What a gem! Our daughter started when she was 4 years old and was shy for that first class, but Ms. Sherise quickly got her out of her shell and skipping to class each week! The classes are fun and well-organized, and the kids have a blast while learning important skills for on and off the mat. Meg is so kind and responsive, the whole crew is wonderful!

My 2 children started when they were 4 and 7 years old. I was unsure of their ability to focus and follow directions but Ms Sherise and Ms Meg were wonderful with them and they excelled. We started in the midst of Covid so we were outside in the park. I was truly impressed with how organized they were and how professional they kept it even though we were in the park. We have now transitioned inside and I’m impressed at how much my children are learning. My daughter has excelled in her ability and is now in the black belt intermediate class. Her confidence and her excitement grows every class. Her self control has improved more than any other skill she has learned. My son still struggles with focus and has been having trouble behaving in school. I have been working with Ms Sherise and Ms Meg and they have been constantly reinforcing good behavior and helping discipline band behavior. He now has been getting good behavior stickers in school and has continued to earn stripes on his martial arts belt. I truly feel that he has grown as a person during his time in Martial arts.I not only highly recommend modern martial arts upper west side for their teaching of martial arts but for helping raise my children with self respect, self control and a sense of community.

Our 6-year old son has been going to MMA for over a year, and he has enjoyed learning martial arts from several amazing instructors. He has grown from initially being resistant to join in to completing each class with a smile, leaving each class excited to showcase what he learned, volunteering to lead the class and even started taking their Black Belt Training classes. This all happened due to the hands on, caring approach from the team of instructors there.

This martial arts school is a gem in NYC. All coaches are knowledgable, amazing professionals and most of all, super caring and loving teachers. Kids love to go to Karate. They learn about discipline, focus, control, and they have fun by practicing the art of Karate. Coaches helps kids building self-esteem and helps them believing in themselves. They deserve everything good that comes to them.

My 4 years old is in his second years here. Teachers are amazing! Perfect mix of patience, authority and fun too! Of all the activities we do, karate teachers are the best at what they do. Only complain is that space is little tight to go in and out but I know real estate is expensive in NYC so I understand.

Update: This issue has been rectified however I am keeping the post to keep people awareWe signed our 3 year old son up after he had a trial class in February. Upon discussing membership I thought the one time payment was too high so we decided we would pay and go on a month to month basis. We never went to ANY class after the (free) trial class because surprise surprise; a 3 year old changed his mind about karate. It is now March 28th and were down $400 because they took out of our bank account again. Im so turned off I declined the freeze membership option because the last thing I want is to ever associate with this company again none the less have my child present. Paying for a service and not receiving it is deemed fraud. Now, there has to be a form sent to me to request canceling the membership and then they will have to decide whether it is accepted or denied. This is the worst customer service I have ever experienced.I’ve been trying to contact anyone there all day and keep getting ignored. I have just submitted my complaint to the BBB.

I took the Hip + Fit classes at MMA. I loved that Hip + Fit was an all women class too. The classes are so much fun, a perfect workout, great stress relief, and the staff are all wonderful. Sherise is also amazing and there is always an amazing playlist. I had no kickboxing experience when I started. I highly recommend the program and MMA to anyone interested in kickboxing!

My family has been apart of MMA for over 5 years. My son trains in mixed martial arts as well as Brazilian jui jitsu. What we love the most is the commitment to understanding each childs temperament and creating a positive environment where they may grew and develop their skills. They communicate well with the parents and focus on discipline, building confidence and respect in their training. They also offer so much more, like camp, childrens events and birthday parties. Coach Cherise has built a dynamic team of talented instructors and we recommend MMA for anyone(child/adult) looking for the perfect place to train.

Caveat emptor. For almost a full year our now 5 year old son was enrolled in classes. We even hosted his birthday party there, since he was very into Martial Arts (and Ninjago). The studio itself is small and a bit rundown, and we were not all that impressed by what we observed. Some of the instructors were OK, but others were mediocre at best. The schedule options are limited (one class for each age bracket offered several days/week), but we stuck with it for as long as we could. They will charge you a monthly fee for 2-3 classes/week, which is fine. The problem is that if/when you need or want to cancel (i.e., when your childs schedule changes and you can no longer make it to the one session they offer for your childs age group), they claim that you are locked into a long-term contract, and keep charging your credit card. Customer service is non-existent, and they outsource their billing to a company called ASF Payment Solutions (a 3rd party billing agency). The whole setup feels a bit sketchy. Also, be aware that they will nickel and dime you for small up-charges all the time (e.g., there is a graduation ceremony every few months at the end of class, and you are charged a fee each time over and above the monthly class fee). Definitely would not recommend this place - there are much better options available on the UWS.

If you’re looking for a one-of-a-kind, super-fun, active party experience that actually inspires kids to be their best then check out Modern Martial Arts (UWS). Yes it’s all rolled into one as Head Instructor Sherise (who is enviable for her skills in handling our kids, yes ma’am) leads the kids through a series of martial arts moves designed to boost confidence, strength and truly feel like a warrior—the headband you get upon arrival is everything! My party for our 5yr old boy was 2 hours of pure joy, complete with bouncy castle, board breaking, dance party and dodge ball. MMA provides décor, food, and great goody bags—plushy nunchucks! Parents still talk about it. It’s a must for any age!
