Professor Geary offers a place for students to learn how to learn karate. It is not a karate daycare. Students are given the tools they need to succeed and get out of their training what they put in to it. Professor Geary works with his students on not simply going through the motions. Emphasis is placed on paying attention to details. He teaches principles such as effort, etiquette, sincerity, self-control, and character. I have one child that attends classes here. Perhaps when my younger one is old enough I will have two kids in classes.

Our son is taking lessons currently, and we are so appreciative of how patient the teachers are. There isn’t a rush to get the kids through the steps. The lessons are are a combination of physical, as well as mental. I started thinking about martial arts for my son several months ago as he was picked on (not very bad though) at school. While we discussed with the teachers how to deal with it, I thought its a good time to introduce him self-defense skills. I specifically looked for martial arts that also comes with tradition and history as we are from China and this Shaolin Kempo Karate caught my eyes immediately. We have been here for two months. Master Shifu (Professor Geary) is very responsive. Class size is limited to a decent number so each child has the chance to get one-on-one instruction. Professional instruction and clear explanation on each skill (help might needed from parents for young kids). All skills focus on self-protection while followed with attacking. It needs repetitive practice to get to a smooth move and this is what I consider essential for learning. Its a great place for serious learners. My son loves it.

Wouldn’t have gone out of my way to leave a review but it popped up on google... we had a horrible experience. In the end we were stuck with over $3,600 due for an entire future year of karate. An email was sent and was conveniently not answered that way he could claim we failed to end the contract in time for him to charge us for my son and husband. The WORST mistake that we are still paying off almost three years later. DON’T MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE. Not to mention the fact that he is horrible with kids... I would never recommend this business. Seriously, look elsewhere!

Geary is filthy lair.First he will lie that you have to pay once for black belt club and it is up to you when ever you can attend .Then when a person enrolls this lazy guy will just sit and ask his students to teach and will ask to do vacuums. Then he will make amendments to your agreement and then lie again that you will have to inform him if you are not attending for some reason.I called him and told him that father is sick as per his rules but still he cancelled my agreement. Also dont talk about smell and all to hide your filthy lie and laziness.

IMPORTANT! Before you send your kids to martial arts classes (or go yourself), you have to read this:When I was a kid I really wanted to learn Karate, so my parents enrolled me in a class close to our house. I was a pretty shy, artsy, not athletic child... so things like this were really outside of my comfort zone. Still, I was REALLY excited about this class. When I got there, the environment was really cold and commercial. There were tons of kids packed into a huge room and no one knew my name. All I remember was being told to get in line and start running these intense laps while the instructor screamed at us because discipline. I remember leaving the class crying because I was scared after being yelled at, and never going back again. That was my first experience with martial arts, and honestly - its kind of heartbreaking to look back on.Im 29 now and that experience always really stuck with me. The desire to practice martial arts never went away . The discipline, the technique, the empowerment - I always admired it, but I was never ready to make that jump because there were too many fears to overcome. Am I too old to start now? Am I too out of shape? Are they just going to scream at me? Am I going to be embarrassed in front of huge groups of people who have been doing this a long time? These fears that resulted from that initial experience held me back for a long time, not only from practicing martial arts, but from engaging in a lot of physical activities where I might experience the same thing. The good news is - If you choose the right school to practice at, the answer to all the above questions is NO. You arent the wrong size or age or gender or mentality to practice martial arts. When I first contacted Professor Geary, I was just looking to have some of these questions answered and explore if learning karate was even an option, honestly it wasnt a serious consideration at the time but more of a hopeful longshot. As soon as I reached out, he had my husband and I come in after class hours and just chat with him for a while, he showed us some basic movements and answered all of our questions. Most importantly, he let us know that there were people of all types at his school and we werent going to be having that type of negative experience that I described above. Before we knew it, we were both signed up and ready to attend our first class (which we were still VERY nervous for).Weve both been attending the school for a while now, and really I cant find enough good things to say about it. Its small class sizes, so its not overwhelming and you get tons of personal attention. You can learn at your own pace without judgment or pressure. All the people in our classes are really chill. Prof. Gearys credentials are impressive, hes hands down the most experienced teacher in Omaha and he will teach you himself. You get to learn traditional techniques and practical, modern applications. He is really transparent about the prices, and how they compare to other schools in the area (the prices are very good, and from the research Ive done you get much more training time for your money). The environment is really comfortable, and I definitely couldnt picture training anywhere else. We both really love practicing karate and it has quickly become the most anticipated day of the week for us.So I guess the point of this very long review is, please dont make the mistake of ruining something that can be a huge passion for your child because you went to a slightly closer karate school. They will thank you for making that extra drive. And if youre reading this as an adult and youre not sure if its OK for you to join because of who you are, it IS ok, and I hope to see you at a class really soon.

I would like to state how pleased I was to learn that my children would not be promoted to the rank of black belt until they were truly able to defend themselves against an adult. We have friends whose children have taken other martial arts from other schools and earned their black belts in the guaranteed 3 year time allotted for their black belt club fee. I doubt that after only 3 years of study, and no more, that they remember even one half of what they were taught. By the time our children have earned their black belts, it is my hope that the techniques will be second nature to them and they will always be a part of them. I believe this will be so.

My family and I have really enjoyed our experience at Professor Gearys School. I have been in some sort of martial arts training most of my life and have several experiences with other schools. Some good and some bad, Some belts I earned and some were just thrown at me to obtain the fee. I can whole heartedly tell you, here at Christopher N. Gearys Shaolin Kempo, you earn every belt. All the moves learned are practical for the real world and taught in a relatable way to the user. Professor Geary is a kind hearted person but absolutely not a push over. As anyone that has excelled at anything in life with the help of a coach, you would not be this far along if that coach didn’t push you to do the work to get you there. Professor Geary believes in his students, their ability to be great, encourages them to be better and put in the work. Not just in his Kempo class but in life.My two kids and I are all students. I feel confident that my kids are getting the proper instruction to defend themselves against threats when Im not around to protect them. As a side note, we are able to bond at home around Kempo as we practice the moves together. It gives us much more in common, cuts down on their screen time and gives them more physical activity. I am thoroughly impressed with Prof. Geary’s dojo. The look of his school puts my old school to shame. There really wasnt any class to the decorum. Mostly, just some mirrors and a painting on the wall. No real style or theme. It doesnt even seem appropriate to compare the two. On that same note of comparing my old school to Prof. Geary’s, his teachings are light years ahead of what I used to belong to. I was taking Tae Kwon Do. Honestly, I would say that after four years of TKD and just two weeks of Prof. Geary’s classes, I am more confident that I could defend myself with Kempo Karate.Gone are the pretty kicks and awkward stances. Now I feel that I could protect myself from an armed (knife) or unarmed assailant using tactics that flow and are very effective. The best way I could compare the two styles would be that the brown belt version of me from TKD would get his butt handed to him by an orange belt Kempo Karate version of me. Basically, switching styles was the best decision I could have made. Hopefully most people wont have to waste the money and hours spent on four years of an inferior system. Prof. Geary sincerely wants to help people better themselves and for that I thank him!

Growing up in England for the first 37 years of my life gave me certain standards for myself, my way of life and the future of my children. My older children went to Karate in England, the style was similar but the instructor was lacking in the teaching of the History of Karate, the practicing of meditation and inner peace and Prof. Geary teaches that, it is all part of his way of teaching and I have noticed a huge difference in the way my children have started to handle anger and stress. Now instead of lashing out first, they stop and breathe and think of the actions they are about to take, it doesn’t happen every time but it is happening, and I am grateful that their Mentor is teaching them that. One of my Sons, Lee, went to Kim’s Tae Kwon Do School but it was money for grading, money for belts, money for competitions they had to attend because every student represented the school.Anyone can get a basement and teach fighting that they call Karate, and charge through the nose for it, Professor Geary on the other hand teaches the whole art of Karate and I am so glad that I looked into schools and not just take the first one I found. I Have 3 children in the school, I am on my own raising them, but I don’t begrudge one penny of the tuition, all around it is money well spent!

Although I have not attended Christophers classes I feel that I do know his character and resolve to help people. I am sure this is the way he conducts his classes whether its teaching children or adults. If I were to take classes, or suggest a place for my own family to go, Christophers Shaolin Kempo Karate would be where Id send them. I think the down to earth and professional style I have seen in Christopher Geary would be something Id look for in a teacher. I recommend that you check his school out if you are looking for a place for you or your kids to take Karate classes.

Was just dropped from Black Belt Club and from school. Professor Geary stated that if I made a contribution to the school, he would consider reinstatement. Good money after bad?Due to health issues, (debilitating leg sciata and foot drop and a death in the family out of state) I did not make a July class. I had attended every month since inception. My fault.During my time of regular attendance, Professor Geary primarily sat at his desk and we students were instructed by other more advanced students. No great issues with the student teachers, Dave and Jaime, as they were enthusiastic and patient, but that was not what I paid over $4k for.Professor Geary sat at his desk, staring at the computer screen with his back to us for the majority of class. Turning halfway around and asking if we had any questions was the extent of his personal interaction in my class experience. My fault for paying thousands of dollars upfront and not demanding that HE personally instruct classes.I would advise anyone considering joining to pay month to month and not sign any contractWhen I politely inquired about a pro-rated refund, due to my health issues, he suggested the additional contribution to the school which I declined, his response was to insult me, told me to never contact him and blocked me from communicating with him.If you are looking for a teacher who will take a smoke break in the middle of your class, you found him!Lastly, he does pressure students etc to purchase his Masters Guide (typos and all), and submit a 5 star review almost from day 1.Very disappointed in childness and vindictive actions.I fully expect a snarky retort on my comments, but I guess truth hurts.

Professor Geary provides excellent instruction and is most knowledgeable. He is a good man who cares for his students progression. And he has a good sense of humor which makes for a comfortable place to practice. I would recommend his dojo to anyone with any experience level in the martial arts.

Good introduction for my child. Good self defense teaching. Helping my child listen better. Also helping with self discipline. Lots of individual teaching by the owner himself. Highly recommended
