Students and teachers are nice but thats all they got going for them. I was there for 3 hours for a simple cut. The students are NOT ready to cut actual customers hair. I asked for a u-shaped cut with layers and almost left with a blunt cut until the teacher took over. Student didnt have a clue what a u-shaped cut was. She also cut my hair dry (which I didnt mind) so it was very obvious that my hair did not have layers.

BEWARE OF THIS PLACE. The people are very nice, but that’s really the only thing going for them. My hair is way unevenly bleached and they refused to fix it after I tried to explain multiple times that it was way brighter in some spots than others. I was there for 5 HOURS and the worst part is that it doesn’t say on their website that they charge extra for each bowl of lightener. They used 7 bowls of it on my hair without telling me so I had to pay $119 for this after expecting to pay around $50.

Worst experience ever. I am a regular customer who has been going here for 3 years straight. Today I went there and they tell me they cannot find my name. I showed them the text message that I received after booking the appointment and they tell me they dont have my name on the list for today and so Ill have to come back some other time.I have my graduation walk today and I told them specifically and they told me they cannot do anything for their fault. A horrible experience and I am never going back there. Check 3 times before your appointment to make sure you have your name on their register.

Never had a bad experience with them until today. Hair looks as orange as possible with brown spots. Came in because I wanted my hair ginger all around with highlights and lowlights. Couldn’t do it because my hair was too short but if so I could have simply been given the color all over. NO, instead they suggest what they think is best and I agree because I know no better now my hair looks fiery orange and brown. NOT. WHAT. I. ASKED. FOR. If it wasn’t for the other customers saying they liked the color, I would have cried right then and there in the chair. Not to mention this is my first time coming back since chopping my hair off and I come back with split ends which they make sure to make you feel horrible about. So I say sure cut the ends, the girl I have is chopping way more than what she and the teacher said would be cut. I’ve grown my hair out just for them to cut even more off.Highly displeased. Cried in the car after having my fiancé ask to see my hair. He went to try to get my money back, but I told him there’s no use. They don’t refund. Instead, you’re lucky if they offer to fix it at a later time but who would trust them giving their work ethic as well as spending hours in a salon chair for something that should have been so simple?!?!And that’s another thing. My appointment was at 11AM and the actual “work,” on my hair didn’t start until 12:00PM. I seriously have to wear a hat for real now!!!Last time I came and got color done they made sure I wasn’t leaving out looking like a “zebra with stripes of colors,” so what was so different this time? I asked for ginger and they clearly don’t know what that color is because I ended up looking like a fox in the end. I can’t believe they looked at my hair and said that it was good. Oh and that “learning leader” Tangela or whatever the hell her name is...stay away from her. She has a serious attitude problem and I’m convinced she knows nothing about hair. This establishment is nothing but a playground. All they’re going to do is play in your hair and try to make you feel good about it.AND THE FRONT DESK IS RUDE!!! They’re inconsiderate and only care about money. I should have walked out for the work that was done on my hair. If it’s not their hair, they don’t care. Sure, it’s a school of students but when significant damage is done there needs to be a refund given, money knocked off, or a free service. Like I said, who the hell wants to come back to have a horrible experience fixed when they couldn’t even get it right the first time? What’s the point of teachers if they’re not going to do their job? This place is truly undeserving of even one star.I can’t wait until they get the right customer who tells them about themselves and refuses to offer payment for the trash work that they do...students or not. They all make sure they look good though. Professionals where?Unbelievable.

Reviewing as a a salon guest, not student. I have a high maintenance haircut and color (short, platinum blonde) that requires a salon visit every 6-8 weeks. I love the school because it makes my look relatively affordable. That being said, I’ve visited this location at least 4-6 times now and have had a variety of experiences. I don’t recommend having a newbie student if you can avoid it. My appointment lasted 5 hours that time. With a more experienced artist you can still plan to spend 4 hours here for my type of style. Nuts, I know. Some students are chatty, others say nothing. Some are fantastic at washing hair, others will literally make you bleed (like last time I was in; I wish the salon had an exit review because seriously, last time wasn’t great). Some can blow dry better than a seasoned stylist and others make you want to run away or call security. Don’t hesitate to say something and always try to request someone you like. Be ready for your favorite student to graduate and move on to bigger and better things.Overall - I’ve been pretty happy. The educators are amazing and are able to help the student create the desired look under their guidance.

Everyone was very professional and nice. I was there on time and I only waited 5 min. Make sure you get an email/text confirmation for the appointment.I go with basic expectations of a trim and blow dry. If the student is capable, I ask for more of a style: layers, etc. Students have always been nice. I realize it will take at minimum 2 hours. If I need a real extensive style/cut, I will go to a more experienced salon/hairdresser and pay way more for it. You get what you pay for.

Bad experience and will not be returning. I went to this location just to have my side haircut reshaved (it grew out after a month of new growth). The instructor asked the student if she felt comfortable doing the shave and the student confirmed she was. I was asked what number shave I wanted (#1) and thus she started. When she finished, my hair was so uneven. I HONESTLY did not think you could mess up with simply shaving someones head, but I was proven wrong. I told the student it was uneven and patchy so she tried to fix it.... WITH SCISSORS. WHAT?! At that point, I asked to take the razor and fixed it myself. If I was going to do my own hair, whats the point of the student and instructor being there and whats the point of me paying for a service I have to end up doing myself? The time before this, I asked for a simple wash, blow dry, and press. Also was a nightmare since they obviously didnt know how to work with curly hair and had 3 students work with it. I figured doing something as simple as a razor shave would be simple enough this time around, but that is far from the truth. Dont go to this place unless youre okay with your hair possibly being ruined or you have bone straight hair.

I had to tell her just the roots. I went couple time to the Lombard location (I was very happy with them) so I ask to call n get the formula so it will match the color! After she did that, she was so surprise why they used the formula, even the instructor made the comment. This made me feel so uncomfortable. I asked if this formula would match my color, they said yes! I had 3 different students putting color in my hair 😳 wow! And it took them over an hour! It’s not worth it of going here, if you have car drive to the other location!!I feel like they talking students from phase 1 who just started Bc it amazing how they don’t know to apply basic color

Worse hair cut I have ever gotten.... literally have been crying for the past 24 hours. Had a panic attack in their bathroom which was gross by the way. I spent two year growing my hair out. Just wanted it trimmed, was told 2 inches would be taken off... it’s now like a bob at my chin.. way more then 2 inches. I don’t blame the student I blame the teacher for not watching over. Like the whole experience was so uncomfortable just sitting with my head in the sink for 15 minutes with the towel on my neck or anything it was like torture I was just praying for it to be over. My hair was being literally ripped out of my head it was being brushed so hard. Like has no when been trained how to like brush hair? I literally saw chunks of my hair coming on. On top of all this I have spent $1000’s of dollars to keep my colored hair healthy. They ruined it in one day, it is 1000 times more unhealthy now it feels Fried and my whole head looks like a split end now. I cannot stop crying and now I have to figure out where to buy a wig. Saving the money by coming here is just not worth it if you care about your hair. The girl next to me hair looked horrible as well I could tell she hated hers too.

Ive been coming here for a few years now and up until today, I loved this place. The instructors/leaders were great and because of them the students did a pretty decent job under their careful watch, Today was a mess. They paired me up with someone who clearly didnt know anything about working with my my type of hair. I have mainstream textured hair. Its wavy/straight. Nothing too hard to work with usually. Except that the student today was having a really hard time working with my hair. It was clear that she was not used to working on hair with my type of texture, which is fine--its a school, its a learning process I get it. Thats why I set aside two hours when I go to Paul Mitchell School because I know they are students. But where on earth was her mentor/leader for most of the cut? MIA. Thats where. Sure she shows up at the end to try and placate me assuring me that she can help her student fix/style my hair but at the point Ive already wasted nearly two hours of my life and I really dont have time to waste another minute. I told her that her student didnt know how to work with my type of hair but that the haircut was fine. Then I got home and saw more closely the mess they made of my hair. I dont even want to name the student because its not her fault. Its her mentors fault for not doing her job. Ive been coming here for years and this was the first time I saw a completely inept mentor. If this is the direction the school is going, I am never going back.. I used to recommend this place to all of my friends and co-workers. Never again Paul Mitchell School. Im done. Thankfully my mother has offered to pay the $120 that its going to take to fix the disaster that I paid for a cheap price of $18. She took one look at my hair and immediately offered to pay to have it fixed, thats how bad it was.I know some people will say you get what you paid for. Heres the thing, I used to walk out of the Paul Mitchell School with haircuts that I would have paid $100 for because they were that good. That was only reason I kept coming back, because they did a good job and even some of the salons that charge you $100 dont always do as good of a job as the Paul Mitchell students USED to do. So my advice is to save your pennies, friends, because getting my hair cut this weekend isnt costing me $18, its costing $138 plus tip. Thanks for nothing, Paul Mitchell The School Chicago.

Overall a great value! As with all hair schools, your haircut will take longer than a traditional one because of the instruction involved. Be prepared for at least an hour and a half, even for simple hair styles. Be very vocal about what you want, bring pictures! Their products smell fantastic. They also have a reward system, basically you earn points towards product if you pre-schedule your haircuts (kinda like the dentist).

My visit was great from start to finish! The managers/ supervisors began my appt by letting me know my hair was damaged and may not react well to being permed. They let me know all that may happen, but ultimately left the decision up to me. I decided to go through with the perm regardless of the risk. They then introduced me to my stylist Leslie. I cannot praise this girl enough! Her rolling was 5 stars, even the most experienced hairdresser ive had did not roll my hair in that great of a curl pattern and so consistently tight all around. I can tell she was popular because she had a request during my appointment! Washing my hair for the first time after the perm was great as well. Thats always when you can tell how the curls will wear for the next few months. They were so voluminous and tight from the root to the ends. If there was one thing I would change, it would be the payment at the end. They did not let me know I needed to add tip before swiping my card, and there is no prompt on the card reader as well. I asked to add tip at the end like it usually is at salons, restaurants etc.. and was told I could not add it at the end. With no cash on hand, that wasnt great. Overall, I had a great experience and will definitely recommend this place!

I should have known something was off when my hair stylist brought a buzz-trimmer to my hair, saying, dont worry...Im not going to buzz all your hair off...I just need to straighten this line out. Im 29 - in all of my years of hair cuts, Ive never seen a stylist use one of these implements. When all was said and done, a FOOT of my hair had been cut off. It is now at my collar bone. Whats worse, is after the learning leader looked it over and doctored it up, it still had some major fly aways and was blunt/completely lacking shape.Their only recompense was to let me come in to have another student cut it, because that is their policy. After my experience, I wouldnt allow their best and brightest near a single strand of my hair.I had to go to a pro salon to be comfortable being seen in public after this cut. Not only that, but I had completely lost my entire look that I had worked so many years to grow.Do yourself a favor and fork over the dough for a legit hair cut. Run away as fast as you can. The students they put on the floor are not prepared to be working with anything other than wigs just yet. And their learning leaders are barely more equipped.

Ive been going to Paul Mitchell for seven (7) years. I have had more positive experiences than negative. What I do know is that the learning leader is key, unless the future professional is an above avg student. My usual services are color, highlights and cut, but I recently decided to go somewhere else for cuts because I wear my hair very short along the sides and back, & its curly. I am not always confident in the students abilities to cut short hair styles. However, my color is 8 out 10 great, and when there were problems, they were easily fixable. For first-timers and newbies (unless youre in Phase 2), if the learning leader is not checking on the student periodically, inquire on there whereabouts, and ask them to be more present.

I was amazed how unprepared the student that I got was, it took her an extremely long time to get a balayage on my hair done. I don’t ever have that much hair! I was there from 9:45 until 2:10 pm and I had to leave with my hair wet because I didn’t have another hour to get it dried. She left bleach in my hair for about 3 hours and now it’s very dry (I understand that there is a hair breakage when you bleach and I’ve done it before). In the beginning they tell you the price of the job and that they will tell you in case they will use any extras. At the check out I had the surprise: she had use a 3rd bowl of bleach that I had to pay for and I wasn’t informed of it prior, but because I was in a rush I couldn’t disagree with that. It’s insane that they let their students leave product so long, I think I would’ve get the same results or even better if I’ve done it at home by myself.I would definitely think twice about getting back there to get any kind of coloring done, the girl in front of me also had a bad result and the one by my side didn’t look very happy herself.

Excellent Service, professional Staff. Phase II student Geneva did a fabulous job exactly what I wanted and I got exactly the cut and I style I wanted. Highly recommended.

I was very upset with the services I received. Ive dying to get a cut and color. First of all, I want to point out that my cut took two hours long! Not only did it take a long time but my stylist did a poor job. He took too much off and it was very crooked. Now I would be fine with it if the supervisor actually bothered to tell him what he did wrong and fix it, but she didnt. My appointment was already taking too long, and they started to rush my stylist. Next was my color. They assigned another stylist to help apply my color. She came over and asked me if I was late for my appointment and thats why my color was so late! Thats really rude when I was 15 minutes early for my appointment! They ended up charging me for 3 extra bowls because they wanted to get done with me faster because it was more convenient for them. The color I wanted was the red-brown color and I even asked if you would be able to tell if it would be red once it was done. My hair color barely changed. I wanted it to be a brighter red and the color I got is not even close to what I asked for. My stylist also complained about his superiors in front of me which I feel you shouldnt do in front of a customer. No one even bothered to ask to fix it when I expressed how unhappy I was. At the end, I just wanted out of there. Im deeply disappointed with the service I received.

I ;have been going to Paul Mitchell for over 4 years.. My hair has never looked better. The standards here are high. Every stylist that Ive met has gone on to a great Salon. Its more than a School. These people really know what theyre doing. Unlike some of the Oak Street shops, the place is friendly & comfy. Its worth the travel time I incur (45 minutes) for agreat place.Kendall Malloy.

Ive been going to Paul Mitchell the school for many years now. The services provided are high quality as well as the products available. As its a school it does take some time, so be prepared to wait. However what you get for the money is well worth the wait! The only problem Ive ever had was when I splurged and went with a phase 2 student. I didnt notice any knowledgeable difference, it cost more, and they ended screwing up my hair color. I will always go to a phase 1 because of this. however like I said, great experiences all around!

For all my black girls, be careful. Im natural and I went to get a blowdry and trim and the guy I got didnt know what he was doing at all. He didnt know how to handle my hair, how to wash it, how to cut it, and he didnt even blow dry it properly. I left out with chunks of the front of my hair gone and tears on my face. Even the woman that was suppose to be walking around helping the students didnt know what she was doing. Its obvious the students there dont get practice on every type of hair. If you decide to still go to this place ASK FOR A BLACK PERSON. If not, you will be very disappointed and angry. Im never going back again!

Absolutely no.I emphasized subtle coloring techniques when I came in as I am a brunette. I made the comment that I don’t look well with blonde highlight. When I was showing her inspiration pictures, the instructor asked what I specifically likes about each and I made it VERY clear I wanted subtle color and a change in style. I did say I wasn’t super picky about what happened within those parameters, but what I received was a complete mess.I showed the stylist and instructor a “painted on” looking BROWN highlights with a medium length layered haircut. What I ended up with is a one length, bleach blonde hair styler with the worst highlights I have ever seen in my entire life. The highlights are halfway down my hair with very distinct lines of where she applied the brush marks. The instructor made multiple comments insinuating that she knew the girl messed up (for example, ways they could fix it, how she could change the technique) and tried to coax me into agreeing with the hairstyle at the end, not even checking it because she knew how bad the girl messed up.I asked for brown highlight as after the instructor seen that my hair was bleached she asked me if I was alright going blonde instead. I said that I would prefer to be brown like what I suggested initially, but then agreed to do a dark ash blonde because at the point my hair was bleached to, brown was nearly impossible. At the end of my 6 hour long session, the instructor tried convincing me how great it looked and if I was so happy forgetting the fact that I could hear all the mistakes they were trying to correct. I will post pictures if anyone is interested. Please just don’t waste your time.Lucky for them, my appointment was at 10 and I had a meeting at 4 (right around the time they finished my hair, yes 6 hours for a bleached hair style) so I just left. Even if I didn’t have a meeting, I would not want to stay to have the same people who ruined my hair attempt to fix the disaster they created. This was he worst hair experience I have ever had. If you’re going to be cheap and get a bang for you buck, remember hair correction is always more expensive than just having a true professional do your hair in the first place. My healthy long brown hair is now a bleach blonde mess that is going to cost me a fortune to fix.

Ive been coming to Paul Mitchell for several years now and I can honestly say that I am usually impressed. On average I would rate them at an 8 or 9 out of 10. I am a black girl with long relaxed hair and Ive probably had just about every student in the building do my hair at some point. Some of my favorites have already graduated...but thats life. I cant speak on their color jobs or cuts because I have not gotten those services. However, when I look over at other people getting those services they look pretty good from what I can see. Services Ive gotten are....shampoo, blow dry, flat iron, trim, deep condition, relaxers.Pros:1. Great prices. And they even do loyalty points.2. Super convenient3. Friendly receptionists. No hassle about changing your appointments.4. They do wicked blow drys and flat irons.5. Phase II will often have multiple people working on your hair; depending on the service you are getting. I love that because it gets me out of there quicker.6. Eager to please and correct any mistakes.Room for improvement:1. Styling. Not all students are good at styling even when you explain as best you can. But hey....they are students. Pictures help a lot, though.2. Speed. Sometimes it feels like its taking forever. Again, they are students. But I would recommend Phase II in a heartbeat. They are typically much faster.Recommendations:1. Give yourself plenty of time. Dont be in a rush.2. Dont get anything major like a big cut , color, or relaxer on your first visit. See how your stylist does with a simple shampoo and blowdry first. If not impressed, look around and see how other stylists are doing and request the stylist that you like.3. Be open minded. Some of my best experiences have come from people who didnt look like they would know how to do black hair. If youre concerned, stay in constant communication with them on every step of the process to make sure youre on the same page.

I would like to preface that I have been here three times for a cut/color and 3-4 additional times for a blowdry with phase 2 workers each time. After my very first time I would have given this place a 5, but of course, the girl I saw graduated and since then its just become worse and worse.Just as a starter, do clear your day. Phase 2 takes a very very long time, phase 1 is even longer. My cut and colors have never been less than 3.5-4 hours and have been as long as 5 hours. Keep in mind there is no parking and you have to keep feeding your meter. That doesnt add so much in to the negative rating as do other factors.Anyway, I come in with many pictures and specifics because I realize these are students, but most times I still get questions that I have no idea what the answer to them might be. When I ask for layers they ask if i want square or round or full or whatever else and its like Chinese to me...just layers! Same with color/highlights, they ask a lot of technical questions as if Id know the answers. Most recently my highlights looked like zebra stripes and while the manager tried to fix it it was not a permanent solution. The girl doing my hair seemed very annoyed/mad/angry that I voiced that my highlights were very choppy and unnatural. We had to wash again and after she did a quick blowdry with no style, no product no anything. This was especially annoying since I told her I was getting my hair done for valentines day which is also my anniversary and wanted it done nicely. What bothered me more than anything was when I asked for hair spray at the end and this girl (her name is Tiffany) just handed me the bottle. I paid for a cut & style and got no style. It just seems as if you have to be VERY specific and lay out every small detail along the way for these people. I dont know the technical term for the kind of layers I want, the swatch of the color Id like best, or if I want diagonal versus any other application of highlights...I think I am done going there. While the prices arent bad, not sure if the trade off is worth it for the 4-5 hours, the $10 to park, and the stress of the person doing your hair being uncertain (even though I do phase 2 and these people should be graduating within a few weeks).

My appointment was at 5:45, I was told if I were to get there by 6 I could be taken, I got there at 6:02 and I was refused to be taken, I didn’t even get to do a consultation once I got there. I also offered to not have my hair styled to save an extra amount of time and I stilll wasn’t taken. This situation was handled very unprofessiinally

Tommy, a young man with a neck tattoo, had a job interview to get to about 1/2 of the way into cutting my hair. Because the educator wouldn’t do the entire cut for him, he rushed through and declared his work ready to be checked with long strands, uneven cuts, and no trimming around the ears or neckline. Anyone getting a cut at PM School should expect to be patient, but in his haste this dude butchered my hair beyond recovery and left another poor student to apologize for his work. Worst haircut experience I’ve ever had, and it still cost me $15.
