We have been so pleased with our experience! We started when my daughter was 4.5 years old and I feel like it was perfect timing. They have her focusing on listening, respectful manners, calming their body to await instruction, formal Korean martial arts etiquette, along with what I imagine is standard martial arts physical fitness and coordination. While we could have chosen a more physically active and moving sport, I feel like this school will be a phenomenal foundation for her future no matter her choices in extra curricular activities.Sa Bum Nim Barbara, owner and instructor, is one of the most considerate, generous and caring people I’ve ever met. Your child will be well cared for while being held to the most highest of standards here!! The assistant instructors are also incredibly patient and talented at teaching the youngsters!Last, but not least, the school’s response to COVID-19 has been incredibly appropriate with limited students training at a distance in the school and training outside and at the park all while wearing masks.

Our seven-year-old daughter has been training at Kuk Sool Won of Oak Hill since she started in the Tiny Tigers program over two years ago. In short, it has been a wonderful experience! The school owners + staff are incredibly welcoming, kind, patient, encouraging and supportive. There is a solid sense of community/family at the school, from staff to students and families. The biggest impact we’ve seen to our daughter is a major boost in her confidence and courage; while it’s an excellent physical workout, the kids are also taught respect, control and responsibility. While we were sad to step away from in-person classes at the school during COVID-19, the owners did a remarkable job at pivoting to Zoom classes in the interim, and happily the kids are back to outdoor classes at the school (and park) again now. We feel safe sending our daughter as the school has taken great care to follow all precautions/guidelines. Kuk Sool Won has had such a positive impact on our daughter and we look forward to continuing to watch her progress.

My 5 year old joined Kuk Sool a few months ago and it has been a positive experience. This is her first extra curricular activity and she’s having a great time! I appreciate that they teach responsibility (she needs to bring her water bottle and sparring gear) and respect for others (acknowledging instructors as “yes ma’am or no sir”). My daughter enjoys the “games” they play to stretch and exercise and has fun during class! She’s learned self awareness and self regulation and importantly, how to use her voice and body to protect herself. In just the short time I’ve been a part of this group, I’ve noticed that Tim and Barbara are active in the community and hosts drives/events to help others out. Thank you Kuk Sool!

This review is for the womens self defense course my daughter attended on 7/25/21. She learned so much important information and techniques that she said were easy to absorb and retain. She loved how hands on and practical it was, as well as a great duration (1.5hrs) She said the instructors were terrific. Thank you for offering this to the community and making it affordable.Jennifer B

I cannot praise Kuk Sool Won of Oak Hill enough. I practiced at Oak Hill for two years and think back on that time fondly. The staff is professional and always went above and beyond in making everyone feel included. PKJN Tim, brings out the best in his students and teaches etiquette, mental and physical wellbeing . Makes me wish I lived in Austin again!

Kuk Sool Won of Oak Hill is the best! We found it a year ago on recommendation from other moms in South Austin. My 5 year old boys started mid January 2020 and the pandemic hit just 2 months later in March. The majority of our time at KSW has been online (with classes outside more recently). Ive been very impressed with the professionalism and dedication of the owners Tim and Barbara in how theyve set up the Zoom online experience for the small children. It is very hard to engage 3-6 year olds, but the staff has been very creative and organized from the start! My boys tested for their first belt stripe over Zoom in the summer and passed with flying colors. They have grown so much with Kuk Sool and earned more belt stripes since. Fast forward to the present, we decided to make it a family affair. My spouse and I joined Kuk Sool as well! Ive only been to a handful of adult classes so far, but Im thoroughly enjoying it. I look forward to a wonderful journey starting/continuing for our family

Our elementary-aged children have been practicing at Kuk Sool Won of Oak Hill for nearly two years and we are so thankful we joined this amazing family. They have grown in confidence, physical strength, stamina, coordination, etiquette and focus. The school owners are so supportive of Kuk Sool families and the local community. The school is run with excellence. It’s clean and they are great at communication. They are committed to creating community with social gatherings throughout the year. The school has won the world championship for the past two years— an indication of the quality of their instruction and the love they cultivate for this martial art.

My son has been attending Kuk Sool Won of Oak Hill for about six years, starting around age 7. The discipline of Kuk Sool Won is very detail-oriented, not just a punch-strike-cheer-go home generic martial art. The owners and all of the instructors are kind, patient, and encouraging, but they do have real expectations for these kids, and they dont hand out belts like candy. My son, who otherwise is not at all interested in athletics, has learned how to set a long-term goal and sweat to achieve it. He is now almost 14, and he will soon be eligible to test for a junior leadership role. I love being associated with an organization that can love kids and believe in them, while still expecting actual performance to earn rewards. There are some great role models here, both in the instructors and the older students. Its a fabulous place a young person to mature.

I have been training at Kuk Sool Won of Oak Hill Martial Arts for 7 years. I started because I wanted an activity where I could work on balance and flexibility to go along with a good workout. I have gotten so much more out of the experience. I love the practice. I have built strength especially in my legs, a wealth of self defense knowledge and the muscle memory to fall properly. I also love the people at Kuk Sool Won of Oak Hill Martial Arts. The community has become some of my closest supportive friends

My 6 year old has been attending Kuk Sool Won of Oak Hill for about 8 months and absolutely loves it. Ive noticed a huge boost in his confidence, which was the main reason we wanted him to join. The instructors are excellent with the Tiny Tigers program, dealing with all sorts of kids at different levels. Theyre kind, informative, fun, inclusive, and qualified. My son has learned so much through this program and is excited to go to class every week. I highly recommend giving the school a try if youre looking to build character, confidence, and want to have some fun!

This is the one and only negative review I have ever posted. My 5-year-old grandson, known by all as a shy, kind seeking-to-please soul, was summarily dismissed from continuing martial arts by Kuk Sool after three sessions. Ironic that the goal of increasing his self-esteem, strength, and connection between body, mind, and spirit are best accomplished by getting him as far away as possible from Kuk Sool!

We enrolled our 5 year old son at Kuk Sool Won thinking that martial arts would be a great way for him to increase his strength, confidence and focus. He is small for his age, and like many 5 year olds, takes some time to warm up to new environments. We signed up for a trial month period, but were never told that this was a try-out. The month trial was for 8 classes, and we were told after attending only 3 that he wasnt ready. Anyone that knows him will tell you he is the most gentle, sweet, eager to please kid, so I cant help but think the reason we were told he isnt ready is because he is small and less coordinated than his peers. I am thankful that we learned of this exclusionary environment before we signed up and made a financial commitment. If youre looking for a place that will increase your childs confidence, this is NOT it.

Kuk Sool Won of Oak Hill has been like a second home to our family. We have loved training together with our kids as they grew up. When our youngest child was 5, she started in the tiny tigers program, but was very shy and afraid to join in. We trusted her instructors and waited until she was ready. Six months later, she tried again and was ready to participate. Today, she is a young adult woman with a second degree black belt! I can’t say enough good things about the way this school opens its arms to children and adults of all abilities and turns them into champions!

The school is great! I took a Womens Self Defense class and not only were the instructors, well prepared, knowledgeable and encouraging but they also left us feeling powerful! I got to break a board in half at the end of the class and I am so stinking proud of it that I will probably keep it forever!!!

We signed up for the 30 day trial. The class is well organized. Thats a plus. However, from my perspective the owner is not interested in engaging her customers. Before introductions (which actually never happened) the owner verbally disciplined my son for picking up and throwing rocks because it was near her windows. I was ok with that. Probably a poor choice to place a landscape of rocks though right? It got weird when she got onto my 5 year old son AGAIN outside her business for jumping up and down while holding onto the metal bench next to the window. His feet were on the ground. At this point, she still has not introduced herself to me. Just been weird twice. Almost harassing a 5 year old acting like a five year old from my perspective. To go on about the weirdness, the second in charge led us (day 1) into an office full of stuff. I had my 2 year old also. Im juggling. They acted surprised and were super agitated when my son touched the flag on the desk. Didnt pick it up, just touched it. Talked to my son rudely in my opinion. I was still kinda taking it in but I had my doubts about a match at this point. On the positive, the children instructors they have were nice, punctual, professional and seemed to work with our son very well. He definitely enjoyed the classes. Told me so. We had a few practices prior to the owner telling us it was not a good fit for them and we should check back in 6 months. Surprising but maybe a blessing. I think this place probably is able to take only cream of the crop. Good for them. Im happy about the trial period. I had never heard of Kuk Sool Won. This placed seemed to have a lot going for it. The short experience was an eye opener. The owner never introduced herself which seems contrary to their formal respect dance and yet she was the one that gave the final no go to my wife. She said it was a team decision. After reading the other reviews, it seems to be a mixed bag. Nothing wrong with a trial period though. I say go for it if you are interested.

Our family has had such a great experience at Kuk Sool. The staff is amazing and the owners are really hands on, not only teaching but forming relationships with their students. We have two kids here, 9 and 7, and will continue here for many years as it really has been a great self discovery and confidence builder for both of them. Highly recommend!,

Excellent instruction, professional staff, friendly and helpful elders and teens with proven experience. This style of martial arts is different as it is a summary of over two thousand years of Korean martial arts using proven methods of building block approach, muscle memory, skill and speed. We are over 50 years when we started this year and plan on making this a lifelong commitment. Easy to come and try for week without risk. Great student mutual support community ... you and your entire family will be welcomed at whatever age and ability.

I love Kuk Sool Won (KSW) of Oak Hill and highly recommend it to anyone! My son began studying KSW at Oak Hill when he was 5 years old, he is now 7 and is a brown belt with a black stripe, which means that at some point this year he will begin working on his black belt. My son has a tremendous amount of energy and KSW has been great for him in developing discipline, balance, strength, and respect. What I love about the school at Oak Hill are many things including that it is traditional in nature; the owner, Tim King, as well as all of the instructors, have an incredible gift at working with the children and being aware and knowledgeable of the different ages and what they are capable of; and yet at the same time demanding from them the best that they can do always; I also love that it is like being a part of a family, and all that work there are very respectful towards and caring for not only the students but all of the family members as well. My son truly enjoys going because it is a place he has formed good friendships, he has fun, and he knows that he is loved and cared about - it is a good place. Thank you KSW of Oak Hill for all that you do!!!
