I am a recent graduate of Carsten Institute of Cosmetology and Id like to say this school was my best choice so far. They offered night classes, which I needed. I graduated Feb 2018 and immediately found a job at a top salon with the schools help. The classes are in stages and the instructors take their time to make sure students are advancing at every level. The active salon environment got me acclimated to real life salon situations. I am confident enough to say upon graduating I was 100% prepaired for the professional world.Id specifically like to thank the lead instructor Mr. B and another instructor Ms. Olivia for acting as mentors to me. I knew that if I needed anything they were always willing to help. I want to thank them for giving me the tools I needed to be a successful stylist.

I’m a recent graduate from Carsten and I have to say this school is amazing , the instructors are hands on and very informative. You will learn so much in the classroom and on the clinic floor. This school has been very life changing for me because I have accomplished and gain so much experience and knowledge. I became confident in my craft but you do have to dedicated and willing to put the time in. The owner Kirsten has also been so helpful with a lot with advice and she’s very close to the students and knows everyone by name (LOL) shes really nice.She also recommended me to one of the top high end salons that I’m currently training for. I loveeeee my school!!!! I graduated in December from this amazing cosmetology school. I have to say this was the best decision I’ve ever made in my life and the best school. I met amazing instructors and met an amazing woman by the name of Ms.Gloria who cares about her students and prepares you not only for the beauty business but also prepares you for life and that’s priceless. We’re the only school that has competitions, contests, and many more activities that prepare you for your career as a cosmetologist. This was my first choice of school, when I visited I made up my mind quickly and said this is the one! I loved the environment everyone was welcoming from the beginning to the end.

Probably the best cosmetology experience Ive had as a customer! I arrived an hour early for my appointment and was able to get in right away. My stylist was somewhat quiet but very nice. I have a TON of hair, so putting foils in always takes a long time. I was here for a total of 4 hours, which is a bit longer than I wouldve liked, but Im still so impressed with the result! The color is lovely, and I didnt go broke getting my roots touched up. Overall great service!

Oh gosh. Where do I begin? Im a high school senior from the Bronx, I came and got a beautiful dress and I also came to do my make up and hair. My hair and make up came out looking wonderful. So much better than I couldve ever done and Im so glad I came. The service was ALSO wonderful. Crystal(the person attending me) was so patient with me and listen to my constant rambling. I personally dont wear too much make up but Im so glad that I found this place. Crystal used the perfect amount of make up and enhanced my face rather than plaster make up on my face like some places do. Id totally recommend for anyone who is looking for a great look for prom or any special occasion to come and invest their time here. I really love it!!!!

I transferred to Carsten after a super negative experience with a previous school. Feeling slightly intimidated at first being how this is a very upscale-high end establishment, I quickly adapted to this very kind and well educated environment. This school prepares you for working in every aspect of the beauty industry. You learn dozens if haircuts, many different professional ways to color, and every month a guest from different workplaces (salons, makeup artists, facialist) will come in to do a demo and chat with everyone about their field. The school keeps students creatively challenged with interesting competitions monthly and more importantly prep you and help you with finding employment. I wanted to get my license to only further my career in makeup but ended finding a new passion for hairstyling I didnt think I had. After spending a few short months here Im graduating with a few employment opportunities and a new career road to follow. I had such a great experience here. Alejandro was my stylist and he did a fantastic job with my hair. It was way better than I expected. I get very comfortable with him. He made my dry, dull hair come to life. I definitely recommend Carsten’s for all of your beauty needs.

The best investment I ever made! Nothing but praises for this institution. From the classrooms, to the curriculum, to the staff and teachers...Carsten is the best cosmetology school there is.

The student assigned to me needs to learn how to wash hair better and how to style curly hair. She was too overly concerned about the cut and not the styling of curly hair, which is not good follow-through in the real world. Two things the institute needs to improve upon: first, they had no roller set service, which is a staple service in any Latino or African American salon; secondly, I think that students should do the initial consultation in presence of their instructor, especially when English is not their first language; third, the client should be able to give feedback to the instructor directly or through a note or app about their experience so as to help the student improve. I have curly hair that is recently henna treated, which renders it drier, which I told the student (whom I suspect is Russian speaking). I requested, in presence of the instructor, a leave-in conditioner; they didnt have it (😐 what??? youre a hair salon and you dont do roller sets nor have leave-in conditioners, but I digress... ) so ordinary conditioner was used haphazardly, in addition to mousse, and some hair serum, drying with the aid of a diffuser. My curls were a frizzy mess at the end so I put it in a ponytail, the a hat, and paid my $22 plus $5 tip. I would not recommend just walking into this place but establish an appointment and specifically request a student trained in the service you desire. Its hit or miss because theyre students, so quality control is challenging. Students need to simulate real-world hair textures and conditions, especially of hair textures that are totally different than their own. The unfortunate result of this is that this is the second time Ive had bad results with a hair dresser that is Eastern European, so my confidence in them is now nil. They just dont know how to do my hair. Going back to Dominicans to do my hair, or a Devacurl trained hair dresser.

I just visited Carsten for the first time today and Im very impressed. The student stylist asked me what I wanted done, listened, consulted an instructor, and cut my hair exactly the way I asked. The cut is better than some Ive paid triple for. I will definitely return.

In 2016, I made one of the best decisions of my life enrolling in the cosmetology program at Carsten Institute. At the time i was working a full time job and chose the part time program. I mention this because juggling a business career and attending school was never easy. The instructors at Carsten alongside Director Ms. Gloria made it at all cost possible for me to achieve.At no point did my experience there feel minimal. My questions were always answered and i left a well knowledgeable hair stylist. Everyone there always had the best intentions for my success and all the other students. I was challenged to be better everyday and to believe in myself fully. That’s something i will never forget.I learned about Carsten institute on an online research. I was attending another school that gave me a horrific first day experience. I remember calling Ms. Gloria explaining my situation and that i would really love to get started at Carsten but i didn’t know how i could make it possible. Ms. Gloria said to me “When can you come in? You will be a student at this institute, don’t worry about anything.” I started my first day less than a week later.Ms. Gloria and Kirstin always had open door policies for every student. They are the absolute best listeners i could remember throughout my lifelong education.Mr. B, and Ms. Gloria made sure that students were networking with salon owners, took part in events, and charity work throughout the city. After touring many other schools, Ive decided to complete my 1000 hours at Carsten. When I arrived for my school tour I saw instructors and students working together on clients. Immediately I decided that this was the school for me. Ive learned alot through out my time from every instructor there. All the instructors are AMAZING! They really do care and have deep passion for the business. When I started I knew very little, but, after the instructors helped me I didnt just learn alot of knowledge, but they really helped me to boost my confidence and now I just wanna do it all! Another great thing about Carsten is that the clientale is very wide doing all types of services, which allows you to gain enough practice on everything. I had gone to a cardiac surgery school for my triple bypass a couple years ago and couldnt tell the difference between the job they did and that of a board-certified heart surgeon, so I figured it wasnt much of a risk to do the same for getting my split ends trimmed. As with the chest procedure I had, there was a supervisor checking everything, the work was great and it only cost a fraction of what a fully-trained, experienced professional would.

It was a very beautiful experience. The ladies were very nice and understandable if you are tinderheaded. My hair was left silky soft and still hydrated. I had a nice conversation with my hairdresser and she was very friendly. She washed my hair throughly and straightened it just enough.

What an Amazing experience at the Carsten Institute of Cosmetology!! Since my first day that I called asking about the hair and makeup classes, the receptionist was extremely polite, took my info and a couple minutes latter an employee from admissions called me back they were so professional to answer my call that was impressive ! I visit several schools before Carsten but as soon I got to the Madison Avenue institute I knew this was my best option !! The process was super easy Paul from financial aid was very clear and explained everything I need to know as student the admissions rep and Ms Gloria the Manager were very welcoming and helpful too. Just dont go here for any services. I went for a cut and highlights and left with very orange hair. They tried to tone it twice and got it wrong and I had to argue with them about the fact that it was orange. My scalp has also hurt since. They dont know what theyre doing there. I was there for FIVE hours and left absolutely miserable, $111 poorer and will now have to go to another salon to have it fixed. Worst hair experience of my life.

I only went in for an orientation but after looking through their products and speaking to the student and instructor I agree with several reviews stating this isn’t a good place for naturally curly hair. The instructor was advising against adding layers and describing what my hair would look like should that be done. I generally get a devacut so I know how the shape of my hair will come out. The products all have sulfate, parabens and harsh alcohols. Additionally, after I was advised of the $58 fee (plus $20 for each extra bowl of dye and I have a lot of hair) I asked about products/styling curls and the student told me I could Always bring my own products and diffuse my own hair or “wash and go”. The whole process would be about an hour... Wait... so you mean to tell me I’m paying for products, using my own products AND styling/drying my own hair or leaving with it soaked? I took $30 and purchased 3 bottles of dye after I left. No thank you. This is supposed to be a learning experience for the student. I am Entrusting someone inexperienced with my hair type which is nerve wrecking in itself. It’s over priced for what it is but if I am going to spend 60-100 on dye expect to have my hair dried and styled with salon products so I can See if there are any mistakes BEFORE I walk out.

I am a recently graduated student. I feel tremendously lucky that I was able to attend this school. Not only did I gain skills and knowledge and the ability to create a career, I gained a beautiful family. From the director to the instructors and even the custodian, I have made lifelong connections with everyone here. Better connection than with my biological family. The Instructors are professional and friendly; always ready to help and answer any question. Class size is small and there are a few different schedules to take your classes.In addition to textbook and mannequin required basic work, we also get hands on practice on clients, monthly competitions that push us to be creative, and the opportunity to participate in fashion shows is truly priceless. If you ask, (and sometimes even if you dont ask) there are constant job offers. There is also an elective beginners make-up class.Ive enjoyed every single day being there! Thank you so much Ms Gloria for being so kind and pushing me on, Mr Benjamin for your swift and professional attitude, Mr Darvell for your meticulousness, passion, and wit, Ms Briana (for godsakes how do you spell your name?) for your persistence and patience however taxed, Mr Roman for your easy personality and extra help, Mr Joel I thought I knew everything about blow dries and tolerance; apparently I didnt. (Still waiting for those pics) Carsten for your vision and kind smile always, and Kirsten, you beautiful soul, keep at it. I love you.

I used to go there for a whole 6 months and I paid $20 for a shampoo and wash. Then I stop and I went back this week. When the student gave me the paper to sign it was $25 then mr. B went to see her and I heard him say why $25 she said because her hair is long. I didn’t say anything. Then when it was time to pay, she say it’s 35 because you have a lot hair and next time it will be $50. If you are not happy with that go see mr. b. The price is not expensive so I did not say anything, but you cannot Charge a price and then switch it like it was my first time. They should of tell me upfront it would be more. Plus the student took more than two hours in my hair and I had to blow dry my own hair cuz I was getting irritated. I got there since 4:15pm and I had an appointment and no one available until 5:15pm. Then I left at 9:15pm with poor result and non professional student who made the price like she owes the place. I will never be back to this place again.

I graduated from Carsten and the one I will always remember is the teachers and the everyone else is someone in the school is amazing and helpful when comes to pushing the students and I am so happy that I graduated from there.

I asked for 6 inches off. I showed him a photo of it passed my shoulders, it doesnt even TOUCH my shoulders. I dont care if it looks 10 times better or if I look sexy and grown (things I was trying to be convinced of when I was crying) it was NOT his decision to make. It was my hair that I spent time growing out and it was taken away from me.Due to my large crocodile tears and his great mistake Mr. B spent the rest of the night with me. Mr.B did an excellent job. Mr. B those two stars are for you. Also thank you for not charging me.Also pro tip, Mike if someone doesntlike their cut dont make jokes about gluing back it on and tell them that you actually made it longer than they wanted.Its 24 hours latee and i still in ears. Please cwhat you do before you snip.

I started going to the Cartsen Institute around 2014 to do my full roots retouch highlight, was pleased with the result and still go back to Carsten when I need a hair service! Its definitely the best price for the service you can have in Manhattan, and although the service is performed by students and it takes longer to have the service done than others salons I have been to, they are always under the professors supervision, and they are always willing to help the clients to achieve the results we want!

I’m a Former studentFinancial aid did not explain the full details of what I was signing up. It wasnt until I received a letter in a mail that I took out several loans for that school. The school manager Gloria rushed me to sign all the paperwork even the contract. No one explained my contract to me neither. I’m so glad I left when I did and went to a new school which I just graduated from.

I stumbled upon this salon through the raved reviews Ive seen on google. I previously went and had my hair bleached by an amazing student named Malaika. She took her time to made sure she knew what color I wanted and absolutely nailed it! She is amazing! She was really precised with making sure the color was maticulously on the section of hair I wanted, as I rock a fade. Due to that wonderful experience I was thrilled to come back today to leave extremely disappointed. The student that did my hair today named Olivia rendered the services I asked of so quickly. She did not know what she was doing with the coloring, she did not do a thorough job washing my hair and as the teacher Olivia specifically told her to massage the treatment in my hair she couldnt even do that. Overall, a waste of $40.00 and will not be back due to the lack of professionalism from the student Olivia. She clearly did not take the experience of coloring me seriously. Extremely disappointed!!!

Soooo happy I decided to come here! Mr. B and Coleen took my orange hair disaster and gave me the most beautiful balayage/ombré look that I was after. From the moment I walked in they were professional, friendly, and knowledgeable and made me feel like I was in good hands. They exceeded all of my expectations and I could not be happier with the results. Mr. B gave excellent directions to Coleen without taking over the appointment and still let her learn and figure it out. She followed his lead and did a wonderful job! This school is slightly pricier than the others but it is worth every single penny. I will keep coming back for sure!

I give this place 5 stars because the two times I have walked out of there with a killer haricut, and this last time with a sickening color job and you CANNOT beat the prices. Now I admit, being a school you are trying your luck with the student you get assigned to and I was very lucky (and grateful) to get an attentive and talented student. But my first visit he was very green and a little hesitant but he took direction well and the bottom line is these students do not make a move without the careful consultation of the very skilled professors. When the service is finished, the instructors will go over the work and smooth out even the most minor of imperfections so you are basically getting a professional haircut. Settle the price before you begin so everything is on the up and up. I highly recommend it and am just torn between following the student Ive been seeing when he graduated and getting placed with another student and staying close to these phenomenal professors! What a conundrum to have!

I am in shock from this place specially Gloria’s attitude. My friend called me to be his model. He is studying.After my coming they start to creat new rules maybe in order to take money from me. For example, they blamed my friend that he didn’t make an appointment. After reading rules that he singed up before we found that they have to do it for him on front desk. HahaBut it’s was just beginning. They ask me to pay for service. And again they didn’t tell my friend about that. Crazy! You can believe that only hair washing is $10! For model!! I am not talking about prices for hair cut and others. But they didn’t approve that they told him about this regulations! No papers! Nothing!I can understand that everything happens but I didn’t expect that lady Gloria started to yield on me. I was super calm and just ask about official documents where they have information about the price list for models. After this she started to scream! Seriously!After all this I just left. They didn’t give him to start his work. As I know they do not bring models for students and as my experience showed do not give opportunitie to bring anyone.I think that something illegal there. Poor my friend! He paid a lot of money(

My first day here in registration i knew this was the school for me. Everyone was so kind and humble and helpful. I entered Carsten institute shy and quiet not as much confident. Now I am the most confident I have ever had in years. Carsten institute didn’t just teach me about working with others and doing hair. I’ve learn so much about myself. Love for myself and truly being okay with everything about myself. Guys dont come here if you have curly/textured hair! They will literally not know what to do with your hair, and they will look at you in a weird way once you explain to them what you want to do with your hair. When i walked in there, the girls were gossiping about my hair right in front of me! making me feel so bad about myself. I have never walked into such an unprofessional hair salon ambience before. Good luck getting jobs in the real world because with that attitude you will get nowhere. They should be there to learn about the customers hair, not just gossip about it and do eachothers hair. On a positive note, I would like to thank the girl that brought me in because despite everything, she gave me a good balayge/ombre to my curly hair! She knew that my hair was a challenge, but decided to work with me anyways to give me what I wanted. Her risk paid off, and she learned new tricks about curly hair and that is the attitude that every professional stylist should have! The other girls need to learn from her! Although, I doubt I would go back, I came out with great results despite the awful experience that I had.

Its ok as long as you clarify what you want and they dont over charge you

I started going to the Cartsen Institute in 2010 as a client. Fast forward to 2012, I was enrolled as a full time student. Im very thankful for this institution, its founders and instructors. They taught me more than one of the best skill-sets (and oldest professions).The instructors genuinely love their careers and have a fun teaching style. They were very strict on meeting homework/project timelines (bc in real salon life theres no time for bs or excuses), there are a lot of fun competitions, seminars, extra courses to take & add to your resume (hair extensions, balayage, make-up certification, fashion week, etc.), and one of my favorite classes was their business course.Its very important to learn the ins/outs of a salon. From the very first steps--making your resume, cover letter & interviewing-- to a full on project on how to own your salon business.If you go in with a 100% gonna give it my all attitude you will come out successful and have a lot of connections into some of the best salons in the city.BIG BIG BIG thanks to Cartsen, Kirsten, Mr. B, Mrs. Brianna, Mrs. Gloria and Mr. Darvel.Learn to teach.
