This place and Lin have given my son a new confidence. The lines of communication are ALWAYS open. Lin has a relationship with each parent and child and wants each child to be a better whole person- not just BJJ wise. I cannot recommend them enough. Along with how affordable it is, the times are convenient, the gym is spotless and one on one attention to each child is like nothing weve had at any other gym. WE LOVE SINSITER. Plus, they have cool swag too!

Great coaching and impeccably clean facility. Sinister has a huge focus on creating stronger individuals without being too serious. Truly a family! If you want to be a serious competitor, Sinister is the place. If you want to learn to defend yourself, Sinister is the place. If you are a casual martial artist, Sinister is the place. Law enforcement officers owe it to themselves to train BJJ — Sinister is the place.I say this with almost 30 years of martial arts training, I have never trained at a school where I was treated like family until I met Prof. Hughs. Where your fellow students check in on you if you miss a few classes. Where you bond over post training meals or your teammates share their professional expertise to help each other fix what’s broken in our outside the gym worlds. We’re even nice to white belts.WHAT A TEAM!

Amazing culture. You will feel part of the family right away. Very welcoming. Professor Lin connects with all of his students and is a great teacher. Very affordable compared to other gyms in the area. Check the site for yourself. All of the prices are right there for you instead of having to come into the gym to get prices. No corporate feel which was huge for me.

I arrived at Sinister with previous experience and a blue belt tied around my waist from another school. Lin and crew didnt even skip a beat. They welcomed me with open arms and made me feel like a part of the team immediately. Jiu-Jitsu can be very tribal and its very rare that you find schools that welcome outside students with such kindness and humility. I dont have enough good things to say about Lin and Sinister.Over 2-years later, and this is now and forever my home school.

There arent enough good words to describe this gym. When I first signed my son up, the professor gave him 2 weeks to see if he even would like it without any up front costs or hidden fees to just come in and learn. My son fell in love with the class. He enjoys training and asks me to take him in without having to force him to go. The professor, Lin is so welcoming, open and funny, that he has even convinced me to now pick training back up where I left off. I never thought I would ever get back into it but Lin, his gym and the other people seem to just pull you in. I would like to tell everyone interested in training to give this gym a try, even if you have a gym. Lin and his team welcome any and all.

Man I can’t express how much I love this place and the martial arts it teaches. Professor Lin is amazing and makes you feel right at home from the get go. The whole group is a huge family and are all there for one thing and that’s to make you better. I trained a place in town before this and didn’t have this connection. The price isn’t outrageous and the facilities are so clean. I mean you are rolling around on possibly the cleanest floor I’ve ever seen. If you are even considering BJJ or just a solid workout. Go here. You will fit in no matter your age, physique, or skill level. I’m so happy I found this place.

I just got into bjj a few months ago after being persuaded by a friend to attend a free class at Sinister. Everyone was very cool and not once did i feel like i didnt belong, even though i clearly had no idea what i was doing. At first i started going to get a workout and lose some weight but i continue to go because i enjoy the atmosphere and the people around me. Lin is a great professor and i dont regret my decision to attend that first class.

Edit: Leaving the below original comment because it was true at the time. I continued financially supporting the gym throughout the pandemic, hoping Id have a place to go back to once I felt comfortable training again. Since then I was threatened by a member of the gym on the groups Facebook page. The instructor, when it was brought to his attention, just said that he cant control what everyone does or says. I cant in good conscience leave a 5-star review up for a place where a member is allowed to publicly threaten anyone, let alone another member.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------I wanted to get in better shape, but hate going to the gym and/or running. I knew I needed a class structure to push me both physically and mentally, so I started looking for BJJ gyms near me. Luckily this was one of the closest ones because it’s the perfect atmosphere for me.The people are relaxed and don’t mind joking around, but still train hard at the same time. Lin fosters that environment and makes everyone feel comfortable and welcome, while also keeping a clean environment to train in.I can’t imagine a better training environment for myself. Whether you’re trying to get into shape or want to be a competitive practitioner, this is a great choice for a BJJ gym in north Austin.

Excellent place to practice. This gym doesnt take itself too seriously, but is still serious in its dedication to learning. This is a place to improve regardless of level. I felt welcome since my first day. I recommend it to any person looking to learn.

Set in a warehouse off the beaten path, this gym is great! There’s dressing rooms, wait area and enough mat space to get a good roll in. My kids are currently enrolled in the jiujitsu program and have learned so much under Master Lin Hughes and brown belt Jorge Castaneda. They are pumped to workout everyday alternating Muay Thai with Guerilla MT instructor Bitsy Esparaza, and conditioning classes Monday through Thursday. They also offer adult classes.

Terrific gym, best workout of my life, friendliest, most welcoming crowd you could imagine. They offer a free week of classes, which is nice, because you can pack a lot of sessions in during that time and get a taste for what they’re offering. Their Fundamentals classes are top notch, and SInFit is tough and fun. I knew I wanted to join after the first class. I’d recommend it to anyone who wants something more personal than a stuffy, corporate BJJ experience. Also worth noting that their monthly rate is great compared to other gyms in Austin. Really glad I found this place.

Had a great experience dropping in for class at Sinister BJJ. I was in town for the weekend visiting family and wanted to get some training in. Lin and his students were extremely welcoming and I thoroughly enjoyed both classes I attended. I will definitely be stopping by whenever I’m in town again!

Been training with Lin since before Sinister was even a school. We have a super chill environment that is open to all diversity and body types, we are just here to support each other and learn BJJ. No drama no BS. If you are looking for a school in North Austin you won’t find a better group of folks imo. If you’ve been training a while and moved here, we got some killers too. Drop in for a class or on Thursday for our sparring day. If you want to compete we will get you ready, if you want to learn to defend yourself you will, and if you just want to get in shape Lin will get you the hard workouts. Join us!

LADIES!!!! If you are looking for a gym to train Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, this is an excellent location! I trained in Krav Maga for over a year & wanted to expand my BJJ training. I researched many dogos in the Austin surrounding area and SINISTER BJJ without a doubt was the best option for me!In early February 2020, I contacted the owner Lin Hughs (Black Belt) after he shared a sale post on Facebook for special pricing for medical workers like myself. He was very friendly & I was invited to try it out the classes FREE for one week and so I did.As a woman & beginner, from Day 1, I felt very comfortable not only with the other BJJ students but also Lin (owner/instructor). He is smart with a hilarious personality and makes his classes fun to attend. There is always music playing in the background & I personally like that. This place emits a positive vibe and you can see how everyone has big smiles after every class even though we are exhausted! The gym itself is great with a dressing room upstairs including a warm up area. The bathroom is downstairs with easy access during class if needed. Good membership prices and free Gi with a short 3 month contract. This is a hassle free environment with excellent customer service & plenty of parking. Most importantly, Lin & his staff disinfect after every class with an organic solution & keep the mats CLEAN!!!I highly recommend Lin Hughs & his staff of Sinister BJJ in Austin and as a woman, I am very lucky to have found this place to get my Brazilian Jiu Jitsu training.

Been training at Sinister with zero previous training for about 9 months. Lin is an awesome coach and makes class fun and my team mates couldnt be more helpful. My 2 boys are in the kids classes and absolutely love it. Kids class growing fast! They learn a lot more than jiu-jitsu, things like discipline and perseverance. Highly recommended!

After trying a couple of other Jiu Jitsu gyms I finally settled on this one for a few reasons. They are relatively new and I like the idea of being part of something that is growing. The instructors care about their students and genuinely want to see them grow and succeed. They have no contracts and no hidden fees or any other BS. I am just starting out and so far everyone Ive trained with there is extremely helpful while still providing a necessary level of butt kicking. Also the squad Gis look awesome. If you are looking for a new jiu jitsu gym or you are just starting out you should swing by and try this place out!
