Aces is a great place. Honestly, I came in expecting to be coddled because Im neither athletic nor coordinated. I came in expecting to work out and then go home feeling that I did my 30 min of exercise a day. instead, I leave each class thinking about how I can improve and Ive never felt this way about a sport before.Aces is teaching me not only how to better myself, but to protect myself and have fun while doing so.there is no coddling, no placating, just hard work and improvement. Highly recommend!

Ill highly not recommend this place.A year ago, I left a 5 stars review for this place and now is just sad watching how they went from 4.8 stars to 4 stars in one year period, same reasons.I put my account on hold due I got pregnant, all good. I was supposed to go back by July 2020, but this location (where I signed for) wasnt open yet, well, they still charge the monthly payment. I called to let them know, they said they were open in Pflugerville or I can take online classes. I told them none of those options were suitable for me so, I asked my money back or use it to cover the fee for breaking up the yearly contract (yes, they make you sign for a year and charges you for breaking it). Long story short, they said I cant have my money back because they were open in Pflugerville (50+ min commute from home), online (its a contact sport, I dont know how that make sense in their heads), or freeze my account for another two months (I have a new born, I dont know when Ill feel safe again about Covid) they were threatening me, saying that if we cant get an agreement, they will continue charging my card with the monthly payment. I had no choice but giving them more money. They didnt care I just had a new born and they already had their money. It is a shame that such a high level BJJ gym has so inadequate administration, they will try to get as much money as they can.Im not a hater, I really liked the gym and since I trained for more than 2 years BJJ (in another school, in another city) I thought it was a good idea signing for another year. There is a lots of good BJJ schools around Austin area, dont make your life hard making business with this people.:::UPDATE AFTER PROFESSOR RESPONSE:::Professor, you better that anyone knows how much I used to loved this place, as I said and Ill never take it back: the level and the knowledge of all of the staff is amazing. All of the coaches and especially you, have a technique that blows my mind, cant say more than loved all the time I spent there. As I said, I was very grateful when you guys accepted to freeze my account when I got pregnant; however, when I supposed to come back I had a new born, a pandemic and a 7K debt in the hospital. When I spoke to James he was very nice at the beginning and then, the things got a little rude from him, I tried everything to make yall understand that the commute to Pflugerville just didnt work for me, its too far. Come on, I couldnt stay away from home more than 3 hours having a new born.I was very sad and disappointed, I wasnt refusing to pay, the money was already taken from my account and I just wanted to make it count for breaking the lease, I wasnt asking anything for free. For real guys, you broke my heart, you were family for me and all of the sudden I was just a number and a dollar sign.I also tried to make Coach Ty [when he called to collect the money] to understand my situation but, still a no no, we need more money. He was way more kind that James tho.Im keeping all of the good memories I made there, I said and will say forever, this is one of the best gyms that Ive ever trained at but, when is about finances it turns weird.Cheers, professor.

I came to ACES to find a new way to get in shape other than running or biking at the gym. What I found was a community of awesome people who are here to help you become the best you. Whether your goal is to loose some weight, be able to defend yourself on the streets or just find a place to compete, they will do what they can to help you accomplish those goals. You just have to show up! Def check ACES out!

Extremely disappointed in my experience with Aces as I tried to work through financial troubles due to Covid-19. After several months of trying to support the gym during the pandemic despite being an unemployed creative by continuing to pay at a discounted rate(which they did agree to), I was speaking to another friend & member and discovered they put her membership on a freeze for her. I then reached out asking the gym for a freeze on my membership as my business was continuing to take a severe financial hit and with the removal of the CARES act I could no longer feasibly pay for a $100/mo reduced membership rate for a service I could not really use(as while they began offering online classes due to living in a small apartment I had little to no room to train, and I did not feel comfortable going to their Pfleugerville location which recently began in person classes due to virus concerns).I asked politely in my email for a freeze, explaining my situation, and was told flat out they were not offering freezes, which was an obvious lie as I personally knew someone who was granted one. I told them of my awareness of others being granted one, along with briefly explaining that the online classes are not easy for my learning style, and was met with a reply that was incredibly insulting, alluding to the fact I was not putting in enough effort in adapting to the situation and I should try harder. Upon receiving this I expressed that if they could not offer an amicable solution given that they were caught in a blatant lie about offering a freeze to one client and not another(despite us both being in the same financial situation, I just did not ask at the right time as I was trying to support a fellow small business as long as I could) that this would be my formal request for cancellation(which, by the way, would be an additional $300 fee I would have to pay the following month on top of $100 membership as I did not land within the apparent 10 day window you must tell them before your billing period - another fact I was not told and could not review as the company never gave me a copy of the contract I signed), they finally offered a 2 month freeze - with a $25 freeze fee. To me, this fee is extremely petty as it is not even really a freeze, nor was this fee required for the other member I am friends with. Overall, this company has extremely inconsistent policies that their members cannot review or verify, and seem to care much more about wringing as much cash as they can out of a client than they do helping support their members through a global pandemic. This, coupled with further questionable practices I learned from another member, lead me to have to pay their exorbitant cancellation fees just to save myself from potentially returning after this freeze only to be met with more inconsistent policies, potentially causing even more financial harm during these times where I am struggling to pay my rent, as I am not sure they would be willing to have honored a reduced rate upon return if the pandemic continues to cause my business financial harm after this freeze. They are extremely untrustworthy.Had they simply honored the freeze they offered to another member, I would have continued to be happily attending this gym as the coaches are overall great. Ty, specifically, is an amazing and supportive coach. Where the trouble lies for this company is unfortunately clearly within the management and owners.

I love Ty, the instructor, and a lot of the classmates I met through aces BUT I realized I didn’t have the time to commit and my sister who was training with me got real sick so she also couldn’t go for like a month I began to feel like I was paying for no reason so I decided to cancel. Trying to cancel was such a hassle and they need to make that process a lot easier; it shouldn’t be that difficult, why do I have to email and then after I say I want to cancel—which I asked for a payment plan on the $300 fee ($150 now and $150 a week later)— I then was supposed to confirm that they could take the money out which I wasn’t aware of since I told them I wanted to cancel and we had at least 3-4 emails worth of conversation on the topic, and since I didn’t say “yes take the money out”, I was charged another monthly payment ($230) for a class instead of the $150 and I was still considered an active member. This is really some BS...and I still had to pay $300 the next month when I became aware of what all happened. Smh. Just if you’re signing up be committed and if you have to cancel MAKE SURE THEY CANCEL YOU RIGHT AWAY!

BEWARE: SHADY BUSINESS! THEY WILL TRY TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF YOU IF YOU GET INJURED! I can attest these guys dont care about their new members. They act like they do during their pressure-sell (expect this at the end of your first free session), but they just want to lock you into a contract and bill the s%&# out of you. You wont hear from them again until you show up. Anyhow, after being presented with a contract, I asked Coach Ty Strange whether I could get out without a penalty if I was injured and couldnt roll (fair question for someone pushing 40 years old); he assured me that I could, and with that, I signed up for a membership. I should have demanded that Coach Ty scribble that assurance on the paperwork, because as fate would have it, I got into a nasty bike accident requiring hospital treatment a few months later. After a CAT scan, my doctors said I could not get another concussion without risking serious permanent damage. I called and gave Aces Jiu Jitsu notice of the injury and thought that was that, based on the contract we made. They admitting to getting my notice, but instead of reaching out to me, they didnt respond for weeks and only called me after billing me for another cycle. When they did reach out, Coach James Shubert left me a voicemail claiming he wanted to help me out, but then Aces billed me AGAIN for another cycle a few days later! We then got into a dispute over the charges, and while this was happening, THEY HAD THE FREAKING GALL TO BILL ME A THIRD TIME, all because I didnt abide by some particular cancellation process in the fine print of paperwork I was never given a copy of (!!!)---and STILL dont have despite demanding it twice! And now they want to charge me an additional $300 cancellation fee, in total breach of what we agreed to, again based on some fine print I cannot even consult! Oh yeah, they also never gave me my Gi, yet billed me $195 for that. But hey, they are willing to finally send me my Gi now! Nice guys, let me tell ya!Come to find out, their modus operandi is to not provide you with a copy of the paperwork you sign unless you demand one. Really, Coach James Shubert, their head coach, actually admitted that this is their business policy. If thats not a red flag, I dont know know what is.Takeaway: Go to another gym! Dont sign a contract with these shady dudes. And if you do make a deal with these guys, dont treat it like a gentlemans agreement, because, believe me, they wont. Assume that they will try to cheat you if something happens like you get a job in another city or get injured. And if you get an assurance or modification or anything from them before signing, make darn sure they put in writing in their paperwork, because theyll deny it later if there is anyway they can squeeze more money out of you. Also, demand a copy of any paperwork that you sign with them. Dont give them the opportunity to hold you to some fine print that you cant even consult.Im having to sue these guys in JP Court sadly. Also reporting them to the Better Business Bureau. Im not one to give negative reviews, but these guys deserve it.

Aces Jiu Jitsu is awesome. I had never done any martial arts before and right from day 1 I learned useful skills, and its been exponential growth since then. Their style is super real, no BS - they teach you only moves that work and want you to be successful both on the mat and in real life. All the coaches and all my training partners have been awesome - competitive and fun but careful to not injure each other. Id highly recommend Aces for anyone who wants to get into BJJ or continue their training at a higher level.

While in Round Rock for a business trip I dropped in at Aces in Pflugerville to train several times and had a fantastic experience. Ive been training bjj since 2011 and moving around for work Ive been to a number of gyms so I can say the instruction as Aces is exceptional. Prof Mikal and the rest of the team have a wealth of knowledge and in just the few classes I attended I picked up some new techniques and refined others that Ive known for years. I also dropped in for an open mat and got some great rolls in - good intensity but also everyone was safe and in control. Thank you Prof Mikal and the rest of the Aces crew!

Dont give your card info or sign any papers, they will steal your money. I started a membership in July and for health issues I had to cancel in August, but they kept charging me for the next 5 months saying that my membership wasnt canceled only frozen for the month I was sick + $25 fee. ( They have no idea for how long Ive been sick) THEY ARE THIEVES.If you want to try Jiu Jitsu just dont there so many other good places in Austin where Im sure they will not steal your money. Ace Jiu jitsu has helped me perfect my techniques, and has taught me patience and skill. The classes are small and it allows the instructor to be able to work with each student to make sure you learn the technique step by step. People have to remember this is a professional facility that teaches you how to defend yourself as well as protecting yourself. Im a disabled vet, and ty will work around my disability and modify moves so I can still learn them.

I got ringworm from this gym. Based on appearance they fail. The gym is located in a good spot and close to the city of Austin. However, when you walk up you see a big sign that is advertising a grand opening. I thought oh wow, this must be a new place. When I asked it was clear they had been opened for awhile, they just dont seem to care about their gym. There is a lot of deferred maintenance, they go directly from one class to another without washing the mats. The instructor Mikal seemed really nice but then some nerdy guy kept trying to get me to sign up. I told him I would think about it. By the time I left I had dried off from the workout and went home and showered. Two days later I felt VERY itchy on my left bicep. In time I looked it up online and realized I had ringworm. I had to go see my physician to get a steroid cream to get it removed. I will not be returning here and I suggest anyone who is interested in MMA to find a new place that takes pride in their environment.

HIGHLY RECOMMEND training here - fun and safe environment to learn self defense and martial arts!I’m a fairly petite woman, and I started BJJ 4 months ago with self defense and a new challenging work out as my primary drives. In 4 short months, I’ve learned quite a few genuinely effective ways to defend myself against people of ANY size. The instructors don’t wait for you to improve your belt color before teaching you the techniques you may need if you find yourself in a dangerous real life situation. Instead, they explain the purpose of the technique and create a safe environment to practice, going step by step and making sure everyone is comfortable before advancing. As a small adult, man or woman, this is huge. And the coaches are awesome! I’ve worked with coach Ty, Prof Mikal, and coach James, and they’re all great people. Everyone is extremely knowledgeable and dedicated to helping you achieve your goals. And that extends beyond the coaches to the other people that are training! It is a very supportive environment.Whether you’re interested in self defense, competition, or just doing a challenging workout with a solid group of people, Aces has you covered. They also offer seminars, which, even as a beginner, you can come away from with a lot of useful information!Again, highly recommend training here!

Ive trained jiu jitsu for a few years now, so when I moved to Austin in 2018 I wanted to find a place to call home that had what I was looking for long term. First and foremost a culture of respect, honor and accountability, second a winning attitude with coaches dedicated to my success both on and off the mats, and third a damn good place to learn how to snap and tap some folks out. After checking out several gyms and organizations around town, I chose Aces Jiu Jitsu Club because it embodied all three plus so much more. If you are looking for a place to train brazilian jiu jitsu and muay thai in Austin, I am confident that you will find a friendly and dedicated staff ready to help you succeed. Come train!

Here’s my full, honest review of my experience at Aces which was a span of (estimated) 4 months going frequently and an additional 3 months infrequent:The good:- Instructors are clearly knowledgeable about their craft.- For the most part, classmates and instructors were nice. They’ll come around and correct you on techniques which is helpful.- This is very much a place to be serious about dedicating yourself to this craft and if you have that dedication and mindset to keep going no matter what, this’ll probably work for you. Their reputation in competition speaks for itself. I’m marking this under “good” but will get into the other side of it in “ok” later- Professor Mikal heard me out about my issues with scheduling and tried to provide solutions. It did seem like he cared about more than just my money. The ok:- I didn’t feel like there was room for a beginner here. Everyone was so far beyond my level that I not only felt like I was never making ground with learning, but that I was hugely inconveniencing the rest of the class. If you’re experienced or extremely dedicated, this may not be an issue for you, but as a beginner who couldn’t dedicate my entire being to the craft due to my own life schedule it didn’t work for me.- The group classes were at a certain level (again) far beyond a beginner both in the technique and exercise portions. I understand having to appeal to all belt levels, but even some of the watered down versions of the techniques provided for newbies felt far above my own ability. There really should be some more groundwork classes in my opinion.- In my experience, if you don’t write down what you learned during group classes, it’s very easy to forget because of the complexity of some of the techniques (again, from a newbies perspective). To their credit, I was provided with a notebook and folder to do so.The bad:- Never received the gi I was promised upon signup. Brought this up with front desk multiple times.- Had to sit out in the middle of several warmup sessions because of my own level of fitness (felt like I had to throw up). Obviously that’s on me, but my issue is that occasionally I’d get a bit of flack for this from instructors or other students and I didn’t really appreciate it. I get pushing your students hard but if someone is dry heaving, they clearly need a break.- That $300 cancellation fee. Yikes. Feels like there’s really no purpose to it other than scaring people away from canceling and they do NOT budge on it no matter what your situation is. I did my best to explain my situation and why I was unable to come to class as often as I wanted (which for the record was due to a toxic job situation I quit not long after cancelling here) and to their credit was offered a discounted month to think things over. However, I still ended up paying the $300 in the end in additional to the other monthly fees and that hurt.- A few years ago, I was frequenting another Jiu Jitsu place in another state before I had to move to Austin and that place felt like family to me which helped a lot on my journey. Because of the above info, this place unfortunately didn’t give me that experience and when dedication is such a big part of going here, that was a big problem. In short: If you’re extremely dedicated or have some previous knowhow in BJJ, you’ll do fine. Aces just wasn’t for me.

My complaint with Aces mirrors what everyone else has said: their sales tactics. I came in for the free 30 day trial and only attended one class (that I booked through Class Pass (CP)). Ty was my trainer. He was very knowledgeable, professional, and courteous. He showed me three techniques and I found the class very interesting. But then the sales pitch... It was HIGHLY aggressive. I dont blame this entirely on Ty. Im sure punching people in the face with SELL SELL SELL is a company policy. I told him that I would rather book classes through CP and he said that wouldnt be conducive to proper training. He also said if CP became unprofitable for them, they would likely remove themselves from CP. Red Flag #1. I told him I didnt have the sign up fee at the moment, so he offered me a payment plan, which was nice but I still felt majorly pressured and wasnt sure if this was a good idea. He asked me to sit down and write out a monthly budget to find a way to fit it in. Red Flag #2. I told him I couldnt really afford a monthly membership at the prices offered because Im a single mother of two, so he lowered the monthly cost and gave a story about a single dad he knew who COULD make the payments. Red Flag #3. I told him that although I work in downtown Austin, I live in San Marcos so the gym would just be too far away for it to be worth my time. He assured me there would be noon classes at the downtown location. I came in at noon that day and there was no class and only two people sparing without guidance (because he was training me). Red Flag #4. Although I was VERY unsure, I signed the damn contract anyway because I figured he was giving me a good deal. Upon deeper reflection, I realized this really wasnt a good fit for me. I would have preferred to just book classes through CP and I feel like a moron for being pressured into a contract I didnt really want to sign. That following Monday, I called them to cancel my membership. I knew I was going to have to pay the $300 cancellation fee, fair enough. But they still wanted me to pay for the Gi and the sign up fee at a total of $150. For ONE CLASS... $450! They allowed me to pay off the fees in installments, which I appreciate, but they really need to reconsider their sales tactics. I would have been completely open to getting a membership, say in January, when the holidays were over, but they were so aggressive and so adamant about signing RIGHT NOW, that Im just not going back. Its so uncomfortable and awkward that Im not even going back for the Gi, even though I paid for it.
