I was a student of this school for a long time because of its focus on martial arts. However, as time went on there was more of a focus on the financial and fitting in socially as the school became more clique - ish as if it was a social club as opposed to a martial arts school with a focus on martial arts. If you come to study martial arts your focus should be on that, not whether or not we can have a nice chat before or after class

A professional, friendly training environment situated in downtown Manhattan. I was made to feel like one of the team from the moment I stepped through the door. Cru Shawn was super patient and his skillful yet humorous attitude made the training fun, yet a truly great technical workout. Just what I was looking for. I look forward to stepping onto the mat again.Andersons Martial Academy is the real deal.

I live this school! Great vibes and great people. Their new location is beautiful and kept in very good cleanliness. Very difficult to find a school that teaches all these martial arts at a high level under one roof. All the instructors are very approachable and nice people. I highly recommend this school to anyone looking to broaden their knowledge of martial arts.

The 5 star rating can be spelled out in 4 letters, COLO. Her vast knowledge in multiple martial arts combined with her extensive training and experience, makes Colo one of the premier martial arts instructors in the area. Her personality gives her the innate ability to connect with her students/clients and demonstrate the principals of martial arts in organized and functional fashion. Colo displays passion and an unmatched desire when dealing with her students and clients. So whether you are trying to get into the BEST shape of your life, or you are interested in training at one the best Martial Arts schools in the area, go to Anderson’s and BOLO (Be On the Look Out) for COLO. I hear she is a pretty good guitar player too.

I looked for the perfect martial arts school for years before finding Andersons. I knew I wanted to train hard and take a serious approach to martial arts, but I still wanted to enjoy myself and have a good time. It wasnt an easy balance to find – until I came across Andersons. So many training schools in this city are focused on being trendy instead of building real skills and fostering respect for the art, the school, and the community. Andersons went above and beyond anything I could have expected. I felt like I belonged, even as a newbie with absolutely no experience, and was encouraged from day one to challenge myself and do my best. Thats priceless.

I began taking Muay Thai classes at Andersons January 2016 and continued all the way until January 2019 when I moved away from NYC. During those 3 years I continued practicing at Andersons because they made me feel welcomed and as if I was part of a family. They pushed me to the edge of my limits every night and helped me to progress over time. Not only was the physical training something that was great for me but also on most nights Sifu Dan was on hand to give us words of encouragement in throughout the classes and these were words that helped to push me forward even outside of the gym.In July 2019 I returned for a class while visiting NYC and I was welcomed with open arms which I truly appreciated. Anytime I am back in NYC I will make it a point to visit Andersons and if you are lucky enough to live in NYC I totally recommend practicing at Andersons. The teachers are great, the prices are extremely reasonable and the quality of the teaching is top notch.

Ive been coming here for about 5 years. Its definitely one of the best places to learn martial arts as it has something for everyone. I first started taking the kettlebell kickboxing classes and eventually started learning martial arts. They offer all types of arts and some great instruction. Everyone who teaches are either fighters or have spent many years training so you can trust that youre learning correct technique and form. Beyond that, the group of people you train with and eventually become friends with are really the best. Whether youre looking to train for interest, self defense or to get a workout in, youll be able to find what you need here. Staff is the best and the gym is clean. Do bring wipes though because there are no showers!

Andersons is a fantastic school. All of the instructors are very friendly and helpful. Sifu Anderson teaches quite a bit, himself. And all of the fellow students get along great, create a nurturing environment, and are always looking to make each other better. Theres a lot of focus on practical skills, which I particularly like. Finally, he is a good all around guy who I consider a friend. With respect to the school itself, you would be hard pressed to find a broader or more well-rounded curriculum. Andersons Martial Arts Academy is awesome. I trained with them in 2009 and 2010 while I was in grad school and could take advantage of all their classes. Coming back six years later on a business trip, the same instructors were there running classes. I love the knife class, boxing, and muay thai. They are great workouts that can be intense as you want them to be. Although just in for a week, I could tell that the friendly, encouraging training environment that I remembered from my previous time training with them still exists. While having great instructors is important at a school, having students with the right intent is just as important. Andersons attracts and cultivates the students who make a school great. You can take your training as far as you want - whether its self defense, personal fitness, or getting ready to fight in the ring. Thanks again for the awesome training environment!

Been a part of the AMAA family for 10 years now and I can confidently say this place right here IS the most well rounded training studio in NYC. From fitness, competition to self defense, Andersons Martial Arts Academy is where its at. Unlike most studios nowadays, solely focusing on the sport, AMAA focuses on what can happen in the real world and I strongly believe its important to train in both. They forge elite fighters and amazing practitioners of the Arts. That being said heres my advice for success, just like anything else, start of with the fundamentals and build up from there. Having that foundation is very important in training Martial Arts and helps from being too overwhelmed especially if youre brand new to training. Most importantly have fun and dont be shy, literally everyone there, including the other students are down to earth and willing to help.

Andersons was my first taste of martial arts since I was a child, and when I started I was pretty nervous, shy, and lacking in confidence (both on the mat and off). AMAA helped with all of that. AMAA is a one of the best martial arts school in NYC, if not the entire nation. I have been a student of AMAA and Sifu Anderson for over 10 years (on and off). I had to take time off here and there throughout those 10 years due to random injuries and circumstances. Nevertheless, whenever I deliberate on what school to continue training at upon my return, I always choose AMAA. There is no other martial arts school in NYC that gives you access to high level education and training over several different martial arts categories. These include: Muay Thai, BJJ, and Jeet Kune Do. In my humble opinion, they are one of the best to do what they do.

Anderson’s MMA is one of the most comprehensive academies you could find. Had studied more traditional martial arts in the past which were great. But wanted something more functional and was searching for jeet kune do schools. After a lot of research haven’t found anything else like Anderson’s: JKD, Muay Thai, BJJ, Boxing, Filipino kali stick & knife, special seminars throughout the year in savate, silat, international masters like Clark Gracie, Guro Dan Inosanto himself. The amount of knowledge at your disposal is mind-blowing, and the curriculum helps keep you on pace for progress. Sifu Anderson has dedicated his life to martial arts for well over 30 years, has an astounding breadth of knowledge and experience, and is an inspiring teacher. Many of the instructors there are actively training for competition, and you just can’t beat that level of focus, dedication, and commitment to functional fighting.Early morning, afternoon and evening classes throughout the week are super convenient. School is really clean, locker rooms are cleaned multiple times during the day. Quality strength training equipment at the front open to all students. Really is a family identity and feel to the school… Sifu & Simu, the instructors and students are all really welcoming and you can make some great friends and training partners. Been recommending the 3-day free trial to all my friends. Wonderful school and training.

Sifu and Simo Anderson lead with loyalty and kindness and really care about everyone who walks in the door. Training here has completely changed my life and given me confidence and competence in my abilities and amazing friends. In addition, the Kettlebell Kickboxing program offered has elevated my fitness and mobility so I can train more often. I also take private lessons in Muay Thai and have had incredible progress. I trained at AMAA for 2-3 years after graduating from college and trying to figure out what to do with my life. I was shy, lacking self confidence, a worrier, often anxious, and lacking a direction/purpose in life. While AMAA was not the magical cure to all those issues, I would say it was definitely the catalyst that gave me the boost I needed to embark on an amazing journey of self growth and change. I would say that this place was integral in building the self realization and confidence to embark on a career in the armed forces which I always dreamed of doing, but always doubted I was capable of. What I found at AMAA was a place where people of all colors and backgrounds come together to better themselves and support each other. On top of great training in all varieties of martial arts (stand up, ground, weapons, sport fighting, street fighting, etc) you will also find a great team, supportive atmosphere, and friends.I have accomplished things in the military that I never thought I was capable of. I dont think I ever would have done any of this if not for the confidence I gained while training at AMAA and the realization that I am a strong person with a potential I still have not reached. So I simply want to say thank you for the place you created and doing what you do.

This school has good teachers, a well-thought-out curriculum, and admirable students. The teachers created the curriculum and students, so I will start with them.Sifu Anderson is very knowledgeable indeed, still young enough that he can demonstrate techniques dynamically, and capable of inspiring whole classes to want to work hard. He explains techniques and devises drills well. He talks to us about how good martial artists control their powers carefully and take care of new students coming up. The talks work. His students really do act like that.Among the rest of teaching staff, Phil and Dasha stand out. Phil can pace a class so that you are both trembling with exhaustion and substantially smarter by the end of it. Dasha has a masters in exercise science and runs the exercise program. Because she practices too, she knows just how to put together exercise programs that work body parts that the martial arts classes miss. The curriculum is boxing with light sparring, kickboxing with light sparring, stick with padded stick sparring, knife with foam knife sparring, and bjj with rolling. We spar often but not hard, so that you get to work spontaneously against resistance but dont get more beaten out of your head than in. I have trained in a number of other styles, and this curriculum is more complete and wastes less of your time than most. They know just what they want you to know, and they teach it systematically. Finally, through some combination of training and good luck, the students are all likable, decent people. Most fighting schools have one or two bullies, kept more or less under control, but still dangerous. This school doesnt seem to have any. Partly it is Sifus lectures. Partly it is that the senior students are so good that everyone tries to copy them, and good to people who cant fight as well, which gets copied too. Partly, I think, it is just luck. This school is having a kind of golden age. Get in there now, while it lasts.

There have been lots of so called martial art places popping up in NYC, perhaps because of the popularity of mixed martial arts and also alternative fitness. However in a city as vast as new York, with the top resources available to all of us I would highly advise anyone looking to learn the art of self defense, the mastery or real weapons, grappling and striking to be highly selective. AMAA as they call themselves has been teaching for over two decades. Still they are young, highly energized, caring and effective. Not only do they continue to develop champions in all areas of martial sport (MMA, Muay thai, Brazilian Jiujitsu and Boxing) but they also service a great deal of regular individuals in the art of Bruce Lees Jeet Kune Do and Filipino Kali (weapons like knife and stick). The atmosphere is loving, hard working and most of all fun. They are serious about their craft and passionate about their instruction. They offer a FREE one-on-one private lesson to anyone looking to train, and also a FREE day at AMAA option. Be selective, DO NOT just go to a McDojo - go to an Academy and you will be that much greater for it! (and yes, they have good gym equipment for your use too- win, win).
