined that as an actor I would have to “fake” things like that. Only a few weeks into the program we had exercises that brought those feelings to the surface for me. It’s addictive! After seeing the kind of progress I’ve made in just a matter of weeks here, I don’t think I could walk away without seeing what the 2 year program will do for me.All that was just with Charlie in the acting class! In Voice class with Liz, I really got to see what a dramatic impact you can have on the sound of your voice through exploring what’s happening in the rest of your body. In Movement with Tina, I learned to improvise sophisticated and beautiful choreography, feeling the kind of joy and discovery the entire time that I haven’t felt since I was a little kid. Finally, I took On Camera Auditioning with Larry; that was so practical and useful to me as someone that hasn’t done much work in front of the camera and he really did a good job tailoring his teaching to each of us in the class and what we needed to learn. If you’re uncertain at all about going to school here, my best advice to you is to at least give yourself the opportunity to take the summer intensive - or talk to anyone that’s done it! Head down to the studio and I guarantee any student you find will give you an earful about how it’s changed their life for the better.

It is extremely hard to put into words how much Maggie Flanigan Studio has changed my life. I had no idea how much hard work and how much of yourself was required to become a real TRUTHFUL actor. Charlie pushes you in a such a great way that you leave that stage sometimes numb and in shock at what he is able to get out of you as an actor.I was completely lost before I joined this school and was sometimes lost while in this school but the work that Charlie Sandlan has us doing was so powerful and beneficial that it made me realize that I am exactly where I needed to be.I know this might sound dramatic but this school truly saved and changed my life. It is such a great community, you become close with your classmates and other people attending the school. It became a second home to me when I needed it the most.Having great office staff that are always there to help like Katie and Scott is also an added plus. The movement class with Sara Faye also extremely opened me up 100 percent as an actor and I highly recommend taking that class the second you join the school. If you want a life changing experience while gaining all the tools you need to go out into the world and have a successful long lasting acting career. This is the place you need to be.I cannot explain enough how great of a teacher Charlie Sandlan is, I am so excited to get back into his class this September. I found the Maggie Flanigan Studio on the recommendation of a friend who completed the two year program. I decided immediately upon talking with Charlie that I needed to be there. I enrolled in the summer intensive and truly had no idea what I was in for! It was the most expansive personal and professional journey I have ever embarked on. Charlie is there to help you find your own truth and to push you to explore openly and freely. He expects as much as he gives. Through his guidance, the support of the studio, and the commitment I made to my own process I found so much growth and so much more to explore. The community that is fostered at the studio is open, warm and supportive. Every student watched and grew together and bonded through the process. I can not wait to continue this work further with Charlie and at Maggie Flanigan. I know the personal and professional developments to come will be both surprising and exhilarating.

I signed up for the summer intensive and I’ve never felt more free and in myself than I have going through this program for such a short amount of time. Sure, it was scary and off putting at first but what kind of behavior are you willing to portray as an actor if you’re not willing to get a bit uncomfortable. I’m so appreciative to have a space where I can learn to feel more comfortable with myself as a human being and bring life to this world through this medium. I can’t wait to learn more.

The Maggie Flanigan Studio has created a program that allows you to explore all of the necessary factors that make up an artist. The program takes you far beyond scene work. You work on your voice, your body, and your knowledge of the history of the art. A perfect example of this is Anatomy for Actors. This class was incredibly crucial in building my awareness of the physiological make up of my instrument and how all of the moving parts can work together in my favor as an actor. Beyond that, it allowed me to explore my specific body and how my personal construction is unique and ways that I can use that to fully engage in my acting work. This class is also a wonderful enhancement to both movement and voice because it takes the work from those classes and expounds on it in an almost medical way that allows the actor to really get specific about the different parts of the body used in the voice and movement work. I am so glad I took this class during my first year because it has really made my growth in my other classes a little deeper and I am definitely more aware of my body and its physiological components than I ever would have been.

Dont come here to play. Be ready to commit a lot of your time, use a lot of your energy, ride emotional rollercoasters, hear harsh and honest criticism, and face parts of you youve pushed away for a long time. The professional bar he sets for his students is very high and it’s the reason I was able to push myself further than I ever expected. He doesn’t accept mediocrity, but instead inspires you to be brave and take risks. He believes in his students and knows how to help each person grow as an individual. The work is hard and learning to be open and vulnerable can be scary, but the Maggie Flanigan Studio and all of the teachers provide you with a safe space to seek out your most truthful and honest self. All of the staff are so passionate about what they do and why we are here as artists. This is a place where actors are free to explore so many different facets of themselves and learn what it truly means to be human. No one couldve prepared me for the life-altering work that ensued after making the commitment to train at the Maggie Flanigan Studio. I entered the program expecting to gain an understanding of technique, not realizing the amount of artistry and craft that were required of me. I walked out a more truthful actor, a more courageous artist, and a more empathetic human being. This program reintroduced me to my true self that, like for many of us, had been suppressed by society for most of my life. The work required me to craft from the most authentic, vulnerable and instinctual place that could only be discovered through a relentless effort to tell the truth. There was no room to hide behind mediocrity. I have never experienced a training program that made me feel safe and gave me the permission to learn through my mistakes like I did at this studio. Is it easy? Forget about it. Is it worth it? Absolutely. This program will challenge you in ways unimaginable, but at the end of it you will know what it means to be an artist. Both Maggie and Charlie understand the difficulties and complexities of teaching Meisner Acting, yet do so brilliantly and compassionately. My expectations were blown away. I left the summer intensive with a deeper love for acting, a much greater understanding of what it means to craft and truthfully do, and a renewed sense of self. Charlie will push you beyond what you think you are capable of. Its some of the hardest work I have done, but it is also some of the most worthwhile. Charlie creates an atmosphere where you feel safe to be vulnerable and take risks. The Maggie Flanigan Studio is training actors who will have long careers. There was a point in time when I felt stuck after my training at the studio had ended. I was auditioning as much as possible and taking industry workshops but something was missing. It was an awful feeling. I was down on myself and I allowed some of the realities of what it means to be an unknown mid-20s ethnic female actress to effect me negatively. I felt the artist inside me was not being challenged. I most definitely found that challenge in Maggies Advanced Scene Study class. First of all, Maggie is truly a master. She doesnt miss a beat. And, she gives you the opportunity to work on something great, with immense difficulty. To put your craft into practice and to struggle. Yes, you will struggle. My bad experience happened under Charlie Sandlan. He was a very bad teacher and spends all his time criticizing you, instead of helping you get better. His style is authoritative and harsh. He humiliates and makes students cry all the time, and no one is permitted to challenge him. I read Sandy Meisners book, and it was nowhere near as difficult as how Charlie taught it.MFS makes you sign disclaimer forms during the application process and they also make you leave your card on file. Its like an intimidation tactic if you want to leave, because they WILL NOT give you a refund, or any credit back even if you say the teachers style is not for you. I felt so humiliated and lost my confidence. Thankfully, Im regaining it back now. His instincts are always on point, and he wont let you get away with anything, which is exactly what you want. He always knew exactly what I personally needed to get my monologue where it needed to be. Before taking this class I knew I wasnt prepared to take on monologues since theyre such a different beast. But Charlie gave me all the tools to break them down and get them audition ready. Its a small intimate class, giving enough time for each person to work. You workshop your pieces with Charlie and he coaches you through out the working process. In the end, you will come out with at least one dramatic and comedic monologue worked out. I also learned just how difficult it is to find a great audition monologue. There were so many aspects that I was unaware of, that could potentially ruin an audition because the material wasnt right. I now know exactly what to look for, how to edit the monologue to make it workable, and how to identify what is not good material to use. All of the little details that are so crucial, that Charlie has instilled in us. Highly recommend this class, absolutely necessary for a trained actor.

Reiki is truly a treat. As an actor in NYC I often neglect my emotional well-being and internal growth. I often feel emotionally drained after an intense class or rehearsal, and Reiki is where I come to rest my mind and body, and turn my intention inwards to cultivate my emotional wealth. Reiki charges and releases at the same time. Laura is as supportive and loving as a teacher can be, and she has taught me to embrace vulnerbility, to welcome love and joy into my life and to let go of tension and frustrations that I dont need. I walked out of every Reiki class feeling like a better person and artist, thank you Laura!

Voice 3 has been one of the most essential classes in my training. After working in Linklater technique for Voice 1 and 2, being able to apply what Id learned to Shakespeare and classical texts has really expanded my capabilities as an actor. I was able to see how all the body and voice work that Ive done effects the words and the voice that comes out of me and how it impacts the life I can bring to my work. Professionally I now feel equipped for Shakespeare and other classical works.

The growth and profound self exploration experienced through taking this journey at Maggie Flanigan Studio is unparalleled; I’ve never felt so connected to who I am, and who I am becoming. It has opened my eyes, mind, and heart to the deepest aspects of my persona, and I couldn’t be more grateful to have found Maggie Flanigan Studio. Moreover, I love how they preach about work ethic and challenge you to question your contribution to this industry and great art form. Not only is the work challenging and highly rewarding, the space created is a safe haven, which allows an openness to experiences that are free of judgement. The keen awareness of Charlie as well as the faculty at MFS have of each student’s essence allows you to flourish both as an artist and human. If you’re looking for a comprehensive training that explores all facets of who you are mentally, emotionally, physically and even spiritually, you’ve come to the right place. Maggie Flanigan Studio is the place to be.

I took Anatomy for Actors because I felt that as an actor I needed to have a better understanding of my body and the way it functions. I’m excited to say that here you get that and a whole lot more. The way in which Marta Reiman taught this class inspired me. Marta is so passionate and knowledgeable and that springs forth in every class in a way that got me excited about what I was learning. I not only learnt about anatomy, but I gained insightful information on an array of topics. I learnt how to take care of my body, what stress and tension does, how to deal with it, holistic ways of healing, how to prevent injury, Fitness, alignment, Western and Eastern Medicine and these are just a few. I feel that Anatomy for Actors is such an essential class. It has completely changed the way I relate to my body. I have a greater appreciation of the miracle our instrument truly is.

I walked in a boy, left an artist. Thank you. This is not only an actor training, this was a life changing experience. I use this technique outside of acting. I cant express how grateful I am to have this curriculum under my belt. It brings me tears of joy to relive the experience as I write this. PM, Jr.

I got lucky. After months of researching various studios in New York, a friend and graduate recommended that I look into Maggie Flanigan Studio. Having read a few books on Sanford Meisner and his technique, I was skeptical. Repetition exercises... what could that possibly have to do with acting?, I asked. How could you ever know if you like it without actually trying. Acting is DOING! You wont find the answer after reading a couple books!, my friend emphatically replied. For one of the first times in my life, I was speechless. My friend spoke of his training with such admiration and understanding, I couldnt help but research the studio further and meet Charlie Sandlan in person. After sitting down and speaking with him, it was clear I had my work cut out for me. However, I also had no doubt that training at Maggie Flanigan would give me the foundation I needed to work professionally. Rarely does a day go by that I do not take note of how far my classmates and I have come in our short time at the studio. This program has transformed me as an actor and overall person. The studio provides a comprehensive approach to the art form, led by a staff of energetic and proficient teachers who inspire us daily. Every course I have enrolled in has provided distinct value and pushed me closer toward becoming the kind of serious and respected actor I aspire to be. Sanford Meisners technique has exposed me to parts of the human condition that I otherwise may have been too afraid or judgmental to approach-- a vital requirement for actors wanting to take on serious storytelling. The training has cracked me open and permitted me to fully experience what it is to be an actor. Most importantly, Charlie and the rest of the teachers at the studio have set a standard of work that is lowered for no one. I can not speak highly enough about this art form and every individual at Maggie Flanigan who strives to improve it.

Fundamentals of Playwriting: Aristotle said that a good drama should consist of at least one of the following elements: spectacle, character, plot, diction (language), music, thought. Fundamentals of Playwriting requires only one: Elliot B. Quick. A Yale graduate and a play reading architect. Before taking this class I had the privilege of studying Theatre History with Elliot for an entire year. That year wasnt an easy one, as it forced me to confront the ways of which i used to approach play reading. Elliots unconventional, think outside the box manners will expand the way you think one should read plays and will introduce you to techniques you didnt know existed. I always had an appetite for writing, so when i learned that Elliot offers a writing class i immediately enrolled. That was one of the easiest decisions i ever made. You get a ton of homework that will keep you busy the entire week. You share your work with the rest of the class (if you choose to do so) and get constructive feedback from your fellow classmates. Elliots enthusiasm and passion for playwriting is contagious and so it makes it extremely hard not to follow. Highly recommended!

When I started the Two Year Program at Maggie Flanigan Studio, I had just received my Bachelors Degree in Theatre and Drama. I had taken Theatre History and Script Analysis classes in college, but always struggled to apply what I had learned in seminars to actually breaking down a script as an actor. This is where Louisa Proske and her Script Analysis class truly succeeded. Over the course of two semesters, Louisa, who is a working New York City director with her own opera company, taught us how to look at scripts through an actors lens. We learned how to recognize and extrapolate the information encoded in scripts that is crucial for crafting a character. Often, Louisa would have us act out scenes and point out why every action and word choice shapes the story and illuminates the characters and relationships. We worked on everything even the most challenging scripts including Shakespeare, Ibsen, and Chekhov. In addition, Louisa brought in guest teacher Liz Carlson, the Artistic Director of Naked Angels, who gave us scripts to examine that are brand new and in development. I now use what I learned in script analysis whenever I get a new script, monologue, or sides, and these skills always lead me to discoveries and bring a greater depth to the story and the character I am attempting to portray. Louisa’s script analysis class will teach you to understand the ins and outs of a script from an actor’s perspective, and this is essential if you want to embody a character as truthfully as possible.
